My husband and I are always on the lookout for a good brunch spot. So when some friends of ours recently suggested coming here, we jumped at the chance. Attached to the Knickerbocker Hotel, The Knick is definitely a hot spot for brunch in the Milwaukee area. It gets rather busy, so while not required, I would recommend making a reservation. Brunch is served on Sundays from 9am-3pm. Both my husband and I were very impressed with the variety of items offered on the brunch menu. They have traditional items (pancakes, French toast, sausage, eggs, eggs benedict, omelettes, corned beef hash, to name a few) and unique twists on those items (smoked salmon benedict, crab cake benedict, vegetarian benedict, banana pecan pancakes and more). As soon as I saw the salmon omelette, I knew I had to try it. It comes filled with salmon, cream cheese, scallions, and herb roasted tomatoes. And this is no small omelette, either. The omelettes are large and very filling. I highly recommend checking out their specialty drinks. They have some really neat concoctions. I chose to try the Man-mosa. It is similar to the traditional mimosa, but it has the additional ingredient of grapefruit juice, and it is a Pint size serving. Absolutely delicious! Fiancé and I were staying at the Knickerbocker and decided to visit the restaurant since it had rave reviews. We were seated almost immediately and greeted by our waiter. I ordered the crab hash which although good, was semi warm and I couldn't tell it had any crab in it. It tasted like I was just eating hash browns with ketchup. Fiancé ordered the corn beef hash and he said he didn't care for it. He described it as potatoes with random pieces of corn beef sprinkled in it. He thought it was an interesting take, but missed the mark. As additional sides, we ordered some Canadian bacon, sausage links, and some fresh strawberries. Overall it was ok, but I would not order again if I visited. After a wedding we attended we did come back and ordered some appetizers. We ordered the bacon wrapped scallops which was ok, sweet and spicy shrimp which tasted like bang bang shrimp from bone fish grill, and some chicken wings. Overall, everything was ok. Fantastic 30 year old restaurant near the waterfront. Interesting menu provides traditional neighborhood offerings with trendier dishes sprinkled in. The service was excellent. Feeling the need for a splash of summer? Try the strawberry pineapple salad paired with blackened fish. Fresh flavor bursting in your mouth! We were in search for a grasshopper in Milwaukee (which apparently is quite hard to find) when The Knick came up time and time again so we made the trek across town from bayview specifically for this purpose. We snagged ourselves a spot at the bar and we were instantly informed that they were out of ice cream. I mean what? You have a HUGE ice cream drink menu. I am going to make an attempt to get back sometime soon because the drinks do look phenomenal but for now the lack of product and minimal apology we all just left there bummed. Dreary Friday during the winter of no snow, wandering through the afternoon while Christmas shopping in Milwaukee, Hunger strikes! It's so close to Happy Hour but not quite, dilemma is where to go. We decide to swing through the Knick. Happy Hour starts at 3 which is a little earlier than most. It's just what we needed. The bar area isn't the largest but with a view to the lake, over the back of all the bottles of spirits, it made for a fairly lively backdrop. The Knick has a healthy amount of drinks available on the Happy Hour menu all at around $5. Beer, martinis, and margaritas. That works. What kicks it in the ass though is the Knick handcrafts all their pours. We had possibly one of the best margaritas I could have ever asked for. Lots of salt on the rim and fresh squeezed lime to boot. That's what made it. Made it really, really good! On to the food. Happy Tots - six house-made tots, chipotle aioli dipping sauce Verdict: These should be called "not your mama's tater tots" you could tell they hand make these things. Crisp on the outside and super soft mashed potato like on the inside. They were spectacular. Ginger Dusted Shrimp - fried, served with sweet teriyaki sauce Verdict: The shrimp were crisp tender and fried to perfection. Beef Satays - sriracha aioli, peanut mustard and sweet teriyaki dipping sauce Verdict - very dry, like seriously dry. There's nothing that could've saved this one. All in all the food we tried was great. The margaritas alone is the best possible reason to return. We will be back soon and try a full blown dinner. Items I saw coming out that made me drool was a Salmon dish that lay on a bed of asparagus and other well dressed greens. Being it was Friday I also saw the fish fry come out. We went for brunch on a Saturday. The place was about 1/4 full and seemed to be staffed appropriately. The atmosphere here is great: lots of art, alligator wallpaper covering, large windows. TVs available by the long, wood bar for sports. A mix of booths, tables, and hitops. Nice place. We felt the service and food didn't match up to the look, however. The server forgot to stop over to greet us; he said he forgot to check his section for new guests. Ok, fine. But then when we asked about the mimosas he didn't know. And when we said can you find out, he went to the bar and didn't ask the bartenders, but rather made up his own answer, and he was wrong. Ok, fine. Then we waited for awhile and saw the drink sitting at the bar for pickup, and our server was nowhere to be found. So, I went up and got them myself. Food was really just bland. The eggs were cooked as ordered. The potatoes, too, though they seemed to be without seasoning. I ordered the bacon extra crispy and it came out undercooked (maybe the servers fault). One