We were in town for our family members graduation from nearby Norwich university. Was hungry so look for a place locally on our way to Woodstock. We went there on a Saturday and there was a large party already seated foods not out yet. There were a couple guys at the bar in another couple sitting by the bar area. There was only one waitress. She was kind and polite and got her order. It took a little longer for our food to come probably we came at a time when they were shortstaffed. I can see that this was a veteran owned establish Schmidt. The decor and ambience inside was comfortable and homie and I can see why the locals would love coming here. We ordered the local favorite the mushroom toast, which was very good. The chicken sandwich can be a little more moist, however. The fries were slightly over cooked. They were a brown color, but crunchy and when we were hungry, it tasted OK with ketchup. We also had the onion soup. I can see why the locals love this place because it is clean and cozy ambience I can imagine during the winter months that it would be a great place to go hang out. read more

I had a really disappointing experience at The Forge Restaurant. We came in as a large group with a reservation, so it was surprising (and honestly frustrating) to find that there was only one waitress and one cook working the entire place. To be fair, our waitress did an excellent job given the situation--she was doing everything she could and stayed professional the whole time. The issue was clearly with management not staffing appropriately, especially knowing a large group was coming in. Unfortunately, the service delays were significant. We waited about an hour and a half for our food, and when it finally arrived, more than half of the meals were cold. To make matters worse, one of the kids in our group was served raw chicken tenders at the end of the meal, which is completely unacceptable and concerning from a food safety standpoint. Overall, this was a very frustrating experience, and due to the long wait, poor food quality, and lack of proper staffing, I won't be returning. read more

I like this place a lot! My daughter and I stopped in here for dinner on Sunday August 10th 2025. The decor is simple and clean. The bacon cheeseburger was tasty and came with perfectly cooked hand-cut fries. My daughter said the chicken fingers were some of the best she's ever tasted and I would agree. I made lunch reservations for 12 on Friday for lunch for the following day. We came with 15 people. We were not expected when we got there and nothing was set up for us. We waited 1 and 1/2 hours for our food. The meals came out 2 at a time and one meal was always cold. The beef tips were cold, burgers were either cold or hot, chicken strips were raw and one order of them had uncooked raw breading. The black bean burger was overcooked. There were no more than 6 customers there besides us, but the chef was not able to keep up with 15 people. Excellent, laid back, informal yet a bit upscale eatery in ski country, very near the I-91 corridor. Even if they need better planning.... But more later.... Randolph is a quaint town, close to Killington, Saskadena Six, Sugarbush, Mad River, Bolton and Stowe. It would be a great stop for an after ski dinner going back home, or a rendezvous after hiking, climbing or just a fun get together. There are two fairly large rooms, one of which is a pub and the other a restaurant more or less. We got here as we wanted to get together at a convenient place with family coming from Stowe and we were on our way from the Lake Sunapee area, so Yelp guided us to Randolph. We made reservations for 6:30 and they were honored on the spot. There were only four other tables occupied in the premises. The food was superb. The pork belly appetizers were just sticky sweet and absolutely delicious. Their French Onion Soup was simply delicious. One of us had the Prime Rib and he was licking his fingers with delight. Three of us had the Fish and Chips and they too, were delicious, a huge slab of exquisitely breaded fish with mounds of French Fries. They have more root beers than a grocery store. And their selection of local brews is above par. Service was outstanding. Our server was a young man who excelled at his trade. Truly outstanding. So... then you ask - why only four stars if it was such a good place? Well, let's hear the rest of the story. We first started with appetizers, asking for the spinach and artichoke dip. Two minutes later the waitperson comes and says they're out of it. So we order the cauliflower tempura. Two minutes later a nice staff member comes by and says they're out of it. Then she erases two or three menu items from the board. So we then order the pork belly appetizer and finally they had that. We then order the roast beef sandwich as just and they are out of it, highly recommended by the waiter.... It started resembling an SNL skit and I had flashbacks of John Belushi's "Cheeseburger" skit. Seriously.... At 6:30 PM.... Despite the lack of food management, we had an excellent time. Was in Randolph for a post surgery visit and wanted to check out local fare, hoping to find a fried haddock, not cod (haddock is sweeter, iMO) . The Forge is conveniently tucked away off of Main Street and is clearly a local favorite, as at 5pm, parking area was pretty full. Despite all the cars, once inside, however, there was ample seating still available. I had wanted to sit at the bar, but as it was full, the bartender kindly got me a server for a high top. The server came over swiftly and with a welcoming smile and almost southern level of hospitality, got me all set up. I ordered the fried fish and chips and it did not disappoint. It was a generous cut of haddock, lightly breaded and delicately fried (no grease) on a large plate of hand cut fries. I normally don't like tartar sauce, but I liked theirs. I really enjoyed my prime rib,cooked