***ABANDON HOPE ALL YE WHO DROP THEIR MAC OFF HERE*** This had to be the worst experience of my life. I've had root canals that weren't as painful. Sunday the 29th of March my nVidia geForce 8800GT video card died in my Mac Pro tower. The following monday I decided I would take it to The Mac Support Store rather than schlep it into Manhattan to Tekserve. Reason being, The Mac Support Store is 4 blocks from my apartment, "how convenient" I thought. I could not have been more wrong. I should have known I was in trouble when I entered the shop and the guy behind the desk was arguing with a potential customer on the phone. I knew exactly what was wrong with my computer because I researched the symptoms online and found that it was a known issue with this card and since it was still under Apple Care warranty it would not cost me anything. Despite me telling them what was the problem was they insisted it would take 1 to 3 days for them to do a diagnostic, then 3 to 5 days to get the part. After 3 days I called and was told that the diagnostic was not completed yet. On the 4th day they finally called me back and I was told what I already knew, that it was the video card. What he told me next put a knot in my gut. I was told it would take until April 8th to get the part and complete the repair! A full 11 days from when I dropped it off! When I told him that this was a ridiculously long amount of time to wait he argued with me that I knew how long a wait it would be when I authorized the repair. He also told me that it "might not" take that long but most likely it would. Curious how long Tekserve would take I called them on Friday and I was told that if I got it to them by 5 pm they would have it back to me on Monday the 5th (3 days!). I considered this option but I was too busy to make it there by 5pm. I also called Apple and was told that they overnight parts and that it shouldn't take longer than 3 days from diagnosis to repair. So today, Saturday the 3rd of April I called them back to see if the part had arrived yet because I wanted to pick up my computer and the part and do the work myself. I was told I could retrieve my computer but I was not allowed to get the part and that there was no way I could install it myself (a total lie). I immediately called Apple and complained about this shop. Apple customer support is so great that they put me on with a supervisor who looked up my case and told me that The Mac Support Store had ordered a completely different video card for my machine. Instead of replacing my nVidia 8800GT they were going to put in an ATI HD 2600XT without telling me! So Apple support hooked me up and waved all fees and is overnighting me a replacement 8800GT which I can easily install myself without voiding the warranty. So by Tuesday the 6th I will be back up and running (no thanks to The Mac Support Store who wasted a week of my time) I picked up my Mac Pro tower and took it home without any repairs being done. All I got from The Mac Support Store was a bad attitude, lies and arguments, all of which left a bad taste in my mouth. I was sincerely hoping this would be a convenient place to go for service close to home. Instead it was a nightmare and a headache I could have done without. These guys are unprofessional, slower than tar and dishonest to boot, not to mention surly and dismissive. If you live in Brooklyn and need your Mac serviced, do yourself a big favor and take it to Tekserve (where I've never had a bad experience). Thank you Apple Customer Support for saving me from an even bigger headache. ***ADDITIONAL*** I just searched a comparison of the card I have (nVidia geForce 8800 GT) and the card they ordered and were going to install without my approval or knowledge (ATI HD 2600 XT) shows that the ATI card benches at less than a third of the frame rate of the nVidia card. This card, while similarly priced, does not hold a candle to the performance of the nVidia card. So had I let them install it I would have seen a marked decrease in performance. Maybe they expected to get more repair work out of me to fix it? Who knows? But it's pretty freaking dishonest to put in a lesser card. Shame on you Mac Support Store! I hope Apple pulls your authorization! ***RESPONSE TO JEFF G COMMENT*** Jeff, you immediately try to discredit anyone who is unsatisfied with your service. What a sad, paranoid little man you are. I'll be happy to come down there and discuss this matter with you in person if you like. Your canned accusation of 'revenge' does not address any of the reasons for the bad reviews. It's simply an attempt to shift the blame to the customer. I will NEVER in a million years use your service again or recommend your shop to anyone I know. Maybe you can explain to me why your technicians ordered the wrong video card to replace the one I have? You tried to stick me with a substandard replacement and I'd like to know why. read more

The negative reviews almost put me off this place but since there were also good reviews I decided to check it out for myself. I figured there was no harm in bringing in my Macbook pro which wouldn't boot for the free diagnostic. The counter guy (who was attentive and answered all my questions) told me one to three days for the results. He also mentioned they are working on quicker turn around time overall. We'll see. So I waited for my results and got them via email two days later. They said I needed a new hard drive. When I called the same guy said the drive failed and explained the repair process. Again, he was attentive and answered all my questions. No attitude, though I would say he was a little rushed because their phone is constantly ringing. I heard another service person was taking most of the calls while I was being helped. I must say while waiting for a bomb to drop there wasn't any. I approved the work and got my computer back in four days and it was working perfectly. Kind of a pain that I needed to reload all my apps but I understand that's my task since they couldn't install all my apps for me. Before I left the counter guy assured the repair for 45 days and if I should have any issues to call them back immediately. Frankly there was nothing to complain about that I could find. I think you can always find *something* to complain about, but nothing with this store put me off. I had a very good experience from start to finish and would recommend them. read more

