I am a 3.5, but just couldn't upgrade to 4, given our food experience. Server was very nice and our drinks were fine (a beer and a wine), but the food didn't live up to the rating. Mussels were small and sandy. The sauce had way too much cream and the bread was hard as a rock. His petit filet was requested medium, but it was butterflied and well done. My scallops were actually pretty good flavor, but lacked a nice sear. The dessert was abysmal. It was an "ice cream sandwich". It was more like two rectangles of cake brownie with a dollop of soft ice cream inside. It wasn't an ice cream sandwich, those weren't cookies, the ratio was completely off and the flavor was meh. I don't know why that's on the menu. Sadly, we were super excited to dine there and I would not go back.

Thursday night was bustling. There is a parking lot directly in front of the restaurant, which i wish I knew before grabbing a street parking spot earlier up the road. The food was excellent. I ordered all specials, the cauliflower soup with cheered was well balanced, rich, yet satisfying and light. The scallops and monkfish were perfectly cooked, and farro risotto packed with flavor. The creme brulee was good but nothing super special. Overall service was great until it was time for dessert, which took about 25 minutes to arrive. No chocolate lava cake involved either. It was to the point where we thought maybe we shouldn't have ordered dessert because it took so long. Another staff member seemed to practically run out of the kitchen with our desserts, so they knew they were behind the 8 ball. Overall, the atmosphere and ambiance was fun and the staff all very friendly. I would definitely return.

A very solid date and drink spot in white river junction! The food is surprisingly good Chicken liver mousse 5/5: It was fantastic and was a great shareable portion, had to keep the bread flowing for it. A must try Salmon 4/5: Very solid dish and cooked to preserve the moistness of the fish- would recommend Short rib 3.5/5: was good as well but out of all the dishes I would not put it as great as the others Ambiance/ Service: A little dark inside for me as it's not and only lit restaurant but depending where you sit the lighting can be slightly awkward for ambiance or photos. The service was good

This was definitely one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. To get a table here you almost have to have reservations which requires creating an account....just do it, you won't be sorry. The options were limited so we opted for a 7:15 reservation and in hopes we could get seated early we showed up 1/2 hour before. That didn't happen so we grabbed a couple seats at the bar. Considering the dining room was fairly small the bar was quite large. We opted for a couple of their specialty cocktails. I ordered the Elixir Manhattan. Wow! Gorgeous to look at and tasted fantastic. Right after the drinks arrived our table was ready so we moved to our seats. For appetizers we had the mussels and a Caesar salad. Mussels were a very generous portion and had a coconut curry sauce that was very nice. Not overpowering but a nice complement to the flavor of the mussels. For the main course we had the Cocoa dusted Petit Filet and the Pancetta and Peas. All I can say is wow - presentation was great and flavors were great. We were too full for dessert but wow what an amazing meal. Hats off to the entire team there - you all have something pretty special going on in the restaurant.

I am always pleasantly surprised when I find a restaurant doing creative cuisine in an area where, it seems, the most upscale place is the local Applebee's. White River Junction, Vermont, the town where I am currently quartered, is a town of about 2,500 right across the White and Connecticut Rivers from West Lebanon, New Hampshire, with its population of 4,100. Given that tiny total population, I hadn't expected much beyond national chains. So it was to my great delight that I discovered Elixir. It's a small-ish fine-dining restaurant that survives and even thrives by being open three hours a day, five days a week (5-8, Tuesday through Saturday). Having worked in the restaurant industry, I thought it was incredibly optimistic to believe you could make a go of it being open only 15 hours a week. But it works! It works so well, in fact, that they're pretty much at capacity from opening to closing. And after a couple of visits where I didn't get past the appetizers, I can see why. On my first visit I had the chicken liver mousse: two quenelles of light, fluffy mousse with chives and crispy capers served with Red Hen crostini. Spreading only modest amounts of the heavenly almost-foam on the crostini meant a re-order of bread, which bartender Lydia was only too happy to get for me. A glass of Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon and I was set for the evening. On my next visit, I branched out (a little) and tried the Duck Confit bruschetta and an order of truffle fries. Both were delicious. The duck was stacked atop slices of Granny Smith apple and brie, and drizzled with a cherry gastrique. The fries were super thin, yet retained their heat long enough for me to go through most of them, dipping them in the roasted shallot aioli as I went. Elixir offers specials each evening. Tonight's included a cucumber dill soup with dill fronds, seared sea scallops, vegetarian risotto, and pan-seared monkfish. Regular menus items included cocoa-dusted hangar steak, mahi mahi tacos, shrimp scampi, and more. While Elixir has a definite energy, it is not so loud as to be off-putting. It's the kind of place where the chef can flex his culinary muscles while the patrons - many of them local and regulars - respond with sighs and moans that leave no doubt about how much they're enjoying their sumptuous repast. I plan to visit as many more times as I can manage while I'm still in the area. There are a lot of interesting dishes on the menu, and I intend to try as many as possible while I'm still in town. Maybe I'll see you there!

Elixir is a lovely spot for date night in WRJ. The ambiance is warm and inviting. There's a small area with couches, though it's next to the buster station so I didn't see any patrons spending time there. They have a nice curved bar top to the left of the entrance where you can dine in or get drinks. The host was very clearly new and still getting the ropes. We were seated in the wrong spot, they needed our table for a 7 top coming in later. This was not an issue for us, we moved without hesitation and they kindly offered us some bubbly for the move which we appreciated. Our waiter was awesome, super knowledgeable and on top of his game. He had great recommendations regarding potential changes to make to the dishes. The food itself is good but not great. If I had to rate our dishes in order it would be the lamb, clam chowder, chicken liver mouse and then last the pancetta and peas. Nothing was super flavorful but the lamb was cooked nicely. The only dish I wouldn't recommend was the pancetta and peas. It's heavy on the beets. This was partially why I ordered it, I love beets. But the flavor combo just did not work in my opinion and the noodles were too al dente aka rather hard. Overall finding restaurants in the upper valley is a challenge so this is not a bad spot.

