Suzie Q's Fun Facts: Locks are designed similarly to Apple devices' Lightning chargers: Their cylinders (the thingy that is changed to re-key a lock) are proprietary, so you generally can't re-key a lock so that it matches a key for a lock made by a different manufacturer. =~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~=~ I decided to upgrade my front door hardware, buying a high-quality Schlage "smart" keypad deadbolt and matching door handle. LA has no shortage of options for locksmiths, and Yelp makes it super easy to get quotes with its online quoting function. (One area where it could improve: Allow a sender to upload photos, since practically every locksmith asked me to send photos of my door, but I couldn't do that on Yelp... I had to text or e-mail, and that was annoying). Chris of The Locksmith Guys responded quickly, asking me to e-mail him the photos. He received them, then called me immediately to discuss my job. He was friendly, but professional and matter of fact. Although my job wasn't urgent, he re-routed one of his locksmiths in the field, who came to my house around an hour after he and I spoke. Mike, my locksmith, could not have been more friendly or professional. Although my 100-year-old door didn't make a perfect seal with the doorjam, and the wood in the doorjam is starting to disintegrate, Mike truly went out of his way to make sure the new hardware fit, and that the door would open and close without impediment (to ensure that the door could be both locked, and unlocked, remotely, which is one of the biggest selling points of the Schlage "Connect" line of deadbolts). Incidentally, while The Locksmith Guys were *one* of the cheapest quotes, they weren't the absolute cheapest. At least one other high-rated locksmith offered to do the job for the same money, but to also throw in a free configuration of the Schlage smart deadbolt (this company would have charged me extra). But all things considered, I couldn't be happier with the service or the price, so no complaints. read more

I had tried to use a different company in the area and even though we set an appointment for the following day (today) and they were great via text confirming all the details, when our appointment time came around today, they just didn't show and didn't respond to any calls or texts, even though I could see that their "read" receipts showed them reading my text messages.
