This place is jam packed with families looking for a good, homestyle meal that's a bit classed up but not too much to break the bank. It's also the kind of place you can take your kid because a loud shout from them wont turn any heads. Burgers here are great and usually what I stick with. My daughter's fish sticks were hand breaded and plentiful. It's a good value for the kids meal and it's nice that it's real food, even if not the healthiest. Other guest with me got the fish tacos and they looked fantastic. They came with a side of guac, chips and salsa. I really wish they had a chicken or steak version as i'm not into fish. That's a damn good pancake! I try not to eat flour and that's still a damn good pancake! I have been wanting to come here for a while now. After a busted Monday venture for lunch (they are closed Mondays) this seemed like the perfect spring Sunday morning for a late breakfast / lunch / Brunch! Spot on and a great choice. I had the jalapeño hash with a couple of over easy eggs on top and my girlfriend had a strawberry pancake and some hash browns. Now the waitress suggested the pancakes and even though I don't eat flour I just had to try it after the moans it brought out from across the table! Wow, moans deserved, this is one damn good pancake, super light, sweet, flavorful and....what else...damn good! Upper Eat Street, as I call it, just keeps getting better. The Lowbrow, while not new, was a new experience for us and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The beer list looked extensive, but we came for the food and were not disappointed. It's a bar, but it's more than bar food. It's comfy food. The fish tacos are delightful, and the burgers are very tasty. Portions are large, prices are reasonable, service is fast and you can hear your tablemates when they talk. It's a concept that should be adopted by most restaurants. Neighborhood joints of this caliber ought to be patronized simply because they're local. I hesitated on this place for years. I was like another burger joint in south Minneapolis, big deal. But it kind of is a big deal. I've only been here on Friday nights and it is BUSY. I was able to make a reservation the first time (our party was 6+), we had to wait a little while for our table, but no big deal. This last time it was packed, thankfully there were three spots open at the bar for us to grab as soon as we walked in the door. The bartenders taking care of us were very attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. I did have to ask what the burger of the month was because we weren't able to see the specials menu from where we were seated. I don't remember exactly what was on my burger for their November BotM, but I got it and it was fantastic. It had some kick to it, habanero cheese possibly, regardless, it was delicious. The first time I came I had the beet salad with the goat cheese fritters, YUM! I also split the Royal Jam burger and fries which was also very good. The burgers are so tender they almost fall apart, napkins are recommended. I also had the chocolate stout cake, it was good, but I did not need any more food and my waistband yelled at me for the rest of the night. Leah G and I were looking for somewhere that we both had not been to eat for happy hour. She suggested The Lowbrow, so we stopped in. One of the first things I noticed was that on Monday's 10% of our bill goes towards a charitable group. What an awesome idea to give back to the community. I loved it! The restaurant was small and cozy. They even had a patio which helped expand seating. Food: We decided to split something because neither of us were super hungry. We split the Rachel. Our server and the kitchen were awesome and split the sandwich down the middle and served to us split up. Always a huge plus when a restaurant does that for you! The portion was a perfect size to split. The French fries were amazing. They were thin and crispy, just the way I like them. The 1000 island dressing that came with the sandwich was a great dipping sauce for the French fries too. The Lowbrow seems to be a little more geared towards brunch. I will be back in to around the brunch hour to give it a try! My only recommendation would be to have a more hearty option on the appetizer list. Tasty Gluten Free Review +gluten free menu noted items In town for a vacation week with some family and as always used my trusty yElp app to find the best gluten-free friendly restaurants around. I stumbled upon the Lowbrow as a high rated establishment with brunch, beer, and a wide variety of menu items to chose from. The service itself and a few food items were the reason for 3 stars. Of course they were pretty busy, there seemed like there was no AC, and the table didn't have napkins, had to ask for them. Our waitress seemed like she was having a rough day and kind of treated us like peasants. It took about 25-30 minutes for our order to come out, our drinks also remained half empty half the time and no one to refill, or ask to refill. We ordered some deviled eggs appetizer and a Elvis sandwich (gluten-free). Now be warned the gluten free bun is complete garbage (points for having a gf bun). However it falls apart before you can even pick it up, it's one of the worst gluten-free buns I've ever experienced and I've tried over 10 different brands. I also got the egg sandwich with sausage, bacon, tomato, and some mayo I believe which was tasty and pretty good but nothing impressive. Our hash browns for both of our orders were completely raw underneath like they forgot to cook them on both sides, after waiting 30 minutes