I was staying in Bakersfield for the night, and didn't feel like driving out for food or fast food - I guess I'm picky on a road trip! So, looking at Yelp, I noticed a nearby restaurant (a 10-minute walk from my hotel) and liked the menu, so off I went. I got to the hotel, and found the front door locked, but used the phone to get entry - a first for me, being "buzzed" into a restaurant! But given the location's convention-center-area vibes, I understand why. The restaurant is literally off the lobby, just to the right, and even from the exterior, it looks fancy and classy. But I kept going! I was seated quickly, and it was very quiet even though it was about 6:30 pm; luckily, there were no conventions in town! I was greeted by my server, Mike M., and knowing what I had already planned to order from my Yelp pre-trip scouting, I ordered the grilled cheese (Swiss and cheddar on sourdough) and a soup-of-the-day combination. The soup was a potato, leek, and cheese chowder type, which I do not often come across. I believe they also had a tomato bisque offering that day as well. The food arrived quickly, and the soup and sandwich were hot and fresh. The soup was absolutely delicious, thick, cheesy, and full of deep flavor. I could have had more and called it a meal! The sandwich was also cheesy and tasty, always great comfort food. While this place has more upscale (and pricey) menu offerings, this simple meal was only $16 and just enough for me. With iced tea, the total was $21, a fair price in today's market. The food and service were great. If I am in the area on a trip again, I will be sure to check out their offerings. read more

We made a reservation bc it was five people. The front desk lady said she will check on the table never came back. Finally someone came and sat us. At this time there was three people. She half ass put the menus down. Then we got three waters. Never got the other waters for the rest of the group. They ignored our table. They got our order and we waited an hour for the food to came. Mean while there was plants that were sitting for about two hours. (They ended up giving that plates to the table nexts to us). When we got our food it was cold and gross. This restaurant is conveniently located in the lobby of the Marriott, right next to the Mechanics Bank Arena. We had about an hour and a half to wait between events at the arena. It was raining outside and we didn't want to walk anywhere, so we decided to eat here. We were seated right away and ordered shortly after. And then the wait began. At first we were like it's cool, we have plenty of time. After 30 minutes we got nervous, and after 45 panic set in. We finally got our food after close to an hour wait. And for the record, it was not busy. In fact, we were one of the last people left in the restaurant at this point. The food was average. Like cafeteria quality. It was ok. I got Chilaquiles which comes with eggs. Our server had asked how I wanted my eggs. I said over hard, and specified please not runny. Well it was like pure liquid. I know some people love that. I'm not one of those people, which is why I asked specifically to make sure they were not runny. When it came time to pay, we presented our Yelp check-in offer. Our server went and got a manager. The manager looked at it and said what is this? I explained. She said "ya we don't do that. The only time you get a discount here is if you work for Marriott." Okie dokie then. This restaurant is a solid three star experience. Turkey club. I always ask, "Is the turkey carved fresh roast turkey or is it luncheon meat?" I absolutely abhor luncheon meat turkey. The waiter said it is definitely fresh carved turkey. I was excited. It was not. The turkey was that really wet off-white luncheon meat. The fries. I always request my fries extra crispy, and these were fantastic. They were fresh cooked, and salted to perfection. The fried calamari. I was surprised that the fried calamari actually seemed pretty fresh. It was not frozen Costco calamari that was reheated. The service was very friendly, although misinformed. The highlight of the meal was definitely the fries in the calamari. If I'd stop there this would have been a solid four-star review. read more

