Blackened NY steak
Robin S.

The Phoenix was recommended as a good place for a steak that won't hurt your wallet (much). And it offers quite a lot of options for those who don't eat meat. We had a table for three reserved for 6 on a weeknight and while we were seated almost immediately, the restaurant was quite busy. - Blackened NY steak: Nicely blackened, not 'melt in your mouth' but very good. It's not a huge cut. Maybe Blacksmith, Brickhouse, Bos Taurus or Kayo's might offer a marginally better steak but they also charge more. - Salmon piccata: excellent rendition of salmon. - 'Chefs' vegetable side: a bit disappointing, actually. Green beans needed a little further cooking and the carrots & broccoli were bland. Needs seasoning and maybe another choice of vegetables. I think the chef phoned this one in. - Baked potato: perfectly cooked. Love the all-booth seating in the dining room. A bit loud in the restaurant. Music is unnecessary. Great service. Tap list is pretty extensive for a restaurant. I like that they have details on each beer on the back of the menu. Speaking of, why do restaurants only give a table of three one drink menu? Never understood that. I'll try to peel myself away from the brewpubs in town and visit occasionally.

Chicken Piccata - 10 out of 10
Chris C.

A group of four of us came on a Saturday and sat I. The bar. We ordered the Buffalo Wings, Taco Salad and the Chicken Piccata. Everything was delicious and the service was great. Each of us ordered a Long Island and although they weren't super tasty, they were strong and worth the purchase. We had eaten all over Bend and this was the best food experience this far. Good job Phoenix!!

My keto burger. $21 with tip.

Good food and good service. We were able to walk right in for a table. Next time we're in Bend we will be going back.

I like the happy hour. But don't order the shrimp skewers. They really need to take it off the Happy Hour menu. Burnt and cold.

But this place in Bend... this is serious burger territory. First thing you notice: they're not messing around with the menu. Just burgers that understand what a burger is supposed to be. Double patty. Brioche bun. Cheese doing its job. America. I ordered The O.G. because I respect tradition. American cheese, caramelized onions, burger sauce. Simple system. Works great. Like a pickup truck that starts every time. My buddy got The Popper which is basically what happens when a jalapeño popper and a burger start collaborating. Bacon, jalapeño cream cheese, ranch. It looked like something a scientist made to test the limits of happiness. Fries were solid. Soda cold. No weird nonsense. Just burgers doing burger things. Only reason it's 4 stars instead of 5 is because if I lived closer I would probably eat here too often and that feels medically irresponsible. I'd give it 6 stars if Yelp understood burgers better.

Between the exceptionally good food at Hook and Plow, a most pleasant hotel experience, and a memorable trip to the High Desert Museum; our trip to Bend turned out to be a pleasure instead of the miserableness I expected. We had the Steak Tartare, the Chef's Board, the Blackend Crabcake, the Pear and Burrata Salad, and the Bone-in Pork Chop. We each got the cheesecake for desert and split the other dishes. This was more than enough for the three of us and we left full, happy, and with three large to-go boxes. The flavors of the various dishes were amazing. While all the dishes were vvery good, the standouts to me were the steak Tartare, the Pear and Burrata Salad, and the Cheesecake.

We were greeted by the host and seated quickly. We started our meal with a delicious non-alcoholic drink and the Chef's Board: a charcuterie with an assortment of cured meats, rustic bread, and various spreads. That came out pretty quickly. Unfortunately, our main courses came out much, much later and lukewarm. Luckily, the food was good enough that it made up for the temperature. I had the NY strip steak. The steak and the Boursin mashed potatoes alone were very good. The pickled onions and chimichurri complemented the meat very well. The meal was supposed to include brussel sprouts but came with a grilled broccoli cauliflower assortment instead. My wife had the Scallop Risotto which was also a great recommendation from the server. In reality, The Hook & Plow deserved 3 1/2 stars but that's not an option on Yelp. It may have been an off night for the staff, so I will give them the benefit of doubt. We would be open to trying it again sometime in the future.

When the busser came to clear the plates, she asked how everything was. I said good except the Mac was not great (and was basically untouched). Her disdainful reply, looking at it, was "well, that's a lot of pepper." The pepper wasn't the problem, and being snide to a customer who hadn't complained or asked for anything despite my disappointment in the dish was unnecessary and rude. On the plus side, the beer was good and what I expect from Deschutes. Given that there are a bunch of brewery restaurants within a few blocks, I would have expected more flavorful food and absolutely a better experience with the staff.

Bad news. Good news…read more Bad news first is this: The Drake has been sold to new owners and TONIGHT, APRIL 12, WILL BE THE LAST DAY OF SERVICE at The Drake with the original owner and the current menu. So if you're hankering for the mac n cheese or shrimp n grits or veg burger or any of the menu items, after today they are history. I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place. In the meantime, I remember how fun and delicious it could be to eat at The Drake.

I now realize I've been driving the extra distance for subpar food for the last two years when I could have been enjoying Sunriver all this time. Dad didn't feel like cooking while mom was away so we gave Sunriver a shot. We were promptly seated when we got there. The wait staff worked as a team to get us drinks and our food order in. We ordered a meat lovers pizza with the hot honey drizzle and got to watch them prepare it and toss it in their fire oven. The crust was airy and delicious. If I'm being honest, it reminds me of how Pizza Hut used to taste in the 90s and I mean that as a huge compliment. Unfortunately, I got the wings for myself so I had to patiently wait for my kids to say they were too full before I snatched a slice.
