Update: Update: just had one of the best steaks I have ever had. I've been to the original Palm, The Capital Grill, Smith and Wollensky, Ruth's Chis. Mitchell's, and others and this steak beat some of them as was just as good as the others. A 20 oz ribeye done medium rare ( yes, some went home with me) accompanied by a simple arugula salad topped with shaved Parmesan and a light lemon dressing and spiced fingerling potatoes cut in half. Fabulous. I got lucky they were out of the 40 oz porterhouse (I could never as my spouse and I do not share a preference for med rare) and substituted the ribeye. My advice is put that ribeye on the menu! Older Review: Always delightful. Their food is consistently very tasty snd their service uniformly timely and delightful. The outside seating has cover from rain and heaters when chilly. Everything we have ordered has been well-prepared and delicious. An ever revolving door of chefs! Inconsistent and inedible the past couple of yrs. The prime rib was a usually a staple and now only available on Saturday. Which means locals have to endure tourists and reservations, since the midweek option is gone the way of the dodo bird! You think after Jay Eastman (Eastman Kodak) spent all that money to rehab, he'd put some care into how it's run and the quality of well the food! Guess not! It's a yearly tradition to come up to Vermont to engage in Autumnal activities, so we figured we deserved at least one nice dinner to celebrate. Johnny Seesaw's seemed like the perfect place, having been a fixture of the community for the better part of a hundred years. Reservations were not easy to come by, so we settled for 8:30PM for 4 people and snacked until then. We had heard great things about a former chef who had returned to the establishment and were eager to give it a try. The interior felt like a cozy log cabin (makes sense since it's a lodge) in a ski resort with a fake open-air fireplace in the middle of the restaurant. Our waiter was a friendly and attentive gentleman who was nice to talk to. We went with glasses of wine as well as the bourbon + candied ginger and gin + blood orange house cocktail as refreshments; both were well balanced and smooth, but you could still taste the alcohol. For starters, we got the crab crostini, Panzanella salad, and freshly baked focaccia with eggplant spread. The crab crostini had interesting textural elements from the balance of the freshly shaved chilis atop the succulent crab meat that was piled atop a crispy crostini bread slice; I'd definitely get this again. My companions said the salad was fresh, while the focaccia and spread were a good way to start the meal, though I'm not sure if it were something I'd seek out again. For mains, we went with: Sauteed Sea Scallops (cauliflower puree, spinach, brown butter lemon emulsion, crispy potatoes); Spinach Cappelletti (filled with braised beef short ribs, chippolini onion brodo, and parmigiano); and Tagliatelle all'Bolognese (beef and pork ragu, parmigiano). My scallops were perfectly cooked so that they still had a lightness to them that absorbed the delectable sauce that was paired, and the sides that it came with felt gourmet -- though it was confusing why it was labelled as sauteed when it was clearly seared (and perfectly so). Another naming error existed for the pasta dish because the sauce was not a red ragu sauce, which is what would have been expected -- it was delicious, nonetheless. Lastly, just a heads up that the Spinach Cappelletti felt more like a vegetarian dish since the filling's meat flavour couldn't really be sensed, and another note is that the wetness from the veggies created a pool of liquid which was a missed opportunity to become a nice sauce. For dessert, we shared a slice of olive oil cake which had a flavourful, but light sweet cream that resembled a marscapone of sorts -- no complaints except I wasn't hungry enough to indulge in more than one bite. Overall, a really stellar meal that felt more upscale than casual but still comfortable and cozy. Well worth the money to shell out, but the menus could be more accurate in their descriptions. read more

Can be VERY crowded so plan ahead. Make a reservation if you are up for a busy weekend. Food is getting better. It's been up and down the last couple of years. We are local, so believe me, we want it to succeed. Staff can get testy sometimes. We were told there were plenty of seats at the bar but it was obvious the most folks wanted an empty seat between each group. Are you crazy? If the place is busy people have to sit next to each other. So we can't worry about cooties! read more

