For a starter, I ordered the shrimp cocktail. It was fine, though the shrimp were a bit rubbery. My entrée was the beef Wellington. The pastry outside was crisp, but the steak inside lacked seasoning and didn't have much flavor. The service was friendly but slow. There was only one server covering four or five tables at the same time, which made it hard to keep up, especially since the dining room was fairly busy. I understand it may be off-season, but one server for a full room wasn't enough. It wasn't a terrible experience, but it wasn't great either. With some improvements to seasoning and staffing, it could be much better.

All of the dishes are classics and the kitchen doesn't take any risks. Our filet mignon needed a bit more sear and the lamb ribs had a tasty mustard crust but not enough of it. Everything needed more seasoning. Especially the steamed vegetables, which were served plain and really needed something to bring out the flavor. Not a bad dining experience, but has the potential to be so much more, especially at this high end price point.

We followed it to the 18th century farmhouse in Londonderry, VT. When we got there, it was not open so I took out my phone and made a reservation on the spot for dinner in two days. Since this was the week before our anniversary, we decided to treat ourselves to this experience. The menu left us guessing at first. There was no delineation of appetizers and entrees. When it was explained to us that items at the top of the menu were considered appetizers because of the portion size, it was a little clearer. But we were still left guessing what was the portion size of these items. We thought we would start with the sourdough rye. It came piping warm with smoked butter. The smoked butter had a bolder taste than your typical sweet cream butter. He wanted the House Made Orecchiette which was a duck sausage but our server said it had a bit of spice but would be manageable. Thankfully, she asked the chef and reported back that it really was spicy so he changed his order to match mine which was the Seared Labelle Farm Duck Breast. Labelle Farm is where they sourced the duck. I love that they know where their food comes from! We both enjoyed the duck immensely. It came with Solo's very own farm fresh vegetables. For dessert, we ordered the cheesecake with blueberry compote. Someone brought it with a candle and said, "happy birthday or anniversary." Nice that they put a candle on the cheesecake but I did say it was our anniversary on the reservation. I guess that kinda ruined it for me that she didn't bother to look what special event we were celebrating. The meal was lovely. The farmhouse setting was quaint. You hear all the footsteps of the hardwood floors whenever someone walked. My only critique was that it was VERY warm inside. There was one window that was slightly cracked open but no breeze was felt. It was so warm that we had to ask for ice in our water. I think our meal would have been more enjoyable if we weren't sweating our way through dinner. I guess 18th century farmhouses didn't have air conditioning.

Hubby reported his roast beef sandwich was great although the roast beef looked overcooked to me. What was dubious, however, were the French fries. They had a sort of mealy texture and a very odd taste--I thought they used coconut oil to fry but hubby thinks they coated them with baking soda, then fried. Either way I wasn't a fan.

The inside is charming and has that old wooden bar smell that I like. This would be a great place to grab a drink on a cold winter day. Very Scottish, lol. We were seated immediately for our 6:30 dinner reservation. We each ordered appetizers, which took nearly 45 minutes to arrive, even the cup of soup. Mozzarella sticks were nothing special, the cheddar tomato soup was really tasty. My mother in law loved the cock-a-leekie soup, and my father in law liked his scotch egg. It took another 20-25 minutes for our entrees to arrive. For a restaurant that closes at 8 pm, it was surprising at how long the food took to come out. They must have a very small kitchen. Everyone in our group liked their meal. My "loaded vegetarian baked potato" was just a full cup of sour cream and cheese on top of a potato with lukewarm broccoli on the side. A bit disappointing, with there were at least chives or seasoning. Basically nothing else vegetarian on the menu so this was what I was stuck with. Desserts were good, especially the sticky toffee pudding. I would call this place a step above average in the area, but service leaves a lot to be desired.

The positives: the portions were huge, wait staff was friendly. Apart from it having pretty bright lighting and being a little noisy... the interior is fairly charming being that it's a great old house and you can still see elements of its former life. The less positive-- I didn't care for the food, nor did my co-diners. The meatloaf was pretty dry. The burger looked like it was just a 'bubba burger' or some other mediocre frozen variety. The chicken parm was a huge piece of chicken but the sauce had an odd taste-- almost like it had a bit too much red wine in it or it wasn't cooked down enough-- so it was sort of sour? The soup was ok. It was extra cheesy. We would have traded in some of the cheese for some more broccoli. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't great.