I really enjoyed my salad! I had the red zin as well, which was okay. The salad was such a large quantity, but I did spend some time sitting at the restaurant while working- so I picked at it quite a bit. The staff was also very attentive and helpful. And as I mentioned, I was working, and no one minded. It was pretty empty, but I'm not sure how many folks who are not staying at the hotel would go to the restaurant. We attended a Cheer competition for our daughter at the Mechanics Bank Arena and were hungry in between our club's performances. We were going to walk somewhere downtown but the weather was not in our favor so we ended up here. When you first enter the greeting area looks somewhat upscale leading you to believe that this was going to be a really good spot. There were only a few booths and mainly tables and chairs. The server seemed frustrated that we had not decided what we wanted to eat when she returned with our drinks. Being our first time we were taking our time going through the menu which was fairly small but none the less we were trying to make the best choice. They had a buffet option which we looked at and looked like less than what you would get from a Hilton hotel for free. I ended up choosing the Benedict. It took quite some time to get our food and did not get refills on our drinks while waiting. When the food finally arrived I was disappointed in the quality and flavor, to top it off they stated the coupon in Yelp was only for employees?!?!? I'm pretty sure Yelp is not randomly making coupons with out consulting with the businesses first. Don't think we will be coming back here anytime soon. read more

Usual Marriott lobby restaurant setting. My server was very nice and attentive. Unfortunately, my Parmesan chicken dish was extremely salty, and the chicken breast, although a nice portion, was quite tough. There was a lemon caper sauce the entire dish was resting on, which was way too lemony. So between the caper's salt and the lemon overload, it was not a pleasant dish. There was supposed to be arugula on the side, but those wilted green things were them! The rolls that were brought were little dense doughballs with no flavor. If I stay here at the Marriott again, I'll be ordering Doordash in. (One additional star for the server) read more

The Marriott has pictures of the ribeye dinner in the elevators and it's suppose to be the best thing on the menu. Well, it's not. I ordered a medium well ribeye and it arrived cool to the touch and half of it was rare and the other half raw. It must have been frozen when they put it on the grill. read more

I'm staying here at the Marriott in Bakersfield for my husbands work week. So I started the week off killing my healthy way of living with a chocolate mini Bundt cake Al a mode. This was a HORRIBLE store bought mini bundt cake with undesirable chocolate syrup. The mini scoop of ice cream was the only thing that was decent. Knowing being away from home I was going to eat like the average unhealthy person, I decided to "splurge" and what a complete waste of $20 The next day I ordered my son the Mac-n-cheese. I literally could have gone to the .99 cents store and got a box of it and thrown it in the microwave (that wasn't here in our room). The menu states that the Mac-n-cheese comes with 2 sides, so I ordered steak fries and the veggies. The only thing I got was the fries because they had no veggies available. Do yourselves a favor and drive around the area and buy your meals. You'll be happy you did!!! read more

I was so very super excited about having the opportunity to eat here, after going through many of the reviews and researching a great place to eat in Bakersfield ,this seemed like a very good option. The Host & Waitress were gracious kind and my water glass was never empty. I was absolutely starving and usually when I am at such a point everything tastes delicious. I asked the waitress for the largest plate available I didn't even ask the cost or look at the menu , she said it was chicken something and I said I'll have it. The plate was just okay, it was very salty and the chicken breast was super thin and The mashed potatoes tasted like they were from a Ready-Mix, I would give it a 4/10 I had very hi-hopes and was let down. (this was for dinner Service ) I also had the opportunity to have Breakfast Buffet here. The breakfast tasted like cafeteria food , bacon was over-cooked, the only good thing was the orange juice and Activia, the bagel warming machine was off kilter, the potatoes were cold, it was very disappointing. The first time we ate here, the service was incredibly slow, but we ordered Cioppino and it was really good. The broth was a good consistency and very flavorful. They were not stingy with the fish either! On our most recent visit, the service was better although it did take some time to get our food. We ordered the artichoke dip and I loved it. So did everyone else at the table because the bowl it came in got scraped clean! I got the Skirt Steak beef dip and found it delectable. It had a good strong garlic flavor and was very expertly complimented by grilled portabello mushrooms and swiss cheese. I also really appreciated the toasted ciabatta bread on this sandwich because it was able to be dipped in the au jus without falling apart. I enjoyed the mild seasoning on the fries as well. Besides the bread which was delicious and the service which was attentive, I have to say The Nines is more like The Twos, on a scale of one to ten. My husband and I split a Caesar salad and the lettuce was browning. It was not tossed but had a layer of dressing on the top. The croutons were standard box croutons and I think we got the bottom of the bag since they were crushed and pretty hard. For a fine-dining restaurant you'd think a salad with be a little fresher and tossed together. My husband and I both ordered steaks. I had a sirloin and he a NY strip. We both ordered medium and it came to the table bleeding rare and cold. The waiter was apologetic and sent it back to be refired. At nearly $30 and above for steaks we found this to be unacceptable. If you're going to charge that much money for a steak, I certainly hope the cooks know how to cook one properly to the desired internal temp. When they came back they were cooked as ordered but our sautéed zucchini and green beans had gone cold. My scalloped potatoes were semi soft and semi hard and had an obscene amount of cheese both in the dish and on top of it, cold. It was not a good scalloped potato. My husband opted for a mashed potato which was basic but cold when it came back the second time. The kids menu says "cheesy Mac". We were expecting to get a house made mac n cheese but it was regular old boxed crappy Kraft. I don't even feed my child Kraft at home so I was sorely disappointed paying $10 for a 99 cent box of cheap Kraft. Gross. At least her french fries were tasty. I was not expecting mind blowing food from a Marriot in Bakersfield of all places but at the prices they are charging, our nearly $100 dinner was mediocre at best. We would stay at the hotel again but will not eat The Nines again. read more

