First of all went here on a whim on a random Tuesday night. Staff was pleasant and super helpfully giving guidance on the menu. We got the char siu and shrimp toast to start. Both really good the char siu came with this ginger sauce that was savory. Shrimp toast was a little on the greasy side but I liked the flavor. The dipping sauce for the shrimp toast was next level though! Coconut curry that we saved for the rest of the meal. Mains we got the lamb cumin ribs that were fall off the bone! Seasoned so well! The double garlic eggplant was also super delicious. However, the star of the meal was the crispy garlic fried chicken.....this dish was outrageous. It was prepared how duck would be prepared. I wanted to like this place. I had been wanting to go here for a while. So we made a reservation a week in advance for our date night. When we showed up for our reservation, we were told they would only be able to seat us at the bar. That was frustrating because we had made a reservation to eat in a more intimate setting. The bartender we had was very friendly. We came here specifically because I wanted to have soup dumplings. However, we were told that we they only had 1 order of pork soup dumplings left (our reservation was at 8pm on a Friday). We would have ordered two servings if they had more. Our drinks were just okay - neither of us would order them again. We ordered a couple apps and entrees. One of our apps was halfway done and they asked if we wanted them to box it up for us to take home - we said yes. They never brought the box to us so as we were wrapping up, I asked if they had it and someone assured us it was waiting in the back and would be in our bag when we left. So we boxed up our other leftovers, paid and left. When we got home, the app wasn't in our bag as they assured us it would be. Just disappointing because it was the thing we liked the most. Very welcoming and warm as soon as we walked in, we were seated at the bar. Our party was unforgivably late and most places will not seat you until your full party arrive, we were promptly seated. Not only were we seated at the bar but the staff was extremely courteous about the late arrival. They informed us they would have to give away our table and they also informed us how to find another reservation quickly online to meet our late arrivals schedule (that's a first for me). Customer service is peak. It was my birthday (almost, kinda) and the drinks kept flowing. I loved it! This is family style eating, so if you and your party each order one entree, you will receive enough food for the whole table, and it will arrive in rounds. My daughter decided on the Monkey King for her birthday, I was skeptical at first. When we arrived, it's sort of an odd setup. The bar is soon as you walk in and it appears larger than the eating area in the back, which is set up nicely with booths and tables. Our waitress was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. She explained what the dishes were to us. She was funny at times. We had several dishes: Cumin Lamb was really good, a lil spicy, not enough meat on the bones . BBQ Ribs I'm told were really good, I would prefer them to be cooked a little bit more. Shrimp Toast was wasn't bad, I didn't like the sauce that came with it. Crispy Garlic Chicken was delicious and the white meat wasn't dry. The sauce was really good also Duck Fat Fried Rice was delicious. I love the String beans I didn't care for any of the dumplings, I'm not a dumpling kind of Gal . We ate family style and there was nothing left to take home. I think they need to have more than one dessert on the menu, everybody doesn't like strawberry. The cake was hard to cut into but it had a good taste . I originally had a reservation for Sunday night, but they texted me a couple days before saying that they had to cancel because they had a last-minute buyout. Thankfully, it's not hard to get a reservation here! The layout of the restaurant is very interesting. You have to walk through an empty outdoor room, and when you step inside, you see a very cool sunken bar. They had so many interesting cocktails on the menu - I wish I would have gotten one! For the food, we ordered char siu, fried shrimp toast, cumin lamb ribs, double garlic eggplant, and the beef chow fun. This was way too much food for two people - the portions were huge! The char siu was good and came with an interesting sauce. Same with the shrimp toast - I wouldn't have thought to pair it with a coconut curry sauce. I'm taking a star off for a couple of reasons. None of the dishes come with rice, so we ordered a side of jasmine rice, which cost $6. Also, our waitress only offered us still or sparkling water after we sat down. I should've asked for tap, but I just answered still without thinking. I didn't realize we actually ordered a $8 water! I understand this is an upscale Chinese restaurant, but paying that much for rice and water just hurts the asian in me a little bit. Finally made my way here after having this place in my bookmarks for a few weeks! This establishment is pretty new, so when we walked in, the restaurant was just gorgeous, forest green velvet seating along the walls, and just overall gorgeous ambiance with the center focus being the bar. We met our waitress Hannah, she was just incredible, had all the best recommendations and accommodated our toddler (and even professed love by the end of the night lol!). The crispy garlic fried chicken was different but tasty. I had the general tso shrimp and crab fried rice. Both were good. The chicken and rice were pretty big portions in which we were able share and to take some home. It was a bit chilly in there so didn't make it very comfortable. Granted it was a cold night but later on into dinner the place was much warmer. It was definitely a date night spot. I loved the bar set up and seating around it so you have the option to eat there as well. It is a small place. My only setback as my friend has been here before was we felt