A lot of times in local places like this you'll get many local patrons that flood yelp with five star reviews, but they won't be warranted. There have been many times where I've tried restaurants that had a lot of stars, but the local people are just inflating the reviews. - this is not one of those places. The food here is absolutely phenomenal. The speakeasy vibe even adds to the ambience. The drinks are strong yet not too strong. This restaurant is so good that I am now planning a trip with my wife and my friends to come back up to this area to ski just so I can bring them here and have their mind blown with how great the food is here. if there was an option to give six stars, I would! read more

So we heard about this place on one our trips to Keene. First time we ventured over, we picked a day when they were closed. Second time, we just stopped in for drinks. Third time I stopped in I had dinner. The bartenders and wait staff dress in 20's attire and the place has that prohibition feel to it. They make high-end cocktails but I usually stick with a gin and tonic. The menu is limited but the meal portion was generous. I had the chicken fried chicken. It was a huge piece of breaded chicken over mashed potatoes and asparagus topped with a traditional white gravy. Very tasty. What a fantastic place to enjoy the evening! A speakeasy that looks like a shoe store! The decor, ambiance and service is top notch. My husband and I enjoyed a few appetizers, entrees and I ended my night with an affogato. Live music was playing until 9 so I'm glad we got to hear about 30 minutes of it. Call ahead to be put on the wait list. This place was jamming even after we left at 10pm. We will be back here next year. Nice job Sole's! We were passing through Keene, NH on the way back from some Vermont leaf peeping and Keene was pretty much the only sign of civilization on the back road highways on our way home. Keene is a college town which feels sort of like Amherst, MA with a much lower GPA. All of the restaurants in Keene felt kind of cookie cutter, like what the guy on bar rescue turns restaurants into ... not our jam. At a nearby brewery, we asked the dude behind the counter where a good spot to eat would be. He said 'Speakeasy' and we grimmaced a bit because we've been to some pretty lame ones. Soles was actually Speakeasy theme done right. A supposed 'shoe store' ... outside has signs on it which say it was closed due to Prohibition. The windows are blacked out and it looks fairly non-descript and modern on the outside. You pick up the payphone outside and someone picks up and asks how many pair of shoes you want. (the # of diners). We had no reservation on a Saturday night around 7 p.m. and luckily, the wait was only 10 minutes. I'd recommend making a reservation in advance. After 10 minutes, we got a text and they buzzed us in. Inside, the hostess and some waitresses are dressed in 1920's sparkling dresses and vintage hair styles. There is 1920's music being played throughout and red lighting gives it a warm and vintage vibe. We chose to sit at the bar. They also have couches and high tops. The theme is done right and it feels like a Disney restaurant from Disney Springs. Things are immaculately clean, it has a somewhat cheesy in a fun way theme and the staff are 100% committed to their parts as 1920's service industry folks. The meatloaf is as good as they say. It's 3 thick pieces and mashed potatoes ... you won't leave here hungry! The portions are enormous. It felt like eating a burger covered in real bacon crumbles with BBQ sauce, onions and melted cheddar. Likely one of the best meatloaf dishes I've ever eaten. The gal had a salad with grilled chicken which was also phenomenal. Well seasoned, huge portion again and the dressing was fantastic. She also had a side of french fries, which tasted how I remember McDonalds fries tasting as a kid. Perfect! Not sure if they fry in beef fat ... but something gave these fries an extra bit of taste making them amazing. Our drinks were also great. They know how to make a cocktail here! I had the Brandy Alexander which was made from scratch with freshly grated nutmeg on the top. I cannot imagine anyone who wouldn't enjoy this place. It is fun, cozy ... the food is amazing ... the staff is top notch and it has a nice 'buzz' inside ... almost like it was a sound affect of people laughing, talking and having a good time. I highly recommend this place for a memorable night. The prices aren't cheap but you more than get your money's worth. read more

