The Swingin' Door Exchange is one of the unassuming places I frequently tell people to get to and try because the food is some of the best in the Milwaukee area! Consistently busy over the years and for good reason. I've been here a few times and I've never been disappointed with the service or the food. It's a dark, cozy little restaurant bar but with so much character and history. Service is friendly and efficient. I love that the food I've ordered here has always exceeded my expectations with the seasonings and quality of ingredients used. Reasonably priced too! If you don't have a reservation, you may end up waiting for a table in the back area at a high top but it's a great opportunity to enjoy one of their great drinks in the meantime! read more

As visitors from out of state, this was the very first restaurant we visited and unfortunately it left a terrible first impression. We quite literally came here straight from the airport. To make matters worse, we had not eaten anything substantial all day and had actually looked this restaurant up weeks before our trip while researching places to eat the infamous Wisconsin fish fry, so we were really looking forward to the experience. The experience started off poorly when our party was essentially scolded by the hostess for sitting at a table that apparently needed to be cleaned for the wait list. To make matters worse, the busser laughed and joked that we were "in trouble," to which I could only respond, "Sounds like it." Not exactly the welcoming atmosphere you'd hope for as a first time visitor. The fish fry was decent our tab came out to $150 for 5 people, but the service was absolutely subpar and our tip reflected that. We also had to send back two drink glasses because they were dirty one still had lipstick on it, and another had food stuck to the inside of the glass. Overall, this was a very disappointing dining experience. Between the unprofessional treatment, lackluster service, and cleanliness issues, I would not recommend stopping here. This place is classic Milwaukee vibes on all fronts. The bar looks like it's from That 70's show, which I believe was based somewhere in WI. It's got Old Style light fixtures and beer signs along the walls. The service is super friendly and attentive. I was seated right away on a busy Friday evening. I think I came in right before a rush. I generally sit at the bar when dining solo but the bar was full. They sat me in a comfy corner that was the perfect amount of space for one. The food was superb and I would've eaten my whole plate if my belly would've let me. Don't skip the beets! I'll definitely be back! read more

This place was hopping on a Wednesday at 2pm. Host greeted us promptly and took our name and we had about a 15 minute wait to be seated. The walls had older pictures of what the place use to be and what it looked like along with older artifacts as decorations. Pretty neat to see "historically" items in a modern business. This place didn't seem super big but they did have some outdoor seating but it was raining the day we visited. They had some gambling machines if that is important to you. Our server was friendly and attentive as possible with all the busy happening. She answered our questions about the menu and the restaurant even though she was busy. She never made us feel rushed which I appreciated. We ordered a couple sandwiches...maple mustard glazed pork chop sandwich with fries and a blacken chicken, bacon and avocado sandwich with Garlicky Caesar salad. This is a Milwaukee gem. It's in a historic building which is a bonus. It's rare to go here and not have a wait. The menu is full of great choices. I would describe it as elevated pub grub. On my most recent visit we had Katie as our server. Katie was incredibly attentive and welcoming despite how busy it was. Their sandwiches are served on rolls from Sciortino's rolls. They are one of the best bakeries in the area. The crunchy chicken is breaded in cornflakes and served with a delicious Cajun ranch. This place is worth the wait. Just go! read more

I was heading to the Downer Theater after work for a movie on Friday night and of course wanted a fish fry beforehand. I surprisingly don't have many options in my "MKE - Fish Fry" collection that are near downtown, but Swinging Door Exchange was one of them. I was pressed for time, so I placed a to go order rather than dining in. I got the combo fish fry (two pieces of cod, two pieces of perch, and three fried shrimp) with potato pancakes. I was also very easily talked into the half rack rib appetizer. The ribs were good, even though I prefer sauce that's more sweet and smokey. Their sauce was on the tangy side with a tease of spice that really only became noticeable when the majority of the half rack was gone. If I were in the mood for ribs as my main meal, I'd consider getting theirs as an entree. The two potato pancakes weren't homemade; instead, they were premade hash brown patties that some other restaurants also serve with their fish frys. These were perfectly acceptable in lieu of homemade pancakes. The cod tasted great, but the breading didn't hold up very well. Either the fish itself was too wet or the two block walk back to my car allowed for condensation to wreck it or possibly both. The perch was not yellow lake perch but probably something like pike perch. Even though both kinds of fish and the shrimp were all good sized portions, $29 feels like a lot. I wouldn't say no to it, though, if I were dining in next time and avoid the extra cost of their takeout fee. Shout-out to the bartenders working that night. The bar area was absolutely packed, but both of the ones I talked to about placing my order were friendly and helpful even with being super busy. read more

