I stopped into The Red Hook and got a Chai and a Toffee Sticky Roll/Bun. my life has changed! The toffee deliciousness was moist and ooey gooey..and the Chai, hot, spicy, and bold! Stopped in this morning, I was hoping to find a nice place to study while on break in between jobs and I'm so glad I did! Super friendly staff who took my order and whipped up my cappuccino quickly. The baked goods in the display case looked amazing but I was determined to focus on studying. Long story short their cappuccino was perfect, I studied for 2.5 hours in a front window nook and then ordered a cup of tea and 3 shortbread cookies. The cookies were amazing, I had chocolate chip, a pecan and the third flavor I can't remember but they were perfectly buttery and delicious! This place has such character! Cute and simple decor with lots of plants. Friendly employees. Great coffee/tea and a HUGE pastry selection. There are many vegan options, but unfortunately, the only gluten free option I saw were the macarons. I didn't try these on my visit, but next time I definitely will. The music and chatter does get a bit loud, so it's not ideal if you want peace and quiet to work/study. There's about eight small tables and a little countertop that can seat two people. I went on a Sunday morning/afternoon, and it was very busy. There was a constant line at the register, and all the tables were full. If you go in the winter, make sure you don't sit by the door! Or dress very warmly. They don't have a double door entryway, so whenever people enter/exit (which was basically every minute since it was very busy), you get blasted with cold air. This was previously a five star review. The baked goods here are still amazing, that has not changed. But I want to address the too-cool-for-school staff. The first time my wife and I came in, we were helped by a delightful person who we have not seen since. Since then every time we come in and start picking things out it just seems like we're inconveniencing the folks behind the counter. They're not very helpful and the opposite of enthusiastic about the products. Which blows my mind because of how good they are. Maybe the treats are so good they sell themselves? Anyway, replace the hipsters please. Or at least hire more enthusiastic hipsters. read more

My wife and I wanted a down to earth, amazing coffee, delicious food cafe to find and we have found it. We both ordered a cappuccino (for here), in the ceramic cups. They came with a fun design. Awesome. We love you, too! $3.70 price tag is just right. The drinks were crafted perfectly and we're delicious!! The espresso tastes fine and divine & the froth was perfect. We also ordered a cinnamon roll huge delicious pastry thing: holy hell. Delicious. Had some amazing not-to-sweet frosting and was huge for the $4 price tag. And homemade, I assume. ($3 for a Starbucks bun which comes wrapped in plastic and cardboard from corporate, you choose). Our service was fantastic. I wish I got our woman's name, she was tall with black hair and SO friendly. There was plenty of seating for us for a small place. Not that many seats, but just enough for 9am Joe. I recently discovered this spot thru a friend cause I was telling her how I craved Stumptown and I am in Michigan and that's hard to find a place that uses Stumptown beans then she told me about The Red Hook and of course I am a die hard coffee fan so I went and checked it out this weekend. It smelled like home. I loved it so so much. The atmosphere was calm and nice, they have a good selections of beans and also pastries to eat as well. The baristas are all very nice. I got a Cappuccino and this place delivered. It was consistently smooth and the ratio between the coffee and the milk is spotted on. And no bitter note at the end. I ride for The Red Hook. I don't care if there's only a few tables. I don't care that the place is usually mad crowded. Their coffee (Stumptown, straight outta the Pacific Northwest) is the best option in Oakland County, and their baristas know EXACTLY how to use this liquid gold. The place is crowded because the coffee is good. The drinks are $3/4 a piece because they are worth it. If you had a bad experience at The Red Hook it was because you wanted it to be something it isn't. Easy example: The Red Hook is a cafe, not your home office. I don't usually go there to do computer work, and because of that, I am never disappointed. However, I do go for delicious coffee, and am, still, never disappointed. Serious coffee fans. Went to the Red Hook in Ferndale for the first time and was very pleased. The space has a really nice and cozy vibe. Its a little on the small end so be prepared to have a back up if you are looking to stay a while. If you can score a table its a great place to sit and read, get some work done, or chat with a friend. Menu is small but everything on it looks delicious. There was only one person ahead of me and