We stayed at Castle Inn in Vermont and decided to try the restaurant during our visit. Overall, it was just okay and a bit below my expectations. For a starter, I ordered the shrimp cocktail. It was fine, though the shrimp were a bit rubbery. My entrée was the beef Wellington. The pastry outside was crisp, but the steak inside lacked seasoning and didn't have much flavor. The service was friendly but slow. There was only one server covering four or five tables at the same time, which made it hard to keep up, especially since the dining room was fairly busy. I understand it may be off-season, but one server for a full room wasn't enough. It wasn't a terrible experience, but it wasn't great either. With some improvements to seasoning and staffing, it could be much better. read more

Come to Castle Hill for the ambience. Intimate dining rooms set in an English style manor home built in 1905. Fine dining here is a conservative affair. All of the dishes are classics and the kitchen doesn't take any risks. Our filet mignon needed a bit more sear and the lamb ribs had a tasty mustard crust but not enough of it. Everything needed more seasoning. Especially the steamed vegetables, which were served plain and really needed something to bring out the flavor. Not a bad dining experience, but has the potential to be so much more, especially at this high end price point. read more

We have now stayed at both the Pointe hotel and the condos by the spa, but this was our first visit to the restaurant. During ski season you definitely need a reservation, and they close fairly early. The building is beautiful, lots of history- it was the old governors mansion. Food was excellent- we were not sure what to expect, we shared some appetizers, then had the lamp cops and the beef wellington1 both were great, good portions, meat was perfectly cooked, and well paired sides. Before and after dinner we had a drink in the library and they had a man playing some traditional guitar music while we sat there- a very nice evening. read more

My wife and I had dinner at this establishment on 11/16 and plan to have Thanksgiving there this afternoon. Our first experience was excellent, and thus, our return for Thanksgiving. Dinner began with a beautifully set table next to the fireplace. Our server, Sam, was both pleasant and professional. After a short conversation, Sam explained which entrees would compliment our tastes. I had the chicken; my wife had the lamb. We asked to please have it cooked to medium. The chef butterflied the same steak and it came out rare. Asked again for the steak to be medium and the same steak came back completely burnt/charred and inedible. It's beyond me that a fine dining chef cannot properly cook a medium steak. I've loved coming here for decades. Ownership has changed several times and people have come and gone but the food has been consistently excellent, the atmosphere is elegant but comfortable and the service is spot on. Everything about the Castle is special. This doesn't have to be a special occasion place. Sure, it's not inexpensive, but much more casual places in less comfortable setting are just as expensive. Our last time here we tried the fixed price options. I had the best escargot I've ever had, a decent lobster and corn chowder and a fantastic bone in filet mignon. My wife enjoyed a beet salad and a cedar plank salmon with lobster risotto. Beer selection was decent and the wine list is excellent. Service was as good as it gets and the setting is incomparable. The carelessness shown for takeout items turned us off to spending that much money on clearly mediocre food...sliced chicken in the flatbread was HUUGE. Attention to detail is clearly nonexistent here. I've worked in fine dining kitchens...this is unacceptable. Frozen fries from the same vendor a two star would serve? Laughable. Beets weren't fresh in the salad and I was DIGGING for goat cheese. Nonexistent. Don't waste your money here. And to Castle Hill: not all of your customers haven't been in the kitchen. I dined here with my cousins over the past weekend. The facility is beautiful, the staff knowledgable & just the right level of attentive, the food was delicious and the presentation was suburb. From the moment we walked into the front entry & were greeted by the sounds of the piano player to the chef going above & beyond to prepare off-the menu gluten-free/vegan dishes for my cousins, the experience was a delight (just call & ask in advance & you will be amazed at what he whips up). This is not an everyday kind of place as the pricing reflects the quality of the food & service & ambience, but it should be at the top of anyone's list in the area for a special evening or a dining experience to impress. read more

Service was okay, appetizers were great (escargot and muscles), salads were on point. (Orange cranberry marmalade tart salad and classic Cesar salad) However both the Halibut and the Lamb entrees had nice presentation but where pretty much flavorless. Although the menu described the lamb to have a mint rosemary reduction, there was no seasoning whatsoever, tasted like roasted meat. The rice and crab cake under the halibut tasted like warmed leftovers. We did not even eat more than a few bites each. I was served wine in a dirty glass. Mediocre at best. We were there on a very quiet Monday night for a birthday party that had been pre- arranged months in advance. we had a private room for appetizers and a private room for dinner and with a party of 10, there should have been no excuses for anything other than exemplary. but it wasn't even close. Service was OK, but you would think with almost no one else in the place that all of our food would come concurrently and someone would help our server put the food in front of us. Yet, at one point 6 of us ere staring at plates waiting for the last two to be served. Really? As to food, it was really meh, especially for the price of $58 for a three course prix fixe. At no time during the evening did anyone go, "Boy this is delicious." And we are all world travelers and sophisticated foodies. Specifically, my shrimp cocktail was OK, the corn and lobster chowder fair. But my rack of lamb, ordered medium and specifically ordered to be pink in the middle, was well done and tasteless. I cold have sent it back, but why make everyone else at the table feel bad about eating whiel I sat there. My wife had the trio of scallops (fair, not great), lobster (meh) and steak (best thing on the plate). In all, a totally disappointing evening food- wise. Luckily, the company was great. read more