We were seated right away at 11:30, but by noon, there were people waiting in line. Service was delightful, vibes were oldish but very Milwaukee. A perfect place to come with visitors on a Friday for a fish fry experience. 3 Sheeps Chaos Petter (hazy IPA, tap) $6 Hany loved this IPA. He wrote it down to get some later. Mahi mahi bites $18 Actually a little bigger than "bite" size, more like fish sticks, with about 2-3 bites each. They were ok, but Wasn't a super fan of it. Probably will not order again. Combo fish fry $31 2 cod, 2 perch, 3 shrimp. Friend said it was great, and like the shrimp best. She also liked the cod better than the perch, and said it was less fishy. Red beans and rice with andouille sausage $22 This was a special for the day, and I thought it might be a little like a jambalaya... but visually it looked more like chili, a bit soupy. The sausage looked deliciously char-grilled. Friend loved it and left no leftovers. Clam chowder $9 Should have gotten the cup... and accidentally ordered the bowl. It was big and a lot of soup. But it was goooooooooood. BYO burger $17 Love that lettuce tomato and onion is included without a fee. The 1/2 pound Angus beef was cooked a perfect medium and seasoned just right. Solid burger. They charge extra for cheese, and lactose-intolerant Hany loved not getting it. Menu says it's $15, but we were charged $17. Not sure why. We only subbed the fries for Brussels, and that's supposed to be +1. Brussels sprouts Our server raved about the Brussels, so I was hoping to get the best Brussels. I must say, they were ok, but not the best I've had (cough cough, Cloud Red). I liked that they were cut into smaller pieces, but a lot of the leaves were burnt. I can see they're going for the "crispy" or "crunchy", but imo, a little overdone. Overall, a nice experience and definitely going back, but sticking to the basics for me. read more

Date of visit: October 28, 2025 Hadn't been here in years and wanted to take advantage of a friend from out of town who hasn't really spent much time in downtown Milwaukee and so glad that I did, we had a wonderful meal! We got there early--which is key given how small this place is and how quickly it fills up. Luck was on our side as we were able to get seated right away. Speaking of right away, that was the theme of everything and let me tell you, I was here for it. Service was fast, as was the food. Starting with the chips, which were good, and the ranch, which was better. You should always start with this combo, and go cajun ranch if spice is your jam. From there I had the grilled cheese with a side Caesar salad, another winning combo! The croutons were some of the best I had ever had and the American + Cheddar marriage was fantastic. Oh my God first of all I went here today to meet my Bestie at noon. I was 15 minutes early and I walked in and I couldn't believe that the place was jampacked. Like seriously packed the whole restaurant and bar. Anyway, I did find one stool at the bar. I texted my friend letting them know place was super packed. He got there and found me at the bar, but there was no steps left on either side of me so he walked around the restaurant. Five minutes later the person to the right of me left their barstool so I called him and said hey come on over I have a stool next to me. Bartenders are awesome, super attentive, could not complain. We had bloody Mary's, beer, wine, and ordered a BLT with fries, ordered Ahi Ahi, and the homemade chips with a Cajun ranch sauce. Oh my God everything was so over the top delicious. This place is not a secret as packed busy on a Friday early afternoon. The regulars were welcoming and fun. I had to have my Lake Perch fix and Swingin' Door delivered. The perch was fresh and lightly breaded. I tend to overdo it when in Wisco and had a clam chowder as a starter. The GF had the Rueben which also served as breckie snack the next day. Holy moly what a find! Was referred to this place by another foodie and was not disappointed. Came in on a Tuesday afternoon at 4:55pm. The place was packed, 1 open seat at the bar which is all I needed. The rest of the place is pretty small, maybe 20 tables, but I was told by a local that the place is always crowded. Got myself a Spotted Cow and ordered a blackened burger and loaded Brussel Sprouts. Asked for the burger medium well and they delivered. Once in a blue moon do I get a burger with any pink in it. This one was perfect, and the juices rolling out of the burger onto my fingers were hot enough to sting! The Brussels were also crazy good! Best meal I've had in Milwaukee and one of the top 3 burgers I've ever had. Service was fast and friendly. Will come back again in a heartbeat. read more

