This spot catches your attention. The lights are something else and it was a one of a kind dining experience. I went with a group and we ordered family style and loved our time here. A very interesting restaurant. Obviously the decor is the first thing to catch your eye and definitely adds to the unique experience! First thing to note, there are 2 surrounding restaurants that have the exact same decor and have workers outside of the restaurant trying to lead you into their restaurants, rather than letting you enter Milon. Odd, but again adds to the unique experience. Would not recommend this place for big groups, if you don't want a long wait. You can try to make reservations but it doesnt mean much since they take all reservations, they look for your whole group to arove and then from there they seat on a first come first serve basis. For our group of 7 we waited about an hour outside on the stairs to be seats. BUT, I will say they were making a strong effort to seat us and even allowed us to merge 2 tables to finally be seated inside. Once you get inside its a tiny spot covered with fun and beautiful lights! I would not recommended this place for the food. We had a fixed menu since it was a large group, food was flavorful but nothing to rave about. But we really enjoyed the overall dining experience and hospitality. Overall, I liked my experience here, but with the quality of food and wait time it would not be a go to spot. This rating and review is based purely on their customer service as I didn't not even get a chance to eat any food. 0 stars would be a more appropriate rating for this restaurant based on their customer service alone. We sat down as a party of 7 on a Friday night around 6pm. There was nobody else in the restaurant. After about 30 minutes of no waiter taking any order or drinks, the waiter comes out and starts telling us that parties of 6 or more are required to order from their pre-fixe menu. We are not sure of what that consisted of as they didn't have a written pre-fixe menu to provide us. The waiter just started randomly shouting food items, expecting us to be able to absorb what he was saying. When we asked why we were not told about this rule when we walked in, he told us it's not the door man's job to tell us. When asked why we were allowed to sit nearly 30 minutes without any service until he said something, he simply waved us off. When one of us asked what if we don't like the options provided or have dietary restrictions he replied with a "that's too bad." When two members of the party started to discuss our options, he leans over the table to them and started waving his hand in between them yelling "HELLO HELLO LISTEN TO ME NOW." That was when I decided we were leaving. When I got up he physically tried to stop me by grabbing my arm. Regardless of whether or not it's in the middle of a pandemic, it is absolutely NOT APPROPRIATE to put hands on a customer. When we were putting our jackets on he started to offer us menus and tell us it's okay to order regular food after telling us repeatedly it was required to order the pre-fixe multiple times. There's a reason why Milon/Panna II draw a really big crowd in front of them and beckon tons of people to stop, look and question what the hell is going on. It goes without saying, it's all those damn lights. In order to keep those lights on, the restaurants have a high turnover, but offer pretty good food. We made reservations for I think Panna but they were honored at Milon, so I'm not sure how that works... We had a fairly large group of about 15 people and tons, I'm talking more than a case of wine, since it is BYOB. The restaurant suggested to us to order a pre-fixe kind of deal, so I can't remember all the dishes, the wine doesn't help the memory either. But I thoroughly enjoyed everything. read more

The lights are extremely cute, but the space is incredibly tight. Also, I came with a large group, and the service was unfortunately pretty disorganized. For example, my friend got water served to him in a red solo cup! We weren't served enough food as a group, and we ended up only having 2 samosas but everyone got charged just a few cents shy of $50 cash per person. The samosas were alright, but two samosas don't exactly equate to $50 to me, especially when it's a BYOB restaurant meaning that I didn't even purchase any drinks on top of that! The ceiling is covered in tons of xmas lights, streamers and tons more kitschy decor. My husband and I came here one Saturday afternoon. My husband bought us a lovely, crafty Belgium beer at the market next door. We then ordered the prix fixe option dinner options. It's such a great deal and I can never eat it all. Colorful claustrophobia. That's what I think of when I think of Milon, which I keep pronouncing Milan because I'm uncultured like that. The backdrop is as Instagrammable as it gets (it was in an episode of Daredevil, for all you Marvel fans). Sadly, the food is not quite as bombastic. We got the Vegetable Biryani (a little bland), Fish Curry (also a little bland), and Mushroom Saag Curry (not bad, but too oily). But then, you're not really here for the standard Indian fare. No need to worry about bottle openers or corkscrews because the waiters will open them for you. Also, if your drinks aren't cold enough, you can ask the waiter to keep them in their refrigerator. Atmosphere- super cool decor. There are tens of thousands of Christmas lights that kind of gives the spot a cozy feel in a way. Beware though, this place is tiny. Tiny may be an understatement actually, a couple parties of 6+ and this place will be packed to capacity. Of course small location means tons of noise- I was taken here on a date and could barely hear him . The music is the background was nice. A tip- cash only guys. From the hosts outside trying to compete with all of the other Indian restaurants crowded onto this street to get you in the door to being BYOB to the crazy colorful array of lights inside, this place just has a unique character and is a fun experience. This review is purely an anger rant. I started ro eat here 20+ years ago. And while I was never a regular, I loved going and would constantly take friends and family. 