Wish there was a 0 star option. If you're hungry or hoping food will come out 30 minutes after you order, go somewhere else. If you value service, go somewhere else. But if you are looking for luke warm food, a horrible manager and owner, this is your place. We waited over an hour to get appetizers, entrees about another half an hour after that and a few of friends didnt get food till 2 hours later. Both manager and owner was unapologetic and was very hostile. Only saving grace was our waiter Lance, but as good as he was, there was nothing he could do to salvage what horrible experience we had. Avoid The Red Fox restaurant at all costs -- even if they offer free meals. Our entire dining experience was miserable. First, there was no heat at the dinning area. We sat in a freezing cold restaurant for over two hours waiting for our food. Yes, two hours -- for a burger and penne vodka. Basic dishes that should not take that long under any circumstances. When we complained about the wait time, the so-called chef/owner, Lucas, was arrogant and rude. Instead of apologizing, he tried to blame us for having expectations about how long food should take. Over two hours for a simple meal is unacceptable, no matter how experienced a chef claims to be, which he clearly has none. Absolutely awful. We waited for 2.5 hours for a burger and some apps and then was yelled at by the so called owner of the restaurant. If that guy is the owner I have no idea how they stay in business. If I could give a 0 I would. Stay away. If they offer you free food it still is not worth it! The "manager" was so rude and vulgar and did not care our children could hear her bad language. We had high hopes as the property is beautiful but the owner Lucas quickly ruined that for us. there is no comparison to the red fox that was swallowed up by this red fox. they are not authentic and real. their service is lacking and their menu is a poor attempt at recreating the original. the foxtails and the bar menu cannot be duplicated and are a real disappointment to loyal patrons that have tried to enjoy the new atmosphere. we really miss the fox irish pub. now we have no place to go that makes us feel welcome and happy "to be home." read more

As a first time visitor to the Stratton Mountain/Windham County area, this is at the top of my list out of a dozen spots for one of my most spots to grab a drink and food. First off, I was welcomed by friendly staff as soon as I walked in by myself and took a seat at the bar. As it was snowing and I was driving alone, I didn't get a chance to enjoy one of their many drinks, but the people at the bar and restaurant sure seem to enjoy them. But I did get a chance to sample their yummy sweet potato fries and red fox chicken tenders. Both were above par for bar finger foods but I ate all of it not because I was hungry but because it was a comforting meal from being out in the snow. The best though was dessert. I was lucky and smart enough to get their infamous apple pie coupled with ice cream. I could've licked the plate and spoon clean which I probably did. It was that good. Even the President and his staff love this apple pie! I got a chance to meet some of the Logans who own the bar/restaurant/inn and I must say they are good people. Danny, Cindy, and their team went beyond their way to say hello and make me feel at home in a town where I was a visitor. I can see why they have so many locals who continue to go there. Also, they have bands who play music there every weekend and I hear the scene includes dancing, good food and drinks. I hope to be in the area again soon to join in on the fun. read more

Wow. Where to start. We have been coming here for years because it is convenient to Stratton and the setting is cool, but this place is an all time rip off. We've known that for a long time, but last night was a final punch in the face. We called for a reservation and they told us they could only seat us at 5pm. Fine, busy night. But we sat for an hour with zero food in an empty restaurant! They gave us three different versions of the menu (only one was accurate), and the food came out almost ice cold. Our waiter was absolutely clueless and was profusely sweating each time he came to the table. With no dessert and one alcoholic beverage for each of the three adults, the bill for 9 (6 kids - three ate from the children's menu which, btw, is a great call) was $700. Honestly, if you are going here and LOVE the scene at the Red Fox, you are a barbarian. It's a terrible restaurant, with awful service, worse food, but a nice fire and arcade video games. I wonder what they put in the water that everyone is so cheery. I've been to Red Fox twice now. Once with a friend in the winter for dinner after skiing at nearby Stratton and again for dinner in the summer with my wife after tackling mountain climbs on The Vermont Challenge bike tour. The apple pie afterward is to die for no matter how stuffed you think you are. Apparently it supposed to be busier in the winter than the summer but it was surely filling up pretty fast after my bike ride. Food is good. Service was great. Everyone was happy. It has been four days since we visited Red Fox Inn and I'm still reeling. Backstory: At the suggestion of my brother in law, my husband, two