    Blackened NY steak
    Robin S.

The Phoenix was recommended as a good place for a steak that won't hurt your wallet (much). And it offers quite a lot of options for those who don't eat meat. We had a table for three reserved for 6 on a weeknight and while we were seated almost immediately, the restaurant was quite busy. - Blackened NY steak: Nicely blackened, not 'melt in your mouth' but very good. It's not a huge cut. Maybe Blacksmith, Brickhouse, Bos Taurus or Kayo's might offer a marginally better steak but they also charge more. - Salmon piccata: excellent rendition of salmon. - 'Chefs' vegetable side: a bit disappointing, actually. Green beans needed a little further cooking and the carrots & broccoli were bland. Needs seasoning and maybe another choice of vegetables. I think the chef phoned this one in. - Baked potato: perfectly cooked. Love the all-booth seating in the dining room. A bit loud in the restaurant. Music is unnecessary. Great service. Tap list is pretty extensive for a restaurant. I like that they have details on each beer on the back of the menu. Speaking of, why do restaurants only give a table of three one drink menu? Never understood that. I'll try to peel myself away from the brewpubs in town and visit occasionally.

Good food and good service. We were able to walk right in for a table. Next time we're in Bend we will be going back.

I like the happy hour. But don't order the shrimp skewers. They really need to take it off the Happy Hour menu. Burnt and cold.

But this place in Bend... this is serious burger territory. First thing you notice: they're not messing around with the menu. Just burgers that understand what a burger is supposed to be. Double patty. Brioche bun. Cheese doing its job. America. I ordered The O.G. because I respect tradition. American cheese, caramelized onions, burger sauce. Simple system. Works great. Like a pickup truck that starts every time. My buddy got The Popper which is basically what happens when a jalapeño popper and a burger start collaborating. Bacon, jalapeño cream cheese, ranch. It looked like something a scientist made to test the limits of happiness. Fries were solid. Soda cold. No weird nonsense. Just burgers doing burger things. Only reason it's 4 stars instead of 5 is because if I lived closer I would probably eat here too often and that feels medically irresponsible. I'd give it 6 stars if Yelp understood burgers better.

Between the exceptionally good food at Hook and Plow, a most pleasant hotel experience, and a memorable trip to the High Desert Museum; our trip to Bend turned out to be a pleasure instead of the miserableness I expected. We had the Steak Tartare, the Chef's Board, the Blackend Crabcake, the Pear and Burrata Salad, and the Bone-in Pork Chop. We each got the cheesecake for desert and split the other dishes. This was more than enough for the three of us and we left full, happy, and with three large to-go boxes. The flavors of the various dishes were amazing. While all the dishes were vvery good, the standouts to me were the steak Tartare, the Pear and Burrata Salad, and the Cheesecake.

We were greeted by the host and seated quickly. We started our meal with a delicious non-alcoholic drink and the Chef's Board: a charcuterie with an assortment of cured meats, rustic bread, and various spreads. That came out pretty quickly. Unfortunately, our main courses came out much, much later and lukewarm. Luckily, the food was good enough that it made up for the temperature. I had the NY strip steak. The steak and the Boursin mashed potatoes alone were very good. The pickled onions and chimichurri complemented the meat very well. The meal was supposed to include brussel sprouts but came with a grilled broccoli cauliflower assortment instead. My wife had the Scallop Risotto which was also a great recommendation from the server. In reality, The Hook & Plow deserved 3 1/2 stars but that's not an option on Yelp. It may have been an off night for the staff, so I will give them the benefit of doubt. We would be open to trying it again sometime in the future.

One thing we didn't get but looked awesome: I don't know if we missed out on some gem, but so many people were getting the burgers/fries from one truck. Also, so many other people were getting stuff from the Thai truck. And to top it off... the beer/cider station had an awesome deal. For about the same price you'd pay for a typical pint, they pour about 20 ounces of happy beverage into a taller than I expected glass. So if you're hankering for the mac n cheese or shrimp n grits or veg burger or any of the menu items, after today they are history. I started eating at The Drake in their first week of business and had many, many, many meals there over the years but things change and so, it seems, has the popularity of The Drake. Now the good news. The new owners are a trio and one of them is also one of the owners of the inestimable Ken's Artisan Pizza in Portland that opened its' Bend location last year. (Go! Even if you have to stand in line for 45 minutes like I did.) The first news of this ownership change was that they would keep the name and current focus of The Drake. But local television news reports that after The Drake closes today it will be reimagined with a new name and design and menu. The opening for the new place is currently said to be Memorial Day weekend. I don't live in Bend anymore but there is still a family home there and so I visit on occasion and knowing a "Ken's" owner is involved in the new enterprise may make me brave the wicked-bad downtown parking to try this new place. We came here on a Monday night and they told us that the bone in wings were $.50 a piece so we ordered seven wings for $3.50 and they normally are $13. Good deal. Great deal if they taste good. We also ordered a large Regina margarita pizza for $23. We are eating in and nobody else is. Most people are coming by to carry out. The pizza came so quickly. It took all of seven minutes from ordering to serve us the pizza. The pizza was cooked and then they threw the cherry tomatoes on after it had cooked. So they were like biting into a cold tomato on top of my pizza. I thought the pizza tasted salty. The crust was very thick and soft around the edges. The cheese never pulled on the pizza. It was like it was pre-made and then thrown into the oven. The crust of the pizza is very chewy and soft. The wings were presented in a beautiful way. Sliced celery and carrots accompanied the dish. The wings were large. The barbecue sauce had a very smoky taste to it. The wings were tough to chew. The sauce was way too heavy. It was sitting and dripping with sauce. Not really the way I like my chicken wings. Not sure what the draw is to this pizzeria. It sits next to a Latin cuisine that was closed the evening we came. It is also attached to the end of a very large building that is empty and unoccupied. I had high hopes for this pizzeria joint. However, other than the super friendly girl that took our order, everything else was a big disappointment. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
