The towns in Southeast Vermont have a lot (and I mean a LOT) of character. The variety of stylish restaurants with a culinary spin that dot the downtown districts add to the Vermont quintessential feel. And Wunderbar definitely is part of that local charm. On the Thursday night before Labor Day weekend, we made a reservation at Wunderbar in Bellows Falls. Upon arriving, we were seated quickly. Service was overall fantastic and we were super impressed with the cocktails and food, leaving happily satisfied and stuffed at the end. I can't think of anything we ordered that we didn't like, though, of course, there were some favorites: Alpine Negroni and Smoking Gun cocktail were delicious. We LOVED the Ahi Tuna Tostadas, Wunder Wings, and Roasted Carrots - and hands-down our favorite of the night was the Miso Mussels. We weren't sure we ordered enough between the 3 of us, but portions were overall done well and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience from start to finish. I truly can't wait to come back to Wunderbar the next time I'm visiting the area. Wunderbar is such a gem in Bellows Falls! The atmosphere is this perfect mix of cozy, artsy, and a little bit unexpected--in the best way. It feels like the kind of spot you stumble into once and immediately decide you're coming back. I had the Marsala Fried Chicken and WOW. Crispy, juicy, and packed with flavor--hands down one of the best fried chicken dishes I've had anywhere. The Marsala twist makes it unique and completely unforgettable. I also tried the Spicy Bazaar cocktail. and it was phenomenal. Balanced heat, bold flavor, and the kind of dish that makes you stop mid-conversation just to appreciate how good it is. The service was warm and genuine, the drinks were creative, and the whole experience felt like a special night out without being pretentious. Wunderbar absolutely lives up to its name. One of our favorite places for date night! We've come to Wunderbar quite a few times now and it's truly a treat each time. There's something about the decor and style that transports you to a different world. The servers are personable and welcoming which makes dining here an even more delightful experience. Their cocktail selection is unique and it's always difficult to choose which one I want to try! Same problem for the food, but these are good dilemmas to have. We usually go with the disco fries as one of our plates because that curry is oh so good. I make sure to leave room for the clementine cake for dessert because it's to die for! read more

Wunderbar is the most chic and beautiful spot and consistently the best food and drinks in Bellows Falls. We've been going to Wunderbar for a long time now and they always impress! Last night we ordered an array of food and drinks- and it was all on point! I got the Gee and Tee, which is a fun play on a gin and tonic. They also offer some fun mock tails in case you don't want to drink! For food- we ordered the kale cesar salad which the dressing was to die for! We also got the mussels and just kept dipping our bread in the broth. Salmon cakes, elote corn, and spicy fried chicken were all also enjoyed thoroughly! Our server Zoe was super friendly and lovely! I can't believe little old Bellows Falls has a restaurant this good! I grew up in the area, and my mom had been raving about her visits here. I was skeptical. I was in town visiting so we got a reservation to sit outside and WOW this was so good. We had: Elote - Mexican street corn. Flavors were just right. They served with lime too, which was great as a lot of places seem to forget that. Carrots with carrot top pesto - pretty good. It was a LOT of carrots, so I might recommend this for groups larger than 2. Flavors were solid. Some of the bigger carrots didn't get cooked through all the way, but the smaller carrots were perfect. Tomato fried rice - this was delicious! Lots of scallion and ginger. The tomatoes are local and in season so it was a wonderful celebration of them. This dish is pretty much perfect, and would just be perfecter with some egg- and our server totally agreed! Fish tacos - these were probably my favorite. They were SO good with so much fish. The price was extremely reasonable as well at $4/taco. The cilantro crema was yum. Sticky wings - very good. Nice combination of flavors like lime and fish sauce. Mmm mm. Clementine cake - this is a house specialty, and it was honestly superb. It tastes like a grown up chocolate orange you might have at Christmas. It's completely housemade. It's small, but the flavors are on point and after stuffing yourself with tapas you don't need a huge dessert anyways. Painted lady cocktail - this drink was so interesting, and so good. All their drinks looked super interesting though. Cocktails are $10, which I'm surprised to see in little old Bellows Falls - quick aside, I remember in 2016 when the "$10 cocktail" became a THING in DC. Now I live in Portland ME where $14 cocktails aren't uncommon (ouch). Price: you get what you pay for here. For tapas the portions are very large, and nothing felt TOO overpriced. The quality is good and they use a lot of seasonal, local ingredients. Service was absolutely lovely, and the tables are well distanced so we felt very safe the whole time. They have lots of options for various diets (vegan, gluten free, etc.). This is truly a spot for everyone! read more

