As a longtime local, I've seen Murphy's through its many incarnations. One thing has always remained constant: it has the best atmosphere in town. Murphy's on the Green is such a fixture of downtown Hanover, it almost seems silly to post a review, but I am here for all the vegans and vegetarians who enjoy the dark and cozy atmosphere of a pub or who are tagging along with their omnivorous companions and can sometimes feel left out. This is a comfortable, casual venue serving up classic pub fare, sometimes with a surprising and delightful twist, that has something for everyone. Recommendations are always advisable unless you go at an off time (i.e. very early). We went for an early dinner on Easter Sunday because we don't care for the traditional foods of the holiday, although they did offer a ham dinner which one of our companions selected and said was great (the mashed potatoes were particularly noteworthy, and the roasted carrots were very fresh). We were greeted at the door by our friendly and super sweet server, who also did double duty at the bar and could speak intelligently about the offerings, which helped us make personalized choices. For dinner, I enjoyed the beet salad and their house-made chickpea burger smash style. The beet salad was satisfying and the chickpea burger was served on a soft brioche and held together well, which made savoring the subtle flavors much easier! Neither of my dishes was heavily salted, flavored or spiced; they were the way they would be if I took the care to make them at home. For travelers, this might come as a welcome relief! I chose their fries for my side, and they were delicious! My husband had their wings and the lobster risotto, the latter of which I was unable to snap a photo of because it disappeared rather quickly. Of course, it was the standard risotto serving size (big plate, tiny scoop). The cocktails were fresh and delightful. The desserts were a little split. I chose the brownie sundae and found the brownie itself kind of dry and flavorless, which sounds bad to say, but it's done by design as the dish is punched up with a not-too-large (appreciated) scoop of good vanilla ice cream and drizzled sauces on top. If you love a deep, dark, rich, chewy brownie, keep this in mind, because this was light and not the fudgy, total sugar bomb you might be expecting. They featured a Crème Brûlée-egg, which was a festive spin on crème brûlée designed to taste like the famed Cadbury Crème Egg, which both the people who had it said it in fact did, and one said it was the best crème brûlée he had ever tasted. read more

Great food, great ambiance, nice big TVs for football. Polite server checked on us and frequently filled our waters. Brisket sandwich is so good and not disgustingly heavy. Sometimes you order one and think to yourself why did I order this? Not here. Just the right size. Good smoke ring. I had a chicken Cesar wrap which was nice and lightly dressed(just right) and not too huge where it's gross. Good portions. My son had a burger which he liked also. Murphys is a downtown staple. It's a go to on any night of the week. I've had drinks at the bar once or twice. The bartender is typically a work horse, churning out drinks for the masses but as a result of the many people and the one bartender don't be difficult and get something that takes time to make. Regarding dinner, I enjoyed a window seat on Main Street. In terms of the menu however, it might want to do less. To have coq au vin and nachos and scallop crisp on the menu is a little bit of a reach for me. It feels like Murphys just isn't sure what kind of food it wants to serve. Also has anyone ever in the history of the universe ordered shrimp nachos? ... odd option. The Brussels spouts were pretty good. I'd suggest keeping those but maybe pairing down the menu so that it makes sense. And once paired down focus on doing a few dishes really really well. Something by like 5 people in our party got the rigatoni white bolognese. IMO it needs a little more flavor so that would be a top seller to double down on perfecting. Overall vibes are high because this is a regular spots for Dartmouth grad students. read more

Always never liked their food very much. Way too expensive for food I could cook better myself. On this particular evening, they gave away our table of 18 for a birthday to a random group that claimed they were us so we had to cram into the corner. Thought it would be a great place to eat on our Autumn Road Trip. We loved the atmosphere and were trying to enjoy this upbeat little tavern. But... the food was horrible! We couldn't finish. Soggy noodle with tomato sauce??? Overdone crunchy chicken parm with no mozzerella. The fish sandwich was dried out, frozen. Charged additional prices for substitutions because" fries automatically stay on the dish". Very disappointed. We feel we wasted our money here. read more