thing The Knick has going for it is the OpenTable reservation system and integration with Yelp! I made a reservation for the three of us at The Knick on Sunday morning at 10:30am. We were greeted and seated at a table near the window. When you first walk in, the decor is cute and boutique-y. We ordered "Alterra" coffee (according to the menu) with cream ($3 per cup) and our server was very friendly. Our third party came in at 11 and we ordered an original benedict ($10), Smoked salmon omelet ($14), and a breakfast special, which I can't remember. Chorizo something or other for around ($12) If you ask, they will sub their eggs for egg whites -- yay! Everything was tasty. The three meals came with breakfast potatoes and mine came with toast. I have to agree with another reviewer, the toast was pretty good, especially because I don't really like toast (texture thing). The coffee was hot and it kept coming, which we like. Our cups were never empty and I even had to turn her away once! There are two small complaints. Easy on the cream cheese (it was a little much) and substituting a cup of fruit is a $2.50 up charge! That seems like kind of a lot for some fruit. Other than that, we'd eat here again and we would bring our friends here for sure. I do recommend reservations because after 11am it appeared that there was a wait for a table. Right before 12pm the hostess came and gave us the boot so that we would move from the table. I noticed how the server stood at the hostess stand and let her do the dirty work - maybe she was afraid her tip would be affected if she did it. I have no idea. I wouldn't do that to the server, but I also don't like to be rushed. What if we want to catch up with friends over brunch? P.S. We had no problem finding parking, but I'm sure it can be a challenge. They have valet parking for only $3, plus tip for the valet drivers!! read more

Closing out my year end Yelp reviews and thought I should mention The Knick. Don't let my three stars fool you. Three is A-OK. And this is A-OK. I come here a lot to kick back, relax and share a cocktail or two with the husband. Let's talk drinks. This is my reason for strolling over most of the time. Now, if you look at my pictures from here you will see a wall of Vodka. Every Vodka you can think of except ....peppercorn. Why does this matter to me. I like a bloody with a little peppery kick. Thus my three stars. The Knick often has a Bloody of the day, but it is tame. The bartender was sweet and ground in some peppercorn for me, but this isn't the same. The ice cream drinks are not what you are thinking. These are mammoth scoops of ice cream with liquor on top. See my picture for reference. They are good but not Bryants good. The food. Surprisingly good. Most is too salty for me but absolutely edible. Actually one of the best restaurants in a hotel for overall good quality and consistency. Last item I had was breakfast pasta! I was worried you would be too heavy but you were just heavenly! The scallops are also pretty good. Overall a solid go to place for the husband and I usually on a Sunday when most other establishments are closed. You will have solid service, good food and drinks. Will you be wowed, no. Ordered two Bacon Avocado burgers that were unfortunately very undercooked. Manager had an attitude when we called and then when my boyfriend went back to the restaurant to get new burgers the manager told him "it's pretty close to medium". Manager recommended next time to specify temperature. I will definitely make sure to do that because I didn't know "raw" would be your option when forgetting to choose temperature for burger. A Sunday afternoon lunch Ordered margarita. First one was so bad I took back to bar personally. I spoke to the bar tender and he remade the drink. Thank you for listening and remedying. Earned points. By burger was just plain and tough. Hard to screw up a burger but the did. Not sure I would get the tater tots again but I'm glad I tried them. Very unique twist but not worth $10. I've been living in milwaukee and originally from Chicago, a huge foodie that's never written a bad review. The Knick has the absolute worst service I have ever experienced at any restaurant. The first time, I gave them a pass because the food was okay and wanted to try it again. Second time, even worse. A waste of money! Their staff is rude and it makes it worse that the food and ambiance is mediocre. I am mad at myself for not coming here sooner! For lunch I was craving points east style wings (charred/grilled). Points East not open for lunch so I googled and found The Knick. I shared the wings stein style with a friend as well as the pork belly and Brie burger. Everything was sooooo good! I love waffle fries and their waffle fries are on point! I was impressed with this place. As an out-of-towner, I just researched places on Yelp to visit in Milwaukee. Reviews looked great and I made late night reservations online with Opentable (points!). We really wanted to sit in a fancy round booth in the bar area off to the right of the hostess stand, but they were full or dirty. Instead, we got a quaint corner spot in the restaurant, where we could not bothering other guests with our noise level. It was pretty loud in this restaurant. The décor was fun, inviting and trendy. We were looking to eat just some appetizers rather than dinner, so we had plenty of options. I believe we had a crab dip and fish tacos. There were a lot of crackers for the amount of dip you get, or should I say, we could have used more of this rich dip for all the crackers! The food was tasty, but the drinks were the best! I had a Rosemary Margarita, which sounds just sounds great. My friend also had a Pear Flower with vodka and grapefruit juice. I highly recommend having a fancy drink here with dinner! read more