I really liked this place. We went on a tuesday evening, and it was like we had the place to ourselves! Great service! And the food isn't as rediculously priced as I expected. Tuesday is prime rib night, but we didnt get that. Let me just tell you that the beef dip sandwich with mushrooms (sorry cant remember the actual name, but its the only dip sandwich on the menu) is mouth watering amazing! Get it, get it, get it!!! yum :) I had a linguine pasta dish that had bacon and sweet peas in it. So I went to the nines on 2 different occasions- the first time I went I would maybe have given it 3.5 stars, the second time probably 0 stars. Let me explain. First night at the hotel we had reserved a large room for about 15 of us. The servers did an amazing job! They were so friendly and they got all the orders out quickly and everything was piping hot. Drinks were delicious and everything was going well. I ordered the crab ravioli with a lobster bisque sauce. This sounded AMAZING! I was so excited to try...when it came out it looked delicious, but when I bit into the ravioli it was pretty much just ricotta cheese...I did not taste one bit of crab in the entire dish. I did enjoy the sauce (no lobster in it though) and that was the saving grace for the meal, it was more like cheese ravioli in a pink seafoodish sauce. The next time I was there I ordered the duck confit with steamed buns and their pear salad. The salad...oh boy micro greens with a couple unripe pear slices with candied macadamia nuts and maybe a teaspoon of dressing...it was awful. Not exaggerating when I say the duck was literally the worst dish I have ever tasted in my 28 years. I don't think it was duck...I don't know what meat it was...the buns were rock hard is some places and moist in others. Whatever cabbage mixture was under the "duck" had a sour cherry taste to it. I took one bite and could not continue. SO BAD. Overall I would not suggest this place- or maybe just DONT ORDER THE FOOD I DID! read more

