Good food and good service. We were able to walk right in for a table. Next time we're in Bend we will be going back.

Husband and I came over to The Phoenix after the USPSA Match this past weekend. We were starving, the food smells good from the outside and we we're staying at a hotel right next to the restaurant. We ordered the French Onion Soup: too salty Crab cakes:Crab cakes itself was OK, the sauce was too sour , Baby BBQ Ribs: was great , and Angel hair pomodoro: The sauce was way too sour, and it tasted weird. Our waitress looked at us really weird, and right in my face, like she's never seen a diverse person in her area before. She didn't' attend to us as much as she attended to her other tables. So we felt really outta place. Over all the only person that was friendly was the hostess that brought us to our table, other than that the food wasn't good at all. read more

The night started out a bit slow. The host took awhile to greet us because he was having great time with some other customers. Once seated we were now greeted by Chris. He made up for the host. Super nice guy and attentive. Not even done with my last sip of lemonade when he was there with my next glass. The food was great. I had the portobello mushroom burger which was juicy and right on. A two hander for sure due to its juiciness. The fries were great. Well seasoned not too salty. I wish it came with more ketchup on the side. She had the chicken Alfredo pasta plate. Noodles were creamy and the chicken was smokey. Some charred edges but it did not detract from the overall taste. No dessert this time but we will be back. As we were getting ready to finish, Chris came and boxed our leftover food with labels and all, he went above the norm for waiters, nice plus. He was our checkout person and was fast doing so. The environment was divided. Half bar and TV section with a lot of different college games on and somewhat loud. We sat in the regular dining section which was not loud but not quiet. No TVs in this area except for a view of the kitchen which has all open glass walls. Overall, definitely will be back. read more

The tacos were surprisingly some of the best I've ever had next to a nationally recognized taco joint in vegas. They aren't street, but they'll do. The menu has lots of variety for whatever you're interested in. Dining hours are nice for Late night folks. The happy hour menu has a lot to offer. So, went back. Really wanted to try the roasted beet and kale salad. I was concerned when I ordered and was warned that the salad was "smaller in winter". Um. Beets and kale are prime winter veggies! Ordered it anyway due to my irrational love of beets. Waiter offered that to make it bigger I could add a protein. ("we cheat you on ingredients, charge the same as normal, and now think you should be up-charged to make it worth it"). Salad arrived, small as stated, with burned hazelnuts and one noticeable piece of bacon. The worst part is that I'm upset but the ingredients were pretty darn tasty... except for bits of nut char, but I could've forgiven that since its tricky to do right. Maybe I won't be talked into it again. ;) p.s. Nice service again. Well, except for someone at our table offering a compliment to an expediter and her loud reply of "well, you'd think some people actually do this for a living!!". After driving for hours, beat and tired, we went to our motel and the front desk guy suggested a number of places. NO, I don't want to drive any more and NO we didn't want to go to a pub, so we took a casual stroll over to the Phoenix. Expecitng a themed chain restaurant, it is quite a few steps above a Denny's but not the House of Prime Rib (in San Francisco) either. Well, we weren't disappointed and I have to say, the food was quite good and reasonable. FOOD: There were four of us all just hitting the main dinner items. I had the Chicken Piccata: grilled and moist (I can tell the chicken was fresh), the light sauce was not over powering and lightly seasoned with capers; the others ordered Taco Salad, a lot of food there and not spicy (chips could be separated since these got soggy); Chicken Marsala and no complaints there; finally Top Sirloin prepared medium which the guy didn't have any problems there either (I think he inhaled the steak). We didn't have any sides or desserts and since I'm with guests who don't drink, I didn't get my glass of wine (snuck back in our room and enjoyed a glass of chardonny). SERVICE & AMBIANCE: The service was fine and the staff was attentive. The waiter made sure we were taken care of, had several baskets of warm bread and the water was filled. The meal took some time to prepare but that was fine since driving hundreds of miles we were in no rush. I hate it when chicken comes out dry and hard so having it prepared just right was a treat. Overall, this place is worth considering. The menu is simple and food is not complex. Food is prepared and presented nicely. Price is reasonable for this class of restaurant. But if you enjoy a glass of wine, go with some folks who enjoy it also. Cheers! read more