We came on a Thursday night and it was pretty busy, probably not enough servers because ours wasn't great and our food came out really late compared to our other diners that arrive later than we did. Maybe cuz we had 4 people? But overall food was pretty tasty. But small portion sizes for the pricing. And by small, I mean just enough to not get you full but not hungry. I ordered salmon and Caesar salad. My husband ordered the lasagna. My friends ordered the cod cakes and shrimp and mussel fra diavolo. We also ordered cocktails and some wine. My Faroe Salmon was a little bland. They put a tapenade on top but that didn't really have flavor either. The salmon was of good quality though. My husbands lasagna was good but he said he ate it in 2 bites. It was too small for him. He said it tasted like homemade and enjoyed it. My friends shrimp and mussels pasta was spicy. She said it was too spicy but I tasted it and I should have gotten that. Had much more flavor. Overall, not too bad. Probably one of the better places in town.

What used to be a sketchy area is now filled with boutique shops, bustling businesses of tech and industry, arts, culture, and restaurants. One such upscale craft cocktail bar is Wolf Tree. If you didn't know it, you might feel as if you'd stepped into a hipster cocktail lounge in Brooklyn as you walk into Wolf Tree. They offer a variety of playful and inventive drinks. My friend was able to get a virgin cocktail but I just wish they had more than one single cocktail on the menu with vodka. With my choices somewhat limited, I went with a drink called "Friday I'm In Love": vodka, citrus, strawberry, mint, and bubbles. It looked beautiful when it arrived to the table and was a palate pleaser with sour, sweet, and minty flavors. They have weekly specials, classic-type cocktails, and what they call "happy meals" - a beer and shot combination. Don't fear, though, they still have Budweiser, Bud Lite, Miller High Life, and other draft beers for those feeling more traditional Upper Valley. We also ordered one of their charcuterie boards that featured local selections of cheese and meats, olives, pickled vegetables, cured mustards, and a baguette. A great selection but like most of Wolf Tree, a little on the expensive side. Overall I enjoyed my first trip to Wolf Tree and I'm glad hip places like this exist in the Upper Valley.

It's a rum based drink with carrot, ginger and pineapple juices as well as sesame. My friends got the Knife Fight which was a bourbon based drink with lemon ginger pineapple. Tasted like a gingery whiskey sour. If I'm in town again I'll stop by and try something else. Not sure if this is normal or if their AC was broken but it was super hot inside.

Drive 5 minutes over the state line to Putnam's in White River Junction, Vermont for that sommelier-staffed experience. Love the ambience and rigorous focus on elevated, quality ingredients, at Putnam's. They have a corkboard-covered 3-ring binder menu which is aptly named a Field Guide. Trust me, this name is earned by the Tasting Notes alone. The field guide is like a thesis for advanced Upper Valley sippers, Vermont or not. If you forgot your book or paper, just saddle up to the Putnam's Field Guide. You'll find an elaborate offering of editorial descriptions of beverages from wine to martinis (6 kinds) to beer and whiskey (one from Japan). Btw, it's rare to find a wine bar that doubles as a gorgeous coffeehouse serving pastries, espresso-based drinks, teas and breakfast sandwiches on weekends. I'm looking forward to enjoying them sometime if I'm back. The offering at Putnam's Vineyard rotates seasonally, so I will describe what was there on my visits. Visit their website for updated menu surprises. As for the evening and weekends Fall menu, they call their offering Picnic Food. It's a modest title for an extensive offering of appetizers and a few sandwiches. Think fancied-up olives, pretzels, Brazilian cheese puffs, a craft beer mix, 2 melty sammies with Vermont cheeses (1 with turkey, the other veggies), beet and chevre arancini, dips and a vast selection of desserts. Vermont cheeses, apricots, Marcona almonds, dried apricots and crostini are looking divine on the cheese board. Oh, and there's also Superbon Madrid potato chips with Osetra caviar and a mini spirit of Gaston Chiquet champagne. Just saying. There is also a weekend brunch menu with bagels and egg sandwiches. As for the wine, I recommend a flight at Putmam's. In the fall season, these flight offerings were named: the Bella Blanca Wine Flight, the Falling Leaves Mixed Wine Flight, Fireside Reds Red Wine Flight, The Forgotten Bunches Mixed Wine Flight and the almighty and an unforgettable Sparkler Flight. In this flight, I slowly savoured 3 wine sparklers at $25 total. (And no, I cannot spell savour without a "u.") These wine flights are a true value. And here are the wines in the sparkler flight: 1.) Cava 2021 by Avinyó 2.) Crémant de Bourgogne Sparkling Brut Rosé NV by Albert Bichot 3.) Lambrusco by Villa Castellazo ROTA The Cava is everything. All three were delightful and I showed up needing warm fuzzies on an evening where there was live music so the total experience was extra lovely. There is also a whiskey flight! The coffee and craft beverages selection for the fall/winter menu includes a nitro cold brew, a brown butter latte with Maldon sea salt and biscotti and a FROLA New Orleans style cold brew slushie with maple syrup and coconut cream. To any craft and coffee beverage you can add Vermont Ice Cream Coffee Liqueur or Whistle Pig Piggy Back Bourbon. Yes, please. If you are making a trip of it, catch the local bbq joint across the way from Putnam's at lunch and then visit the wine bar for drinks. Layer up, because I've been nippy there twice, and then linger over one delightful beverage after the next. Oh, and there is a charming wine shop at Putnam's with handmade gifts to peruse, as well.
