Recently moved to Charlestown and trying out local restaurants. This place didn't disappoint. My son and I sat out on the deck and enjoyed the view of the local area. I ordered the Alfredo with shrimp. It came with a very nice side salad. The main course was delicious and well presented. Later during the meal, one of the owners checked in with us and we struck up a friendly conversation. Will definitely be returning. read more

There are not a lot of options in this area so we headed for Sumner House. I wouldn't choose to go here again if I could find some other option. The positives: the portions were huge, wait staff was friendly. Apart from it having pretty bright lighting and being a little noisy... the interior is fairly charming being that it's a great old house and you can still see elements of its former life. The less positive-- I didn't care for the food, nor did my co-diners. The meatloaf was pretty dry. The burger looked like it was just a 'bubba burger' or some other mediocre frozen variety. The chicken parm was a huge piece of chicken but the sauce had an odd taste-- almost like it had a bit too much red wine in it or it wasn't cooked down enough-- so it was sort of sour? The soup was ok. It was extra cheesy. We would have traded in some of the cheese for some more broccoli. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't great. read more

A lovely restaurant setting in an old house. Dining in several different rooms. Our server was wonderful and I wish I could remember her name, but I was part of a party of 10 and I had very little contact with her. But the service was wonderful. The food.........not so much. I started with a salad and while it was Fresh, it was very small. Hardly worth the effort. I ordered a stuffed haddock as my entree and it was delicious. Stuffed with crab and shrimp and really very well made. But the complete lack of attention to the side dishes and vegetables really ruined the experience for me. My baked potato must have been a day old and barely reheated. The butter wouldn't even melt on it. Others at the table said the same thing. And they served Brussels sprouts. I like my vegetables pretty crunchy. I don't overcook by any means. But these were served almost raw. I believe they were blanched but not cooked. And again, it was not just me. One lady in our party collected the leftover sprouts and said that she was taking them home to cook them. The menu had burgers and sandwiches on it. Maybe I would stick to that next time. When I asked for utensils she shrugged and said they don't have any... She told me if I wanted utensils I can go buy them at the dollar store across the street. I didn't get her name but she has a terrible attitude. Edit 3/6/25: Second negative experience with same hostess, Autumn. I'll spare you the details. While service was fine and the atmosphere seemed good the food was horrible. I've tried this place a few times always wanting it to be good but sadly it never is. If you want a beer it's a great place to go sit at the bar but if you want good food you'll have better luck at the gas station next door. read more

We had The Sumner House cater my wedding: 09/24/22 Let me tell you that Ryan is GREAT & so is his staff. I got engaged in May of 2021 & started my search for a caterer. The venue I chose suggested using The Sumner House. Immediately, Ryan replied to my inquiry & so began the hundreds of emails & phone calls to quote the wedding catering & rehearsal dinner. Their menu & options are MORE than fair. I had received other quotes that were triple, if not quadruple what his quote was for up to 100 wedding guests. The food is AMAZING. I highly suggest the steak tips. The mashed potatoes are buttery & awesome. They offer fresh seasonal vegetables. You also get your choice of (2) desserts with the entrees. The apple crisp & assorted cookies were a big hit after dinner & through the night as the wedding & dancing went on. We had the prime rib, stuffed pork & chicken lasagna for the rehearsal dinner. OHHH MY GOODNESSSS it was ALL SO GREAT! Their cheesecake & chocolate ganache cake for desserts are incredible. My father loved the chocolate ganache cake so much that he had 2 pieces & had to refrain from a 3rd. The bar gets very busy with the locals, especially on Friday & Saturday nights. In the summer they do offer outdoor seating. The building is near or about 200 years old, I believe. read more

When you place an order online you shouldn't have to wait 10 minutes while the lady tries to figure out where your food is, she went back and forth from the kitchen I don't know how many times- the whole time my food was on the rack. The salad is listed with toasted walnuts yet they weren't toasted and I had to try to pick them all off because I have an allergy to uncooked walnuts. The sweet potato fries were soggy (sitting in a closed container while being looked for probably played a part in this.) Haven't been there in awhile and won't go back soon. read more