Now this restaurant is located in a beautifully restored mansion up on a hill near the Pointe Hotel. This mansion was the brainchild of former governor of Vermont - Allen Miller Fletcher, which, btw is a fabulous place to stay when in Vermont. I would give this place 5 stars for the ambiance and decor. Together they are an outstanding combination. At the same time there is a convergence of historic, romantic and countryside swank. The Beautiful architecture & well maintained landscaping is a sight to see especially if your interested in historical residences of the turn of the century. Onto the waitstaff, they were friendly, accommodating & attentive. When we first arrived there and were seated with a few other patrons in the dining room, it was soo quiet that it became uncomfortable, b/c conversation could be overheard between patrons loudly & clearly. But as we began a three course meal classical music began playing in the background and this made it much more comfortable to chat & fill up the deadening silence. I ordered the prefixed meal. The 1st course was baked escargot florentine w/ garlic galliano butter, brunoise veggies & toast points which was buttery, rich, a bit salty and quite good. The toast points were a nice little addition that enhanced the eating experience. The 2nd part of the meal I chose was the French onion soup au gratin which came out piping hot and was delicious, especially with the crusty bread dipped inside. It consisted of a vegetable broth, Cabot cheese and herb crouton. The hot melted cheese was thick, rich and simply amazing. Possibly b/c the cheese is so local. The last course was The Castle Trio which came with a small grilled lobster tail, petite strip steak, jumbo dry sea scallops, tomato leek fondue and beurre blanc. Now I was underwhelmed by the seared scallops in the beurre blanc sauce. I felt that the scallops were not enhanced by the flavors. The lobster was quite small and dry, not juicy & tender. The tomato leek fondue ruined the taste of the lobster meat. The strip steak which I ordered medium-well done was divine. It was soo delicious, cooked & salted perfectly. If I were you I would stay away from the seafood and order your meat based dishes cause you won't regret it. Overall a good experience and I also had an underwhelming gin martini. But it was well made up w/ a follow up tropical martini drink I ordered. If you stay at the pointe they will give you a 25$ voucher towards the prefixed dinner, which is kool. read more

My husband and I have frequented this gem numerous times this summer while we were living here. The atmosphere is quaint and charming, and the service and the food are the best you will find in Ludlow. They have a great pre fixe menu with tons of options. My hands down favorite are the mussels appetizer. My husband says the lamb chops are they best he's had (request mint jelly as they do not serve it automatically). We don't understand how anybody can write negative reviews on this place because without exception it's the best food within 50 miles. read more

