I have heard great things about Ocean Floor and most of the people there are very friendly and helpful. I went to purchase a common pleco and the man that helped was very rude. I do not mind when people ask about aquarium size and what else is in the tank etc, I think that's important to keep from selling fish to people that may not be educated in the hobby. However the guy that helped was aggressive and condensending in his questioning to the point that I stopped answering his questions. He asked why I was getting a pleco, I told him I like Plecos and enjoy them in my tank, I had one that recently passed away but I had testing my water with a master kit to ensure nothing was wrong with it. To which he responded "so you want to make your tank worse by adding a pleco" in a very rude and condescending tone. I don't know if it was because I am a female or because I had children with me, but if I didn't have the kids with me I would have walked out without purchasing any fish. I had intended to buy other fish there but did not and I will not return. I've been in the hobby for years and know what I'm doing. read more

What's the deal with some staff here?? particularly with a couple of guys toward the back of the store. I didn't get the names but one is a red head covered in tattoos and also a tall long hair guy.. I mean do you want to sell fish or not? I have gone into this place multiple times to purchase some fresh water fish and almost every time I'm there is like, they discourage you from making any purchases on fish. They ask you all these probing questions about your tank and if you don't answer the questions according to their satisfaction, no fish for you even though you've been there multiple times. I have to say, these guys in particular have very poor customer service skills. I get it, you knowledgeable in your field but your customer service skills suck. I have been wanting to visit this place for a long time since it is 17,000 sq ft of aquariums and fish supplies. I happened to be in the neighborhood today, so I stopped by. It was ok at best, nothing spectacular. Some tanks were covered in algae while some were clean. What really threw me off was the long dead discus fish on the floor. Yes, they can jump, but this guy had been there quite some time. Please take some time and clean your store and tanks. read more

Update: my review has changed completely with my recent visit, I spoke with Neil. who was more then helpful, he walked me through some things I wasn't quite understanding and helped me find the gear I needed and more. I came in looking to buy some fine padding for my canister filter and ended up getting that and over $150 of other items he recommended. He also walked me through the upgraded c02 process and showed me exactly how his works and everything so I'm coming back in to upgrade that as well. The store needs a bathroom. I had a nasty first experience with the store, so doubt that I will ever go back. It's an hour drive for me, but I really wanted to check it out (I moved to AZ from CO this past summer). So, I drove for an hour, just to check out the store. Needless to say, I needed to use a restroom before driving back home for another hour. However, right on the door there is an unfriendly note that no public bathroom is available. I talked to an employee explaining that I drove an hour just for the store (which I was honestly not impressed with as most plants were algae-stricken, but that's another story) and that I needed to use a bathroom before driving back home for another hour. The employee refused me bathroom access saying that the bathroom is not "up to the standard". I told her that I could not care less about "the standard", that I just needed to pee before the second hour-long drive. The employee did not budge, suggesting that I walk around and check restaurants near by for a bathroom access. Well, I had to do just that, and it was a pretty humiliating experience. Hayden explained about the fish and gave me additional info so I didn't overcrowd my tank or stress my other fish. He was very nice and personable and just a great kiddo. If you haven't been here in the last 6 months to a year, you owe it to yourself and the newly re-focused management to take the trip. Living in Mesa we don't usually go north, but we try to visit everyone at least once a year. The change is evident the minute you walk in. More organized, open and friendly. Greeted when we walked in. No dust on the displays, nicely organized merchandise. Lots of staff doing maintenance and cleaning. The salt water section has seen the biggest improvement. Even at the end of a holiday weekend, the tanks were clean and organized, and I think its a good sign that many were empty. It means they sold a lot of stuff over the weekend. We will definitely find time to visit more often. read more