he got his espresso drink pretty quickly. Then, someone's friend strolled in. She obviously knew the staff so they made her two espresso drinks ahead of mine and gabbed for a bit. All would have been well if the latte was amazing. But it wasn't. Went into the Red Hook today and had a great experience. I am a loyal Pin Wheel customer and was glad to have Ann's beautiful pastries back in my mouth after a short remodel. The Red Hook girls were friendly and helpful and made me a fantastic cup of coffee. I also had one of Ann's amazing sandwiches and my son a lovely cup of hot cocoa. Glad you are here Red Hook and so glad Pin Wheel is still a part of Ferndale's downtown. As for the above post, I think she should stay in Birmingham where they can spin a pretty design on the top of her coffee and charge her an extra $1.50. In short - Best ,consistent, cup of coffee that I have had in a long long time. Long review - It is rare to find an exceptional cup of coffee. And unfortunately when you do on second or third visit the coffee can be mediocre to bad. To put it bluntly it is really easy to make a average cup of coffee. It is difficult to keep the employee(s) consistent and of course the beans and how they are prepared make a big difference also. This is my second visit. First time I had a standard cup of java. Wow. I can taste the complexity of the beans. It was not to strong or to weak. Second visit was a cappuccino. Again good selection of beans but more importantly how the milk was prepared was, surprisingly, exceptional. Not burnt, just fluffy enough to actually be able to taste everything in the right combination. Typically the milk is either burned, to frothy (so you are not getting the liquid at the right moment) or flat. I was there both times in the early AM. So too early for food for me. But I always like Pinwheel for their sweets. And I am curious about the sandwich selections. Easy to get to and surrounded by everything. Good price. Nice atmosphere (not loud or cramped). I do like the rustic and artistic style of the furniture and decor. There is a kids section which seems nice. I don't have any so......yeah. The heavenly smell of coffee greets you at the door. They have many options for your caffeine fix but oh the baked goods! I was looking for something free of dairy and there were so many options: cookies, breads, brownies, cookie bars, etc. I noticed as I walked in from the back an assortment of kids' toys to keep your little one occupied while you enjoy yourself. I bought a couple of muffins today and I handed them my AM EX gift card, the chick quickly says to me "We don't take American Express..sorry!" She looked at me like she wanted me to walk away. The Red Hook is the BEST place to treat yourself and to start the weekend! So happy I stopped in this morning. I haven't even finished my latte and breakfast biscuit sandwich but just had to write a quick review. The latte is creamy, sweet and almost umami-like.... sooooo good! It was so beautiful too I hated to mess it up by taking the first sip. :) The breakfast sandwich is just incredible and big enough to share, well worth the price. It doesn't look big but it is and it's densely packed with top quality egg, white cheddar and thick meaty bacon. The biscuit itself is so flakey, buttery and tasty. Yum! I picked up a few beautiful little macarons for later. We've tried them in the past and I'm positive they won't disappoint. The women behind the counter were so kind and polite. I'm definitely stopping into The Red Hook way more frequently! Just an all around pleasant place! Love it. read more

The baked goods? Yum. The coffee? So good. I am a huge fan of the tea cakes (every kind!), and the iced coffee (if you close your eyes and take a sip, it's like liquid dark chocolate), and the atmosphere is wonderful. Most of the staff here is very reasonable, attentive, and friendly. I come in a few times a week, and they always remember me, often even remembering what I usually like to order. This type of friendly, personalized service is exactly the type of thing that makes people keep coming back for more. I have one complaint. I know that they have specialized coffee, and very knowledgeable baristas. This is great. Here's what I don't like; when somebody asks a question about your coffee, don't being a condescending know it all, try making your products more approachable for your guests instead of making them feel stupid for being curious about the products that you offer. My roommate and I went in for coffee a few weeks ago, and when she asked a simple question about the difference between two brewing techniques, she was met with snobby attitude from the sandy haired hipster dude behind the counter. It's great that you know your stuff man, but why not try sharing your knowledge in a friendly and enthusiastic way next time? I would never let one weird experience ruin my opinion of this business.