Referred by hotel concierge. No reservation required for party of two dining on a Saturday at 530pm. This restaurant is a "must see" if visiting Keene. They are completely committed to the speakeasy theme. It was a warm ambiance from the moment we walked inside, after making it past the hidden entrance. Geraldine was our server, so genuinely engaging and wonderful - encouraging us to make a '20's themed name to play along. The meatloaf was hands down delicious. The pickles were a bit on the salty side, so just be aware. Drinks were delicious, and the service was incredible. With the decor and the music you are in the speak easy era...and the service and the servers decked out in vintage era clothing...beautiful. Oh yes...the food. As a lover and connoisseur, l wondered about meatloaf..well one of the best of my 79 years...amazing. The gravy also good but would have liked a bigger portion of awesome mashed potatoes. My wife who rarely eats a hamburger said her's was one the best too. Other in the party had a delectable salad with blue cheese and bacon. Oh what fun! Pick up the phone outside the restaurant and explain how many people would like to buy a pair of shoes. You will be admitted to the traditional decor of the 1920s including staff in period costumes and hair styles. The food was delicious with very generous portions. The staff were amazingly nice. Don't sleep on this adorable speakeasy in Keene, NH! I'm a traveling healthcare worker and I went in for a solo dinner after a long work week. I had the Sole Fashioned and their special, which was a pumpkin and butternut squash ravioli with a browned butter sage sauce with beautifully caramelized onions and goat cheese . It was AMAZING! They serve it with a spoon and I ate every morsel of that sauce. I sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly and helpful. We were excited about trying this place, but when we went in, the only tables available were high tables, and my wife just had spine surgery. We asked about lower tables, and the hostess said it would be a 20 minute wait. We said we would wait, and we were content to stand while we waited, but she said we would have to sit on the high chairs while we waited. Don't know why I haven't written a review earlier. My wife and I are regulars and really like the place. I'm glad to see it has so many positive reviews because they are quite well-deserved. Quite a number of the staff are refugees from another restaurant in town that we used to frequent, but when they disappeared from there, we noticed that the quality had gone way down and decided to find where they had gone. Restaurants involve a lot of capital expenses and inventory issues and other things, but ultimately it's their people that make or break it, so let this be a lesson to those who don't appreciate good staff in a way that makes them want to stay. We found this Speakeasy hiding on a side street, run by staff who were happy and inspired, and we never looked back. The prices run a little higher than some other places. I think that must filter out the crowd that's just looking to get drunk at the cheapest possible price. I've talked to a number of people about what they like there and the answers are pretty consistent (as I think these reviews will attest to as well): good food, good service, and an overall nice run of people moving in and out. Patterned after the speakeasy concept from the Prohibition era, this apparent shoe store is not a "bar" but a "B.A.R." (Boots, Athletic shoes, and Ruby--or sometimes rubby--slippers). The exterior is unassuming, easy to overlook. It survives on word of mouth to find out how to get there, which should tell you something. The shoe store idea builds on a bit of local history relating to the Parrish Shoes company, a place that is advertised at billboard scale on the side of a nearby building but really only ever existed in the original Jumanji movie, which featured exterior scenes from downtown Keene. A large portrait of Robin Williams in a place of reverence on one interior wall offers subtle confirmation of the fanciful movie origin of the theme. The lighting is a dim, orange glow, which gives it a relaxed, escapist feel. My wife and I think of it like going onto the holodeck on Star Trek Next: an immersive experience that transports you to another place and time, sufficient to leave the troubles of the outside world far away for a little while. Bathrooms are shared with the rest of the building down a hall that is garishly lit with fluorescent lights. Following in the Star Trek theme, it's like "calling for the arch" (another Star Trek reference) to go there. But other than that one glaring detail, the illusion is mostly solid. read more

I like the Sole Burger or chicken sandwich and replace the house made chips (no fries here) for a side Caesar salad. First time I remember a wonderful brioche bun. Last time not so luscious bun. An excellent restaurant. It is a unique place and stands out as the top restaurant in the area. The food was delicious. The waitresses in their period dress were cordial and efficient. We never lacked attention but it was not overbearing. The decor and style made it a special experience. What a fun dinner! Sole's has a speakeasy theme which is accented by the interesting décor as well as the attire of the staff. The space is cozy and clean with very interesting era-appropriate items wherever I looked. My food was absolutely top notch, from the expertly made cocktail to the appetizer and entrée. As others have said, the meatloaf was exquisite! Best of all was the attention of the staff, from the hostess greeting me at the door to the genuinely happy (and beautiful) bartender, making sure my experience was as good as could be. I highly recommend you checkout Sole's if you have not been there yet. The food and drinks are really amazing! The environment is really unique and I've enjoyed my numerous visits there whether there is live music or not. This restaurant has the latest open kitchen out of all restaurants in Keene, as I learned one night & was grateful that Sole's was able to provide. For anyone missing their fish prepared as they do down South, then this is the only place I've been to in New England where you can get blackened fish, which is very tasty and prepared correctly. Awesome experience and food. I went out on a limb and ordered the meatloaf (haven't had meatloaf in 15 years.) It was delicious!! The charcuterie board was local and fresh, hit the spot. Best thing was the drinks! I asked our server if the bartender was a legit mixologist or a "bartender." She was 100% legit!! I told her I liked non peaty whisky and bourbon to make whatever she wanted, on or off the menu to surprise me. Didn't disappoint the drink was amazing. We have been here twice now. Both times drinks and food were very delicious. Starts out with the phone outside to call in and give the password. Then they slide the peep hole open to let you in. Awesome touch in the spirit of speakeasys. Greeted by very friendly and accommodating staff each time, always a plus. Specialty drinks have been tasty and well poured. Covid has played with the supply chains and they may not have exactly what you want but they will have a substitute for sure. The food...it started with the french onion dip which sounds pedestrian but was amazing! With fresh made chips to go with it. Have had the risotto, cheese plate and a few other items which all have been fantastic.
