While in Vermont for a long weekend, we decided to give Red Slate a try for dinner and we are still so grateful we did! We sat at the cozy bar overlooking the lodge's living room area with its roaring fireplace and enjoyed our generous and delicious drinks. Vinny hosted us with perfection, bringing out mouthwatering burgers with hand cut fries that were perfectly seasoned. The ambience around the bar was so inviting and we took in the football game and enjoyed chatting with the other guests and Vinny as well. All in all it was an experience we won't long soon forget! We visited Red Slate Restaurant on a visit to Manchester for shopping. It was Stick Season, so it was very quiet there. Only a few tables were set up in the dining room and only 1 waitress on Saturday night. We seated ourselves and waited a bit for the waitress to come. My daughter had one of the specialty drinks which she said was good. I had a soda. I have a gluten allergy and was happy to see they had gluten-free buns for the sandwiches and for burgers. I had a bacon cheeseburger on a gluten-free bun. I ordered my burger, medium rare, but it came through well done. The fries were not gluten-free, but I was able to substitute a side salad instead. My daughter had a turkey sandwich with fries. She said both were good - not spectacular - but good. The Red Slate restaurant was good. Not great, but decent meal at a fair price when there weren't very many restaurant options open during stick season. Best of all, I didn't get sick from any cross-contamination, and I appreciate that. read more

Since I was staying at the Upper Pass Lodge for my ski trip I figured I would give the Red Slate restaurant a try. Located in the lobby of the lodge is a small bar and a nice sized dining room. The decor is rustic and casual, with 5 or 6 tables with plenty of room. The restaurant is not open on Monday or Tuesday. The menu features American classics and prices are very reasonable. The night I was there they had a $10 build your own burger special that included fries and a beverage. Based on the server'sI suggestion I ordered the Fish and Chips. The Fish and Chips came out nicely presented on a rectangular plate, a large fillet of Haddock on top of a large portion of fries and small metal cups of coleslaw, ketchup, malt vinegar, and tarter sauce. The fish was nicely battered and fried resulting in a crispy crust and perfectly cooked fish. The fries were tasty and crisp and the coleslaw was very nice. Overall a very nice version of the classic. If you are in the Londonderry, Vt. area and looking for a good meal the Red Slate restaurant is a great option. Classic food well made at reasonable prices in a comfortable room. Well worth a visit. read more

We stayed in Londonderry VT for a mini-ski vacation. We ate at the Red Slate after being impressed with the reviews and receiving a recommendation from our hotel owner. The dinner was fabulous! I had the salmon and my husband had a gluten free burger with gf bun. The chef/owner followed my cooking request perfectly. It was the best salmon I have had in years. The waiter found a Heady Topper beer for my husband, even though it wasn't listed. The entire dinner bill was $48. Unbelievable! Highly, highly recommend!! read more

We were staying at Trailside Condominiums. After a day of skiing, I was too tired to drive any distance so we decided on Red Slate at Upper Pass lodge. Haven't been there in well over a year. In any case we were seated immediately & perused the menu. The menu is limited but it does have something for everyone. In my opinion better to have a good limited menu rather then an extensive lousy menu. I was grazing again. I had New England Clam Chowder & Chicken Wings, the rest of the clan had - Fettuccini Pesto with Shrimp, Baked Haddock & Chicken & Cheese Quesadilla. Everything was good, can't complain & the prices are extremely reasonable for a restaurant located slop side. Prices range from $8 for appetizers to $21 for the most expensive entree - steak. What a quaint experience. The Red Slate Restaurant is such a niche dinning experience for date night or family dinning. We were able to enjoy breakfast and dinner, recognizing the chef takes pride in the quality ingredients they use. Beyond the fantastic food, the service was amazing! Visiting Vermont from Central Florida, We look forward dinning at Red Slate again. I am not sure how often they rotate the menu, but the fish and chips (you have to try the tarter sauce), salmon, and all of the steak options were wonderful. Great spot!! read more

