Really enjoyed these kolaches. Kolaches are a staple in South Texas and especially in the New Braunfels area near my hometown. There was a great variety to choose from. More importantly the dough was perfect packing just the right crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. We sampled a variety and have to say the sweet ones were off the charts. We had the cinnamon/cream cheese and the strawberry/cream cheese. I would give the cinnamon one the slight edge in preference. For savory the Texan was magical. With a nice beef sausage, jalapeno and cheese it was delightful. The sausage and gravy one was different and a novelty but not our fave. If in the area stop in for a bite of delight. read more

Oh my word!!! It had been QUITE some time that I was here last and I'll never let that much time go by again. Hruska's is AMAZING!!! The bacon, egg, cheese, and jalapeno is my favorite. It has so much flavor. They also fill the kolaches with sooo much filling - you really have an amazing bite each time. The dough itself is slightly sweet. They are also served warm which is a wonderful touch. Their special of the month, the Monte Cristo, was truly out of this world and had so much flavor. I was informed that this place is a very popular bakery that serves Czech pastries. I think the pastries were pretty good but they weren't my favorite. We ordered the bacon, egg and jalapeño; the sausage, egg and jalepeno; the egg and veggie; the cinnamon; and the blueberry kolaches. The baked items were indeed fresh but not necessarily hot - they were more lukewarm. There is a lot more filling than there is bread, and this might also be unexpected since it does look like a bakery. The bread is a bit on the sweeter side while I found the egg pastries to be a little dry and needing more flavor. The sweet pastries were very good though. For 5 pastries, we spent about $20, so the price point is pretty good. However, the service was off. When I came in, the staff member acknowledged that she would be with me in a moment and that she was putting more baked items out. Then, at some point, she was finished and simply walked to the register. From my angle, which was right in front of the case, I could not see that she was at the register. I was pleasantly surprised to see a kolache shop just down the street from where I was staying in American Fork. The shop is small and there is a little bit of seating to stay, but it's mostly to go spot. They have a wide array of Sweet n Savory flavors. I got one of the Texans. It was jalapeño sausage and cheese. It was super tasty high-quality sausage, a lot of jalapeños to be ready for spicy and maybe a little less cheese then he would've hoped for, but I was more than happy. My only feedback is that the dough was slightly dry. Had a very nice flavor to it, and I know a high altitude baking can be tough and finicky sometimes. I would definitely come back. The dude ringing me up was beyond helpful beyond kind, and excluded. The most positive energy. I would come back 1000 times over just because of him honestly. Maybe I got a little unlucky. This whole review should just say "My 5 and 8 year olds give this place a 10/10" since that really says it all. They never complain when we go here, even when there is a bit of a line in the early morning rush. Everyone is still nice and calm while addressing the growing line. Some of our favorites are the strawberry Nutella, cinnamon and the Texano. I lived in Texas for awhile and the Texano is true to form and they don't skimp on the sausage! We bought the punch pass they have every new year, and it's totally worth it, since we frequent this place. It's not a place to really go and sit down, so keep that in mind. Lots to love about this place. Small, quaint, eclectic and delicious Kolaches. Almost a cult following. Reminiscent of a NY deli where there's a small store and you're in and out. The service is fast as long as the people in front of you are decisive. It's all prepared and they collect your order very quickly. Always service with a smile. Even if there's a big line outside (if you're there after 9 or so on a Saturday morning) it goes pretty quickly. I love both their sweet and savory options. They have quite an array of both. My favorite sweet is the triple berry, so good. Savory is a little harder to pick a favorite. Most I've tried I love. They usually have specialty ones that are there for a limited time. Excellent in food, excellent in service! For those of you who have never had a Kolache, it comes in two forms: 1) a completely filled baked wheat bun, usually of some form of savory filling. Think a buttery roll that you bite into and get an amazing tasty surprise in the form of eggs and bacon! My favorite of the savory type is egg jalapeno and bacon (or sausage), although the brisket or sausage and gravy are also very good. They have non-meat varieties as well. 2) an open faced bun similar in shape to a Danish but with a more bun-like dough with a sweet filling in the middle. My favorites are the mixed berry and cream or and of the other fruit flavors. They are both delicious and come in a variety of flavors. They are very filling. You can buy them individually or by the dozen. Although they continue to make them throughout the morning, sometimes certain varieties sell out quickly and you may have to wait. Let's talk about service for a second. One extremely helpful thing they do is to mark the box they come in with the name of the variety you have chosen by the position the variety is in the box. This means you know exactly which one you are going to eat since the savory ones are completely round and have not any distinguishing marks. look at the lid of the box and pick which one if you are getting a variety. a second highly rated service item in my book has been the willingness of the team at a couple of different locations to accept large orders for business meetings. several times i have ordered ahead and they have been ready even for early morning meetings. I appreciate their willing ness to work with me on these. Overall, if you want something different and tasty, find your way to one of their locations! read more