As a first timer to this restaurant I was impressed by how clean and modern this establishment is. We were greeted and seated as soon we walked in, ordered a couple of beverages (the price for a local beer was steep) and then placed our food order. I have a theory that if you order a club sandwich, the boyfriend orders fish and chips, and they mess it up we don't go back, since it's hard to goof on a club or fried fish. I ordered a Cobb salad and he the cod fish and chips, the salad was a decent size but for $11 I expected more, the fish and chips were chewy and over cooked. The food looked fairly appealing but over all out gets a 1 star. I'm giving 3 since the server was nice (although did nothing when we mentioned the chewy cod) and the ambiance was decent. I did enjoy the open kitchen, but needless to say, we'll take our $30 to another restaurant next time we're in that area. read more

The Phoenix is on the East side of town in a very crowded area due to the surroundings. We walked in to watch the basketball game on the bar side and get some dinner but all of the seats were taken. We were asked if we wanted to sit on the restaurant side and we decided to do so instead of going somewhere else. Our server was a bit slow to begin with but when she came she was not very friendly considering she is in the customer service field. We tried cracking some jokes with her but it did not really work. We ended up ordering a few beers which did come fairly quick. The bread that they offer before the meals is delicious, its nice and soft and melts in your mouth. I ordered the Chicken Marsala and it was incredible. Every single bite was delicious. The best part was I was able to take my left overs home for the following day. I would recommend this place to large groups and anyone else as well. read more

We were a 16 person group of mostly adults with a four teenagers. We had reservations on a Saturday evening, so we were seated promptly. It was a few minutes before our drink order was taken, but the drinks came out promptly. I had the strawberry lemonade which was yummy but unremarkable in itself. No appetizers were ordered. The place seemed a bit noisy at first (they were busy), but not horribly so. I ordered the special of hazelnut crusted halibut with mashed potatoes, asparagus, and berry coulis. It was outstanding. Two other ladies ordered the same and held the same opinion. My husband and son had the cajun shrimp scampi. It had great flavor and big shrimp. I thought the sauce was a bit on the thin side, but that is a minor complaint. My step-mother had the Chicken Parm and she said it was good, but I thought it looked a little run of the mill. When dessert time came, I ordered the burnt creme and my aunt next to me ordered the Key lime. My burnt creme was excellent. Just excellent. My aunt said the key lime was also excellent and I thought both were well presented. The key lime pie was adorable. My son ordered a strange dessert of vanilla ice cream with a balsamic vinegar reduction over it. Okay. He ate about half, passed it around for people to taste and ended up trading it with my other son for his tuxedo cheesecake. I thought it was a new and interesting turn on ice cream, but I would never order it. Overall, a very pleasant experience. Wouldn't go back. Our service was very slow, and the place wasn't even very crowded. Food was mediocre, not amazing. I thought the menu was rather challening to find good things for a family on. One daughter got chicken parm., which she liked , but it came with mashed potatoes. An odd combo to me. We did like our spinach artichoke hot dip...that was a different style than Applebees or Olive Garden and was quite nice. Otherwise, expensive for the quality and the fact that service was so slow. I liked the atmosphere here, we sat on the patio. My boyfriend was not very impressed with this place, and I liked it a bit more than he. The caprese salad was delic! Our drinks were a bit on the pricey side for the size (smaller glasses) and they were not the tastiest drinks either. Our dinners were ok, and the desert was really good, we had the volcano cake, which you can get that anywhere, and lets face it, it comes to the restaurants frozen. I think the Phoenix suffers from an identity crisis. In trying to be all things to all eastsiders... it fails across the board. The only thing that saves it from a one-star rating is the wide variety of beers on tap and cocktail suggestions (and execution of suggested drinks). That being said, dinner wasn't bad and the service was OK. Menu items range in price from $4 to $40. But even the specials don't seem very "special". It's hard to get excited about a restaurant when I stand over the seafood and meat cases near the cooks (at COSTCO) on a regular basis. Lazy? Don't feel like cooking? Not feeling like waiting for a table downtown? The Phoenix is probably the place to be. Just don't expect more than you're going to get, and you'll like it just fine... read more