to perfection and the carrots and mashed potatoes were definetly homemade. Tasted like my French grandmother would have cooked it. What a great find for dinner on our way home from vacation. Just a few minutes off of the interstate. Definitely follow your map app because Prince Street twists around & under itself. We ate in the "bar" which was a very laid back atmosphere. There is also a quiet "dining room" up front. Great burgers! The scallops with garlic butter sauce was very tasty. My first time. Had plans for a celebration fall through, so I chose The Forge. There are two rooms. One has a bar, band, and tables. The other where I sat, had a pellet stove, and tables and chairs. I could still hear the band, and it was loud enough to enjoy, but not too loud to have a conversation. The server was prompt, friendly and attentive. I was able to order one of last week's specials. This was the surf and turf. The steak was tender, juicy, and cooked perfectly. The shrimp was cooked well, with enough garlic to make its presence known, but not overwhelming. Mashed potatoes were real potatoes. The only issue was that the grilled broccoli was a tad overcooked, but delicious. I'm sorry it took so long for me to finally visit this place. Came to this town when we were staying at the local campground. Found The Forge the first night! What a wonderful place. Very warm and inviting environment. Friendly servers and obvious that it's enjoyed by locals too. The food is spectacular! Chicken schnitzel (pork is offered as a special) fish and chips are soo good! Plentiful servings. So we are here on an RV trip and came to this restaurant/bar on the recommendation of the campground. AMAZING is all I have to say. Our server (& the only server we could find) was Mandy. She was fantastic! She was attentive to our party of 6 as well as every other table in the place. The ambiance isn't much, but the food and service were out of this world! I had butternut squash ravioli with cranberries and walnuts and my husband had the chicken parm. Both AMAZING!! Others at our table raved about their shrimp scampi and scallop scampi. Before coming, I checked the yelp review and saw the low score, but I still came to try the food out and I'm very happy I made that decision. For the late time that we came, the staff was really kind and the food was VERY good. I had nothing to complain about for any of the dishes we had; it was truly high quality food. Also, the waiter was AMAZING. she would come to our table often to ask us if we needed anything. The restaurant also has good lighting and clean bathrooms. Given the Randolph area's lack of dining venues, a new restaurant opening in town is usually an occasion for celebration. I called The Forge to inquire if I needed a reservation and spoke to one of the owners. He assured me that mid-week there would be no problem. When we arrived, the parking lot was full but we soon learned that was from bar patrons, not diners. No one greeted us when we arrived and we waited a few minutes until a harried-looking woman showed up and took us to our seats. There were two other parties when we arrived at 5:30 pm--we were planning to go to a movie in town with a 7:30 start time and we wanted to leave enough time to enjoy our meal. I had taken time to read the menu that was posted online and planned my meal in advance since I'm on a diet. Our waitress showed up promptly and immediately informed us that 2 of the appetizers listed as specials were not available-- this was at 5:30 pm. Several of the items that were on the menu shown online were not available either. The restaurant had only been open a few weeks and they had taken the time to publish glowing reviews online but apparently not their accurate menu. So I decided to order an appetizer and salad. 45 minutes later we were still waiting for our dinner. People were going in and out of the bar area and appetizers were being served while we waited to even catch a glimpse of our waitress. When we finally saw her, we told her we needed to make the show at the movies and she apologized for the slow kitchen (not really her fault) and brought our bill so we wouldn't have to wait when we got ready to pay. Finally our food arrived. When I unrolled the napkin-wrapped cutlery, all I had was a small fork meant for dessert and a butter knife. My crab/shrimp "cakes" were about the size of small cookies and about that flat. They were overcooked, dark from excess grease and had sat so long that the greens under them were wilted. Tasteless as well. The salad was standard greens, pale tomato and cucumber. The vinaigrette was so sharp that it made me choke. My husband had breaded chicken that was too spicy for him-- nothing on the menu indicated that level of heat-- and overcooked. Let me tell you, it's hard to overcook anything for my husband, he likes his meat very well done. Watery, overcooked 'seasonal' veggies accompanied this and mashed potatoes. We did see one of the owners in the dining room. He visited one table, apparently friends, and ignored everyone else. When our waitress came to process our payment, she asked how the food was and I said "Terrible". She apologized (again, not her fault) but did not even offer to tell the owner or chef of our displeasure. We decided to cut our losses and left without coffee or dessert. In the local newspaper article written about The Forge that I read before I wrote this review, I should have been wary when it seemed that the dining function was an afterthought to the bar, added when the new owner discovered that there was a kitchen. The dishes offered were a hodgepodge of cuisines and it was definitely not pub food. This restaurant space has seen about half a dozen attempts to house a restaurant and none of them has succeeded. The Forge will succeed simply because it's the only bar left in town but do yourself a favor and don't go there for the food. read more
