Driving home to Massachusetts on a busy Saturday night we called Thyme to see if they could accommodate us at 7 pm. Our hostess and later server, Leona, answered the phone and was extremely pleasant in letting us know she could get us seated. Leona recommended the Brussels and they did not disappoint with a perfect combo of roasted small Brussel sprouts with crispy prosciutto, goat cheese mousse and pickled red onions. What a great combo!! We also split the spinach salad which was perfect for winter with dried cherries, blue cheese, candied pecans and apples. We also had the artichoke fritters which had a subtle taste of artichoke and bits of tangy lemon. We split the ginger pork meatloaf and it was a creative, delicious take on traditional meatloaf. The flavor was reminiscent of the inside of a superb Peking dumpling. The dining room was decorated with beautiful area photos and there was beautiful display of custom designed knives that could be seen in a show case on the way to the restrooms. It's an unassuming location in a shopping plaza, but stepping inside, the atmosphere is all warm lighting, soft music, industrial ceilings, and floor to ceiling windows. The service is friendly. Brandon was my server for the evening, and he did not miss a beat. He was very attentive and provided great advice on the menu. The bees knees cocktail was so balanced, and one of the best tasting ones compared to so many restaurants that make this overly lemony or too sweet with honey. When I was asked if I would like bread, I asked what, if anything, was special about it. Brandon says, welll the bread is good but the highlight is the chimichurri sauce. Immediately intrigued, I found the dipping sauce to be less chimichurri and more like a delicious salad dressing but it was strangely addictive to dip bread in. The flash grilled Caesar had a delicious homemade dressing and briny sardines, very good as well. For dinner, I ordered the char-grilled teres major steak, paired with malbec. The steak came covered with an au poivre sauce, cooked perfectly medium, and so juicy. This was complemented by roasted carrots, and potabello mushroom, onion, and potato hash. The potatoes were large, crispy cubes. There was nothing about this meal that was less than stellar. I highly recommend it with the malbec! For how amazing this restaurant is, I was surprised that the price wasn't goug-ey. I wouldn't hesitate to come here for a great night out. read more

This is the second time that we visited Thyme and this experience was every bit as great as the first. The prices were reasonable. The food quality was amazing, The drink pours were very fair. The menu for both adult beverages and the food was excellent and our server Leona was outstanding. Both my wife and I had the half order Flash grilled Ceasar Salad and it was a very nice potion and tasted amazing. The meatloaf, something that I never order in restaurants, came highly reccommended and did not disappoint. Ir was "lick the plate clean" wonderful and paired well with a glass of the Guenoc cabernet. I finished with a decaf cappachino and a chocolate chip bread pudding with caramel sauce. Had a lovely dinner at Thyme tonight and was so glad we selected this restaurant to go out for a special meal with two hard of hearing family members. The space is beautiful with large windows *and yet it's not chilly* and tables are not too close together. The sound level was reasonable so even my very hard of hearing mother-in-law could participate in our dinner conversation. The food was excellent and the service impeccable. Our server was wonderfully attentive and even made lemonade for my mother-in-law even though it was not available on the menu. Artichoke fritters - 5/5 delicious and light appetizer Garlic fries - 5/5 crisp and just the right amount of seasoning with an aoili dip Pear salad - 5*/5 arugula, pear, dried cherries, and we substituted goat cheese for the bleu cheese (which our waitress agreed with!) - super delicious, light, fresh, and I would be happy to go back just to have this salad! Scallop entree - 4/5 four nice sized scallops on a bed of black rice with asian flavorings Meat loaf - I didn't get to taste this one but my mother-in-law very much enjoyed it and almost finished it all which is saying a lot for a small eater Steak - 5/5 ordered two of these, both done medium rare, tender, large portions (neither of us finished ours), with a tasty sauce on top and mushrooms/onions/potatoes on the side, served with baby carrots (which I do not prefer) so asked for green beans which they gladly substituted. Chocolate cake for dessert 5/5 - their variation of a whoopie pie made with Stout beer to lighten up the cake - ice cream sandwiched in between two pieces of cake and topped with whipped cream. Yum! Thyme is a modern-style vibe restaurant that is nested in the old heart of white river junction. Unfortunately, the vibe is where it peaks. My major gripe is the cost of the food relative to the quality/quantity. I expected a $36 medium-rare Teres major steak to have a "melt-in-your-mouth" sensation, but it didn't. The $27 baked sole tasted fresh, but I would have preferred some more seasoning. Lastly, I am a bread pudding fanatic and order it almost everywhere it is available. The caramel chocolate chip bread pudding got me excited, then let me down. I had hoped for a soft, warm center with a crispy top drizzled in a creamy glaze. Instead, the whole thing was a little too sweet/chocolate heavy, pretty mushy, and without any crispy texture variation. While I'm happy to spend $80-85 on a meal once in a while, this just wasn't it for me. Looking back on Yelp, it seemed like this place had much more exciting and cost-congruent menus back in the day. Staying in Hanover, we were in New Hampshire for the weekend to attend bike week at Laconia. Our favorite restaurant in White River Junction, Elixir, appears to have closed so we were looking for something else to try and stumbled across Thyme. The weather had been threatening all day and on the ride back from Laconia it started spitting just enough to be annoying the last half hour of the ride. So when we got back to the hotel we put the rain gear on to make the 15 minute ride over to White River Junction. We were glad we did. Once seated, our waiter discussed our options for the evening. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable. We ordered a bottle of wine from an eclectic collection priced very reasonably. Our waiter explained that their distributor imported a number of wines under his own name and passed the savings along (or at least that was my interpretation of the story). My wife ordered the pear salad which we split. It was fresh, the right size, and delicious. The Swordfish was my wife's choice and I had the beef which Thyme calls Teres Major Steak for our main meals. Again, all well prepared with wonderful sides and cooked to perfection. I'm a chocolate fan, so the mouse was the desert of choice. After which we suited back up for the ride back to Hanover. read more