Went here today, just got a new aquarium and didn't know anything about the different types of fish. Some mellow some aggressive. Then Del come over to help us. This guy was awesome. Showed what fish to get for a mellow tank. Got us the plants, food and chemicals we needed. I wanted to buy more fish, he told me not to overload the tank bring them in gradually. Oceans Floor has been in Arizona a long time. The store is an old, converted skating Rink to give you an idea of the size. They have a huge selection of tanks, equipment and supplies. Good selection of freshwater fish, salt water fish selection is hit or miss. Staff are usually helpful, although it can be hit or miss. So why the low rating? Cost, cleanliness and health of fish. They are one of the more expensive stores in town, even on MAP items that are the same, expected price everywhere else. That being said, if you need something now, they probably gave it, but you'll pay more for it. The store and stock are always dusty, and on a recent trip, I pulled several boxes of date-expired stock, have it to an employee who said, "thanks" and immediately put them back on the shelf. read more

I have been a customer here for two years. I have only had good customer service at this fish store and up until 4 days ago, I've never had a fish die or have had any problems. I took advantage of their recent buy one get one for a penny sale. One fish did great, the other died four day later, same tank. I test my water parameters with API Master test kit. My Ammonia is 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate between 5 & 10, PH 8 (150g African Cichlid tank) I do weekly water changes of 30% and dechlorinate with Prime. I do substrate and filter maintenance about every six weeks and only use tank water to clean filter media. I understand that my biological bacteria health is important for good fish health. My tank is over filtrated and under stocked. Having said all that, I came in Knowing my water quality was good, but worried because of the reviews on here about their fish policy. I brought in my water sample, deceased fish and receipt. Jason tested my water and got the same readings I did. He helped me pick out a replacement fish of the same value and I was on my way home in under 15 mins. He was pleasant and very helpful. There is nothing wrong with their fish replacement policy if your tank water is good for your species of fish. Their fish quality is good and I have four tanks in my fish room to prove it. Make sure your water quality is good and there is no issue. Sometimes fish just die even in the best of environments. I'm happy my experience with my first return was good because I have bought juvenile fish from here that grew to be better quality than some I've bought from a breeder and I am happy to keep coming here. read more

This place is a joke when it comes to warranty on freshwater fish, I have large tank with 8 tiny fish from petsmart all still alive and we got 5 more tiny fish from theoceanfloor 2 days ago and they are all dead they said they needed to do a water test so I tested it before I got their to make sure everything was ok and it was pretty good but when they tested it, was off the chart just another way to save money not planning on returning to this store I'll drive even further if I have to get get my supplies for my other fish. read more

I am going to be cautiously positive about The Ocean Floor. It is right across the street from Pizza a Metro, so Hubby and I stopped in for a short while before they closed last night. Hubby is the Aqua-Man, so he had read in his tank-geek chat rooms that The Ocean Floor was a disaster of a place, with bad livestock, and that they were even getting out of the reef (salt water) side of the pet fish business. We did not see evidence that any of this was true. The tank they have as soon as you walk in is shockingly huge- it's like a wall of water, containing three fish that looked like they could eat a chihuahua as an amuse bouche. Although it was not the most pristine place, it was freaking huge- by far the biggest aquarium store in the valley (and I have been to most of 'em- sigh... damn the newlywed supportiveness). The salt water side was smaller than the fresh, but almost all the fish looked good and the corals were OK- no worse than some other stores that are far better rated by the tank-geeks. We bought 2 blue-green chromis fish, so we'll see how they do. The young man who helped us was very nice, and seemed quite knowledgeable. They usually have reef stew and are also set up to run chem tests and seem to have a very large and comprehensive selection of chemical additives for the DIY-capable like Hubby. It's becoming harder and harder to find a store that sells a breadth of equipment, aquarium supplies, chemicals, fish, and has knowledgeable sales people. Most PetSmarts and Petcos have fish departments and some, but not all, carry the more popular freshwater fish. But what if you have a question? Sure, they have an 18 year old on hand who can probably help answer questions that you could have just as easily googled but not with the more difficult questions. I found Ocean Floor years ago and it hasn't changed much over the years - and that's a good thing! It's a well run, local business. You name it, they have it. And, they not only have it, they'll have a few to choose from. Not sure what to get? Every employee I've ever talked to was able to assist and answered questions that I didn't even think to ask. I've purchased a number of fish from this store and I've never had a problem with them in my well maintained 55 gallon aquarium. You'd be wise to sign up for their email newsletter (no, they don't spam you every day) - they have some pretty good sales on equipment, supplies and fish. Yes, their prices are a bit higher than the chain stores but how important is it to save a dollar or two and either buy the wrong product or do some serious damage to your aquarium? Ocean floor is east of the I-17 and Thomas on the south side of the street. Right next to Chevron. Walking in there is a huge selection of tanks. Ranging from about 10 gallon kits to hundreds of gallon tanks costing about the same to buy a house. I've been around to a lot of the bigger shops and Ocean Floor has the best selection. Their salt water selection is varied, although relatively small. They offer eels, fish, crabs. I also saw a single seahorse at the time of this writing. They also offer salt water flora. They have an excellent show tank for their corals. Definitely makes me want to start a saltwater tank. Great selection of foods, lighting, decorations, gravel, rocks, driftwood. Fresh water selection is awesome. Big goldfish tank, fun to watch. No matter if you have a 300 gallon or a 10 gallon tank, they'll have fish for you. The negative is that they haven't expanded on freshwater planted tanks. They offer no substrate for planted tanks. The prices for accessories seem on par, though I was sold a larger power filter than I needed. I've been reading reviews about the price of the fish being too high, but I haven't bought fish from them yet. The price for the plants were reasonable, under $5. Other than that, it's a great place. Great friendly staff. I've had someone open a box for me just to show me what it looks like and how it functions. Even if you just 'like' fish and don't even have a tank, or maybe you have a tank sitting in the garage, this place is definitely worth a visit. You won't be disappointed. read more

