I am so disgusted by their customer service!!! My dad went in there today to ask for an exchange or return of our freshwater fish (who died 3 days after purchasing it). We first went in (before buying the fish) to get our water tested), the results came out good and we went ahead and bought the fish. Forward to today my dad took in the dead fish with the water sample AND receipt for an exchange/return. They said they wouldn't do a return/exchange due to the water being bad! Ummmmm! What!!?? YOU GUYS APPROVED THE WATER BEFORE WE BOUGHT THE FISH! I even called before to make sure they could do the exchange AND NOT WASTE ANYONES TIME. Yet they went ahead and did the opposite!? If you live in phoenix or Scottsdale you know that there is no competition even close to the magnitude and selection offered at the ocean floor! I have purchased many fish through this store and have always been very happy with the quality and health of the fish I have purchased from here!!! Today my fiancé and I came in looking to stock our well developed 20 and 10 gallon! On this busy Sunday there was one particular worker (LUIS) who saw us looking around and offered us his help! I have never ran into a more knowledgeable and well rounded sales associate in my entire life. We had many questions regarding what we could add to our pretty specific aquariums and through his immense knowledge we were able to talk with him and come up with a game plan that would work for for our existing fish. He suggested neon tetra (schooling fish) and silver tip tetras for both the tanks and I could not be happier! Luis also aided us in finding us some plants that would be compatible with a good light system, and no co2!!! You can tell mr Luis has been into the hobby for quite some time and has experience in most types of freshwater fish! He even helped me in pick out a MALE bristle nose Pleco which can sometimes be difficult to tell the gender when young, immediately within putting it in my tank with a very Gravid female they immediately began to start breeding! The Ocean Floor is a cool little shop with tanks upon tanks of gorgeous fishes, reptiles, and frogs. They even have a neat little koi pond complete with bridge. Baba W. recently got back into fishies and to our surprise, this store is still around. This place has been here forever and I hope it never goes away. Their fishes are definitely a prettier penny than say Petco but the quality is there. It sounds silly but you can really tell a difference! She walked around the entire store for me just to answer my 1000+ questions, and she also helped me add fish based on what I already had. People rarely take the time out of their day to help people, and you were very helpful and did not get annoyed by things I could have simply googled. Absolutely beautiful store, it is bigger than it looks from the outside in there and there is a lot to look at and explore. The employees are knowledgeable and helpful (once you get one). But the store is clean, well stocked, and organized. The fish themselves look healthy and well cared for and seem ok. It is a bit pricey but for the quality I am sure it is well worth it. I've found this place after being a newbie and making a mistake.. I got fish at petsmart, and horrible advice that led to all of my fish dying but one. Noah at Ocean Floor helped me figure out what possibly happened, explained how to properly set up a tank, got me set up with a bigger aquarium and educated me on so many different things. I mean, I'm pretty sure I had a million questions, and he answered them all. The selection of fish was amazing. My kids were in awe of this place. The Koi pond/river was rad. They are monstrous! So I drove over 100 miles because I heard good things. I'm at checkout and spending $343, and ask where the restroom is. I'm told the restroom is not for the public, but just to go next door to McDonalds!!!!! (After spending $343 and I told them how far I drove.) So I went next door to McDonalds, the restrooms were locked and was informed even if I bought something it was closed!! So I had to drive down the street to Jack In Box, and spend $ to get to use the bathroom. This is very unacceptable. The Ocean Floor shop is in a bad neighborhood and I can understand not letting people OFF the street to use the restrooms, but customers, REALLY? I will not be back. read more

I was recommended by a neighbor who has a huge pond with about 20+ Koi and 50+ other fish. This store did not disappoint. They had a huge selection in salt water fish and a great selection on freshwater fish. One of my favorite features of the store is the Koi pond you walk over on a small bridge. I would have gave it 5 stars but one of the employees in the back freshwater section was very depressed and it felt like I was bothering him trying to purchase some plants. I was polite and asked him since he wasn't busy. Other than that I would return to the store if I ever needed anything else for my freshwater setup. Recommended for: larger aquariums, aquarium technology, snails, hard-to-find freshwater fish I might go elsewhere for: nano tanks, plants Overall I'm quite fond of the Ocean Floor, I'm a regular customer at this point. I'm very happy with the freshwater fish and snails I've purchased here, and I haven't lost any so far. Good mix of popular and hard-to-find livestock. Thanks to the large showroom (former roller rink), they also have a fantastic selection of tanks and technology, including Aqueon canister filters (good technology at a good value) and high-end Fluval lights (worth the investment in my experience). Now for the downsides... as other reviewers have pointed out, the customer service is hit or miss. I've had a consistently positive experience working with Dallen, and if you do your own species research online you'll be fine, just don't take whatever the employees say as gospel regarding the livestock. I've also purchased plants that were either packaged in a weird way and therefore failing to thrive at the store, or that, in one notable instance, came with parasites. So I no longer use the Ocean Floor for plants, but I definitely still use them for my other aquarium needs. 4 out of 5 stars, definitely check them out. Have fun! read more