was not about to ask this waitress for new ones. I had a solo lunch (!!!) here after a work meeting across the street at Sebastian Joe's. Somehow I had never been before, and I was excited to finally have the opportunity to check it out. First, it is CUTE in there. I really liked the decor. The service was also great. I ordered a Lift Bridge Farm Girl with my meal, and my server came back a few minutes later with a second beer (in a water glass). She apologized that the first pour was a little short, and explained that it was the end of the keg. Anyway, she brought me the rest of the keg! No complaints. The burger was delicious. I got the Americana - American cheese, shredded lettuce, house made thousand island dressing, and fried pickles! The fries were also excellent. There were a couple that were extra crispy, and it made me want an entire plate of super well done fries. Yummmm. We're obsessed with the mushroom and swiss burger. It's our go-to. We always get them with fries and extra garlic aioli for dipping those tasty little fries. I haven't explored the menu much beyond these burgers so that's all I can tell you, other than the fact that my mother-in-law enjoys their basil-tomato chicken sandwich with the side salad. Four stars instead of five only because the burgers aren't always cooked how we ask them. It totally fulfilled my burger craving. There was a good amount of flavor coming from the patty and the cheese was a smart addition. I'll be honest... we had no intention of dining at the Lowbrow. We wanted to eat at Revival, but changed our plans because we didn't want to wait an hour plus at Revival. I will eat there someday, I swear. The Lowbrow is kind of the opposite of Revival. Burgers and beer. The place itself is cute. We sat out on the patio because it was a nice night. I had the fried egg sandwich, which was tasty. Everyone I was with got a sandwich or burger of some sort. We also got the chili cheese fries appetizer for the table, which were yummy. If you want a basic beer and some good grub, the food here will certainly fit that need. I would like to try brunch here sometime. My biggest issue was the service. Our waitress was overwhelmed -- too many tables, not enough time. Generally speaking, I feel bad when our server is in such a situation and try not to be too much of an ass about it. But it was really kind of on the ridiculous end. We were not offered a new round of drinks (had to ask). Other people brought our food to the table and walked away before we could ask for basics like silverware, napkins or ketchup. And one of my friends received a side salad instead of fries, and we actually had to go into the restaurant to talk to the hostess to get that fixed. When our server finally reappeared, she was very apologetic but she also spent about four minutes whining to our table about how they had overseated her and she was over capacity. This was a spur of the moment decision, but one that we didn't regret. While attempting to get into a restaurant across the street with a 2 1/2 hour wait, we decided to give Lowbrow a shot.... and we were not disappointed! This was a rare date night for my husband and I and we were not about to give up on the opportunity to have a nice dinner together. The Lowbrow delivered with reasonably priced entrees and pleasant beverages. The staff was outrageously nice and friendly. As for drinks, I opted for the blueberry lemonade which I would highly recommend. This is a brand new place and close to home. The atmosphere is open and breezy and they have some very clever touches (check out the signage for the restrooms). The table tops are very unique (in a good way) and I really like the color scheme they used in the whole place. They don't have a lot on tap but they have good selections (their wine list is also very well picked) and the menu looks great too. I had a salad with balsamic vinaigrette which was tasty, but my husband ordered the winner of the evening: the bison chili. It is a MUST try...absolutely delicious!! This is the kind of place I can see myself coming to regularly. I can safely say that because I met up with a friend here and she comes here regularly. She told me something like, "I've been here a million times and I've never had any issues and I find issues EVERYWHERE". It really comes across as a bar/eatery that cares about maintaining a comfortable, inviting space as well as providing very professional customer service. My friend let me know that everything she orders is always very good, but she especially loves the Bison chili and her boyfriend always gets the Pesto Pasta. I got a cup of the chili as a starter and it was delicious and generous. I also got a barbecue bacon burger that was SUPER delicious. Awesome-tasting BBQ sauce. We were there during one of Winter 2019's signature extra-taxing snowstorms, and the place filled up with a lot of Minneapolitans that were ducking in for shelter and comfort. Despite the crowd, our server, Alicia (I think) was always paying attention to us. She was really friendly and was working hard to keep everyone happy. No matter who I'm hanging with or when, I know we can hit up The Lowbrow for food we'll all agree on. Brunch is a great meal; you can get something savory to eat in the morning while your friends can continue to order disgusting sweet dishes like pancakes or waffles. Everyone wins! The Lowbrow was pretty open for a Sunday morning, but I blame it on Daylight Savings messing up our internal clocks. We strolled in around one (although my body still thought it was noon), just in time for brunch. I ordered