This restaurant is in the Upper Pass Lodge at Magic Mountain. Wednesday night is build a burger night with $2.00 draft beers. The beers are considered sampling and the glass is about 8oz. I thought it was a good deal with several beers to sample. My companion and I had already had burgers two days in a row and opted for something else on the menu which caused alarm with our server. She went out of her way to let us know we must be simpletons to not order burgers on burger night. We ignored her borderline rude behavior and ordered fish & chips and a Montreal steak. We should have ordered burgers. The steak was $21.00 and that's pretty close to what I've seen elsewhere for the same cut. It was cooked to perfection as I requested. Very tender with a mushroom & onion sauce. It would have been a home run if not for the heavy handed seasoning. The salt was aggressive. The worst I've ever seen a decent steak ruined. I mentioned it to our server and she said a customer said the same thing the week before. Our server went and told the "chef" who said "there's nothing I can do about it. It's the Montreal seasoning I have. I had the same seasoning in my spice rack and threw it out. It's primary ingredient is sodium. Of course you could always use less . . . Or supplement something less offensive. Your a "chef", figure it out. The sides were mashed potatoes & carrots which were good. My companions fish came out with a red flag of its own. It was strangely long & flat and the batter was very dark. The dark color indicates either dirty oil in the fryolator or too long in the fryolator or a combination of both. I tried it and surprisingly it wasn't bad. The batter wasn't too thick and the fish was light and flaky. It just didn't look appetizing. The chips weren't good. Same dark color as the fish, greasy, chewy not crunchy. I ordered lava cake for dessert. It was clearly microwaved. The cake was tough and chewy. Too positive mentions, we had maple buffalo wings as a starter. They were absolutely delicious. We were fighting over them. And my companion loved her cole slaw. There is potential here. We will try again next time we're in the area. read more

The service was miserably slow; 45 minutes to get my first drink. When it did come (a house specialty Manhattan) it was extremely watered down and more vermouth than bourbon. It's not even busy right now. Going on 80 minutes. Still waiting. The waiter (there's only one) has bused a single table. Hoping the food is amazing. 90 minutes and waiting... we're the only table. The burgers are fresh local meat, bacon and cheese served on a brioche bun, excellent burgers!! While staying at the Upper Pass Lodge for a weekend, we were so glad to have this great restaurant just footsteps away from our room. With a LivingSocial deal, our stay included breakfast to order each morning at the restaurant, plus a cheese slate and wine, and a picnic lunch - everything from the Red Slate menu. Many of the menu items are locally sourced from Vermont, and everything we had was delicious. Breakfast was warm and comforting with your standard eggs, homefries, and bacon and sausage combinations. The bacon and sausage were from local Vermont farms, and so good. The homefries were thinly sliced, perfectly crispy, and maybe my favorite part of the breakfast menu. The pancakes were nice and fluffy, and served with Vermont maple syrup. The Vermont cheese slate was also great, and our picnic lunch included a roasted chicken sandwich with a curry mayo and a roast beef sandwich with horseradish mayo, both on soft multigrain bread, with sides of pasta salad and fruit salad. We decided to have dinner one night at the bar, and between the two of us, my boyfriend and I ordered poutine, spicy maple chicken wings, and a BLT. The poutine isn't made with cheese curds, but the local cheese they use is really good. The wings were crispy, actually spicy, and just sweet enough. They were a little dry, but I couldn't complain because the sauce made up for it. The BLT was made with the local Vermont bacon, so it was quality. Along with the great food, the Red Slate has a nice selection of beers, wines, and spirits - all from Vermont. Every time we stopped in, there was a good mix of people from the hotel, locals, and other area guests. We would definitely stop in again if we're in the area, and Red Slate Restaurant may even be reason enough for us to stay at the Upper Pass Lodge again. read more

we had been by here before and it never looked too interesting, it is inside one or the magic mountain ski lodges.....but we thought we would give it a try, we were early for dinner on a week night between winter and summer seasons so it was not too busy, we ate at the bar, bartender was genial and informative, all the liquor, beer and wine come from vermont....it was burger night and the burger with a small salad was outstanding, wife had the salmon also excellent, drinks were good and conversations interesting....glad we decided to come here!!!!! read more