We arrived a bit on the late side since we were traveling from out of state. After reading several reviews we decided to give it a shot and I am very pleased we did. It took no time to get us seated since we were there at the end of the night. For starters my son ordered the steak, my girlfriend had th scallops special and I went with the meatloaf. We were all extremely pleased with our meal. The meals were cooked perfectly at the right temperature and oh so flavorful. My meatloaf was so delicious, tender and moist. The mashed potatoes were so velvety. The scallops special was delicious as well. My girlfriend enjoyed the meal. My son felt his steak was cooked really good. My first visit to Thyme. It was a delicious experience. Tried the fritters, Caesar salad and finally the pan-seared halibut. All were really well made - the fritters had a lightly fried crust & soft center, the grilled Caesar was not overdone and had a tasty dressing, and the halibut almost melts in the mouth and rests on a bed of spinach, peas and red potatoes. No complaints on any of the food and then add very attentive and friendly service. Perfect for the weary traveler. read more

My husband and I had dinner last night at Thyme and it was perfection. The hostess was welcoming and gracious, the waiter was smart and funny and the food was amazing. We each had the half Caesar Salad, still a more than generous portion, and the pan poached halibut with lemon caper sauce, peas, new potatoes and a crunchy udon garnish. Everything was lovely from start to finish. And while the restaurant was full at peak dinner hour on a Friday night, the tables are far enough apart that you can have a normal volume conversation and hear yourself think. Went here for the first time last week, and my only regret is that we haven't been sooner! What a find! The artichoke fritters were phenomenal; and since I couldn't decide, I also had a half order of the grilled Caesar salad. Yum! The pasta main course was delicious, but I was so full from the apps that I took most of it home. My husband had the swordfish which he said was, and I quote, "the best I have ever had in my entire life." And we are seafood lovers! Hannah, our server, was charming and attentive; and when we called to say that we would be a few minutes late, Gary was so enthusiastic, I instantly became twice as excited about coming to try the place out! My son was making his PhD defense at Dartmouth. We had alot of family coming in from out of town to see his presentation. I wanted an intimate place where we could celebrate and be able to hear each other without disturbing others. I also wanted something different than the standard Hanover fair that we had experienced several times before. Thyme fit the bill perfectly. Thyme has a lovely back room that fit our party of 14 perfectly. Thyme was very flexible to allow us to add 2 people the day before the dinner and 1 even as we arrived to the restaurant. They also allowed us some time in arrival as it was hard to predict when the exam would be done - we had a 30 min window for arrival. The space was lovely and service excellent. We started by gathering and talking in an open area of the room with a champagne toast. Speeches and praises galore. Then we settled in at the dinner table where the service was attentive. We were able to order off the menu and all our needs were met in reasonable time - even when special requests were made. We ordered from appetizers to deserts - with no feeling or rush and no needs unmet. The food both appeared and tasted lovely. This restaurant is a great price for what you get! It's a farm to table restaurant with an oft-updating menu and awesome service (shout out Gary my group loved you). A high-end restaurant shouldn't be this cheap and still this good--most of our entrees were ~$25, had great portion sizes, and had really creative ingredients and pairings (one of us got the duck leg with the blueberry ~gastrique~ that became the meme of the night). The cocktail list is also an absolute steal--most of their mixed drinks used higher end liquors but roughly cost around $5 less than they would at any other bar and honestly $15 cheaper than any fine dining establishment I've been to. There was also never any pressure for our table to be turned or for us to order quickly, even when it was past close time. I know how hard it is to stay positive and upbeat an hour after your shift was supposed to end but man, our waiter Gary? What a king. He did just that. Only complaint is the "Blue Moon" raspberry sorbet was, in fact, not blue, and that was simply the brand. Slight disappointment. Ended up with a $160 bill for four with entrees, appetizers, desserts, and a cocktail that I would've expected to pay $225-250 for. If you were planning on going to Pine in Hanover, just come here instead. Absolute steal. read more