rushed to leave. The owner offered to box up our food and we weren't ready yet and he made mention about 90min seating and the next party coming in 15min. I am so thankful to have met Munzzy and Harvey, two native New Yorkers who bring their Bangladeshi and Chinese cultural heritages to the food and drinks they serve here. One bite of the shrimp toast or sip of the "deep fake lassi" cocktail will tell you how much love they've put into this restaurant, which has become one of my favorite spots in Brooklyn. The space itself is stunning, with a wrap around bar at the center that is sunken so that their servers and bartenders are at eye level with anyone seated at the bar. Velvet, green plush seating lines the walls of the wood paneled dining space, which is equal parts classy and sexy. This place is perfect for a date or intimate celebration. The playlist featured a mix of throwback and modern r&b and hip hop tunes when I last visited, which is my favorite genre. Now, about the food-- DELICIOUS. I especially love the fried shrimp toast, pan fried chicken dumplings (which are actually deliciously soupy), the tri-colored vegetable dumplings, double garlic eggplant, crispy garlic chicken, and wok fried string beans. A true asian fusion restaurant in the middle of Bushwick. Reservations weren't hard to come by on a Wednesday night (made a res a hour-ish before arriving). Got promptly seated for my 6:30pm res and the service was attentive and friendly throughout the night by everyone I encountered. My boyfriend ordered the Baiju cocktail that he really enjoyed (there is no way to mask the taste of Baiju so if you don't like the taste I would not order this) and I stuck with water. For apps, we ordered the Char Siu (2/5- Not a fan. This tasted like regular pork belly that had the outside coloring of Char Siu but tasted nothing like it) and the Fried Shrimp Toast (4/5- Super salty but even with the saltiness, this was so good and can see why everyone is raving about it. There was a generous amount of juicy shrimp and the coconut curry sauce was a great dip to go with the toast). For entrees, we ordered the Cumin Lamb Ribs (4/5- Lamb was cooked well and the hot honey was genius). The Crab Fried Rice (5/5- Favorite dish of the night. While the interior design is undeniably beautiful, the several issues related to service and food quality significantly detracted from what should have been an amazing dining experience. The menu is digital/on your phone. We ordered a couple of small plates to start, but then the waiter immediately jumps in suggesting a vegetable dish. It felt totally condescending, like we (two young people who eat out all the time) needed a lesson on ordering, and wouldn't think to order a veggie? Regardless we were just getting starters since the portions are smaller, we ordered just two items for apps, then were going to order main dishes later. We didn't want the veggie, and having to tell them to take it off the order was just an awkward start. The vibe got even worse later. We sent back one of the dishes because it looked nothing like the picture on the phone, it was dry, weird, and had a bizarre ginger-bready/boiled-egg texture. After we complained, the whole staff started visibly giving our table the side-eye and whispering. It made us super uncomfortable and self-conscious, like we were being judged for expecting $200+ food to actually be good. To top it all off, we got the check, and there was a non-optional, automatic gratuity charge added. Throw in a stellar cocktail menu that surpasses many of the artisanal speakeasy spots in Manhattan, and they're on their way to something great. - Char Siu: As authentic as the bare bones Hong Kong BBQ spots I grew up with, right down to the ginger-scallion dipping sauce that makes me want to cry tears of glory (and I hate scallions). - Fried Shrimp Toast: Okay, I might actually have teared up eating this. Do you know how hard it is to find shrimp toast? You almost never see it on Chinese/Asian menus, and when it's there, it usually sucks. Not so here. Get this. Drench yourself in the sauce. The peach immortal is a must - but be warned, it's in a VERY small glass. Not the best for my fellow peeps who like more than one drink! Our server was a bit spacey at times but had good conversation. For apps, the shrimp dumplings were tasty! Entrees though are a hit or slight miss - we had the duck fat fried rice (I expected more flavor), the lobster lo mein special (not enough lo mein), and the string beans (more food in comparison to other dishes). What a treat! Upon walking in I was greeted by Chase who had an amazing spirit and smile. I was also in awe of the sunken bar which was absolutely unexpected and gorgeous. The monkey king is located pretty far out from downtown Brooklyn and all the busy areas but the location is very new and clean. The atmosphere is very jazzy and moody. I'm not sure if the menu changes frequently, but the menu leaned heavily into Chinese American cuisine. Nevertheless, I found it to be one of the best Chinese restaurants outside of a neighborhood with a high density of Chinese restaurants (e.g. Flushing, Chinatown, Borough Park / Bensonhurst / Bath Beach). To go into the restaurant, you walk through an enclosed patio area which emulates a speakeasy entrance. Inside, I was immediately impressed with the sleek look. There's a sunken bar creating an interesting foreground. It has more of a downtown cocktail bar feel. The back settles into more of a listening lounge vibe though conversations do reverberate loudly. Seating is noticeably clean and comfortable. Seemed like the staff vacuumed each seat in between patrons. The crowd is surprisingly eclectic. Young twenty somethings with tattoos that you'd expect in Bushwick but there was also a couple in their 60s on what appeared to be a date night. Drink menu was a bit rigid. They didn't accommodate my wife's drink request, but she enjoyed their house cocktail. I had the Malagarita. It was a margarita