This was my second time at the Phoenix. The food is absolutely delicious; today I had the portobello burger and a house salad. The reason for three stars is due to Brandee's service. A work colleague and I stopped in for lunch today and were greeted by Brandee at the hostess stand. When she looked up at me, she raised her eyebrows and widened her eyes and then looked at the ground. I was wearing slacks, some low heels, and a tank top due to the weather being beautiful. I do have a large tattoo on my chest that is colorful and tasteful and is of high quality. Her peculiar glare was noticed by both my work colleague and me. This treatment continued through the meal, in which we were served by Brandee, and despite me and my work colleague being extremely polite, she made me feel with her looks as well as her shortness that she was judging me. It is frustrating on many levels, particularly due to the fact that I am a Masters level professional in my field. I treated her nicely, but because she apparently assumed that I was a low quality individual due to having some tattoos, she didn't treat either of us well. Indeed, she wouldn't make eye contact, and she acted rushed each time she was speaking to us. Additionally, when I ordered a salad with my burger and she asked what dressing, I asked her what kind they had. She loudly sighed and said, "UGH, blue cheese, ranch, honey mustard..." before flipping over the menu and pointing out all the selections to me. Overall, she acted like she didn't want to be serving us. I am typically a very generous tipper, but only left her 15% due to being treated poorly. Real quick---we've come back here a few times in 2011 with friends. As I said in my previous review, didn't think WE would be back. But it was a group decision. As it turns out, we've come to enjoy the place. Maybe it's because we are with our friends and we're all having a good time....a little wine.....a little more wine....or maybe it's because we finally found an entree that is downright tasty. The buy one entree, get one half off coupon is also a plus. That being said, we've come to savor the chicken marsala. Combined with a cup of their French onion soup beforehand....mmmmm good. Wow. This place has collapsed in terms of quality! I just had TWO margarita glasses in a row with LIPSTICK on them !!!! Not to mention that after the first one, she SHOULD have made a fresh one, but instead poured it into another lipstick smeared glass. Hideous. So pissed! Bartender is half asleep. No manager on duty to complain to. DO NOT come here. We had lunch- halibut tacos were limp and cold, bartender had zero personality and acted like it was too much work to do anything. Salsa was fine, but chips had a freezer burned flavor. And there is a brown chunk of something in our chips! See the photo. Wish I had photographed the glasses. So very nasty. I will now be warning all of those very same people, wealthy folks who are new to town and are looking for a place to spend money, to stay away or risk unhealthy chunks in your food, and someone else's germs on your glass. There is no food quality here. Period. And they don't care. Go somewhere you won't get sick. My guess is they are on their way out anyway, as these sorts of disgusting transgressions often occur when employees are unhappy and the place is on a slide towards vacancy. This was a great find. Service was prompt and friendly and the food was delicious. The Ahi sliders were magic and the wasabi aioli was delicious. I loved the calamari. The sauces were an odd choice but the calamari itself was cooked perfectly. The sweet potato fries were excellent. Again, odd sauce choices but I loved the crispness. The fact that they had Goodlife Sweet As on tap was an absolute treat. It's my favorite! We will definitely be back to try other dishes. read more

The only reason I'm giving two stars is because my mom is a waitress, and i know how crazy the food industry can be when it comes to running a busy place like this. The staff here works hard and somehow keeps up with the crazy pace. On to why I dislike this place...the food has never impressed me very much. Burgers have potential, good size, good grind...but twice, they drowned it in worcestershire sauce to the point where I could not eat it. Drinks have been hit or miss every time I've visited, they're either awesome or awful. Pizza comes with tons of excess grease and just isn't very good IMHO. I am thoroughly confused as to how and why this place stays so busy, should I try it again despite never having a great experience?? One more thing, the bartender who i will not name, laughed at my burger preferences when i ordered a bacon cheeseburger plain and dry, actually saying to me: "so you want it with no flavor?" I didn't laugh...you see, before there were McDonald's restaurants around, everyone had good quality beef. McDonald's actually started the common practice of adding condiments to a burger. They used Ketchup, mustard, lettuce tomato ect... to cover up the less desirable flavor of their inferior, cheaper beef, containing fillers-- which is why i always try a burger plain and dry, cooked medium rare, if ordering one from a new place. It is the best way to judge for quality (if its good plain and dry, it will be great the way i like it-- not all condiments are burger poison). We had some hummus and my bf had a reuben with some tasty fries that I had to try. The service was great as there were not many people in the bar. I have never been treated so rudely by a server. The patrons are just as rude and crass as the servers. I have supported The Phoenix since it first opened in 2009 and began to occupy the building on Bellevue Drive. My fiance and I were asked to leave by a very rude and accusing server because another customer was given the same booth as us, she (the customer) reported to the host that we told her to f..k off, which we DID NOT, she lied. A man in the bar started ranting at us, stupid drunk. I will never go back to this low-life establishment again. There are so many other restaurants in Bend to support that appreciate their customers and run their establishments on a more professional basis. read more

