Wanted to try something new while staying in Keene between ski days. Given the current cold snap, it was right around the corner from where I was staying. I was solo so sat at the bar. Bartender didn't impress. Not sure he was experienced. Give away was putting olives on martini containing grapefruit juice, not mention an even number of olives (bad luck). The menus were fancy and I ordered a shaved roast beef sandwich with au jus. Shaved roast beef was on par with Steak-umms. French fries were your typical bagged fries. All in all it was ok at best. I was there last night on a Friday and sat at the bar and had dinner with my partner. The food was excellent. I had Mr. Miyagi. It was excellent. My partner had the short rib ravioli which was also excellent. We are whiskey/bourbon drinkers and the one thing that whiskey/burboun drinkers like in their old fashioned type drinks are single, large ice rocks and not the little broken ice chips that easily dilutes your drink. These are so easy to make yourself. Just buy an ice tray that makes them. The other thing whiskey/bourbon drinkers like in their drinks are the bourbon cherries and not just the plain maraschino cherries. Just two easy recommendations to elavate the experience. We ate here a 2nd time. First time was brunch and also not very good. Anyways ceaser salad was chopped to bits, the homemade dressing was okay, a few sad store bought croutons tried to liven it up. We also got the hot sauce marinated fried chicken sandwich, it was kinda wet and tough. Mass manufactured shoestring fries were also pretty sad fry wise. This used to be one of my favorite spots in Keene before we lived in Colorado. It changed hands a few years ago and hasn't been the same. The old menu was pretty small, and that is usually a sign of freshness and quality control. Service was okay, polite, and mostly accurate until the bartender filled what was remaining of my soda water with tap water. I'd stick with alcohol if you are coming here. The chicken fingers and bacon wrapped chicken were usually winners, I'd try those before anything else. But honestly with the competition in Keene for dining options I'd rather go elsewhere. Stopped by for lunch. Very nice drink menu. Two choices for dessert. The 7 layer chocolate cake was delicious. I had a blood orange gin drink that was superb. The cheeseburger was excellent. The grilled chicken was costumed order to be blackened so that accommodation was nice. Dinner entrees not served until 5ish. Street parking. Good ambience inside. Great service. read more

looking for a spot for lunch on the way home so tried here, it was on my yelp list so here we are...gee parked right in front so that was nice...sort of old and worn looking inside with newer fixtures sometimes...interesting nicely produced menu with interesting items , dirty pickle was an interesting martini and the coffee was good and refillable..pancake fan i was with loved the giant blueberry pancake and even she could not finish it, fan that she is...i had the summer heat chicken, not really spicy (good) and good...service was pleasant. we will be back to try the brunch again!!!! read more

Recently dined here on a busy Friday night our server was excellent checking in consistently despite having a full section. We had excellent cocktails and when our food took slightly longer than expected the manager took our appetizer off the bill! Absolutely not necessary but much appreciated. Hate to be picky but the sangria was served with no fruit and tasted watered down. The ramen salad was poorly executed, just some shaved carrotts, a few pickled onions, and junk lettuce, not very upscale at all. This location has undergone a few changes over the years. This location has now become a bar and a restaurant after a recent expansion into neighboring space. The bar section itself and outdoor seating have been updated also. The restaurant menu is good and had a verity of dishes that are worth trying. The updated bar had a good mix of beer, wine, and specialty drinks. Plenty of street parking. Pricing is fairly good and is competitive in the area. read more