I was in town to search for fish or any handy supplies. I had some past experiences for decades in the valley, but unfortunately it seems this place is becoming a shell of its former self. There is less excitement with its pricey inventory that I'd rather opt in to buy online and the spirituality of its current employees is lacking as I last remember much different staffs a few years ago. It was a golden go-to local fish shop, but it appears the LFS won't have a bright future, unless they can make changes to turn around. So the thing is, they are okay selling diseased fish. I have purchased fish here before and they were fine, but this time not so much. I asked about some apistogramma (a $40 fish) because they had NFS on the tank. The sales guy checked with the manager and he said it was a mistake and wiped the NFS off the tank saying they had been in quarantine but the the NFS should have been taken off the tank because they were cleared. Not so much.. glad I quarantine all new livestock! Take away : Ocean Floor sells sick fish! Lesson: don't trust Ocean Floor and quarantine your new fish! read more

My husband and I surprised our 10-year old daughter with a 72-Gallon Bow Front Aqueon Aquarium. We found Ocean Floor where Jamison helped us and we told him our plan. Instead of getting the $300 stand, we decided to have one custom made by our cabinet guy who was already doing built in desks in our office. (He measured, drew up plans and reinforced the portion for the aquarium based on our requirements & specs.) We spent about $2,600 that day, didn't even take anything home and had to set back our date of installation until the custom cabinet was in place. Jamison and all of the Ocean Floor people knew this. 3 weeks later, we had their installation guys (Ramon & another guy) bring out the aquarium materials and set it up, which was another $500. Our cabinet guy was there at the same time and they raved about what an excellent job he did. They even asked for pictures to post to Ocean Floor's website. 10 days after our install, we walk into the office to put chemicals in the water (it's so new we don't even have fish yet) and there is water all over the floor, soaked our brand new custom cabinets, floors, boxes with business & personal documents, etc. My husband immediately called Ocean Floor to speak with Jamison. When they talked they figured it might've been a seal that went bad. He said he had to tell the owner and call us back. Long story short, Jamison called us back (the owner didn't even have the decency to call us) and said because we didn't use their $300 Aqueon stand that it wasn't under warranty!!!! First, they tried to blame it on our cabinet guy, then they tried to say it was something that we must've done. He said that if it had leaked while they were doing the install they could've replaced it. Jamison offered to swap out the aquarium at cost. He then said we'd have to call Aqueon ourselves to find out about their warranty. We never signed anything waiving a warranty. They all knew we were building a custom cabinet for the aquarium which was 100 times sturdier and better than their $300 Aqueon stand and now they won't provide us with a copy of our receipt! This is NOT how a local business we were trying to support should operate. It's completely unethical and deceitful! $8,600 in FLOODING DAMAGE: flooring, brand new custom cabinets, etc. and we're out $3,000 + on the aquarium, pump, filter, heaters, installation, accessories. Worst of all, our daughter's heart is broken because she's read dozens of books and done months of research on how to be a fish keeper. They are even refusing to supply us with a copy of our original receipts and other paperwork that our attorney has requested. SO SHADY!!! DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THEM!!! See you in court! read more

Is there an option to do a negative star? I used to come to This place when I first moved here a year ago because my boyfriend is really into fish. I was calling around trying to get information about items I can purchase for discus's because I wanted to know if they had the items I was looking for at this store. When I spoke with someone, he was very rude and laughed throughout the convo as if I didn't know what I was talking or asking about. He basically told me he wouldn't sell me discus because "it's not a beginner fish". First of all, I have 5 and have had them for a while now. I was just only calling to see if they had the items I wanted at this location like discus buffer and discus trace. I was not trying to buy a discus at this location because I've had terrible experiences in the past with purchasing fish from here that just end up dying the next day. I've bought the same exact fish from another store and I have had no issues whatsoever. This place is over priced and the workers are very rude. If you want fish that stay alive, don't come here. Go to tropical treasures! The owner is very nice and more knowledgeable than these shit heads. read more