I LOVE the Phoenix! My favorite is the salmon piccata! They can even make it gluten free! Their small salads are huge and delicious! Seating is mostly booths and super cozy. First visit to The Phoenix while in town for a day, met for dinner during happy hour. The happy hour menu had many good choices of apps and tacos, sliders, etc. Looked great! On the main menu, I chose the meatloaf and opted for extra green veggies instead of the whipped potatoes to keep the carbs low. Served as 2 slices of inch-thick (about) bacon-wrapped meatloaf, cooked nicely, with a crimini mushroom gravy. The meatloaf was very good, and was served hot. Lots of flavor. Tender, flavorful and satisfying. The veggies were steamed and still had firmness and color. Not overcooked. Nicely seasoned. For $16, I didn't leave hungry. Service was friendly and prompt. Never had to look around for our server. She made us feel welcomed and special. Hope to visit again next time I'm in town. read more

This was a great find. We've been in Bend for about 8 months now but always go downtown and to the west side when we go out for dinner. My wife wanted to try somewhere new for her birthday and decided to check it out here. We were not disappointed! It's a bit hidden and off the beaten path, but it's worth checking out. Food was really good, big portions too! Small garden salad was the size of a regular-to-large at most other places. Nice menu with a good variety to choose from. Steaks and ribs looked good, but we both were craving a burger. Really good burger, they do a ground chuck mixed with brisket. My burger was supposed to be medium well and came out medium at best. It was still good, I'll probably order well done next time and see how it turns out. I'm not a huge fan of thin shoestring fries but they were cooked and seasoned to perfection...I just had to bunch a few more together each time. I added extra crispy bacon and it actually came out pretty crispy. Most places fail hard in this area, but The Phoenix did great. The pickles on the burger were divine! Service was outstanding, very warm and friendly. Our server brought out a ice cream brownie for my wife's birthday and spared her the embarrassing birthday song which she loved and was extremely grateful for. We got a couple of brick oven pizzas for lunch and were very happy with the crust and flavors - service was good, server was friendly and attentive without hovering. The Phoenix likes to call itself the restaurant for everyone. NO, IT IS NOT! i discovered this last night when we attempted to dine there with out of town guests who brought their dog wit them. Bend is a huge dog town. People here like to bring their dogs with them when they go out to eat. Especially in the summer. Since The Phoenix has more than one outdoors eating area, you would think one of them could be for dogs. I have always recommended The Phoenix to people but will no longer do so. I will also no longer be dining there. Nor will my family and friends as we all have dogs and want to bring them with us weather permitting. We do not patronize dog UNfriendly buisinesses. My wife and I dined at The Phoenix tonight. The decor is kinda cliche but the food and service made us forget the surroundings. We both ordered flatiron steak. The meat was very tender and flavorful. The steak was served with a small container of chimichurri sauce. The main flavor was garlic but much more complex. A very good accompaniment. Even the broccoli was cooked to perfection. A go to spot for lunch or dinner. High quality American food, comfort food, and healthy options like giant salads. I had the Phoenix salad with steak, both delicious, and my husband had a steak with mashed potatoes and vegetables and was very happy. The kids' menu was pretty extensive compared to other places and had multiple pasta sauce options, ribs, and meatloaf, in addition to the usual kiddie fare like grilled cheese and chicken fingers. But the star of the whole meal was the crab cake appetizer--two generously sized cakes over fresh spinach dressed with light tangy honey mustard dressing and garnished with fried onions (I could have left those off and been happy, but the kids ate them). A chipotle purée of some sort was under the cakes and was a nice addition. Many beers on tap, and we chose the local cider which they have rotating on one tap. The service was excellent and we found Loretta to be very pleasant and attentive. When something wasn't quite right with my salad, she took care of it right away. We've stayed next to this popular restaurant several times (for early-morning medical appointments at St. Charles) and - as we're traveling with our pup - have relied on take-out orders. Not only has the food been excellent, but the gracious & efficient service deserve high praise. We once tried to place an order on Super Bowl Sunday. This is a pretty good place. I wouldn't put it in any of my top spots, but they have consistently put out decent food, with good fresh ingredients. However, their portion sizes tend to fluctuate rather wildly, which means it can be kind of a crapshoot as to how satisfying your meal will be. They also seem to have problems at times with temperature, I've been served food that was a little on the lukewarm side. I definitely recommend trying their Caesar salad, one of the only places in town that actually makes their dressing (or at least they used to be, my last visit the recipe seemed different somehow). Get it with the seared Ahi and make it a meal. They do a competent steak that is actually grilled to your specifications instead of consistently overcooking it like most places in the area. Their meatloaf is also fantastic. I seldom regret eating here, but it doesn't exactly excite me either. A good, competent eatery, and there are far worse places to spend you evening. read more