Having lived for 45 years in a bedroom community to NYC, I have been privileged to enjoy many dining experiences in various parts of the city. I learned early on that the upscale dining venues meant small beautiful platters of well prepared food at high prices. You were paying for ambience and experience. My wife and I recently stopped for dinner at Johnny Seesaw's on the way back from a visit to Dartmouth. I quickly had a Déjà vu flash dining here. In the mountains of Vermont, in a very well appointed, pretty rustic restaurant this upscale Italian venue served impressive offerings of most food I could not pronounce, but which featured fresh delicious sounding ingredients. While we were there on a Tuesday and the vaunted Prime Rib I had heard about was not available the only other steak offering was a 40 ounce Porterhouse for $120.00. Not a reality. I did order a delicious scallop dinner and my wife had duck which she enjoyed. The dinners featured 5 scallops a few baby asparagus stalks and what appeared to be a potato chip. The duck was that with what appeared to be polenta. Tasty but sparse. Had there been perhaps a bread service or side salad included with the meal we would probably have left the restaurant satisfied instead of hungry. The food was delicious, beautifully plated, served efficiently and pleasantly and just as with NYC dining, at an impressive price. This is a fine restaurant. I recommend having a good lunch if you go here for dinner. I would happily rate this as a five star experience except when I left, I was hungry and that is not right. read more

The restaurant was rustically charming. Large fireplace in dining room not lit due to the season but probably sensational in the winter. Large tree beams support the roof. Food was excellent. I had seared Faroe island Salmon perfectly cooked with broccolini, black rice and carrot purée. My wife had the pasta bolognese which I didn't try but she said was delicious. We had the corn and crab fritters with an aioli sauce as an appetizer which also was delicious though could have had a bid more crab. Portions were large. Stayed at the lodge and had to try the restaurant! The bolognese was delicious and filling! For the appetizer, we got the hummus. The pita bread was made fresh, it paired really well with the hummus. My family was recently in Vermont for a fall weekend getaway. We needed a Saturday night dinner spot for 6 diners and I was able to secure a late reservation at Johnny Seesaw's. The restaurant has a modern and cozy vibe. We were seated under a cool mural that was originally painted 80 years ago. Our waitress Emily mentioned that she recently started working there but was a true professional throughout the meal. The menu has a lot of nice choices. I really enjoyed the poutine appetizer, the duck gravy, cheese curds, and fries were perfect together. My wife enjoyed the beet salad and my daughters liked the pretzel appetizer. I went with the halibut special and was very happy with the way it was prepared. The rest of my family was also happy with their entrees. Came here for dinner last night with my wife and two young children. The staff was amazing helping us to quickly serve the kids in an effort to keep them occupied while at an otherwise higher end restaurant where you would hate for the kids to get loud. Our food was delicious, we had two of the house made pastas. The overall vibe here is one of if not the best in the local area (Stratton, Bromley). We came as a group of seven. I ordered the prime rib which was awful. The mash potatoes were clumpy, and I've never seen so much fat on a piece of meat (see Pic for reference). All of it was sitting in some watery sauce which was not the juice from the meat being cooked. Two in our group ordered the risotto which was curiously bereft of flavor. As if the risotto was cooked with water vs. stock. The risotto tasted like cardboard with canned vegetables. One order was the ribeye that was very medium rare at best instead of medium. It was accompanied by a relatively bland sauce and fairly vanilla vegetables. However, the staff was friendly and our server was nice and kindly received feedback pertaining to the risotto which was sent back. Been here a few times with my family. The decor inside is very warm and inviting and the outside is very picturesque with a large pond and fire pit. Food overall is tasty. However, the portion size is very small (duck). I Ordered the duck entrée and as a petite woman I was still hungry after eating the whole meal. I was disappointed when the waiter brought my entrée to the table with two small slices of duck breast along with a few pieces of vegetables. Price point is similar to other restaurants around the area however, for a duck entrée at The Social House, which is nearby, they are far more generous. read more

