Behold the Monkey King! A good time to be had here. It's absolutely in a league of its own and I am hard pressed to recall a restaurant where I've had access to both Bangali and Chinese influences under one roof. I also deeply appreciate that the owners are offering guests a glimpse into their cultural cuisines and I love the backstory of how this business came into being. Dietary restrictions are noted on the menu and servers are informed about the menu (shocking how I sometimes get a blank stare when I ask if a dish is vegan at some restaurants) and careful as is the kitchen. Our table did a lot of sharing, although if I'm being honest, no one was getting their hands on my tri-colored veggie dumplings. These are delicate pockets of tender mushrooms, tofu and cabbage, bursting with umami. Yeah, nope. Keep your chopsticks off my dumplings! A pile of salty greens seasoned with just enough garlic and cooking wine rounded out the delicious vegan fried rice (they will leave the egg out of it), which is very veggie-forward with asparagus, shiitake, red pepper and green onions. It gives decadence but is actually healthy, too. A note on the wines: the lambrusco is perhaps a tad on the sweet side, but our server made a suggestion for my second glass: Hild Elbling Sekt Brut, which is crisp/dry and perfect. Atmosphere is sleek and sexy. One might feel you are in someone's swanky den. I love that they play good music and that it's intimate enough for a date but also agreeable to groups of friends. So glad I got to give this place a try! I showed up around 6pm on a Saturday with no reservations but luckily someone cancelled right as the host was telling me there were no more tables lol. Please learn from my mistakes and grab a resy if you're heading here for dinner! Once seated I was greeted by my fabulous server Ava who shared that The Monkey King serves Asian-fusion food that is designed to be shared. She recommended ordering about 2-3 small plates and then a main dish to share. At the recommendation of the bartender I ended up ordering the sichuan mushrooms, the char siu pork, the beef chow fun, and then one of the specials- The Peking duck. The mushrooms and char siu pork ended up coming out first and both were great. The mushrooms were lightly battered and fried and had a lovely kick to them. The pork was well seasoned and cooked and came with some beautifully pickled veggies on the side. Next came the beef chow fun which was the highlight of the meal for me. The noodle dish was FULL of flavor and it took everything in me to keep eating it despite how full I was honestly starting to get ha. Lastly we were able to try the Peking duck which came with a side of cucumbers, green onions, orange hoisin sauce, and bao buns to make mini duck baos. The sides: Roasted Asparagus & Red Pepper Fried Rice Wok fried string beans Our party of three was pretty full after devouring the first half above. By the time the larger dishes came out we were game to try them, but mostly full. The chef specials: Cumin lamb ribs - this was a new flavor for me. Maybe better for someone who is more of a meat eater than me. But being that it was their most popular dish, we really wanted to try it. It was a little difficult to eat, you kind of just had to pick up the shank and not be shy. Maybe lollipop style would be easier to handle. Crispy garlic fried chicken had a nice fry to it. It was tasty but compared to the starters didn't stand out as much. The service was great. Their very sweet co-owners came around and said hello and asked us about the food. The layout here is definitely different. My personal opinion the bar had more space than the dining area. It was cute bt overwhelming for an entry, dining was located past the bar and didn't have that much seating. Our server was very friendly and nice. He did an excellent job starting us off with drinks , small bites and eventually our entre. Shrimp toast was very good ! Sauce was a banger as well. I've had monkey king on my list for a while and it really lived up to the hype. The ambiance is super chic and cozy, perfect for a date night or intimate hang with your girls. There's plenty of seating available at the bar if you can't get a table reservation, but definitely recommend making a resy ahead of time if you can. Service was fast & friendly, our waitress checked in on us pretty often & came by to refill our waters more than once. The food is mostly served family style and came out at a great pace to keep us satisfied. My fav dishes were definitely the garlic eggplant and the tofu string beans. My friends also really enjoyed the fried chicken dumplings & scallion pancakes. I know there was a lot of hype about the fried shrimp toast but in my opinion it was overly greasy & not something I would order again. I'll admit I'm not a lamb person but the pieces were really fatty and chewy which made it hard to eat. Also I know the name says cumin lamb ribs but there was too much in cumin personally. The chicken was ok, nothing bad about it but compared to the sides I could've done without. Overall, I was happy to try out this location. Omg, the food was so good I actually ordered takeout the next