little girls and I drove over to the restaurant after a day of skiing at Stratton. The rest of our family and friends were planning to follow, but as we'd all skied separately, we weren't sure of the exact number planning to meet us at the Red Fox Inn at the end of the day. So we arrived at 4:00. The doors are locked but people are waiting outside in the snowy parking lot and two or three dogs ran spastic circles around us. When the doors opened up, we entered a lovely looking old inn and instantly felt at home in the rustic downstairs area - there was a fire crackling away in a cast-iron stove, the room is filled with long tables, a stage, and random games like pinball. While we waited for the rest of our group, my husband and I ordered a couple of beers and our daughters played pinball. Things were going well. Then this guy comes over - I believe his name is V Chan - and he asks how many people will be joining us. Mind you, the only people in the enormous room at the time (4:10 pm) were us and a few people sitting at the bar... My husband says, likely four adults and eight kids. V says, "Likely?!" I explained that we weren't sure because some are still at Stratton, but "at least four adults." V looks at me and angrily sneers, "AT LEAST?!" This is our first sign that he might be slightly unbalanced. My husband says, "We're just going to grab a quick bite and get out of your hair." "Yeah, well you haven't run a bar in Stratton for twenty years," spat V as we stalked away. I quietly whisper to my husband, "Maybe we should go somewhere else." (By the way, my husband ran a bar in Sun Valley, ID) "Calm down," V spits from several tables away. What. The. F*&^?????, People? A few moments later V comes over and offers an apology. Okay. So maybe he was having a moment. He says, "I get it, you work hard all week and want to get out...my wife and I are the same way." The rest of our group arrives. Our 10 year old son is with them and thought it a brilliant idea to wear his ski boots and helmet into the restaurant. He's 10. He was with his uncle... we get that the boots were not a great idea. At the same moment we saw our son, so did V Chan. He begins yelling as he bolts across the room toward our little boy, "SKI BOOTS AND HELMET IN HERE? GET HIM OUT!!!" He came at our little kid like he was some drunken 25 year old. "DOES HE BELONG TO YOU? GET HIM OUT!" he demands with a grand sweep of his creepy (possibly prison-tattooed) arm. I want to tell V a lot of very nasty, nasty insults, but everyone tells me to let it go while they scramble to find our son a pair of NOT ski boots. As this is happening, V Chan says from several tables away, "You seriously don't have any other shoes for him?" While staring at me angrily. Is this because I'm a woman? Is he psychotic? Do his employers now how verbally and physically aggressive this guys is? Again, I'm told to let it go. V Chan again offers a sort of apology after several minutes and my husband tells him he was a bit overly aggressive to a little kid. V Chan, informs us again about his 20 years of running a bar in Stratton, VT. I can't help myself and inform him of my career history in the legal department of a major hospitality company. He was not amused. We order chicken wings and artichoke dip and French fries. V Chan hucks some tiny paper plates in front of each of us, Frisbee style. Because that's how hospitality professionals roll at the Red Fox Inn. A few moments later, I see him speaking with the owner while angrily staring at our table and pointing. I wonder... was this guy institutionalized for a large portion of his life? Is he still? Do they allow him out on weekend work passes in hopes of integrating him with society? read more

This is a hard review.... We ate at the restaurant above the pub, we really enjoyed the ambiance - old wooden structure, cute Christmas lights and overall really nice/ quiet romantic. The pub below, not so nice I wouldn't recommend, although they had a few things on the menu we may have liked. The bread we had before dinner was one of our fav's, don't know what they did but it still stands out in my mind. The dinner was strange my sister has some sort of vegetable pot-pie and it was amazing, we all tried a bite and were just floored by how good it was. My mother had the steak and it was great. However my dad had salmon and risotto and it was very bland, the risotto was terrible. I had the penne -vodka and it was also terrible, watery sauce and flavorless. Then there was homemade apple pie for dessert with ice cream and the entire family loved it! All in all guess you just have to know which dishes to order. It was really nice to get away from the Stratton resort places though, and this place wasn't as expensive as Verde or MB steakhouse which are the only other two nicer restaurants in the area. read more