Every time I come in here it seems like it takes forever to get help, and when I do decide to buy an expensive fish or piece of coral it never lives!! (It's NOT my tank, I have coral & fish from other stores and people that have survived for years.) I have also gotten bad advice before from one of the sales associates, who was clearly not old enough to know any better. This is an amazing fish store. I have had 10-12 tanks over the last 20 years. Stop by for the experience. They have a creek through the store and many different reptiles to view or buy. Staff knowledge is amazing and they will help anyone from beginner to experienced. They are sometimes hard to talk too and that is why only 4 stars. I have never had angel fish but always wanted them. They did a great job at pairing them with my 60 gallon tank. I will go back here and buy more fish but they have much more to offer. read more

I'm really disappointed with this place. I frequent this place because they have good products and unique, affordable stock but their employees are really undertrained and/or need a refresher in customer service. I'm not sure if it's everyone having to wear masks and thinking that they can get away with being rude or what, but I had this employee that I had help me with freshwater fish. Not sure if he was new or not but I had a feeling I had more experience than him- honestly not upset about that, everyone's got to start somewhere They had a deal on black neon tetras- 6 for $10, a great deal. I asked for 6 of those and then I wanted 3 king koopa snails, which they had another great deal for 3 for $10. The employee told me they didn't have king koopas and that they only had one type of snail, which was in another tank. He told me they were all the same snail and that they only sold out of one tank. The tank was clearly labeled king koopa and the snails looked different. I brought it up again and asked again for the king koopas which another employee confirmed they had. The wrong employee then disgruntledly and roughly grabbed me three snails and got me out of there as quickly as possible. I trusted that he got me what I asked him for. I get home and I only have 5 tetras. I also had 3 snails- two king koopas and another similar snail. It sucks because I really like this place but the help is terrible. The wrong/rude/new employee tried to overcharge me like $30 on my last visit too until I pointed out the deal to him. If you have salesman that help with fish, they at least should know what they are talking about and make sure they get the right fish at the right price. I know I should have checked before I left, but I honestly thought I could trust someone to get me the right quantifies of the same type of fish and snails. Edit: Go to Kona Reef instead, it's not far away. Much smaller shop with smaller freshwater selection, but at least the people there know what they sell and get me what I want consistently. read more

I normally don't write a lot of reviews unless the place blew my expectations away... So I bought a couple of clown fish from this store a couple months ago. The process of purchasing the fish was fast and simple. I was not pressured to buy additional things at the counter, unlike other fish stores. I was really impressed with this and I would typically give a four star review, but what happen to me yesterday has proven that The Ocean Floor is a five star place. Last night I had a tank emergency. The PVC ball valve cracked and was leaking a lot of water. My tank is 105 gallons so losing almost a gallon of water every five minutes was freaking me out. So I decided to call a few saltwater fish stores. One store I called advertises that they have "24 hour emergency service" for the Phoenix area. Well that was a lie after talking to them and seeing if they can help me. Plus, I forgot to mention it took about 10 minutes to finally speak with someone. After that whole ordeal, I figured I would call Ocean Floor since they were the last store open that night. Right off the bat, the guy I spoke to new exactly what was wrong and the parts that I needed to replace the valves. I didn't have to go through every detail of what happen like I did with the other stores. I was so excited about the news I told him I will be there in 15 minutes. I forgot to ask what his name was over the phone. When I walked up to the front counter and said "I called about a PVC ball valve" the lady knew exactly what I was talking about called an expert over to help me out with instructions. Finally, I got home with two new PVC ball valves to be on the safe side. Oh, and did I mention before that only one valve was cracked...? This is because The Ocean Floor guy was so confident in his knowledge it made me more confident to just replace both valves. Now my fish are safe and happy in there home. We went in there for a gold nugget fish 4 days ago and it died in 3 days after bringing it home. Me and my husband are experienced in raising fish and have several exotic and tropical fish and multiple tanks in our house. We did everything we could to nurse the fish to good health when we brought it home but couldn't save its failing health. The quality control for the fish here isn't that good and we won't be coming back for anymore fish. Giving a 2 star review because we were still happy with the selection in tanks because we brought another home the same day and it would now be our 3rd tank in our house and a good buy. The biggest issue I have with the place is their 'warranty' is really cruddy feeling. Like I feel they only have a fish warranty just to advertise they do but they really don't. The fish warranty is only good for fish under $10 and for 10 days. So when you buy anything over $10 their is no warranty. It's a weird business decision that you actually get less for your money the more expensive of a fish you buy as it's not very hard to buy fish over $10. It's Oh most like they don't stand by the health of the fish they sell and they know it and that's why they don't have a better warranty program. Anyways, stay away from this place if you're looking to buy fish unless it's a cheapo fishy, I'd still recommend this place if you're looking for a tank as they always have them in stock and at a affordable price. read more

Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, however service can lack when there is an influx of customers which is understandable. Only major criticism for this place would be the cleanliness at times.