Wow, what a little hidden gem in downtown Milwaukee. We were meeting a friend there for lunch and arrive around 11:30 on a Wednesday morning. The place was already packed. When I walked in I was hit with the smell of cabbage after being greeted by friendly staff. It was about a 20 minute wait for a seat, which was fine. The bar has plenty of craft beer options on tap and can. There is something for everyone. After being seated the menu is impressive. It was filled with daily specials. For Wednesday, it was weiner Wednesday (chili cheese, Chicago, and a bbq dog), polish sausage, etc. I ordered a chili cheese dog and a build you one 1/4 black angus burger. The hot dog was amazing! It was a kosher, all-beef hot dog with a Chicago style bun. This was a 10 out of 10. For my entree the burger was amazing and cooked to perfect temp on the grill. The did not skip on the cheese (two pieces). The homemade chips were honestly the best I've ever had. They were crispy (not stale) and seasoned very well. My girlfriend got the polish dog and it was very good as well. It's served on a locally baked roll with some homemade mustard and killer kraut. If you're in the area, you HAVE to check this little place out. The staff is super friendly and the vibes are awesome. read more

Man, if I lived in Milwaukee this place would definitely be in my regular rotation. A dimly-lit, cozy mix of history without the kitsch (it's in the ground floor of the historic Mackie Building), rustic without the dive-yness, and a solid menu of classics -- burgers, ribs, salads and more -- that are actually cooked to order. I was here on a taco Tuesday and was lucky to snag a seat at the bar, where I had a great view of the pro bartenders who never blinked while slinging a mess of strong drinks to a packed house. Seemed like there were a lot of regulars in the crowd and the place gets filled up quickly --- it's not that big, so be warned --- but even with all the bodies, my seared ahi tuna came out cooked perfectly, with efficient and no-nonsense service all-around, as I'd expect from a well-run kitchen and bar. It's open late, and there are theme nights like Weenie Wednesday and Friday Fish Fry, so I hope to come back and give those a try too. read more

I've been here before so I just assumed I would have a good lunch on a weekend. I ordered a BLT and the bacon was wayyy overcooked and hard to eat. My daughter had the chicken tenders. What was served was not a chicken tender. They take chicken breast, pound it super flat and then bread it, so they're huge, flat and overcooked. (I should have taken a picture. They should just be off the menu.) The only time our server checked on us is when I asked for a box (why I don't know other than wasting it seemed worse) and the check the were not that crowded when we were there, so I don't know what the issue was, but very disappointing visit. read more

We were happy to find parking super close to the front door and then dismayed to find out we had a 45 minute wait time with nowhere to sit or stand without being in the way of servers. We got lucky and had bar seats open up after about 5 minutes which allowed us to grab cocktails and relax. After a bit we ordered some Brussel sprouts as an appetitizer and before they could show up our table opened up. My wife chose the 2 piece cod fry with chips while I opted for the perch fry with fries. Everything was spectacular. The bartenders were jumping around each other to keep people happy at the bar and the rest of the staff get people's bellies filled with food. If you go keep in mind there are no reservations and will probably be a wait, but they will take great care of you and serve you some awesome fish! read more

Went in late after a ballgame close to the kitchen closing. Nice full place with a locals feel that was very hospitable to travelers. I love the swinging door, but what's not to love! Have been multiple times but most recently went to try out their $4 weenie Wednesday. They have a selection of hotdogs (Chicago, Western and Chili Cheese). We went with the Chicago dog as well as chips and chipotle ranch, all delicious. Sandwich was a bit on the greasier side for my liking, but nonetheless had flavor and they give you a lot for the price. The bar had great energy with excellent staff. We were asked if we'd like to eat at the bar, which we'd normally enjoy but it was a bit too crowded for us. We ordered drinks, 2 Tito's Press that came out to $24. A bit steep seeing as we ordered the same drinks down the road for $12. We were seated in the cozy dining area-very old school setting. We were greeted my our server promptly & decided to order the mahi mahi bites as an app. Delicious on their own but what really made the dish was the buffalo sauce! For my entree, I chose the ahi tuna dinner. All dinners come with soup or salad, I chose the Greek chicken orzo that tasted like a grandma made it! Such a great soup. I had the Tully Thyme and it was so good that I plan on trying to recreate it at home! I love a good French dip and a good one is hard to find so when I saw a prime dip on the menu I had to get it. It did NOT disappoint. A MUST get is the homemade chips for an appetizer. And a MUST even if you don't think you like them- is the Brussels sprouts. I'm serious- if you order them and don't fall in love, please let me know! They are off the chain good! My husband got the Reuben and I hate Reuben's and even it was good! I went for a fish fry lunch and had a very enjoyable experience. It's got a really nice pub vibe and the fish, fries and coleslaw I had were superb! I actually liked the slaw so much I ordered a separate bowl full. The fish was flaky and moist and the fries were done to perfection. Our waitress was charming and answered our questions about other, non-swimming entrees for the others in my party. Despite ordering at lunchtime, we got our food quickly, which was a shame...I could've spent hours there soaking in the warmth and pub-ness. They have a varied menu and their portions pretty much guarantee a to-go box. Going there on a cold, snowy day made this cozy eatery even better.