This is a good find! Any place that serves a Vermont made alcohol only bar is already going to be amazing in my book! The shrimp dish was good, like a cooked fresh kind of good. We were a party of 5 and everyone loved their food. Everything tasted as though it was made on the spot and from scratch. My only complaint was I was there with two children and wasn't offered a kids menu so I assumed they didn't have one, but looking at their website it's seems as though they do. Regardless, for as good as the food is, it's really reasonably priced and they liked their food so much that they ate the adult sized serving anyway. read more

This place has horrible service and very below average food. People who got to the restaurant 20 minutes after us got all of their food first, and our party got our food 15 minutes apart. We had to send our food back because the chicken and cheese quesadilla had one piece of chicken and no cheese. Server was also very rude. We will not be returning to the Red Slate. read more

Never did I think it were possible to have such an amazing meal in what looks like the lobby of a hotel. The chef, whoever it is, is an absolute artist. The cheese plate comes with a house made pumpkin jam... Which is far better than anything similar. The braised short rib falls apart and mixes perfectly with the Cabernet burnaise. We found this place through Restaurant.com. This place was excellent. We went on a Monday evening, and were the only ones there (the place just opened a few months ago). We ordered some local drinks (why not? stay local!), had the salmon and a burger. I have a goal to eat a burger everywhere I go to compare, and this makes it to the top. Excellent seasonings, homemade pickles, smoked chipotle jalopeno puree, and much more. absolutely delicious. The salmon was cooked perfectly, the green beans and quinoa were also cooked perfectly. We stayed at the upper pass lodge in February 2015. We ate breakfast and dinner at the red slate, it was excellent. The first night we arrived late for check in around 9:30pm had a cheeseburger in the bar area cooked medium it was Perfect! Breakfast next morning was pretty standard bacon, sausage, eggs and pancakes with real Vermont maple syrup. That night we had the maple wings maybe the best I ever had and a steak cooked perfect. The following night had the wings and crab cakes, everything was excellent. read more

I am here in Vermont to see the Foliage and decided to dine in the Red Slate tonight. We had made arrangements earlier that day and when we arrived, they refused to put together a few tables to accommodate our party of 10. We split up into two tables, disappointed. Then, a kind couple offered to give up their seats so we could sit closer together. The customers were more reasonable than the waiters. The waiter couldn't answer the questions we had about the dishes. The waiter only inputed our orders 10 minutes after we ordered. The waiter kept dropping utensils and bowls and was incredibly annoying. The balsamic vinegar was too sour and kinda made my mouth quiver. The butter that came with the complimentary bread had a few herbs and spices and was pretty good. Food has arrived... We were given apple sauce instead of the ordered French fries because they were trying to "wind up" even though there was an hour to closing. The steak was cooked as asked and the meatloaf and fish were pretty good. This place can be summed up as a restaurant with terrible, clumsy staff with mediocre food for a completely unreasonable price. A lot of the reviews here seem pretty inaccurate. Items that we saw online didn't exist in the restaurant. Do not recommend. read more

While staying at the Upper Pass Lodge it was great to have this restaurant in the building especially on those days when it was freezing rain outside and you didn't feel safe driving anywhere. We went for dessert in the evenings and the pie slices (oh, the blueberry pie) and ice cream were great with tea before going to bed. The lava cake was really great also! Wish we had dined here but since Magic Mountain was closed we usually were not in the area during the day since we were skiing the surrounding mountains. We ate at this restaurant at 7:45 on a Friday night. We were staying right down the road and were looking for somewhere local to eat after a long day of skiing at Sugarbush. A rather large crowd of other guests from our hotel also were eating there so it was pretty busy. We liked the selection on the menu. We're from New Haven, CT and since we have such good Italian restaurants I usually stay away from pizza or pasta dishes up north. I decided to get the gnocchi with VT Gouda cheese anyway expecting it to be okay & was delicious. My husband's steak was cooked just right and my very picky stepson loved his Mac & cheese and chili as well as homemade chocolate cake for dessert. We also had cheddar bacon soup for appetizer which was very good as well. The staff was very nice and we were pleasantly surprised to find such a good restaurant close to Bromley & Magic mountain and look forward to returning. read more