I am always amazed at the transformation of White River Junction from a forgotten center of ex-urban decay to an energetic, historical town with culture and most of all, a vibrant restaurant scene. Over recent years, several excellent restaurants have set up shop in the town, and Thyme is one of them. As a matter of fact, Thyme would be a candidate for fine dining in one of our major cities. We came here after having made reservations. Sort of a special occasion as we were dining with our nephew and his amazing girlfriend. We were immediately seated by the windows. The atmosphere was really nice, the place lends itself to conversation with little noise pollution. We tried the excellent appetizer selection, the Vermont Cheese platter and the Beet Salad. Both were superb, the cheese platter came with date almond bread, fruit and some amazing almonds. The cheeses included Vermont Blue, and different cheddars. The beet salad was indeed supreme. My main course was a seared salmon with melted leek cream that was yummy. My spouse had a tender and juicy grilled strip steak. We accompanied the faire with a luscious Malbec. We are newer to the area and had high hopes for Thyme. First we were sat down and no one even said hi for 15 minutes, servers walked by and acted like we were not even there sitting with no water. Finally our server came out of the back and came to the table, rather than going over the menus or even introducing her self she just asked if we wanted to order. It was a recommendation that paid off. First, the staff is incredible. Friendly, engaging, helpful, honest-I could go on and on. We came in early one day as a drop in and they did their best to accommodate us, even though we needed to depart before the first seating. They never made us feel rushed. The bread was warm and fresh and that grilled caesar salad was delish. My Pasta with lemon sauce was meh, the ingredients were fresh but it needed something to brighten it, I don't like the need to "add salt" to get flavor out of an entree, but this needed something. My husbands scallops were tasty, so it was a good balance. The Brulee dessert was also custardy with a fresh torched sugar top- yum. We ordered two take-out meals. Almost all the packaging was cardboard, not plastic. Kudos! The meals themselves (seared scallops, delicious) were nestled in squares of wax paper, making for easy transfer from box to plate. We shared one order of the artichoke fritters. A special little restaurant find in White River Junction. We have driven through White River Junction many times to shop at Vermont Salvage and this time I noticed a restaurant removed from downtown but only a couple of blocks away. An easy walk back to the restaurant from downtown this was worth the walk. I was pleasantly surprised by the menu. Limited but very seasonal and very focused. Charred romaine Caesar salad and Philly Cheese Steak were our lunch with a bottle of Riesling. Salad was excellent and the cheese steak was almost as good. The only thing I wish was that they had more servers on duty at lunch as the wait for service was extraordinarily long but the food made up for the wait. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for lunch and the dinner menu also looks inviting. read more

What in the WHAT!? I don't understand what I just stumbled into, I still think I was dreaming. Oh and this is a milestone review, #200....and I'm honored to be reviewing such an incredible find. This isn't a "cafe" in my eyes at all unless you count the small outdoor space I saw, which when i was there it was still 12 degrees outside. I'm sure this is a gem of a spot on a 70 degree summer night but I still felt right at home in the dimly-lit, artfully decorated interior. Gary was my waiter and he was one of, if not THEE best waiter I have ever had in my entire life. That isn't an exaggeration at all. He was knowledgeable about the food, helpful at every turn and super pleasant....but not in a pushy or campy way. Kudos to whoever hired him, hold onto him for as long as you can. I started with the soup of the day, white bean and barley. When a soup is this good to start a meal you know you are in for a treat. Perfectly balanced and topped with fresh herbs, the beans were cooked to perfection and I slurped up everything in my bowl. Well technically I didn't "start" with the soup, the bread and faux chimichurri dipping sauce almost outshined everything else I had. While the bread was fairly standard, the dip was divine. It reminded me of ginger/scallion dip my wife's Chinese father made us for dunking freshly killed chicken from Chinatown. If it didn't sit around for at least 24 hours to have all of those yummy flavors blend together in a beautiful marriage then the Tip Top chef really fooled me with this one. Can I get a bottle of this to go.....pretty please? Some of the biggest disappointments came from the pork belly dish. About 10% of it was unedible and super fatty. To be expected with belly but I don't like wasting meat and some of it could have been trimmed off. Also, the jicama didn't pair as well with the pork as I think the chef was going for. Sure, it's exotic but I'd much rather have a green apple compliment the belly, even though they aren't really in season in the middle of winter. The onion topping was a great touch and I can't remember ever having those two things together before, usually fried onions are with beef. Still, none of the perceived flaws pulled down the overall rating of the restaurant.. This type of food in Boston would likely cost 30 - 40% more than what I paid (I think the pork belly was $18). You're spoiled at times Vermont, especially when it comes to the farm to table so many of these great joints are offering these days. I can't wait to go back even though my time in VT is coming to an end.....this is one special, classy place and the owners are doing everything right. read more