the mushroom and swiss omlette with a side of Fisher Farm bacon while Jared ordered the Elvis sandwich - peanut butter, bananas, and BACON - for himself. The omlette was fluffy and HUGE. I ate about half of it. The swiss was tangy and pungent, maybe a little too much for me but the egg/cheese ratio was good. The bacon was cooked super crisp; it's thick cut , very crunchy, and the flatness of it suggests it was cooked under a weight. Some people don't like super dry super crunchy bacon, but I enjoyed like it that way. The Elvis tasted pretty tasty too, from the bites I had. I'm sure you wouldn't miss the bacon if you order it that way (and you can). I'm sure Elvis would like it too, although he might not like the quantity ("Only ONE sandwich? Have mercy!") The slices of grapefruit was a nice refreshing end for brunch. The pricepoints are affordable and I hope this becomes a neighborhood hangout. Decor is hip but not intimidating or too trendy; there's a great mural on one wall and the other wall where the bar is finally has some art up. All posters are from Aesthetic Apparatus and available to purchase. If I weren't currently saving my pennies, I'd get the NATURE one. The bar counter itself is pretty cool; old baseball cards covered in a layer of epoxy. It's a fun touch. Service was pretty good, so they may be reading Yelp reviews. Our waiter was attentive and nice. He even got us lunch/dinner menus so we could see what else they had. The tempeh rueben looks good, but so far Seward Co-op's is the best I've hard. Let's see how they compare. Also as we left, we got called out from a passing car, "You guys are a cute couple!" That brightened my day, although I'm not sure how cute it looked toddling like an old couple on the sidewalk to avoid wiping out. Overall, I liked the Lowbrow. I'm not exactly sure how this place ended up on my list for breakfast. I had never heard of it and thought I hit most of South Minneapolis through the summer. Maybe I heard the whispers of "bacon pancakes" in my sleep and I somehow found it? Either way, swung by here Sunday morning for some brunch to give it a go. Newsflash, get here early. We got there a little after 9am when they opened, and the place was starting to fill up. By 9.30, you're waiting. Parking is going to be street side. Service was fantastic throughout, even when I was a dope and kicked the table spilling my coffee a bit (pretty sure the table insulted me and needed the kick), our server was there to refill and get me some extra napkins for myself but also cleaned up the spill. Loved the decor in there too. The mural on the wall was really fun to look at and talk about while we waited. And oh yeah, standard serving - no number and wait stuff. Hurray! I opted for the salmon scramble with a bacon cake and salad instead of taters. The woman opted for the classic with bacon, herb taters and a stack of chocolate chip-banana cakes. Was a bit hesitant to get the salmon scramble given the chives mention in the description, but, decided I'd risk breakfast and my breath to try it. And oh yeah, cakes come standard with real maple syrup. Team high five! Food came out pretty quick, about 8-10 minutes. Salmon scramble - a-fucking-mazing. Not a word, but it flies here. The chives were not too prominent at all, and provided a great back flavor. Smokiness of the salmon was the dominant flavor and that was just amazing. Very nice cooling cream flavor from the cream cheese that was lightly added and gooed up in the dish, while the eggs were still fluffy scrambled and just perfect. I said it before in another review with pink fish scrambles, they're tough to pull off, but, if you got it, they're out of this world good... and this was far and away out of this world good. Then, as I dig into the bacon cake I hear the unmistakeable tone of The Price Is Right losing horn play through my head. The cake itself was a solid and had great flavor, but, scant amounts of bacon, and the texture of the really crisp bacon was just not right. Disappointed? You can bet your nuts I was. However, I look across the table and notice I've got a lot of chocolate chip-banana pancakes to eat and these are some tasty little things. Great sweetness, the buttermilk-chocolate-banana combo is just right, and the texture of the cakes are amazing. After breaking the stick on the one timer with the bacon cakes, this one is hammered home top shelf. That's a hockey reference for those wondering what the hell I was just talking about. Bacon in the classic was amazing. Thick cut, chewy, well cured with a little sweetness and great salt. Herb fried taters were really good too. Crunchy edges to the potatoes were just perfect and the toast was amazing. One of the better slices of toast I've had a restaurant that really helped shovel the eggs in. I've only ordered takeout from this restaurant because I moved to the neighborhood in the middle of the global pandemic. I have to say it's just been great. Also I've said it before and I'll say it again, I feel most Alive when my mouth is on fire. Well the jalapeño poppers from this place are insanity. They lit me right up. Trust me, you try one...not SUPER spicy, maybe even a second...and then you get The One. The One is the spiciest jalapeño popper youve ever had and you love it. They do have a spicy disclaimer on the menu and they are not joking around. The dipping sauce cools it down but you should have something else on hand if you're not a spice regular. I typically get a grilled cheese but I've had the tofu sandwich and that was great too. Oh and if you're craving a treat, the stout cake is