21 recently catered a corporate event that I attended and the food was fantastic! Everything was temperature appropriate, the petite beef medallions were perfectly prepared and the spinach artichoke dip was a hit around the room. Even the salads were a hit as well, personal favorite was the beet & kale. Would certainly recommend 21 Bar & Grill catering. Renovations are to be applauded! This being said, our experience not so. We ordered a cheeseburger ( the traditionalist) and the kale salad (forgot its menu name). Kale was fresh, but the salad itself needed more goat cheese and dressing. If one likes to merely taste kale, this is the dish for you, otherwise this large portion of a salad was difficult to eat. From the outside, it appears to be very small and busy, but to open the front door you feel the space surrounding you in an intimate setting. Black is my favorite color and this is all that and more--very relaxing and comfortable space. I sat at the bar and ordered a glass of wine with a menu. I have to say this was not what I expected this place to be~ it's much more. The bartender, KJJ, recommended the Bacon Jam Burger and it was delicious with those waffle fries! I can tell a lot of work went into preparing my burger. It was OMG super good! I highly recommend 21 Bar & Grill to anyone who is looking for the atmosphere to go along with a good meal. Back again for an early Friday nite bite. Had cocktails at the bar with buffalo chicken dip & chips... had to go for a French dip, & chili bowl split between the 2 of us. Bartenders were terrific so we stayed for a while - fun & filling! The kicker is... I left my credit card by accident. Didn't realize till the next morning, but no sweat, it could only be at 21, so I wasn't worried. Sent off an email as soon as I figured it out. They replied quickly with a "don't worry, we'll keep it safe, just come in and show your ID. So thanks to everyone at 21 who makes this Pub an efficient, delicious, friendly hang! Located a smidge off the beaten path of Main Street in Keene, you'll find 21. I've been going to 21 since I turned 21 and it's a special place for me. They used to have a list of martinis in a binder but over the last couple years got rid of that and shortened it down. They still have delicious martinis and cool combos of flavors. Everyday they have Happy Hour from 4-6pm with $2 off their martinis (I think most martinis are $11 so $9 during Happy Hour). I've always enjoyed my drinks and recently really loved the Pineapple Ginger Martini. The service is hit or miss and it's nothing fancy here! They have a small deck outback for outdoor seating. I enjoy stopping by for a drink when I'm in the area! They have bar snacks and other fried options if you get hungry! They also have brunch on the weekends now! Enjoy! read more

I came here at 11:30 am on a Sunday with friends after a night visiting, intending to get something quick to eat and be out by 12:30 as a friend and I had to be on the road back for Boston. We chose this venue specifically for the Chicken and Waffles to order for brunch. Upon arriving we learned that they no longer carried this item, as the waffle press no longer worked, but the kitchen was more than willing to substitute waffles for pancakes. No problem, three of us got that with some waters, and one of us got a breakfast burrito and a black coffee. The morning was still going great. Half an hour goes by and we have not heard anything from the waitress. No problem, service is probably just a bit busy I thought. I look around and notice that the tables around me, even a table of two who came in shortly before us, all had their food. No problem, it's probably just taking a bit longer because we got "fried" chicken. Right? It was not until 12:15 that I decided to tell the server that I could not wait any longer and would just like to pay and switch my order to go, with the friend who ordered the breakfast burrito unfortunately already putting on his coat and opting to pay and just leave without the food. No problem, they said, our food would be just out. It was not until 12:25, my friend already waiting in the car, that my food was brought to me when the server asked if my friend had ordered anything at all. Remember, this was the friend who ordered the black coffee whereas the rest of us only ordered waters. Not only did they not make his food, but they had never even put his order in at all. In my opinion, most of the allure comes from the "upscale" appearance in contrast to most of the other local eateries that get by on a more "welcoming" and "warm" atmosphere. I would say come here for the drinks, but I have already found a negative review about the bartender. Not horrible but not great. Loved their cocktail list but even more excited about their mocktails list seeing as I'm pregnant. Food was good, but I feel priced too high for what was presented. $9 for truffle fries that were not that crispy and barely tasted of truffle oil. I really like this place. I moved to the Keene area this summer, and this has become my haunt. It is a mixed crowd of college kids and older people, which I like. Also I think a lot of industry people come by for a drink after the restaurants close. There is a reverse happy hour that has some really good deals. The chicken tenders with the house buffalo sauce are incredibly savory and tasty. If you like stiff and salty drinks, the Dirty Pickle is really good, and so is the pickle that comes in the glass. Can be loud and somewhat boisterous on Fri and Sat nights, but that may be the vibe you're looking for. I prefer quieter week nights. Also, no food served on Tuesday (if I remember right), so be aware. The bartenders are all super-friendly and have made me feel at home. read more