We were greeted warm and friendly and asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside and we chose outside! I was visiting from out of town and this restaurant was recommended. I wasn't impressed and will not go back. I was with a group of 12 people and it took over an hour for the food. Before the food was served I spoke with the manager about the time it was taking for the food and she said she would check on it and be right back. The food started coming out and I had a special - the food was cold and at this point I was done. The manager never came back and had the nerve to say thank you upon leaving. Grading solely on food, I'd say between a 3-4...but overall such good service that I am giving a 5. It strikes me as a typical college pub. Decent tap list with an assortment of local beers. Typical bar fare: burgers, fish&chips, etc. We got the calamari, Murphy's burger, chicken sandwich, as well as the mussels. While most of the food tasted like what you expect, the mussels were the surprise hit - they aren't cooked solely in your typical butter and wine, but actually cooked with chorizo, which gives it a wonderful flavor. Our waitress was a delight. She was affable with us, helpful in recommendations, and attentive in service. The owner was also so friendly - he stopped by multiple times to make sure everything was ok and to chit chat. It's been rare I've encountered such friendly service, and really gave our crew a great night out at the restaurant. Definitely plan on coming back for the good vibes! read more

Excellent service, comfy tavern-like restaurant ambiance, good food. All of the staff members were very friendly. My water was always full. The food came out fairly quickly too. Our waiter Charlie was very attentive and accommodating. The vibe is like a dark comfy bar/restaurant type of vibe. It's very casual and it seemed to be full of young and old adults alike. It seemed clean and well run. We ordered wings (10 with sweet chili sauce and then 10 with 1/2 BBQ and 1/2 Buffalo), gochujang brussel sprouts, and the veggie of the day. The wings are very big and juicy so that was a delicious surprise. The sweet chili sauce isn't super ~Asian~ tasting but they were still very good! The Buffalo wings were spot on and the BBQ wings were very sweet if you're into that kind of BBQ sauce. We loved the wings and the portion was really big (10 giant traditional wings). The brussel sprouts were crispy but I didn't get any strong flavors from them and couldn't get any taste of gochujang. The veggie of the day was SO good. Have wanted to visit Murphy's since first read about it in Bill Bryson's I'm a Stranger Here Myself. Did not disappoint - Liam guided us to a good spot, shared stories of when Bryson was a regular and gave great recommendations. Food was creative and inventive - had rolls, nachos, panko fish and chips and fusilli a la vodka. All was very good and setting was convivial and charming. read more

The location is fantastic in proximity to Dartmouth College. Not sure if it was THE Murphy who greeted us but whoever it was, he was great! The food is good. 2 burgers, 2 prime rib specials & 1 fish & chips. Service was a little slow, waiter was kind but a little inattentive. The burgers were yummy as was the fish & chips. The prime rib was dry & lacking flavor. No au jus to enhance it. The horseradish didn't have enough flavor or kick. It's Loud but I think that's part of the ambience. I recommend everyone to try Murphy's. I know I'll be back but just not on family weekend. I will assume that's the reason for the slower service. read more

It was late night so we arrived with drinks and snacks on our mind, but we got that and so much more. This is because the Barre keep was so attentive; he really took care of us and our order and anticipated needs or desires, and then quickly fulfilled them. The best way to describe the experience because of him is one of joy... One slightly unrelated concern I will share has to do with the plants that were there: see it is winter time and the person caring for the Barre or the plants or whatever doesn't is not aware that the tropical plants do not belong in the window because it is too cold for them and so they looked really sad and in need of care. I'm the kind of person that notices these things (in fact, plants actually speak to me and let me know their needs). But other than that, we had a great time so I highly recommend and would visit Murphy's on the Green again read more