day after I dined in! I'm glad I don't have to go all the way to the city or to Flushing to satisfy my soup dumpling cravings. I visited The Monkey King last night with my boyfriend. We had a 10:15 PM reservation but weren't seated until about 10:35 -- not a great start. The place itself felt more like a loud hole-in-the-wall than what I was expecting. The food overall was just okay -- very mid -- but I will say the char siu and bao buns were definitely the highlight. The drink menu was super limited. My boyfriend tried to order a D'USSÉ and cranberry, and somehow the bar didn't even have cranberry juice... seriously? On top of that, the prices felt way too high for what we got. Our server also didn't give us a last call for the kitchen. We tried to order another entrée, only to be told the kitchen was already closed. Overall, I wouldn't return. read more

This place is Amazing !! The story behind the monkey king hits home to many immigrant children. Munzy and Harvey were amazing hosts and hearing their journey of two immigrant kids leaving their corporate jobs to pursue their culinary passions is inspiring. The food was a beautiful fusion of Asian cuisines. The restaurant also uses products that are locally sourced supporting local businesses in the community! We started with the scallion pancakes, chicken dumplings, shrimp toast and mouth watering chicken. All the appetizers were all so tasty and flavorful we knew we were in for a treat for the rest of dinner! The cumin lamb ribs were my personal favorite. Seasoned to perfection, my mouth still waters when I think about it. The crispy garlic chicken was also a another fav, which is surprising considering chicken isn't my usual go to but I'm so glad I tried it! The skin was nice and crispy while the meat was very juicy and flavorful ! Wish I took more pictures but we also had the string beans with beef, eggplant , typhoon shrimp and duck fried rice. The bar is sunken into the floor and creates a really cool aesthetic in the restaurant. We tried the Málàgarita Margarita which had the perfect amount of flavor and spice from the sichuan peppercorns. We also ordered a non-alcoholic mock tail called the sichuan pineapple highball and it was so refreshing and delicious. When it was time to be seated for dinner, the bar effortlessly transferred our drinks over and brought them to the table for us. I really loved the cleanliness of this restaurant. After someone leaves the dining booth, the staff vacuums it with a hand vacuum. This was such a nice touch and I've never seen this done any where else before! For dinner we ordered the Char Siu (bbq pork with pickled veggies), fried shrimp toast, pan fried dumplings, crab cake shumai, shrimp har how dumplings, fried sichuan oyster mushrooms, crispy garlic fried chicken, double garlic eggplant, seasonal market greens, roasted duck fat fried rice, crab fried rice, jasmine rice and beef chow fun. Everything was more delicious than the next. Each dish was full of flavor and really brought the Bengali-Chinese fusion to life. As a Cantonese dish super fan, the Char Siu was definitely one of my favorite dishes and I really LOVED the egg plant. Probably a 4.5/5. The area feels like the middle of nowhere, so this is truly a hidden gem. Outside the restaurant doesn't look like much, but inside it is like a morph between an underground speakeasy and a modern fine restaurant. The shrimp toast was the highlight of the meal. The instant you bite into it, you get a hit of the unique umami shrimp flavour and texture on top, and crispy buttered toast on bottom. I think I felt a little butter squirt in the toast, it was that juicy. There are spices to elevate the shrimp flavors and a coconut curry dipping sauce. The dipping sauce added a sweet and refreshing element to the dish to balance the richness of the buttered toast and shrimp. In hindsight, this dish was a tad on the too greasy side, it would have been nice to have more refreshing elements to balance the heaviness. The char siu pork had delicious flavor (with a honey glaze as well) and a good balance between fat and lean whilst still being tender. The ginger-scallion sauce was very watered down, it would have been nice if the sauce had stronger ginger taste to dip into, and give the dish more flavor depth. The duck fat fried rice was good. Would have liked a bit more duck flavor to enhance its deliciousness further. The double garlic eggplant really packs a punch and was very tasty, the eggplant was cooked wonderfully. read more

My immediate first reaction was impressed by the trendy interior decor. They definitely put a lot of effort into ambiance here and it shows. We ordered 5 dishes for the table to share, which ended up being plenty of food. The highlight for me was the wok fried string beans - absolutely delicious! Great experience! My daughter took me to The Monkey King to celebrate my milestone 50th birthday. Service was great. Staff were attentive and pleasant. Food was well prepared, tasted great and beautifully presented. Next the food it was just okay.. the serving was Terrible (very small) esp. for the prices ! I will not recommend. The service was 3.5 stars.