I work in a law office that is all mac - unbelievable but true. When I called them up they initially put me on hold and then were back in about five minutes. I spoke with person there and explained we had a Macbook that just froze on a grey screen. The person I spoke with suggested I bring it in, which I did. Where I got there there were 2 people at the counter assisting customers. After an initial wait I checked it in and it turned out the hard drive had "lost it's partition". The same person I spoke with on the phone explained that a lost partition meant the drive wouldn't mount and they would need to get back to me in 1-3 days with the results of their diagnosis. On day 2 I got a call that the the old drive still wouldn't mount and the hard drive needed to be replaced. We had some very important data on that drive, so they suggested data recovery which was a flat rate of $499. After an initial shock I shopped this service around and every other place wanted $1000 or more for the same work! And the other places also change the price depending on the size of your drive. Only the Mac Support Store charged a flat rate for ANY size drive. I'm happy I went with The Mac Support Store - they recovered everything we needed, which was a relief to my boss, and transferred the recovered data to the new hard drive. Every person I spoke to there was clear and respectful about their process and I also recommend them without hesitation. read more

I am very pleased by this, my first experience with The Mac Support Store. I can't offer an opinion on the brick & mortar store, however, as my transaction was a mail order via eBay. On December 30, 2015, I ordered an ATI Radeon HD 6970 graphics card to replace the failed GPU in our late-2009 iMac. It was shipped Fedex on 4 January and I received it on 9 Jan. I installed it immediately and the computer is now working flawlessly. The price was near the high end of the range for this item, Apple P/N 661-5969, but it was worth it for me to have it shipped from NY rather than China, which would have taken considerably longer. For comparison, I ordered an optical drive SATA cable for the same iMac from an Amazon Marketplace vendor on 9 Jan and it is shipping from Shenzhen, China with an expected delivery date of "Feb 4 - Feb 23." The GPU I ordered from Mac Support Store appears to be brand new and unused. It was shipped in its original anti-static bag inside a very sturdy cardboard box, with bubble wrap to prevent the card from sliding around inside the box. I have no complaints and would certainly order Mac components from this seller again, should the need arise. read more

My iMac hard drive completely ground to a halt when I returned from my vacation. I really did not want to haul the computer to TechServ in Manhattan. Did a search and found these guys. Easily made a same day appointment on line. When I got there, Judy was very sympothetic and reassuring. They checked out my computer when they said they would and contacted me on the damage. Though they couldn't retrieve the data because the drive was so damaged, they referred me to a data recovery company and took care of shipping it for me. They put in a new drive and OS in the time frame they said they would and contacted me to come in and pick it up. The only bad thing, they forgot to tell me that they had to change my password which scared me when I got ready to reinstall my programs. A quick phone call and they told me the new password. Glad that they are close by should I ever have another issue with my Apple computers. Side note... make sure you always back up your computer! Though the data recovery people were able to get some of the data back, I lost a lot if files and it cost $$$$ to have that work done. read more

3 great experiences: 1. iphone screen smashed. Fixed. Was about to pay but when asked to test it realized I still couldn't make calls. Fixed 100% and no charge since they had said it was fixed the first time when it wasn't. 2. WORD didn't work because I had somehow stored Word twice and computer had identity crisis. Free Diagnostic. Fixed. No Charge for that. I asked about a check up for battery. It was about to die.... I knew that. What I didn't know was that it would cost a whole lot more to fix it if I waited for that to happen. So, I ordered a new battery. 3. Got update on when battery will be in and how long it will take to finish the job. Not bad. Thanks to Jeff I won't kill the logic board! Laid back but very focused and professional. Why go to Apple or Tekserve when I can go right here in Brooklyn for better, faster service, without the hype and the long waits? If you haven't been there in a while--try again. I brought my Mac Pro G5 and G raid external hard drive here when both suddenly refused to start up. The staff was fantastic and checking everything in was painless. They contacted me the next day with the diagnostic report and an estimate of how long the repair would take. They then called the day after that to tell me they would be able to recover everything on my computer (for only a couple hundred bucks) but that the drive was too damaged for them to fix. Had my computer back the next day and they sent my drive to Drive Savers in CA at no cost to me for further investigation and because of a referral deal they have with the company I got 10% off the cost of repair (which was good because Drive Savers was $$$$$$!). After everything was done they followed up to make sure everything had worked out ok. I really couldn't be happier with their service and results (not their fault my hard drive was too messed up to repair in their facility). read more

