Little ambience, outdated decor, ok service, terrible overpriced food. Ok. Maybe that's too extreme. The Walla Walla Valley Green Salad was good. Fresh, light vinaigrette over micro greens with fresh chèvre. The paella stuffed tomatoes sounded great on paper. They weren't. The ravioli were more like pierogis; dense dumplings with a sweet onion jam on side. Every dish was almost too accessorized (jams, fruits, nuts, olives, drizzles of who knows what). I eat the breakfast buffet because it comes free with the room. But I'm not really that happy with it. The oatmeal is like glue most days and I have run to Starbucks first thing and bring my coffee with me. I've been staying at the Marcus Whitman once a year for many years now. The facility is great but I'm not coming back to spend $$ at the restaurant. read more

This was a hard one to rate. The food upped the star level, because the service definitely deserved less. We visited on Labor Day weekend. While the food and cocktails are exceptional, the service was pathetically slow. We had to wait for *everything* and the waiter forgot to fill our water after the request. The women, who seemed to only have the hostess responsibilities during our dinner, are far more responsive. We asked one for water and got it promptly. (In fact, now that I think about it, they should have had some of the women helping tend the tables.) I did overhear a waiter say to another table they were short-handed and with a new person, but they need to find a way to compensate for that. The staff is friendly and welcoming, for sure, but it was a big disappointment to feel like we had to wait so long between every order/request and having it fulfilled. Again, the food is quite distinctly created and well-presented. (Except the steak, which was much closer to medium-rare than medium-well.) You do only get two small scallops, with that order, but they do taste wonderful. Service was *much* better at Brasserie Four (but get reservations) and the food there was exceptional, too. read more

Excellent Food, Impeccable Service My wife and I had a delightful dinner experience at the Marc Restaurant. The food was truly outstanding. (I had the Port Chop and my wife had Rack of Lamb). Appetizers, side dishes and desert were excellent too. Service was also superb. Katy was a delightful server. She was right there with everything we asked for and even took us on a tour of the kitchen area when we finished. We went to breakfast because it was included with the room. We were looking forward to it because they made a big song and dance about how great the included breakfast was. The Scrambled Eggs are pretty good. The potatoes are way too salty and so are the sausages. They claim it's farm to fork. Definitely do the tasting/pairing dinner :) We had a great time out. The bartender's choice cocktails were delicious and the service was impeccable. I wanted to love their food because of how awesome the whole experience was. Unfortunately, the food fell a little flat for me. Conceptually, the tasting menu was excellent. The execution was lacking. One of the crab and avocado tasters had SO much potential-if the avocados tasted fresh. It more resembled the pack of guacamole that you get from Costco. There was an awesome looking lamb dish....that tasted like beef stew I made in my crock pot last week. Just bland compared to what I was expecting from a place of this caliber. The steak was delicious, as was the salad and palate cleansing sorbet :) The dessert also fell flat for me. Decadent chocolate layer cake, very dense, potential to be amazing and fudgy and delicious...but was too dry and the flavor was pretty bland. Overall, we had an amazing night out and great service. I just don't think I'll be back for the unimaginative food at those prices. read more

This is one of my favorite places in town. It's my go to place. It is high end and comfortable. I love sitting by the fire in cold weather. I come here for drinks, for appetizers, for food. I always sit in the bar area that is more lively, more relaxed, has table seating, bar seating, and couch seating. You can get a full menu in the bar area. There is a drinks-only happy hour. This is more of a culinary experience and a time to blend ingredients with wine and delicious cocktails. I think one would be very disappointed in the portion sizes here, especially for the price. The Chef's Tasting is a unique experience and must not be missed. Even though the hotel made an error and accidentally cancelled our reservation the manager of the dining room was quick to adapt. He provided a great experience. It would have been 5 starts but we didn't get to have the chef come out and explain the dishes, like it was supposed to be with a Chef's tasting. Each course was fantastic. You must get the wine pairings as it really made a difference. The best part about the evening was at one point in the meal, they made raspberry and mango sorbet by taking berry puree and infusing it with liquid nitrogen and it froze up immediately. There was smoke everywhere around the bowl - it was the coolest thing ever to see. There are alot of nice touches with homemade smoked charcuterie, unique combinations, etc. It is definitely worth it! read more