I was SHOCKED with how much I enjoyed this restaurant. We checked it out on Tuesday for Downtown Dining, and made a reservation for 6:30 (unnecessary as there were TONS of open tables available). The interior is cool, if not a little... confused. There are neat glass "chandeliers" for lack of a better term, and the dark wood flooring is nice. Downtown dining offered either wings or hummus for an app, four entree options and either chocolate or carrot cake for dessert. I did wings/artichoke ravioli/carrot cake and joe did hummus/cajun tilapia/carrot cake. I seriously think places like this get skipped over when we judge and look for awesome wings. These were WAY up there with Girabaldi and JBRP for me. Seriously. The fry/sauce/grill combo is top notch - and the buffalo sauce was a perfect blend of flavorful and spicy. Joe's hummus was good, they do make it in-house, but it needed more garlic... it was pretty flat. It also only came with 4 pieces of pita which wasn't enough for the generous serving of hum. The artichoke ravioli was served with cherry tomatoes and spinach in a garlic olive oil "sauce". Joe's crusted fish was served with rice and a lima bean succotash. His limas were cooked perfectly with a little bit of firmness still there and mixed nicely with corn. The rice was rice - and the fish was fully and totally covered in cajun seasoning. He seemed to really enjoy it. My ravioli was good as well - I was hoping it would have been homemade, but unfortunately it was not. The filling was a puree instead of nice artichoke chunks, and it did not taste like much. Luckily the pre-made pasta was cooked perfectly al dente, the edges were a little chewy - yum! There was a ton of spinach and tomatoes, but the oil was pretty heavy. When I asked the server if it was made in house she said, "Well... it's cooked in house". haha. While I still had two raviolis left on my plate, she dropped off our desserts. I found this extremely off-putting, especially because the place was dead and clearly we weren't holding anybody up... maybe she'd just been cut? Joe respectfully waited for me to finish my dinner before we started in on eating our dessert... while staring at an empty plate of oil left from my dinner. This carrot cake people... oh mah gah. It was moist and delicious with a healthy thick cream cheese frosting topping - seriously to die for. Cocktails were spendy - about $10 a pop, so with a couple drinks and our meals it was about $80 with tip, still way cheaper than it'd have been otherwise to get the same menu items. First of all, one of the best happy hours in town from 3-6pm, M-F. It has great $5 foods and cocktails, my favorites being the fried chicken sliders and ginger dusted shrimp. They also have great dinner selection, priced reasonably. They offer 5-6 really creative and delicious salads as well. It is technically a hotel restaurant, but it's a boutique hotel and the food is definitely more upscale and unique than what normally comes to mind for hotel fare. It's a really spacious room with a big bar that could probably accommodate large groups with ease. We've always had great service and come away happy. It's not the most amazing food in the world, but very solid and priced well. Check it out, especially for happy hour. read more

I came here at 11am on a Saturday and it was nice that there was no wait. We were seated a pretty outdoor area and it was a relaxed atmosphere. The waitress was excessively cheerful and perky and very attentive. The mimosa/bloody mary menu is impressive - unfortunately didn't try one this time. I got the smoked salmon omelette. Slightly underwhelming... The Knick's omelets are the kind where you have a circle of egg with a puffy texture folded around the filling. I'm not a big fan of that type of texture, plus all the filling was lumped in the middle of omelette; can I get some equal dispersion? It tasted fine though and the potatoes and toast were nice. Very delicious food! We loved the crab dip which was so full of crab flavor and very cheesy! The bone in pork chop was juicy, meaty, and perfect with the tang of the mango chutney. The seared sea scallops were fresh, flavorful, and had the perfect sides of bacon brussels with bacon and a sweet and savory corn pure. Stayed at the Knickerbocker Hotel and tried out this restaurant for dinner, was so disappointed we walked out. I ordered a margarita and it took over 10 minutes to get to the table, our appetizer was Brussels sprouts and there wasn't a single whole Brussels sprout on the plate. All it was for $11 was shavings and crispy pieces of the vegetable. Not even one real piece. When my margarita finally came I noticed red stuff on the rim of the glass covered with a lime. I removed the lime and discovered old stained red lipstick marks on my glass. I wasn't wearing any. Dishes obviously weren't cleaned and the bartender covered it up with putting my lime on top of it. We got up and walked out. I wouldn't eat here during covid or any other time if you paid for my meal. Chairs were also back breaking uncomfortable. read more

I had high hopes for The Knick even though it is a hotel restaurant. Sadly I felt let down after I stopped in. The whole restaurant is very dimly lit which may be their way of hiding whether the food is good or bad. I decided upon the Truffle Burger which sounded like it would be overloaded with cheesy, truffly goodness. It looked good when it came out but the flavors fell flat. Everything needed salt. The fries would have been good but they lacked that delicious saltiness clinging to them since they weren't properly seasoned after being taken out of the fryer. The burger itself was rather tasteless as well. You could definitely tell that it was just a frozen/basic patty with nothing added to it.