Main courses will start at $50 and if you get your discount from the hotel, it can not be used unless the whole party is ordering off the menu rather than the 3 course prefix menu. The food was incredible. My boyfriend and I split the New England corn and lobster chowder and I would go back 100 times just for the soup! Awful!! mashed potatoes/strange rough consistency,not smooth. pasta overcooked to verge of being mushy. Overcooked risotto (but salty nonetheless). Seriously- if you are going to rock a shi-shi menu with Boston pricing, please be conscientious enough to get the details correct Chef. Great locale & staff. creme brulee desserts were ok,chocolate cake was dry. Disappointing considering the lack cooking finesse, other venues or choices and the steep price points. The home has been kept in wonderful shape, the woodwork, hand molded plaster ceilings and beautiful fireplaces make you feel like you are in a different era. First of all I would say that this restaurant is NOT overpriced. It's good food, nice presentation and 48-65 dollars for three good courses. I was with a friend and we dined on the Sunday prior to Valentine's Day (Feb 12). Most of the people seated in our room were couples, exception being one large party, it was snowing heavily and the town and restaurant seemed a little bit busier than they expected to be on this Sunday. With that said. There was a woman who was hosting and bartending and just all around helping out the waitress and the atmosphere. Theses two women were waiting on more than 10 tables by my estimation. They worked well together and I will say that if one of them wasn't the boss, the boss really should have been there lending a hand. Although they were very busy we had attentive, timely, friendly service. Perhaps the front of house was short handed but the back of house executed well and everyone's food looked great. My bone in filet was slightly overcooked and I wished I got the trio w lobster tail as that steak was substantial. The lamb my friend had was on point however and a healthy portion. I was surprised to fine such a place where food and atmosphere come together so well. As part of our Ski and Stay package at the Point, we got a $25 coupon off the prix fix dinner. Dinner is pricey there but so worth the money. Dinner is also VERY EARLY! BE warned by my post. The kitchen closes at 8:15-8:30pm!!!! We got there just about 8:20pm and the server had to check with the kitchen if they could accommodate us. Dinner starts at 5pm. Early. The food was so surprisingly amazing: french cuisine with a vermont twist. The bread was piping hot. The crust was crispy but yet had an al dente quality to it. the bread white was soft and tender. Butter just melted at the very touch of the piping hot steam from the bread. First course was a dense lump crab cake. The crab cake I had had serious chunks of white crab meat that was cooked to the point where the meat bounced back but was not chewy and was not like liquid. My partner had the mussels. The broth that bathed the mussels was so delicious that we not only tried to sop of every ounce with bread, but we just took a spoon and drank it down. Next course was something called Oval Salad. Baby spinach with this cute little cheese pie. The added flavour not only comes from the gently sweet dressing but also the tart dried cranberries. Finally, we enjoyed the main courses. My partner had a Beef Wellington and I had the Salmon. I only took a few delicious bites of the Salmon because I was so Painfully full. I had to save my Salmon for the next day. The few bites I had was great. The Salmon was soft in the mouth but cooked well and the flavour was smokey hickory wood. The Beef Wellington was juicy and the crust was crisp. Let me just say that the next day, that salmon, without re-heating, remained still so amazingly tastey that I didn't share much with my partner. Too bad. With the backdrop of the snowy mountains and a castle, the ambience was romance up until they started closing up at 10pm. Then the beautiful grand oak and granite building became a little spooky. The piano man, Tom, played soft tunes that are somewhat recognizable: Moonlight Sonata, Casablanca, and that tune from Charlie Brown. He was friendly and a little hard of hearing. French decor and candles with lush tapestry made our corner next to the fireplace cosy and glamourous at the same time. Service was perfectly helpful and not intrusive. The cost: $57 for the Beef Wellington and $49 for the Salmon. Don't worry, the dessert was included. We had carrot cake and creme brule. It was done well. read more

Came here for my boy friends 26th birthday. Food was amazing 60$ each for 3 courses which is not bad at all! I was full after the first and couldn't believe I had 2 more meals to go. Diane was our waitress and she was amazing. Very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. We tipped her extra because of how extra caring she was. The French onion soup was to die for. My chicken was cooked perfectly and every Piece had perfect crispy skin on it. My boy friend got the beef Wellington which he said was amazing. Mussel appetizer was good, well seasoned but a number were closed, clearly the cooks did not check. Corn and Lobster chowder was quite good. Castle trio (lobster tail, sirloin and scallops)was pedestrian. Lobster was overcooked as were the scallops (rubbery). They got the sirloin right ( med rare) but the quality of the cut was poor and the sauce was horrible. The mashed potatoes were actually quite good. Dessert, a baileys and creme cake was fine but not exceptional. Not really worth the price. read more

My wife and I had a dismal time at The Castle. Right from the start the entertainment system did not work, it took over 5 hours and a post 10pm visit from the staff to finally resolve. We stayed in the midst of an oppressive heat wave in July and found the A/C to be faulty. This issue was never resolved despite multiple complaints. The Castle markets themselves as a premium lodging facility. My wife and I have traveled the world and never found a facility to be so deaf to customers' complaints. We had to make contact with the staff on multiple occasions for multiple issues. I emailed the General Manager after my stay informing him of our experience. He was kind enough to apologize, but not an offer of concession of our $269 per night charges. We understand things occur and mistakes will happen and we are accepting of that. The issues of our stay were well beyond acceptable mistakes. My wife and I find it appalling The Castle made no gesture based on the unacceptable conditions we stayed in. The Ludlow region is beautiful, it's a shame The Castle doesn't represent the quality the region has to offer. read more

The lobster bisque tasted like its base was made from the gravy. The service was also mediocre. The waitress brought warm bread at the beginning of the meal but didn't bring any butter. My husband's birthday celebration had to include Castle Hill Restaurant. It has become one of our favorite restaurants. Excellent choice of pre fix menu! My son loves escargot and was extremely happy with his appetizer choice. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection. Very decadent flourless chocolate cake for dessert. To top off the evening they had a piano player who was able to mix in Pink Flyod, Greatful Dead , and The Doors into traditional dinner music. My husband, who plays piano loved it.