I am a long time keeper of both salt water, fresh water, and fresh water planted tanks. I spend a tremendous amount of money on supplies with my 5 large tanks. I spent an hour shopping in the store with no customer service, with no hello or may I help you from anyone. I have come to this place a few different times over the years hoping for a better experience. Previous times I have left because of their outrageous prices. One time I cancelled a $5000 tank delivery because I found out they sold it to me at a 97% interest rate. I have a medical condition that forces me to have to pee about every hour. I drive down there today because I got an email about some interesting fish they had on sale and in stock. Their sale prices bring it down to the average cost for those fish. I was willing to spend the money tonight. After an hour of creating a list worth at least $1000 I had to pee. I patiently wait in line at the check out counter to ask. When I finally get a chance to ask, the woman looks me up and down and with an unfriendly unemotional response said no. I understand that this place is in the ghetto, however, I would expect them to realize and make an exception for someone that hasn't stumbled in from the street. I drive a 2015 $45K Cadillac, my salary is in the high 6 figures and I have a passion for keeping fish. I am well dressed and a valuable customer to a company that is looking to make money. Especially with their very high margin. But unfortunately I had to leave without buying anything to go across the street to use the restroom. As I sit here in my car in the Arby's parking lot. Thanks Arby's, I will be back. I will not be back to the Ocean Floor ever. Now off on my 45 mile drive back home. A good reminder to any owner is to teach your employees that you never know who someone is or how much money they are willing to spend. I've been here probably 100 times over 5 years. I feel like it's slowly going downhill. The last few times I've pretty much said each time I won't come back.. They are knowledgeable but they don't practice what they preach except in their display tanks where you can't buy the merch anyway. There are always dead dying fish in the purchase tanks and the plants aren't doing well. Plant selection in general is pretty dismal. Except in the display tanks! See above. The last time I bought a plant there I brought home Planaria. The tank was running with just water in it for weeks before with no issues. Since there were no fish it was treated relatively easily. Soft water freshwater fish are being kept in relatively cold alkaline waters, so when you get them home into your tank with correct temp and ph parameters they are likely to die. (they did replace my fish after a water test) Avoid at all costs the dwarf (pea) puffer tank. I was horrified to see 20+ of the tiny puffers sucked into the filter intake and rotting! I went back a few days later and the rest suffered the same fate. ahhh! Luckily I was able to steer my child away from seeing that horror. If you go on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday or Thursday before they get their weekly fish shipment there is no selection. They won't special order fish quantities under 100. They keep their store betta in one of those horrific befta cubes :( Oh well. read more