If I could give zero stars I would! Worst experience I think I've ever had at a restaurant. I don't typically review but I feel compelled to share this because it was so crazy. We drove an hour to meet friends (also restaurant owners). Started out good, server was attentive, drinks and appetizers ordered.then we ordered dinner, first of all it took 45 minutes. Pretty sure the server forgot to put it in, we ordered another round of drinks... didnt come for 25 minutes, soda and beer, nothing complicated. THEN steak tips I ordered MR were well over cooked on top of what looked like polenta that was supposed to be mashed potato and wet spinach. I have never sent food back, worked in the industry for years, but I sent it back. Also had another steak at the table way over cooked, he sent that back too. I ordered something quick and easy because we already waited so long.I ordered fish and chips figured fried fast-I NEVER GOT A DINNER. The server literally disappeared, the host who sat us was running food out and cooking. It was a shit show! I ate Doritos and Twix from a gas station on the drive home. read more

This was my second visit to Murphy as an out of towner. We had a group of 10. The restaurant is comfortable and cozy. I thoroughly enjoyed the French onion soup and the strawberry salad.Service was good. There is street parking available but it was full. There is a pay parking lot not too far. All 4 were positively inedible and this place is not cheap. 1) Ribeye - cooked med/rare. Was like shoe leather and void of all taste. 2) Crispy Chicken Sandwich - Crispy all right. It was black and cooked so much past death that the inside was actually hollow. Looked like Clark Griswold's Turkey on Christmas Vacation. All you could taste was burned batter. 3) Fish and Chips x2. Don't get me started on this. Simply disgusting. 4) Gazpacho - Disgusting. read more

I've been to Murphy's frequently for the last 6 years. Service is still just fine, but the food tonight was the worst I've ever had: the Caesar salad was drowning in dressing and the croutons were concrete (so stale); the pasta dishes were small, and under seasoned; and the vegetables were burnt. Pretty poor considering all dishes are over $25. Hoping Murphy's food returns to former form soon. read more

I used to eat here regularly when I was in college, and I always enjoyed it. I realize that was over 10 years ago, so our waiter told us they have a new chef who just revamped the menu. My boyfriend and I did NOT like the changes that this new chef has made. The waiter actually recommended everything on the menu, but we didn't like any of the food we got. The main problem is that the chef is trying to make the menu too fancy for an Irish pub. Perhaps if we had ordered burgers and fish-n-chips, we would have been happier. But the fig BBQ sauce in the pulled pork mac-n-cheese did not complement the flavors, and the salmon tacos had no flavor except for the fried cabbage on top. Both of these dishes barely had any meat in them, and the servings were SO small. They were appetizer portions at entrée prices. And on top of that, our waiter (Brian) was so rude. He could tell we weren't happy with the food, but instead of asking how he could help or what the restaurant could do better, he ignored us for the rest of the night and actually threw our receipt on the table without making eye contact or saying "thank you." When I went to Murphy it was ordered the chicken sandwich it wasn't cooked fully and I couldn't eat the middle of the sandwich. My mom ordered the pulled pork sandwich and it fully tasted like cat food I had to spit it out. My dad's burger was average 4/10. The service was nothing special and not memorable. Mostly college kids. The actual restaurant is crowded and dark, but not bad. It's a little overwhelming but they have nice outdoor eating experience. read more

Been coming here for years, apparently a new chef has taken over. Calamari was a large portion, but most of the batter could not stick to the rings. Odd. Also, not too sure if pairing PEI mussels with chorizo was a great idea, but we tried them anyway. Interesting flavor... but would not order again. Mysterious contents of their once famous fish and chips. Last night they contained some ground concoction of hopefully(?) fish, like a paste fried into finger biteable pieces. DEFINITELY NOT Cod or Haddock. Guiness on tap of course was good, but I could've saved a whole lot of money by buying a 4 pack of cans and box of Gorton's fish sticks. Soggy skinny fries too. Didn't look anything like the posted pics, which are a standard presentation of a basic dish. Murphy's On the Green is apparently a Hanover institution, and my wife was a regular there several decades ago when she was at the Big-D. So when we went back for her to wander the old campus and muse about the sorority dramas of yore, a stop into Murph's was a must. To my great delight, my Murph burger was delicious. Whatever local source they use for their beef does it right, and my burger was cooked to juicy perfection. We ordered lobster guacamole which was okay. The calamari was tiny and soggy. Buttermilk chicken sandwich could have been better. The pulled pork sandwich was plain with no sauce.