This was our first time here. We were greeted when we walked in and were seated right away. Then we waited and waited and waited some more for someone to ask if we wanted drinks. My husband finally got up and walked toward the bar to see if someone was going to help us. Took a bit, but no apology when our waitress finally arrived. Not expected, but would have been nice. We got our drinks and placed our order. I ordered a salad and my husband ordered chicken parmeson with a side salad. My salad was good..very fresh. The chicken parmeson, however, was just okay. The chicken was burned on the edges, the noodles over-cooked and the sauce had no flavor. He didn't get the side salad, so we asked to have it to go. Dessert was creme Brule and it was fantastic. We had another long wait while waiting for them to come take our money. I had time to write all this while waiting. The food here is excellent, and the appetizer and finished with dessert. Unfortunately, it was extremely loud in the restaurant. We got the spill over from the bar in the front of the restaurant. People were yelling across the bar, and it was very distracting. We started out with basic cocktails. They were made correctly, not too strong, not too weak. We ordered the chicken pesto pizza for a starter. Please don't miss this when you place your order. It's wonderful My friend got scallops, and I ordered the chicken special. They were both outstanding. I ordered the creme Brule for dessert. Hands down the best one I have ever had, and such a generous portion. We planned to add this restaurant to our favorites until... I asked for no sauce or onions on my steak. It came with both...I'm sure if our waitress had a notepad to write our orders on it would have had a better chance of being correct. I sent it back...the chef wiped the sauce off and sent it back out. One bite later I took it to the kitchen . They asked if I wanted a new one...I said yes. 30 minutes later I got my plate back...now with a cold baked potato and cold veggies but a perfectly cooked and delicious steak. Our tablemate ordered the steaktips in a bourbon sauce...bottled BBQ sauce and no taste of bourbon. She really did not care for them so treated her dog who accompanied us to them and I shared half of my steak with her. My husband's meal was delicious. read more

My husband and I decided that since we were only two for we chose to go out for dinner. The restaurant was serving a buffet which was well stocked and kept warm. The Turkey was moist and delicious. The dressing was dry and reminded me of Stove Top stuffing ...not very tasty!! Sides of mashed potatoes, yam broiled , string beans were good. Desserts were abundant and tasted very good. The only example worth my time is today when my waiter ignored me on three separate occasions when I asked for a full order of fries and instead she only gave us a half order. It was not busy but our waitress Kelli was very slow and disappeared multiple times. We got appetizers long before anything to drink. Finally had to ask for water (as other tables had glasses of water). She bought us 6 red plastic cups and a pitcher to pour it ourselves! One dinner was incorrect. I had the spinach/pesto ravioli and it looked like barf with no taste. The others ate quesadillas which were fine. We were on two checks but they added 20% tip to both checks!!!! When I objected she said it was because we were a party of 6. I don't mind the tip IF we received any service, but she did NOT provide any. I then realized she knew she didn't have to wait on us cause she was going to get the automatic tip anyway! BEWARE read more

Based on my N=1, The Sumner House is my ideal restaurant. It reminds me of Luke's Diner from "Gilmore Girls". There is a warmth to the place that is welcoming, kind-hearted, and happy. The food was amazing (try the maple bourbon steak tips) and the staff was amazing. Quite a few locals came in while I was there and the conversations add to the charm of this gem. Ordered haddock stuffed with shrimp and scallops in a bechamel sauce for dinner. Our first time at the restaurant, and our last time. When the plate came there was burnt, dried on 'something' on the rim, the fish was so dried out, the stuffing was dry breading with no scallops and a tiny shrimp out of a can. The entree was a very old leftover that was inedible and crusty. The side of mashed potato was cold, old, and bitter tasting. Couldn't eat them either. The house was dingy, layer of dust on cupboard, and cobweb on the wall. Very disappointed. read more

