I love this bar. It never fails me. Drinks are poured as they should be. Obviously the owner is from a better time when owning a bar was about more than just penny pinching. Bars like this are meant for one thing. Drinking and laughter. If you want something more on the classy side, go elsewhere. If you want to drink your worries away, you won't spend too much doing it here, and the people are always interesting. I mean it's Keene for gods sake. Stories are as plentiful as the booze that backs them.

Love coming on Tuesday's for 1$ beers. The renovation looks awesome. Nice bartenders and now they have food. I enjoy coming here.

Wanted to try something new while staying in Keene between ski days. Given the current cold snap,…read moreit was right around the corner from where I was staying. I was solo so sat at the bar. Bartender didn't impress. Not sure he was experienced. Give away was putting olives on martini containing grapefruit juice, not mention an even number of olives (bad luck). The menus were fancy and I ordered a shaved roast beef sandwich with au jus. Shaved roast beef was on par with Steak-umms. French fries were your typical bagged fries. All in all it was ok at best. Was hoping for a little more given the quality of the other restaurants in the area.

My partner had the short rib ravioli which was also excellent. We are whiskey/bourbon drinkers and the one thing that whiskey/burboun drinkers like in their old fashioned type drinks are single, large ice rocks and not the little broken ice chips that easily dilutes your drink. These are so easy to make yourself. Just buy an ice tray that makes them. The other thing whiskey/bourbon drinkers like in their drinks are the bourbon cherries and not just the plain maraschino cherries. Just two easy recommendations to elavate the experience. The staff was also very friendly.

BUT for me, a non-drinker, I gotta say I bristle at being charged for refills on a diet coke that is fountain-generated, not bottled. No one does that. To find that a soda + 3 refills over the evening added $10 to my meal seems petty and excessive. And there are a lot of things I tolerate in service staff, but my one key rule is "never make it my fault". The bartender tried to defend it saying that some people come and and only order a soda, as if that explains why it's OK to overcharge me. I'd had tacos, soup, and fries (plenty of food, but I ordered extra to have leftovers for another day) so I was NOT the people who were just ordering sodas. Make the policy 'free refills with entrees' if you want, but don't try to justify overcharging me because of someone else's bad behavior as if that is somehow justice. I'm not the keeper of these people who are wanting something cheap, though honestly I bet if they're doing that, they're hurting, and a little compassion isn't a terrible thing if the bar isn't full. But it plays into a worry I always have. As a non-drinker who goes to bar, I always feel imposter syndrome, like I am not supposed to be there at all. I am very self-conscious. Bartender friends have tried to reassure me that they welcome having a few people come in who are the same personality when they arrive as when they depart. But It's hard to shake the imposter thing and this little policy screams "no, you really are an imposter, and we don't want you". Unless there is something really egregious, I tend to try to compensate by ordering food or leaving a tip that honors the fact that I'm ordering something cheaper than others do, that I'm taking up space that what I think of as "paying customers" might take. But the truth is, I make sure I'm paying as much as them and there is not a good reason in the world for me to be treated as some kind of moocher, cheater. And if I'm doing the offsetting, that's MY choice. But if you have a pricing scheme that is not competitive with sodas in every other restaurant in the entire known universe, expect me to care. Also, it very much complicates the social interaction with the bartender, who can't just top off my drink when it's low but has to keep asking if I want "another". I wondered why she didn't just do it but never quite thought to ask and only realized when I saw the bill. I had hoped I would perhaps become a regular here, but I think not. It screams, "please don't come back". I told the bartender and she was not apologetic or sad, just kind of shrugged like fine with her. Margaritas isn't far away and I'm sure wants my business. Guess I'll go there next time.