I'm not sure why this place has such great reviews, to be honest. In fact, they're so much different from my experience there that perhaps they were having a bad day when I was there. Or they're so old (the most recent one is two months ago), that perhaps they have lost their edge. Whatever it is - this restaurant was a let-down from our expectation based on the other reviews. We took a slight detour on our drive from Vermont to Boston to eat here. When we arrived, we were kept waiting for between 5 and 10 minutes while the hostess was cleaning tables for the guests who arrived before us. When she finally finished doing someone else's job, she was a delight and the only part of the meal that was truly noteworthy. We ordered soup and sandwich to eat. I ordered the chicken salad and he ordered the Rueben. Both were average and nothing to write home about. The soup also was average. I wish I could write more about the food, but the fact that I have so little to say should tell you how totally and completely un-noteworthy it was. We ate it and felt full, but unamused. The service was less than average. After waiting an endless amount of time to be seated, acknowledged by a server, served our drinks, and served the food, we asked for the bill to the only waitress we saw in the place. She was totally dismissive and had the same "not my job" attitude. The hostess finally checked us out. Don't go to Thyme unless you want average food, below average service, and have a lot of time. read more

A Wonderful Find! Just 5 minutes off route 91, this is a great place to stop for a delicious lunch or dinner. The food is very fresh and tasty. We were there at lunch time on a Saturday. Many of the locals appear to get a basket of French fries for the table. While the fries looked terrific, I can't say we tasted them. I had a terrific chicken corn chowder and a riff on a Reuben, but it used brisket and red cabbage (and no cheese), and came with a side salad. It was listed as a half sandwich, but it was a nice size, and was wonderful. My wife had a salad with grilled shrimp that she could not say enough about. Had the VT fresh lemon-thyme fettuccine work kale, Parmesan, pine nuts and sun-dried tomato pesto. It was very good. They also served a tasty spread with the bread. What a wonderful and surprising dinner. If I could give the place 4.5 stars I would, because the food was first rate. The service was a bit lackadaisical and slightly slow, but we weren't in a hurry. My husband had the swordfish special and I had the cod, and both were beautifully presented and delicious. We shared artichoke fritters and aiolii, which were good but not very artichoke. He had the beet salad, fresh, pretty, and tasty. Desert was a too-sweet and mushy apple crisp. We did love the food and the atmosphere is much nicer than we expected from driving by in the past. High marks for Thyme. Server Dakota was friendly, had a personality, and was attentive but not intrusive. The menu offered a number of selections that were appealing, making it difficult to select among 2 or 3 that really looked good. I selected the 1/2 and 1/2 soup and sandwich. The soup was more a bowl size than a cup. And I'm so pleased it was. The tomato basil bisque was excellent. I paired it with 1/2 sandwich of beef brisket Reuben. Reuben had a generous portion of tender beef--very pleasing. Dessert included Dulce de leche and bread pudding (no not all for me. There were 4 in our group). The dulce was light and delightful, topped with fresh whipped cream and blueberries. The bread pudding was lightly sauced with a whisky butter sauce which was not heavy with alcohol (I prefer a simple butter sauce so this was fine). The bread pudding was dense, not light, and included chocolate. Yes do plan a stop there. My experience says you won't be disappointed. read more

I can't speak highly enough about Thyme, easily the best meal I had on my recent get away with my GF. Food was beyond good I got the the pork meatloaf and she got the salmon. We both eat Keto but opted to cheat on our diets with their desserts, it was definitely the right call. Best flourless chocolate cake i've ever had: Rich Chocolate taste, beautiful velvety texture. There service was a little slower than what you'd expect in a boston or providence restaurant but i think that's more due to the pace of life up there then a problem with the restaurant. I personally found it very relaxing and thought it added to the charm, to be clear it was far from slow. the reason I gave it 5 stars over 4 was because its value was incredible its rare to find a restaurant that so perfectly balances taste and experience with value. My friends and I were disappointed for Saturday lunch. Once we were seated, we waited at least ten minutes before we got waters. We waited another 5-10 mins for our host to come approach us for orders. While this would have been okay if they were busy, most of the restaurant was empty.