I have to say I am baffled by the all the negative reviews these guys are getting - the hard drive failed in my 2007 MBP after years of heavy use. They replaced the drive and the logic board - which had been replaced by the much ballyhooed competition when the computer was but 5 months old - and the machine has been running great. I got my MBP back in less than a week, repaired for what I consider to be a totally reasonable cost. Received an estimate for the repair and a text message to let me know it was ready in a timely way. I had been there once before for diagnostics on a failed Lacie drive and aged Powerbook, they provided these also in a timely way. I have found their service to be superlative and both guys to be professional and courteous. The fact that they are 10 minute drive from my house instead of a 2 hour round trip to 23rd street is a big plus. Would definitely return for any further service needs. read more

My friend said I should go here after they had a good experience with their data recovery experience. I found their recovery service to be both professional and thorough. I got back *all* my data plus my family pictures and photographs. If you want them to import your data they can do that for $50 more. Otherwise you have to import stuff yourself and that takes some time and know-how. For me it wasn't that hard though i had some trouble importing my address book contacts. I called them and they walked me through it. They're also less expensive than every other place I called, have a service guarantee (if they can't recover it you don't pay) and they're in Brooklyn! I already recommended them to my friend that works at a production company who needs recovery on some large drives. All the other places charge by the size of the drive while only the mac support store charges a flat rate for any size drive. NICE!! read more

Well, as a Manhattan magazine media person (Art Director on a Mac) I have to tell you that while I love Tekserve, we have something better in OUR OWN BROOKLYN!!!! I live in Park Slope and just discovered to my amazement that I can get great MAC service, and order everything out here from a place called The Mac Support Store!! I can't say enough good stuff about this place: great service (very personal and complete). I ordered peripherals through them with great success, they solved a problem on my personal computer in no time, and walked me through the setup process of other software knowledgably and cheerfully! I highly recommend them. My iBook screen went black so I brought it in for a free estimate (note - other places I've been to want to charge for an estimate - they don't). They had my estimate in 2 days instead of 3. To their credit they called me with the estimate since the other email I use had bounced back to them. So they wanted to make sure I stayed informed and there was no lag in turn around. Stellar! Their diagnosis was the iBook needed a new inverter board - and after I called two other places to compare price this place beat the other two. I approved the repair and they delivered it on time and the screen was working again. It's been a few months and the screen is still working great. One star deducted because the location is off the beaten path. But since I've been going to the Bell House house it doesn't seem like such an effort to head down there anymore. read more

Now, I stay in my neighborhood -- in Brooklyn. I'm so pleased with the service at the Mac Support Store that I go directly there. Over the past few days -- while in Chicago on a business trip -- my Word program went bonkers! I could not open even one document without a whole slew of random Word documents cascading down my screen. This place is great! Took what I thought was a dying 2009 Macbook Pro in and left one hour later with it working faster than it has in years for less than $200. I made an appointment over the phone for the next day first thing in the morning, and Jeff fixed it up on the spot. He was very good at explaining all the things that were going on with it. Also he suggested one more way to make it run even faster for what I use my laptop for, but brought it up as something to think about in the future so I didn't feel any pressure on the spot to spend more money than necessary at the moment. They are super. I brought in an iMac to them and they're very attentive and friendly. The work they did was fully explained before I spent any money for the repair. In about 3 days my iMac was delivered back and now it works great. It's been about two months and I've had no problems whatsoever. I think one (maybe 2) of the people there has been working on Macs since the early eighties. I also checked out their blog and there's a free "Mac handbook" that's incredibly useful. I keep it handy just in case of future emergencies, and would recommend any Mac user to download it. It's answered several of my questions so far, and thankfully it's really easy to understand! Brought my Imac with a defective optical drive, it's those Matshita drives that seem to be defected, as lots of people have same problem if you check Apple's website. My drive wouldn't read any types of CD's and it wouldn't read blank DVD's as well as being picky with DVD's with a data on them, some would play others would get ejected. I've had this problem for a long time, but finally last week decided to get it done. After a week had passed I had my Imac back with a new optical drive installed, a Pioneer. This one is much better, disks go in much more smoothly and without a resistance as with a previous drive. It doesn't seem to make loud noises as the previous one did either. Great job overall. I've had issues with my Macbook for the last year or so. A friend recommended I bring my Mac in because Apple had admitted a problem with Macbook hard drives after 3 years. Here's the beauty - my friend knew it b/c he's on the The Mac Support Store mailing list and they let everyone know that Apple covers the total repair cost. Now I understand this brings the store business, but frankly they didn't have to tell us. Considering I could have been charged for out of warranty repair, I'd say those are commendable standards. I was in Brooklyn visiting family and my laptop went all wierd on me. I am not a technical guy at all and when a friend referred me to The Mac Support Store I said lets give them a try. I dropped my computer off with them and a day later I got a call with what was needing to be done. I thought the pricing was fair, so I agreed. Three days later I got the computer back and it worked almost as good as the day I got it. Their customer service was great and they let me know what was needed in simple English.