The poor rating is due to the excessively cold air conditioning. The food and service were good but unless you have a ski parka along, with it being 85 degrees outside, you will be miserable. It was so cold we were miserable and didn't stay for dessert. Many others also left quickly while we were eating. We complained to the wait staff only to get the comment "sorry we have no control over the temperature " we've had great service previously but Sorry. We won't be back! read more

Just finishing up a phenomenal experience. My wife has some unusual and somewhat intrusive allergies, and they could not have been more accommodating. Many places will do what's needed, but never with the helpfulness of the Marc. The scallops were absolutely to die for and the local strawberries just made them pop. As was the ginger Creme caramel for dessert. You really cannot go wrong. We'll be back, and I suspect this will be a regular date stop for us. read more

We were so delighted to go to the Marc, as it an award winning restaurant. Our experience was much less than we'd hoped for. We waited over 5 minutes at the host stand before we were acknowledged, " someone will be with you". We were greated quickly, once we were seated, and served very tasty parm crisps and rolls. The specials were shared and a delicious, by the glass, Syrah was delivered. The Caesar salad sounded tasty, as did the shishito peppers. We also ordered the seafood pasta, and the shortrib stroganoff. Our appies arrived quickly. The shishitos were not blistered at all, merely warmed and the Caesar salad was very underdressed. The onion rings were sublime. I asked for a touch more dressing, and was brought a watery, un- emulsified few more table spoons of parmesan flavored watery liquid - noot Caesar at all. The salad had several unripe cherry tomatoes and the quail egg, was hard in the middle; truly a swing and a miss. The service was very efficient and we'll orchestrated. Our entrees arrived, and again; a swing and a miss. My husband said his seafood pasta tasted like "elevated senior citizen food", and my stroganoff had all the ingredients, but was underseasoned and lacked depth. The mushrooms, were tiny buttons, and there were very few. We were also challenged with a group of 30-somethings who were so loud, the manager had to ask them to quiet down. Again, the wine and the onion rings were a true highlight. As was the lovely service. The rest of the meal was uninspired, convention banquet food, at best. We went to The Marc for my son-in-law's birthday and ordered the catch of the day which was the king crab legs and we ended up getting very small snow crab leg pieces. When we questioned the server about the size of the crab legs he asked the chef about them and his response was that they were the correct weight for the order but they were way too small to be king crab legs. The service was good but we were very disappointed in the food in general. read more

Fresh bread and nice wine to start the evening. We ended up eating here on several occasions because we were staying in the hotel and it snowed the night we would have gone out and the cold kept me from wanting to wander. Each meal was really good. I like the appetizers and we had a burger at the bar, I think the burger was my favorite. But, we also had the Ribeye one night and that was totally yummy. I didn't experience any problems with service, all the people who worked the nights we ate here were lovely, friendly, and the bartender was really funny. I would totally eat here again. read more

The Marc is definitely one of my favorite somewhat local spots for fine dining. The staff is always friendly and accommodating and the food is out of this world spectacular. Everything is cooked to absolute perfection and is plated in the most beautiful way with flavors that just enhance each other wonderfully. We were fortunate enough to have a chefs table in the kitchen tonight for 4. We had a kiwi allergy and a strong distaste for seafood and the kitchen was very good about making sure those requests were met successfully. We had everything from candied Brie, diver scallops, salmon, short ribs, venison and a wonderful dessert course. Nothing required a knife, and every plate was licked clean. Combined with wonderful wine pairings and a plentiful cocktail menu, this dinner was an out of this world success. My utmost thanks and respect to the chefs and staff of The Marc. read more