with a pepper infused tequila. It had a noticeable spiciness which I enjoyed; it certainly set the tone for the appetizers. We started with the fried mushrooms with Sichuan peppers and green onions. This was our favorite dish. I'd highly recommend it. Crunchy salt and pepper style breading. The exterior had a perfect crisp to it. The interior was soft and juicy easily rivaling the best of salt and pepper chicken. The red Sichuan peppers are distinct, so you can push them aside if you'd prefer to keep the dish mild. If you like some spiciness, then dig deep and load up your utensils with these nasal clearing peppers. Along with the mushrooms, we had the Char Sui. It was a more sophisticated version of the typical BBQ spare ribs you'd get from takeout spots. They had a beautiful smoke ring to them. The outer pieces were outstanding though some of the inner pieces had so tough fatty parts. A very nostalgic dish. A slight twist was the it came with a ginger scallion sauce which added a ton of brightness to the flavor profile. For the main course, we shared the sautéed garlic eggplant and the duck fat fried rice. The eggplant had a sweet Cantonese style sauce that was awfully addicting. Definitely make sure to pair it with some rice. Fried rice was good too and had an interesting savoriness coming from the duck fat. We finished with the sticky toffee date cake. It's nicely presented with some flowers on top. The waiter advised not to eat them though the online menu advertises edible florals. The cakes are layered with a thick heaping of buttercream frosting. We loved the cakes but the frosting sunk us into a deep dessert coma. Service was attentive throughout. Water glasses were continually refilled and the staff made sure to check on us after each item. There was one gender neutral restroom which was spacious and handicap accessible. Regarding my previous review and the hostile response. Please don't dismiss my experience. We never asked for anything complimentary, we simply expected to be treated with basic politeness and respect as paying customers. People go to restaurants to enjoy great service, good food, and a welcoming atmosphere, not to be "educated." I never claimed my party didn't want to understand. I said they don't not work in the industry, so they wouldn't necessarily know about a pass, nor should they be expected to. Having worked in hospitality myself, I have never encountered or received such unprofessional and confrontational service. That's exactly why I left this review because the experience was rude, aggressive, and completely inappropriate. We were mistreated and undervalued, and it was obvious. A lack of accountability, empathy, and basic courtesy does not create a memorable dining experience, in fact, it does the opposite. At no point was my guest hostile when we were told not to take pictures. Additionally, my Resy confirmation email clearly stated a two-hour dining limit for parties of four or more. When I showed this to the owner, she acknowledged the mistake and apologized. This was supposed to be a special occasion, my best friend's birthday. Yet the cake was brought out when half our party was in the bathroom. Your response only reinforces the poor customer service and defensiveness we experienced that night. The same host who initially welcomed us later brought our coats to the table and essentially forced us to leave, with no offer to accommodate us at the bar. To add insult to injury, a 20% gratuity was automatically added to our check despite everything that transpired. This is unacceptable. read more

My friends and I came on a Friday night without reservations, we were able to get a seat, which was great! This place does get packed around 8PM, so try to make reservations if you can. The menu was pretty interesting, the owner actually went around to each table and introduced herself and gave us the background story of the restaurant. It's owned by a husband and wife, they combined their own cultural food into this fusion restaurant. I was really surprised by how delicious the food was! The string beans and beef was excellent! Perfectly cooked and seasoned. We also ended up getting the gluten free chow fun noodles, duck fried rice, and the fried chicken. Everything was delicious! Walked in after work ask the lady at the front podium if I can sit at the bar, which had about seven empty seats she claims all seats in the restaurant have been reserved, including at the bar I then explained I really wanted to place an order to go and was hoping to sit at the bar and have a drink while I wait she then tells me I can place my order with her and have a seat at the bar next to the front door. After about 10 minutes of not being acknowledged at all by anyone behind the bar podium lady which I found out is supposed to be one of the owners of the walked near me so I asked if I can place my drink order with her as well, which she did take roughly 20 minutes after sitting down, I got my drink which came with a straw that was shorter than the cup itself. After getting a decent size straw and watching people come and go, the bar empty out, and those seats in the bar never got filled in the hour that I waited for my food which about $100 total Mind you I'm sitting by the front door. The winter wind hitting my back every time people open the door. Podium lady tells me my food should be out any minute. I then told her she should give me a complementary drink for my long wait she then walked away from me like she did not hear me which I know she did. My food finally came out 20 min after she told me it was coming. I hand checked the temperatures of the containers, which were lukewarm, which tells me my food likely was sitting for sometime. My end thought was her attempt to show inclusivity overshadowed what she could have done to make my experience more pleasant like move my seat or give me a complementary drink or a fortune cookie anything instead I got lukewarm food, a cold neck and a thank you.