When I went to pay they asked me if I wanted change and I said yes. wouldn't give me back my full change amount claiming they don't do coins. I guess that was her way of forcing a tip. Very friendly environment with awesome bartenders and staff. The food is fresh and prepared very well, and they keep you on your toes by changing the specials everyday (always something new to try). Stopped by for brunch this past Sunday - it was ace! Hollandaise to die for - lemony buttery goodness. Mimosas were delicious, and the prosecco with peach puree was lovely too. Service was very good, looked like maybe just the one waitress who managed us very well. The deck was open, we sat there, it was great! Must remember to come back here more often and check out their live music. We didn't sit at the bar but I'd forgotten how nice it is - the bar has individual USB ports for charging your phone while you drink. I have seen this in airports and larger cities, but afaik the Sumner House is the first in the NH/VT valley to have this amenity, which is pretty cool. read more

First thing was the atmosphere. My guest and I arrived at 7:30, (they close at 8:15) and immediately felt rushed by the waitress. The next thing was the lighting was very bright in there did not feel like a cozy dinner atmosphere . We proceeded to order a couple of appetizers did bruschetta and the cheddar cheese bites when they arrived I tasted what was supposed to be the cheddar cheese bites and immediately could tell that it was not cheddar cheese and that they were frozen the bruschetta was not authentic as it was basically just bread with some melted cheese on it and a couple of slices of very thinly sliced tomato and a balsamic glaze drizzle . When the waitress came back to our place our order I pointed out that the cheese bites were not cheddar and she proceeded to tell me "well, that's what the package says", so I said that means they are frozen and she said yes . I ordered the bourbon mustard seared salmon with the mashed potatoes and a caesar salad my dinner guest ordered the steak salad . Next the entrees came I must say it looked pretty good on the plate but was definitely a very 1970s garnish type with just a Twist of lemon on the top I tasted the mashed potatoes which had absolutely no seasoning no butter and were obviously instant potatoes because they did not have that creamy potato texture that real potatoes have the bourbon mustard salmon was it had an off taste and not much bourbon mustard because it was no flavor to it at all the steak salad that my guest had was just a salad with some shaved steak on it my Caesar salad was essentially some cut-up Romaine with some shredded mozzarella on it and a couple of croutons not really a good Caesar salad I probably will not go back to this place as they kept rushing us to get out of there because they were closing in a few minutes and you could tell the waitress was not very friendly not very outgoing did not come back and check on us to see if everything was okay all in all not a very good experience will probably not go back . read more

Beautiful place, excellent friendly staff and most of all great food. The bar is comfortable and warm. We have gone in several times during the week to the bar which is always nice. For some reason it's frequently not busy and it's too bad because it so nice. People just haven't discovered the little gem in our backyard here in Charlestown. read more

Had dinner Thursday here. This restaurant has such a nice vibe to it. The people are always friendly and always willing to accommodate. The old world charm of the house is what drew me in the first time. The food and staff is what brings us back. We are in the neighborhood once a month, so we try to stop by as much as we can. They have a bar that's almost always busy as well as outdoor patio, and catering room upstairs. Because its an old house the dining rooms are a little more quiet. Casual attire is usually worn, but people do always look nice. Food is fantastic! Chicken is always juicy, has been cooked perfect every time... that is saying a lot!!! There mozzarella sticks are amazing!! There 3 big wedges of deep fried cheese. My husband and I share them. They take reservations, and it's a good idea to do it, especially on Saturday, they have a pasta station and it gets very busy. read more

This was an excellent choice for dinner on a Saturday night. You have a variety of seating options: the deck, which has tables with umbrellas, bar area with high top tables, at least two other rooms off the bar area with regular tables. There was a room where on Saturday nights they have a live pasta station where you can customize your veggies, sauce, proteins, and pasta. Gluten free pasta available! That room may be a dining area on other nights. The options on the menu have great variety in all courses. The waitstaff was prompt and friendly, and the hostess, who could have well have been the manager or one of the owners, came by halfway through the meal. She gave a valediction as we walked out as well at the end of the meal. The chef cooking at the pasta bar has great customer service skills. My twelve year old son says that the food was excellent and the staff energized. I would recommend you try this place. Enjoy! read more

Sweet little local restaurant in the heart of Charlestown NH. Hostess was welcoming and waitstaff were friendly and attentive. We were looking for simple stick to your ribs food after a long day. We definitely got what we were looking for. Wife ordered chicken Marsala and I got the chicken parm. Fresh, tasty and delicious. Dessert was the the star of the evening.