I live nearby, and this is our go to quick evening out. There are always tables except on busy holiday weekends. Everybody's really nice and I love the old Timey history of the building with the murals and the enormous center fireplace.. The food is very good as well. Don't come here if you want artfully presented and curated plates, but you will be delighted with their food the steaks, the fish, the poutine (an appetizer??), the desserts are all very good. Truly a place fitting to the neighborhood . We love it. The bar scene is good as well. The drinks are ample and stiff! Friends of mine, who have young kids like to take their families down to the hut in the spring mmer, which has a pond nearby and simple food like beers burgers and fries. We were so disappointed. We had been to the restaurant 25 years earlier (We live in CA.) At that time it was a 5 star place. After we sat down, we asked for bread. The waitress said "The chef didn't make bread today" Ok. I ordered the chicken. half of it was cool and the other half was warm. I spoke with the waitress and she took the chicken back to the chef, a few minutes later she emerged with a fresh plate of chicken. It was a little warmer on one side but again the other side was cool. I spoke to the waitress again (by that time my husband was finished with his meal) I told her I didn't want it and she took it off the ticket. We then ordered apple desert, it was luke warm as well. The waitress was less than caring, she didn't bother to inform management. I told her I was very disappointed in the entire meal and I was surpised management didn't at least come by to ask about it. She said " I didn't tell management, but I will go get him now. The manager was somewhat apologetic but didn't really appear to care that we had a terrible meal. I can honestly say, Johnny Seesaw's is well-balanced. After a three-year renovation, they reopened the restaurant. They did an excellent job. The atmosphere is rustic, yet upscale. The menu is diverse and caters to both the carnivore and the vegan. It is definitely on the expensive side for the area. When you drive in, the building is on the left and parking is to the right. The restaurant isn't labeled well. See the attached picture of the restaurant building. You will know you are in the right place when you see the hours posted and the credit card sticker in the window. They are closed Tuesday and Wednesday. We were a party of 10 and were sat in a semi-private room. The appetizers were the big hit with the table, while the entrees were good. I had the hanger steak with meh sauce. The steak was cooked exactly as ordered. The appetizer hits were the fried pickles with a really nice sauce (a bit like Russian dressing), the soft pretzel with whole grain mustard sauce (although the pretzel was a bit too greasy), a crazy-awesome spicy porgy ceviche special, and the poutine. The poutine is a Vermont take on poutine (don't expect a Canadian version), but it was very good, if you don't have expectations. Very nice selection of beers on tap, and they also had a root beer on tap for the kids (and young at heart). Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be going back. We are all so happy they reopened and that they did such a great job with the renovation. read more

What the hell happened. I've going here since the reopening and it has been amazing. Go pretty much every Friday during the winter. Went back during the summer and new staff, new menu, new chef = bad. Food is now mediocre at best. New staff not as welcoming or friendly. New menu is not as good and half the items. What the hell happened? This was one of my favorite places to eat when up at Bromley. Now it's just straight up not good food and hugely overpriced. Had a table next to fireplace which was nice but the person with their back to the door got a freezing cold draft every time the door opened . Our waitress was nice but we felt rushed through the whole meal . She recommended the Wiener schnitzel . The Silver Fork was full for a month and we decided to give Johnny Seesaw's a shot. I am so glad we did. Much of the former JS's was deconstructed and put back into thoughtful places throughout the new structure. My wife spent a lot of time up here as a kid and was pretty nostalgic about all of the details. The food was one of the best meals we've had north of NYC. Truly special in flavor, presentation, and overall quality. Please try the venison! It was amongst the best cut, temperature, and quality I've had. My wife raved about the butternut squash soup and fried pickles. Our server, Syna, was a delight. She was so friendly, engaging, and fun. She had a uniquely in-depth understanding of the menu and made wonderful suggestions. She made our meal even better. I always appreciate someone who goes the extra mile to make your time there special. Overall, we will be back. We are looking forward to going back. Tried JS for the first time last night. Loved the lodge interior and the porch. Due to the pandemic we made reservations for the porch. Nice setting, overhead heating kept you very cozy. We had planned to order burgers but found out that you could only order those if you sat at the bar. We both got the bolognese which was delicious. We thought our dinner would be served with bread but it wasn't. I asked the waiter and he said he would put an order in for us. There was a slight charge which was fine but this should be on the menu so we could have simply ordered it with our meal. Overall it's pricey. Would like to see a couple less pricey options. My family and I have been going here for over a decade. It has changed owners since we originally started coming here, and unfortunately it has been slowly going downhill. The menu is nowhere near as interesting as it used to be. About half of our entrees were good (enough), and the other half were very bland. I've never had salmon that tasted like air until tonight. Our server was very helpful and attentive, five stars for her. Drinks came fairly quickly but chef wouldn't fire appetizers until all of our food was in, which greatly rushes dinner. Coming from someone with restaurant industry experience - this isn't necessary and definitely makes dining with children more difficult. We will continue attempting to come here after skiing because of the nice vibe, but probably will just grab a drink and eat dinner elsewhere. read more

I didn't realize JS is a historic place until I found their Wikipedia page. We got the poutine appetizer. It's not healthy but perfect accompaniment for a round of beers. Big pile of fries, cheese curds, shredded duck breast and flavorful duck gravy. Wow, we couldn't stop eating it and left little room for our main course. read more