15 years ago i moved away, but would still visit if I was in town (about once a year). So yesterday I arrive late in NYC, and dont make it there till 3pm. It will be my only chance to visit it, but Im not that hungry so I order the coconut soup (intending to leave a great tip) which Ive never seen anywhere else. The lights were really cute but because the customer service and experience was terrible that it ruined it. Our waiter was really passive aggressive and rude. The lunch special comes with a vegetable samosa, vegetable soup, the entree with rice and mango ice cream. So much food. The soup came first. Tomato based broth, very flavorful. Then the samosa. Flaky crust. Spiced potato filling. They provided the onions, coriander chutney and tamarind sauce. The shrimp curry had a good amount of spice but wasn't hot. The shrimp were tender. The basmati rice was fluffy. There was also dal and cabbage. I couldn't eat all the food. I asked for the rest to go. They packed up the rice and the curry separately. They then served a dish of mango ice cream. Sweet and creamy. They provided the bill without my asking but that was fine. I left after paying. Hah! This place is everything everyone else has said. It's a ton of fun, not the place you'd go for just the food, but worth it for the atmosphere. Couple of things to note - they are BYOB, cash only and VERY CROWDED. They are also quite affordable. We had a great meal for 10 people for about $300, including tax and tip. FOOD: The entire table opted for a group meal. For $25/person, you get appetizers, naan, a selection of entrees and dessert. The appetizers were a selection of three fritters - one samosa, one banana fritter and one vegetable fritter. It was very fresh and delicious! The entrees included tandoor chicken, saag paneer and several curries (lamb, beef and lentil). All were very good! The lamb was especially delicious. Dessert was a small scoop of ice cream. There was plenty of food and we had plenty for leftovers. SERVICE: I'll reiterate - the place is CRAMPED. And if I can down an entire chicken curry and 3/4 of a saag paneer order with rice and naan by myself?.. pshh.. Tiny mediocre entrees + hungry gut = I'm paying $25 for dinner, and not coming home with leftovers. Too expensive for what you get. It's BYOB and there's no corking fee. Service is alright, but they tend to get busy and you might get forgotten for a while. When you get to the building its the upstairs place on the left - don't be fooled by all the hagglers trying to get to you go to their restaurants. Being that it's upstairs, this is not the place to bring any sort of date that needs an accessible entrance. Surprisingly you can cram a pretty big group of maybe 10-12 people along the side. I've been overdue for writing a review for this place! Came here about 2 weeks ago with some gal pals for some fun, cheap, tasty Indian food - complete with BYOB, sans cork fee! Huzzah! You don't make reservations for this place, but on a Friday night you come early before the 8pm crowd of hungry folks begin to line up to get a seat. You also don't come here solely for the food - you come here for the *experience*. Milon's food is okaaaaaaaaaay, certainly not the mecca of chicken tikka or of spicy foods in general. My best friend told the waiter when ordering her chicken dish, and I quote, "Give it to me spicy - not bullshit spicy - but spicy as you guys eat it - as spicy as humanly spicy" and another one of my friends ordered the chicken vindaloo which is already supposed to be the spiciest thing available at any Indian restaurant. Yours truly CANNOT handle any sort of spicy and my taste buds are uber sensitive as to what qualifies as spicy. Neither my friend's "non-bullshit spicy" dish or my other friend's chicken vindaloo dish set off my taste bud's smoke alarm and folks if I didn't die then they WERE NOT spicy. So if you're looking for spicy food - go elsewhere...frankly if you're looking for amazing, out of this world food - go elsewhere. I cannot stress how much you come here for the overall experience and not for culinary reasons because in all honestly, the food here is pretty mediocre. Not the worst but certainly nowhere near the best I've ever had either. We all sampled each other dishes so things I got to try included: lamb tikka, chicken in supposedly spicy sauce, vindaloo and I got chicken korma. We all shared the white biryani rice - it was ok, nothing special. For dessert we pretended it was one of our friend's birthdays and as a result we got complimentary mango ice cream - it was ok, tasted very mild and vanilla-ish. The highlight for me was their na'an - amongst the table we shared the DELICIOUS butter na'an (this is just basically regular na'an pan-fried in butter, if you're not looking out for your waistline - then this is a no-brainer!), the potato na'an and the garlic na'an. Service here is VERY "wham bam, thank you mam!" - they seat you quickly, give you menus quickly, expect you to order quickly and churn out foods quickly as well. This place is very no frills - with the exception of the MAGNIFICENT SEA OF LIGHTS strung across the entire ceiling and through most of the walls with interesting decorations and artificial flowers woven in. Most of the lights are your standard Christmas bulb-y lights but if you look very closely you can make out some random strings of Halloween jack-o-lantern pumpkin lights, red chilli pepper lights and some random other knick knacks which add to the kitchy charm of this place. Great for quick group dinners or for a fun one-on-one date - space is a luxury here. Be prepared to have strangers practically sitting on your lap as you're wondering why your food isn't spicy, LOL. I came here with a few girlfriends this weekend - I've passed by this place many times and was intrigued by all the Christmas lights, but never got a chance to come in so I was excited to try it. There are three almost identical restaurants that share the same corner. Staff from all three restaurants stand outside pressuring you to come in. Some people find this off-putting, but I was expecting it so I laughed and went to Milon, where I was supposed to meet my friends. The restaunt was very small and a bit cramped - this is my main complaint. Otherwise, it was a really fun experience to eat here. I loved the quirky decor and the cheesy Bollywood music. The waiters were a bit flirty and chatty with us, but they were also pretty efficient with the service and they were very nice. The food is Indian, but it is prepared by Bengalis so there are some Bengali influences to the spelling of dishes and the preparation of the food. However, it is very good Indian food and the value is unbeatable. (I'm Indian and a decent cook so I have some credibility here). My favorites were the banana pakora & the vegetable house curry. I ordered a vegetable curry, which came with rice, bread, and daal & it was only $6.50. On top of that, the restaurant is BYOB with no corkage fee.