again, a bad experience at 21. we ordered tacos and the vegetarian (which were amazing last time we went) were garbanzo beans and pickled onion. the beef were shredded beef and cheese (they'd run out of brie ; not sure why someone didn't go buy some brie from ALDIs or hannafords. thats what we did when I worked in food service). no lettuce, no tomato or onion. just a tiny bit of garbanzo w/ onion , and beef and cheese. the Italian tacos others ordered had lettuce, but our server informed us that the lettuce is only for Italian tacos. if I had guests at home there's no way I would serve garbanzo beans with onion in a taco. so weird that a restaurant would think this is ok. anyway we'll be going back to the muse for taco Tuesdays. the drinks were good though, if you're only going for drinks, I recommend 21. I went to 21 for years and I had no complaints. the food was always delicious and filling. So disappointed they're now ok with such low par food. read more

Due to a really great happy hour, this has become a regular place. It's not awesome, but for what it is it's fine. There is an extensive cocktail menu, but I wouldn't call them craft cocktails by any means. Candy martinis and such. The bar food is quite good, for bar food. Decent salads and sandwiches, burgers and fries. They have great sweet potato fries with super yummy peanut sauce. The service is generally great. It's a small place and when busy it is very loud. With limited options in Keene this is one of my favorite places for a drink and a bite. My biggest complaint is no salmon. read more

Request the sunset aioli! I'm from pittsburgh so i may be slightly biased. I ordered the Cuban sandwich as per request of a working kitchen attendant by the name of Luke, with a side of waffle fries at the recommendation of the bartended, with a standard side of Pittsburgh aioli. While waiting and imbibing in lead free water, i soaked in the scenery. 603 brewery beer on tap, matchbox 22, blink 182, exactly 7 people at the bar with me, which made me feel lucky. 21 bar and grill is a real numbers bar if youre into that sort of thing. My food arrived, the ham was house smoked and delicious, waffle fries, crispy. Pittsburgh aioli was not white. The bartender assured me their house ranch, which they call sunset aioli was delicious. The bartender was great but the reason for my 2 star review is this..I ordered a drink with St. Germain. My drink came and I asked for a bit more St. Germain. The bartender poured some St. Elder in my drink. Yes, they are both elderberry liquor BUT I was paying for St. Germain which is much higher quality. I do. Great for a laid back drink and some food. They have really unique specials, both food and drink. They have daily deals, my favorite being all day happy hour on Monday. Weekend brunch is amazing, not only do they have vegetarian "sausage," but it's amazing. One of the best Bloody Marys in town. It has that great small town New England charm...Keene in particular is more habitable than other towns because the residents have made an attempt at culture - there's some coffeeshops, bookstores, a brewery, various college related stuff...this could go on and on. At the end of the day, it's a small town in New Hampshire - and there's not much to do, particularly for the young professional. So 21 is a godsend for them - it's not the dirty, crowded chaos of The Railroad or Kilkenney's or the depressing monument to alcoholism that is Penuche's - but an honest to goodness, chic little bar/restaurant that serves decent cocktails and good food, the kind of place you find in the cities. Now they have different bar tenders a different(worse)menu and the magic is just sadly gone, with I'm told "no hope" of revival. Best overall bar in Keene. Strong, well-made cocktails, good beers and great service. It's always busy which is fun...back patio is small but good to know about. Absolutely my pick in the whole area for brunch (SAT/SUN), that's my little hidden secret for you tourist types ;) Only downside?