incredible. I met some friends here for brunch and none of us had been before. While we waited in our comfy patio seats, we decided to first order some beef nachos with guacamole. They were awesome! They were homemade chips with a thick and crunchy texture, yummy salsa and the guac was a bonus. The cheese and meat were evenly melted, rather than all clumped together. We even got more chips to finish off the salsa and guac. I barely had room to eat my meal, which was the veggie scramble with potatoes. The sourdough bread toast was a surprising touch. Lowbrow has obviously worked hard at protecting their guests during the Covid outbreak. The protocols I observed while enjoying a great outdoor lunch were well orchestrated but a quick trip to the restroom confirmed they're taking extra steps. Our server, Betty, was friendly, knew the menu to the letter and was obviously working hard to make everyone comfortable. There appears to be a nice team in place as moving tables, assisting with food deliveries and more were all being accomplished with a smile. Lowbrow has long been a favorite and I feel better than ever after this past weekend's lunch. We'll be back soon and hope that lots of Yelpers will be around as well! read more

I had seen this place a few times on my way to Revival. It is located across the street from Revival. We went on a Saturday evening. We were able to find a parking spot across the street. There was a had a bit of a wait. One of the women waiting said she was a frequent customer for the burgers. The burgers and fries was a great choice! I ordered The Fire Breather. At the suggestion of the waitress, I asked for extra spicy mayo for my fries. Yum!! The restaurants in that area are only allowed to have a limited liquor license. That being said they have a selection of beer and wine. I had the red sangria. It was just okay. Mine was a bit watered down. The restrooms are gender-neutral and clean. read more

The Lowbrow is another of the seemingly ubiquitous South Minneapolis neighborhood cafes/bistros serving high caliber food in a casual space. My Shrooms and Swiss burger was flavorful, juicy and generously topped. The Greek inspired side salad was delicious. The handcut fries very good. A friend had the Fire Breather burger which snuck up on him with a slow burn. Iced tea tasted fresh brewed and the Lowbrow offers free refills. I couldn't resist topping off my dinner with a slice of flaky apple pie. On a recent weekday evening the place was busy but we waited only 5 minutes for a table. I can see how crowded this may get at different times with much longer wait times the norm. While there were numerous young families represented, the clientelle was quite diverse, all appearing satisfied, comfortable and animated. Service was prompt, friendly and attentive. Noise levels made conversation a bit of a challenge. Plentiful free parking on Nicollet or side streets. An amusing touch are the signs for the bathrooms. They're mounted on the wall opposite each and designed to be read in the mirrors mounted on the doors. All-in-all, very much worth revisiting to sample other fare. read more

Came here later than normal for a dinner but was able to be seated right away. I feel in love with the Paint-by-Number wall. If it has woodland creature or paint-by-number - I'm in. This has both! Their beer selection is decent and you can't beat the prices. We started with deviled eggs that were meh. Not enough flavor. We also ordered the fried pickles that were delicious. I got a burger that was good. Friends got a grilled cheese that I was told was "okay" and my other friend got a different burger that was also "okay". I will come back to give it another shot. The Lowbrow is exactly what I love about a neighborhood restaurant... feels comfortable and welcoming, unpretentious, and serves great food. A recent dinner illustrated the diversity of people who enjoy the spot. Parents with kids. Parents without their kids. Seniors. Young tattooed folks. The occasional hipster. People dressed up for first dates. I personally enjoy a location that can draw a crowd that's not made up of all the same people at the same tables. We tried to be good the last time we went. We ordered a burger with the mixed greens instead of fries... but our burger was The Highbrow Burger which means it was slathered in Brie, carmelized onions and garlic aioli, so the salad didn't really save our arteries. But oh, this burger. Juicy, cooked medium to our liking, hot, and while I never would have thought of Brie for a burger, it works. It's got some high-falutin' toppings but it's not overcomplicated; you can still taste the grass-fed beef and appreciate the flavors without feeling like they're competing with each other. We had the chocolate stout cake for dessert. It was decent. To be fair, I don't go crazy over a cake, but I love frosting. The cake itself seemed a little dry but we were also there pretty late on a weeknight. My boyfriend loved it! Looking forward to trying brunch here one of these days. read more

For starters, we ordered the "half order" of nachos with beef. Perfect size, perfect taste. My son had the "Americana" burger. Really good, two party burger with a homemade 1000 Island dressing. Very tasty. I had the "BBQ Bacon" burger. A good, no frills, tasty burger. The bacon they used was cut extra thick. The BBQ sauce, which was homemade, was perfect. I could taste it, enjoy it, but it was overwhelming like a lot of other places attempt at a BBQ burger. The service (Ryan) was top notch. I thought the place had a very cozy, friendly vibe to it.