Well let's start with the outdated decor, and furniture. It's a good sized dining room in the center of a classy old hotel. Great marble and columns in the lobby but restaurant needs a bit of updating. This restaurant is the thoroughfare for people walking to the bar. Will explain later. Seated promptly, drink orders taken. Server was pleasant and knowledgeable on menu items, esp since we were fine eating truffles, but not truffle oil. Appetizers were served promptly with a basket of homemade bread, whipped herb butter, and olive oil/balsamic on the plate poured by the server. Haven't seen that in a while. Green salad was fresh, micro greens, not just spring mix! Nice vinaigrette. Table mates enjoyed the winter onion soup with gruyere toast on top. Broth was delicious. The beet agnolotti with braised pork belly was strange. Goat cheese inside the pasta, a beet paste painted on the plate, and a small cube of pork belly fat, no meat... Pasta was perfectly cooked, cheese was nice and pungent, but the dish didn't go together ( now I sound like a judge from Chopped)! The soup eaters both ordered the filet that came with creamed spinach with truffle oil. This was served with some fried polenta and mascarpone which was melty and delicious. The steaks came pre sliced, and the spinach was just a few leaves, not like you would expect a 'creamed spinach' to be. And I don't think a 40$ filet should be pre sliced, or it should say so on the menu. The 43$ scallops, there were 3 of them, we're ok. Not great. The sear wasn't great, and they tasted a bit on the raw side. Served with a stinging nettle pasta which was super tasty, but over cooked. The chicken was cooked perfectly, wasn't dry, but was tough. ( that can be expected from a free range chicken, so I'm ok with that ). The skin was the best part, all salty and delicious. Served with Peruvian potato poutine, which was cooked potatoes, that were deep fried and had a cheese sauce on top. They were very dry, in edible. The restaurant manager came by our table to inquire about the dinner, so we mentioned the potatoes. He offered to bring more, but by then we were almost done the chicken so declined. He offered a free dessert. Desserts were ok, best was the creme brûlée, next being the choc cake, then carrot cake, then the choc cheesecake. They were fine but not omg you have to taste this fine! Ok, so let's get back to this restaurant being a 'runway' to the bar/lounge. So twenty odd tables/ booths with people spending top dollar for dinner, and the whole time you have people, adults, kids walking past you to get to the bar. Checking out the food as they go. So 300$ dinner and it's like a freeway in there. They need to work on that. And I was charged for the nasty potatoes. read more

Kudos to the new Chef in the Marc Restaurant from Denver, OMG. There is a lot of artesian hand crafted cooking going on here. Everything from the breakfast that features in house homemade yogurt to the in house smoker that smokes the bacon and sausage. I don't even normally like sausage gravy but this stuff rocks! Dinner was equally stellar. Loved the pomegranate salad dressing on the house salad with thin crispy root vegetables sprinkled liberally on top. The mushroom stuffed chicken was awesome. Stayed at the the Marcus Whitman hotel and figured we would wonder down to the bar for a drink one night. The drinks where nothing special but the service was among the slowest I have ever experienced. It took about 15 minutes to bring a drink after we ordered, it was annoying and ridiculous. we had the Rack of lamb and the duck. the duck was removed from the bones and piled for presentation, a smaller portion, was very good. the lamb were 6 shanks, slightly more rare for a medium rare request, but very flavorful, seasoned well, and the pumpkin cranberry flavors on the plate were different; I would recommend it. Service was good. Pricing was reasonable, of course on the high end, but for the location, it's what I expected. read more

I ordered the Spring Greens and the Pacific Northwest Seafood Chowder. The chowder was amazing and I would rate 5 stars although on the expensive side. The salad was very small for the price and while tasty, lacked substance. I attempted to order a side of either smoked salmon or grilled shrimp to accompany my salad but was told by the manager that they weren't willing to offer such an option. He further explained that they don't really do "to go" or "take out" orders which really had no bearing on the situation. For if I were dining in, I would still request smoked salmon or grilled shrimp with my salad. He also explained that their food is presented "beautifully" on their plates and that is why they don't push take out dining. He said that if I wanted shrimp or smoked salmon that I would have to order the entrees listed on the menu and would receive the entire meals. He also said that these were appetizers. Ultimately, he ruined my experience and provided terrible service. I often wonder how individuals rise to management positions with little to no customer service skills. The bar tender and server were quite pleasant when I picked up my order but the manager (employed in this position for roughly 5 months, he said) ruined my experience and I will not be returning anytime soon. This simply shows that no matter the quality of the food, poor service can ruin the dining experience. read more

Dinner was overpriced. Our waiter was not polite and did not know how to handle wine. We brought a bottle of cabernet and told him we wanted it opened to breathe before dinner, he opened it put his nose to the top of the bottle and said "It smells okay to me I'll just pout it." We told him no and asked him to decant it which he did so inexpertly it looked like grape soda with a foam on top. So overpriced, smarty-pants service and just okay food.