To preface, we got ours to go, so this is a review for the food, not really the restaurant. Though, we did walk around for a minute and the lounge area looked kind of nice. Laid-back setting. The prices were a little high for a restaurant on the outskirts of town. The only thing that was reasonable were the two chicken dishes and the pomadoro pasta dish. I ordered the pomadoro, with chicken added. This made it go from $12 to $15. I also ordered the french onion soup. My husband had the chicken picatta. First of all, the hostess that packed our food up was really helpful. She even made a point of putting utensils in the bag before we even arrived, in case we were from a hotel. They made sure to pack the picatta sauce separately from the meal so it didn't leak all over everything.....Pretty thoughtful. When we got home, I opened my food and it looked fresh. There was a mountain of pasta, with fresh-looking tomatoes and a big pile of spinach. Sliced on the side was a (what seemed to be) grilled chicken breast. It was all really good, to be honest, and definitely hit the spot. Perhaps a little too good? I'm pretty certain the "chicken breast" they use is pressed chicken breast meat. Perhaps, and most likely, even the pre-grilled stuff. Where it was sliced it had the aeration that chicken nuggets get, a kind of bubbly look. And yes, it was delicious and moist. And yes, if that is what it was, the ingredients look something like this: CHICKEN BREAST, CHICKEN BROTH, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: DEXTROSE, POTASSIUM LACTATE (FOR FLAVOR), SALT, POTASSIUM AND SODIUM PHOSPHATE, YEAST EXTRACT, NATURAL FLAVOR, MALTODEXTRIN. COATED WITH DEHYDRATED GARLIC AND ONION, FLAVORINGS, SALT, MALTODEXTRIN, MODIFIED FOOD STARCH, SUNDRIED TOMATOES, SUGAR, YEAST EXTRACT, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, DEHYDRATED LEMON PEEL, DEHYDRATED PARSLEY, LEMON JUICE SOLIDS, DISODIUM INOSINATE AND DISODIUM GUANYLATE, ASCORBIC ACID. They had $25+ beef on their menu, and I can only imagine what kind of corners they're cutting while charging those prices. This place would be worth it if they had realistic prices for what they were serving. It didn't taste bad, but it reminded me of those episodes of Kitchen Nightmares where the restaurant is calling their frozen, imported lobster "maine lobster", or the episode almost exactly like this where they say they have a certain cut of meat, but they've actually been using cheap stuff the entire time. Long story short, they're charging the same prices as very nice, organic and sustainable restaurants downtown, while serving crap food to make more money. You might as well go elsewhere. Oh, and like another reviewer said, the french onion soup WAS too salty. read more

Although the presentation was great, the mashed potatos apparently were instant. They were really wet and tasteless. The service also sucked. Got there at 8.42 PM was told the dining area closes at 9:00 but you can order in the bar area ok! Sit and wait till 8:55 the gal comes by does not ask what can I get you instead she tells me that the dinner menu closes at 9:00 and walked away i said to my wife with a rather loud voice what the hell I have 5min. Debra is always so friendly and helpful that when no one in our house wants to cook she's the one I call to place a to go order of fish & chips. Cod or halibut both were great. I went here with family for a birthday dinner last month. While the food was good, the service was beyond horrible. After being seated, our server was very prompt in taking our drink orders. My grandmother needed a minute to look over the wine list, so our server left and came back five minutes later with waters. When she came back, my grandmother had forgotten the name of the wine she wanted and just needed to look down at the list again to confirm. However, our server said she would give her another minute and come back later. She didn't come back by our table for at least another thirty minutes. By this time, we had all been ready to order for quite awhile and commented on how long it was taking. During this time, she had walked by our table several times but avoided eye contact. Finally, 45 minutes after our initial drink orders, she came back with the wine and the house bread. By this point, we were starving. After ordering, the food didn't take very long to come out. I had the fried chicken sandwich and it was really good. I've never had this kind of experience anywhere else. From a restaurant like this, I expected better service. Especially since she wouldn't make eye contact with us and never stopped to check in at all during that first half an hour.