Had a most excellent dinner here with VT family while visiting from out of state. The restaurant is super cool inside. I felt like I was in a trendy NYC place. Love the eclectic decor! The menu is also super varied with plates of all different sizes and flavor profiles. We tried a range of things and we loved them all. A lot of interesting flavors and combinations. The pros: Nice atmosphere, nice wait staff, good communication for reservation, interesting cocktails. The cons: THE FOOD. My husband NEVER refuses to eat a dish he orders and he couldn't eat 2 of the 3 items he ordered. The soup of the day, a potato soup, turned out to be the equivalent of a horribly salty thick sauce you might have as a gravy on a meat. The kufteh was "bad". I didn't taste it but my husband couldn't eat it, and as mentioned above, he hated to leave over food out of principle. His ahi tuna tostadas, although they looked good, weren't seared and didn't taste good (although the tuna wasn't spoiled). My farro dish was edible only because I separated the farro from the thick sauce-? Vegan ricotta- and ate the farro and vegetables alone. If you're going here to drink - it's fine. Came here for a family get together, Saturday night peak hours. We had an reservation but still had to wait for about 20 minutes while another group left. The vegetarian bao buns were 10/10. Warm flavorful and with a unique texture and consistency. The "jazzy fries" were bland and a bit mushy, but seemed to impress others in my group. For entrees we got the portobello Mac and cheese, an incredibly rich dish that tasted equal parts butter and mushroom. My gf got the fish tacos which were a tad underwhelming, and small for the price. Good change of pace for the area, drinks were solid and strong. I would come back again, come here if you are looking to change things up in the Keene: Brattleboro area. Food came out in weird increments, indicative of a small kitchen. Love love love this place!! Perfect stop before heading to Ludlow. It's like visiting your eclectic wealthy Aunties and brings back so many memories with the crystal glasses and china. The cocktails are exquisite and worth a the $. The salad is more than enough for two. Most dishes are small plates but we still took home leftovers. The chicken masala is perfect. First visit. What a great venue on the square in Bellows Falls. Great beer, craft cocktails, decor and friendly staff. Stopped in after a day of shopping, grabbed some drinks and a large warm pretzel. My only recommendation would be to add some string lights in the center of the bar area, it was a bit dark. Needed my pbone light on to read the menu, perhaps just my age! Bottom line..great place and I wish them lots of success. read more

Last year we went to Wunderbar on our first night in Bellows Falls. We loved it so much that after spending the next day exploring the area, we decided to go back rather than try a new place. This year we brought friends and, again, the meal was so wonderful the first night that we went back the second. And we plan to do the same next year. DO NOT MISS the bao buns, chicken and kale salad! We also loved the fish tacos, Brussels sprouts and the creative drinks. One of us was not drinking and was really impressed with the mocktails. Sure the prices might be a little higher than what you're used to for the portions in the area, but you cannot deny the skill and care that are put into each menu item. I had the Buffalo Plaid, which was a decent New Englandy riff on a Lion's Tail. But I need to talk about the Spicy Masala Fried Chicken and Porter Flip. The chicken was the perfect bite of deboned thigh meat, so tender you could have told me it was mashed potatoes, wrapped in chicken skin. Perfectly crispy without a hint of greasiness, and just the right amount of heat. I wish I was hungrier, or else I would have ordered more food. But I'm begging you, if you come here, please end your meal with a Porter Flip. Just a perfectly decadent cocktail to end a meal. I'm from out of state, but I will be coming back to try more of the food and get another one of those delicious flips. read more

Wow! What a find! This small restaurant/bar serves small but substantial dishes in a sort of tapas style. My wife and I split 4 dishes and left extra-sated. Each dish was fresh and flavorful. Best food I've had in some time. There was a fine selection of craft beers on tap-also very on point! The atmosphere was also great- informal but beautifully decorated and spacious.