We went here on a slow Tuesday night, sat at a high top near the bar, and had some wings and onion rings. The wings were spicy and well-cooked, the rings salty and crunchy. As bar food goes, I thought this place was pretty fantastic. The servers were friendly, the beer was cold, and the check wasn't expensive. We called the Red Fox Inn to ask whether we could bring our 2 dogs with us for outside dining. The person that answered the phone informed us that the inside dining was closed because of Covid but we would be allowed to dine outside with our dogs. When we got to the restaurant a dog that was not on leash went up to sniff our dogs. The dogs started growling and barking and after we were able to get the dogs separated the proprietor informed us that dogs were not allowed. We explained that we had called before driving 45 minutes and were informed dogs were allowed. When I pointed also out that it was THEIR dog that was off leash, not mine, and THEIR dog that had become aggressive, the proprietor, a squinty mean lady with crazy eyes said to me "You've been here before. Your that problem customer". I explained to her that I've never been to the restauraunt before and I had absolutely no idea what she was talking about. We left the restaurant and I just now started reading other reviews here on TripAdvisor and it seems suggested from other reviews that this proprietor tells customers as a matter of regular course of business "that she knows them and they are that problem customer". Very strange experience to say the least. Clearly the proprietor is not well. I kinda feel bad for her but at the same time her business is in the service industry and in 2020 you simply cannot treat your customers this bad without taking the risk of garnering a negative review ... which is what this is. Heard so much about this famous Stratton Mountain area restaurant that I was looking forward to going there. Let's just start off that you enter into a loud, crowded bar area that was hopping with happy people. Then you are led upstairs to this beautiful barn, spectacular fireplace dining area to be seated. So far so good right. We get handed the menus which now has a combo bar and dining room menu plus a specials menu, and the wine menu. That's when I lost it, the wine special of the day was $75. The average price of every other bottle was over $35 per bottle, most were over $60. Talk about a ripoff, I wasn't in Peter Lugars, or Ruth Chris, or sitting in a restaurant in Manhattan, WTF? We were waiting for 2 more ppl to make us a table of 8, but when the 6 of us wanted to order appetizers, they told us the chef prefers to fill the whole table once so they don't have to go up and down the stairs too much! And the Waitress said this with a straight face. Then after she opened and poured us our $75 bottle of Syrah, I was hoping for a complimentary bread basket, but no they don't do that there, you have to ask for a bread basket which was then added to the bill. Now I have to decide my main course and choose between a bar menu Philly cheese sandwich to the ribeye special dusted in porcini dust for $35. Who is in charge here? I had that ribeye special which was a tough grizzle loaded piece of meat that was the lowest grade from the worst supermarket in town. I had to ask for more au ju gravy, the meat was under seasoned and just not good. $35 also does not get you a complimentary salad, and the chef choose to give me 2 spoonfuls of mashed potato, plus the same of squash and 1 stalk of broccoli. At the table next to us they all had bar food, wings, sandwiches, etc, I just don't get the point of having bar food with supposed fine dining food in the same place. Makes no sense to me. You need to lack a certain degree of self-respect to be a patron here. We've had the bad luck of getting the same waitress when coming to this tavern and both times we were left unsettled by both her poor attitude and total ineptitude. The food, for the most part, is comforting. Specifically the artichoke dip and vegetarian burger are great options for a filling meal. We stopped into Red Fox Inn twice over the course of our weekend in Vermont. It was close to our hotel, and they had a decent beer selection. In fact, what initially drew us to this place was the fact that they had Backacre Sour Golden Ale, which is new, made in Vermont, hard to find elsewhere, and my boyfriend's new favorite beer after having tried it at Red Fox Inn. The price for a 1 pt., 9.4 fl. oz. bottle was a hefty $27, but we shared it at the bar, and we figured it was the equivalent of multiple drinks. The next day, we went back for more beers and dinner at the pub. Prices seemed pretty standard, but the food was really mediocre. Chicken tenders were around $8, I think, and we only got 3 small tenders for that price. Also, my $12 mac 'n cheese was pretty weak - lukewarm, kind of watery base, and what seemed to only be a mild white cheddar in it. My boyfriend's burger was pretty solid though, and it came on a Portuguese muffin, which was a nice touch. The pub was pretty hopping both nights we were there, but service kept a good pace and was really friendly enough. It was a little cold inside for me, but I probably should have worn more layers. I have to note that the ladies' restroom was very welcoming, with a female empowering quote framed on the wall and complimentary sanitary items, pins, and Tums. Went here for the first time with a group of friends who go all the time. Awesome vibe very relaxed and chill low key bar, but also a cute place to eat. Def not fancy so perfect for after a day on the mountain. Between us we got wings, chicken fingers, salmon, meatloaf, veggie burger, and the chicken sandwich.