Located in the Marriott Hotel in downtown Bakersfield, this restaurant is a hidden gem. After a month and a half of jury duty and being tired of eating at your typical downtown lunch locations, I stumbled on this place. From the moment you walk in the host/hostess greets you and promptly sits you and the waiter/waitress takes your order, you feel welcomed. Like their service, the food is excellent. I highly recommend their French dip sandwich for lunch.....the sandwich is full of meat, mushrooms and swiss cheese, needless to say - it's mouthwatering. We went here last Wednesday evening for dinner and to have a meeting. Our experience was really a mixed bag, some great, some definitely sub-par. First off, the service- I can't say enough about it. Everyone that we interacted with was both professional and friendly. Our server was incredibly patient with the fact that we had 4 people arriving all at different times, with different items being ordered throughout the evening. She was very knowledgeable about the menu, and the service was prompt. We never ran out of anything. Five stars for service, no doubt. The food was a bit of an issue for us. I, along with one of my guests, ordered the cauliflower steak. It was a half head of cauliflower which had been roasted (I believe) but had not been seasoned in any way. It was served with brown rice and a salad, which seemed to be dressed with straight lemon juice. I requested some balsamic vinegar, just to give it some kind of taste, and our (again, incredibly helpful) server rerurned with both straight balsamic vinegar as well as a vinaigrette. I completed my meal, but the other person gave her food away and ordered another appetizer. I appreciate the presence of a vegetarian entree, but it was very disappointing. I have eaten at this restaurant for years and have always been very impressed at the care that is put into the food. It was disappointing that the same care was not put into the one vegetarian option. On another note, our other two guests ordered the sausage rigatoni and the chicken pot pie, and they both thoroughly enjoyed their meals. read more

Once again, we went to the Nine's for a special meal, and it was excellent. The French Fries were the best in town, crispy and enough to please our tastes. My husband had the beef Rib and enjoyed it immensely and I had the sirloin steak, which was very tender. There was enough for me to doggy bag, which I love to do. Our server, Ishmael, is a wonderful employee and very friendly, in a professional way. I would go back to the Nines, just to be served by him. He was attentive, but not over bearing as some do when hovering over me. I recommend this for a wonderful evening out, and don't let the lack of a crowd fool you. I've been surprised by this place. It may be one of the nicer restaurants in town. I'm not kidding, either. They have a nice ambience that is good for both lunch and dinner. Also, if you're feeling like you don't want to dress up nicely, you can eat in the lobby and order their same menu, but in a much more casual setting. They have lunch specials for about $10 per dish. They have a full bar. Also, each meal that I've had here has been very tasty and satisfying. I've eaten here at least a half-dozen times. On a few occasions inside The Nines and on a few more in the lobby/bar area. They have televisions in the lobby/bar area and they are some nice hi-def ones. There is a small room inside the Nines with chandeliers-- it's really pretty & perfect for a small event. I've held 2 small functions in the "chandelier room" & the service has been delightful! I had a birthday dinner & a baby shower for friends (the room only fits 13 max, I believe), but if you have a small event & want a beautiful place with great service, call the Marriott to set it up! I was able to bring a few decorations & desserts to add to my parties & they helped me arrange the room the way I needed. Wanting to try a new holiday brunch spot, my mom and I came here for Mother's Day brunch buffet. Upon arrival we were quickly greeted by the hostess and a gentleman who I believe was the manager. The gentleman explained the layout of the buffet and told us about the included unlimited champagne. We were walked to our table and we wasted no time in heading over to the buffet! Their buffet spread spanned the entirety of the bar section on the opposite side of the hotel and they had the omelette and dessert station in the middle of the lobby. Kind of awkward placing, but I see where they were limited in space for those two stations. The hot dishes were nothing to rave about, all pretty basic dishes that I found myself adding lots of salt and pepper to. The charcuterie station is always one of my favorites at brunch buffets but I was sadly disappointed by this one. The Brie did not taste fresh and the crackers were stale. My mom did seem to thoroughly enjoy the seafood station and raved about their ceviche. Their dessert station was also very yummy! They had a variety of petit fours and LARGE slices of cake. The employees were all very attentive and kind but overall, I do not feel like the quality of the food justifies a $35/person price tag. There's other nearby brunch buffets that are lower in price and offer much more variety and quality. Next time we'll just stick with our trusted brunch spots. read more

While working down the street for a few days, my colleagues and I had lunch here. The service was very good, and the food wasn't too bad either. The turkey club was well put together with just enough crisp on the toasted bread. The sweet potato fries were not as crisp as I prefer, but the taste was good. The money shot was the mac and cheese.