I absolutely loved this place! There's nothing like it around where I live, but I wish there was a location near me. Note that it can get busy and certain flavors can sell out, so try to plan and go early. This is also more of a take-and-go place. There's a few bar stools to sit at, but they were full when I stopped by early that morning. I got a few different kinds, but my favorites were the egg and sausage (savory) and triple berry (sweet). I have very fond college memories of early Saturday Kolaches runs at the Provo location and went to the American Fork shop with pretty high expectations. Luckily, they didn't disappoint and I'm happy to say the quality here is just as good as I remember. I was a little worried that the selection would be slim because I was showing up around 9 am, but they were fully stocked in all their flavors and the line wasn't too long. I love their efficient process of helping people through the line and we were eating within 10 minutes even though we had about 10 people in front of us. If you're looking for something classic, their sausage and gravy Kolache is definitely going to satisfy you, but I recommend getting two for a solid breakfast. You won't go wrong with any of their egg options, but I recommend the sausage, egg, and jalapeno. It's not too spicy but enough to have great flavor. Don't worry...the lines moves alone pretty quick. The Kolaches are what you're here for, and they're worth it. Soft, nicely filled, warm, delicious. These are not Texas pigs-in-blanket style Kolaches, but instead are the filled-roll style ones. A really, really nice treat. I like the savory ones with hot sauce. My coworkers rave about the sausage and gravy but I loved the cream cheese options (strawberry, plain, cinnamon, and peach were all awesome). Wen to Hruska's Kolaches on a whim for a little breakfast. For those that don't know kolaches are a Czech style pastry made from a puffy yeast dough. It may look like a danish but this pastry isn't flaky so no mess (I should say less mess). Pull in on either side of the building there's plenty of parking. When you walk in you're immediately hit with that fresh baked bread scent so you know you're in for a treat. A friendly staff and a display case full of flavors (both sweet and savory) sits just ahead, don't be afraid to ask questions. There's a couple small tables and a long bar against the window that's a great spot to sit for a minute and enjoy whatever you decide. I took the advice of the staff and got one savory, one sweet, and a coffee. Coffee is Kings Peak Roasters, a great local brand that pairs perfect. Sausage, egg, cheese, and jalapeño was fantastic the bread is super fluffy and the inside is full of flavor. Even though there's jalapeño it's not too spicy. It smelled so good I couldn't resist taking a bite before snapping a pic. Try it with one or all three of their delicious sauces. My favorite was called the potion, its fruity and tangy with a little kick. Go with the "No.2" if you want a little more spice. The raspberry had a little tag in the case indicating it's feature on Food Network's Diners, Drive ins, and Dives so I had to try it. This bread is fluffy like the sausage but a little sweeter with a good helping of raspberry jam in the middle. As Guy Fieri would say it was a road rockin trip to flavor town! A few tips: -Kolaches are around $3.50 for a savory and $2.20 for a sweet. Coffee was $2.50. -other drinks available in bottle (milk, water, juice, soda, and monster energy). -They stop baking at 11am and close at noon or if they sell out before then. -They bake all morning so you ask if you don't see your favorite available. I came on a Saturday morning and they had plenty of options in the display case, both savory and sweet. I'm not a fan of cream cheese so I decided to get sausage and gravy one as it had a little label stating it was seen on Food Network :). It was absolutely amazing! I've lived through years of kolache withdrawals since moving away from Provo which was, until very recently, the only Hruska's location. It was like Christmas morning to find out they were coming to American Fork and I haven't been disappointed--in fact, I think they're even less busy than the Provo location which is a major perk. I went in around 9:30 on a Tuesday morning and there was no line and plenty of selection. I've never had one I didn't like. I agree with the recommendation to get (at least) one of each--a savory and a sweet. My personal favorite is a strawberry or peach fruit one (sans cream cheese) and one of the fat, orb-like breakfast ones with some combination of egg and sausage. Keep an eye out, too, for their specialties because they do sell out fast--a cinnamony Mardi Gras king cake or a Texas BBQ brisket, for example. This is my favorite breakfast food of all time and one of the few foods, period, that will get this night owl out of bed and in the car early in the day. read more