Answering all my questions for gettin my tank set up as far as soil substrate, CO2 questions, and lighting. He even gave me advice on how to make sure that I don't end up with leaks with the sponge filter as well which made me very grateful. I love this store. I kept fish when I was a kid and as an adult I wanted to start a small five gallon aquarium. But I had no idea how not to kill the fish. After a less than helpful stop at Petco, I ventured down to the Ocean Floor after seeing so many positive reviews. They were right! I stumbled in feeling kind of nervous, but the guys working here were extremely helpful. They went over the tank and filter I had already purchased with me and walked me around to make sure I didn't get anything that would outgrow my tank, and pointed out the fish I could begin with. I wish I could remember the guys name who helped me, but he was so nice. He made sure to give me a ton of information, and even told me to call if I had any questions. I walked out with two platys that are still swimming along four months later! Thank you Ocean Floor! I will be a customer of this store forever! read more

This place has the best quality fish in town BY FAR, as well as an amazing selection. Prices are also good. The only reason I am not giving them 5 stars is SOME of the people that work there can make you feel stupid and are not that helpful. Come here every week with my daughter "just" to feed the Kois however always walk out with a couple of things. My daughter absolutely loves fish and it's like a trip to the aquarium for her with all of their selections. Can't go a minute without someone asking if you need help or if you have questions everyone is really helpful and if someone isn't quite versed with the topic of your question they immediately find you someone who is. Neil has always been really helpful and insightful, I seem to always steal about 20 minutes of his day with questions and brainstorms as to what I want to do next and he always steers me in the right direction. Yes you can find better prices online or from big box stores but you don't get the same service or experience which makes paying $2 or $3 more for something well worth it. read more

Also a decent reptile section. The Fantastic Mr. It's Complicated has a couple huge aquariums. The freshwater is set up and has had some fishes for years. The saltwater is notably bigger - and not currently set up. He wanted some new fishes and some plants for the freshwater tank, and this is his store of choice. He chose plants and a couple Baal sharks, and suggested I pick a fish I liked. I don't know much about fish, but really liked the shape and grace of the black angelfish, so he got one for me. This is a great place for help, advice, and even fish! Our fish journey started over 2 years ago when Junior brought home a goldfish from our local carnival appropriately named "Carnie". My wife and I had never had fish as pets before, so we had no idea how to go about setting up a tank or how to make a proper home for our new pet. Our first stop was Petsmart, and a little over $100 later we were on our way home with a new tank and a couple of new friends for Carnie. While somewhat helpful, the kids at Petsmart are not experts on fish, and most of their advice/suggestions were generic. Well, our fish were not doing so well; so the following weekend, we tried a fish store in the north valley. This place smelled horrible, and there were tanks with dead fish in them. The man at the counter was not helpful at all and seemed to be in a great rush to get us out the door. After leaving this place, I remembered a "fish store" down on Thomas Road by I-17 that had been there a very long time. After a quick phone search, we were off to the Ocean Floor. We have not gone anywhere else since. The Ocean Floor has been wonderful to us. Helpful with advice and never in a rush to get us out the door. On the weekends, the store is very busy, so you may have to wait for a while to get some help. Rest assured, when you get help, it's from people who know fish, enjoy fish, and are active in the hobby. They are not just there filling a spot. I want to give a huge shout out to Neil, the manager. Neil has gone above and beyond with my son. He has taken an unbelievable amount of time to help my son learn and understand not only the hobby of fish keeping, but even some of the science behind the hobby that helps in keeping clean, healthy tanks. Neil has been very patient with all of our questions and has been a great guide on not only fish, but on filters, heaters, lights, plants, and all of the other things that are needed to enjoy the hobby. Big store, cool to see, but makes for big prices. I stop in about once a year just to see if anything in Saltwater section is a good deal, most of the time I walk out empty handed. Many other shops in town offering the same items at better prices and same knowledge and better customer service. Well, I'm only speaking for the live fish section of the store...their "advice" is absolutely made up by uneducated hourly wage workers who have no idea what they are talking about. They are happy to sell you a fish that will eat through your entire aquarium, leaving you wondering why a new fish is floating on the surface every day. When you come to find out it's because Ocean Floor is run by people who care more about selling you something than helping you run a functioning aquarium, you'll stop shopping here too.
