The HOW Foundation is at the top of my list for this kind of work. They've worked for me twice at my home and twice at the non-profit I operate. Excellent price (like half what the competition charges). Last week, they came out on short notice and took care of mulching four trees that were taking up space in our parking lot before a big event on Sunday. They even left us a truck full of mulch that we'll use for our landscape. Someone else's review mentioned breakage. Yes. On one of the four jobs they've done for me, one flower pot got broken. They told me about it immediately (high level of responsibility). Their low prices versus the competition definitely pays for that flower pot many times over. Footnote: I've only ever used them for full tree removal not for trimming. If I were going to hire them for trimming I would either make sure they can send a licensed arborist or I would be out there to direct them. read more

In October a very old and very dead hackberry tree in my backyard started to fall (large branches falling, only a matter of time before the rest of it fell). I called around and got 3 quotes for cutting down the tree and hauling away all the branches & trunk. The HOW Foundation had the best price and were the most flexible with scheduling. They were prompt on calling me to schedule, following up and had great customer service. Be aware: they only take cash or check and you have to put 1/2 the total down before they do any work. On the plus side: you get a tax deduction for the remaining cost of service. I'm going to call them again to do work on a large oak tree. I had them out bid on removing my two Large Oaks that did not make it through the Feb. 21 freeze including stump removal and trim 2 other trees in my backyard. Please save your money! This is a rip off. I used them a few times and then they took a check from me to cut a tree in my front yard and never came back. They did some work for me about about a month ago: cutting down and removing a dead pear tree and trimming a magnolia tree that was brushing against the house. Pros: The price is great, the organization does good work (assisting recovering addicts), and they did a fast job of taking down the dead tree. In addition to cutting down the tree, they moved the wood to the curb, and had it removed a couple days later. Cons: The workers were 3 hours late, didn't seem bothered about being late, and did a perfunctory job of trimming the magnolia tree. Overall, a great deal for the price. read more

They came and took our brush pile and cut down 3 trees that apparently were hit with the ice storm. Did a number on our trees and we lost our electricity because of the down limbs. I used H.O.W. to trim the trees in my yard last month (March 2012), and had a great experience. They sent out an arborist to survey the yard and give me an estimate. We talked a bit and he appeared to be very knowledgeable, and knew just what we needed done. I got a written estimate on the spot (*very* reasonable) and they called later that day to set up a day to do the job. On the day itself the crew arrived on-time, they were fast and did a great job. The crew did not have a trailer that day (these things happen), so they left the trimmings stacked neatly in the yard, promising to come back the next day and get them. True to their word, they came back the next morning and hauled off every stick. The owner called later that day to check on the work and make sure I was happy, which I most certainly was! Great communication with H.O.W. throughout the process. The only thing to be aware of up front is that they (like many yard work companies) do not take credit or debit cards, only cash or checks. I can't recommend H.O.W. highly enough. They're our go-to tree folks from now on. read more

I am so impressed with The How Foundation!! I called them a few weeks ago to remove a big tree that had fallen through my deck. The tree was growing from a slope inside the deck. They cut the tree up for firewood, stacked the wood and removed the brush. After they had gone I noticed that part of the tree trunk was still lodged loosely in the cliff between some rocks. My fear was that after the deck was repaired and the latticework replaced, that big piece of tree would fall through the deck again. I called the HOW office and they sent their crew back to remove the remaining trunk. The crew and office staff were so respectful, returning my calls promptly and patiently. 1. Show up/on time!! (Should it take an entire day or waiting around for them to show up?) 2. Need to work on customer service (phone skills). 3. Tax Deductible...not really! (or, in my case). MY RANT: 9 minutes before my meeting, they call and said they were still in Georgetown, TX, and they still have to drive to Austin/183 & MoPac area! They were going to give me estimates on 3 properties. I told them, when I made the appointment, to PLEASE CALL/text if they were running late as I moved my lunch hour to meet them. Not a problem, they said. Keep in mind, when you meet them, they come in a team of two people: Person #1: The Arborist Person #2: The Estimator I asked the man on the phone, why didn't you me call earlier? I was told that the person doing the previous quote didn't want to be rude to that client, as it was a large quote...I don't buy it!! One of them could have excused themselves and said, I need to call the office for a moment, while the other person continued with the estimate. I'm sure the client would have understood. Man on the Phone: === Very rude and didn't even apologize that they were running late. He only wanted to transfer me to "Frank", so "Frank" could reschedule my appointment. I know things can run late: === BUT, that is why I asked for the courtesy in letting me know. 9 minutes before we are to meet is inexcusable. Yes, they put me on the schedule, but what good is that if it takes an entire day of waiting for them to show up in order to get a quote? Tax Deductible? === That's B.S.(in my case). My accountant said I couldn't write off half of the costs from them, like the How Foundation tells you, you can. I would first ask your accountant before you fall for that line. Thanks for reading. We have used these guys a few times over the years, most recently removing a full 40 foot + Ash tree from the back that was huge and dying. They had great pricing and showed up on time. I always got a heads up when they were on their way, and they communicated to me when the stump grinding team was delayed due to weather (they rescheduled within the week, not a big deal for us). I am nothing but happy with their services. They moved my patio table and grill prior to work, then moved it right back to where it was, their clean up was very thorough. read more

They were great. I was able to get a quote quickly for a price I felt was fair, and they managed to work me in to get the work done within a few weeks. The work was done quickly and well, the guys were super nice, and they even cut up the larger pieces and stacked it for me for my fireplace. The chipper/shredder guys came by a few hours later and cleaned up the rest of the branches that had been left neatly piled in front of my house. I will use them again in a heartbeat. read more

I am quite frustrated. I felt very pressured to go with them and to sign right away. I didn't know they needed a deposit for 1/2 of the work prior to making an appointment for me so I was surprised. I paid my $500.00 deposit because I have a huge tree to be removed in a hurry. They were overly eager to call me to make the quote appointment and very eager to take my calls prior to signing. They even waited for me for nearly an hour to show up for my quote when they had already spoken with my husband about the rate. Again, felt very pressured. After signing, I tried calling back - ALL 4 numbers listed for them, even the arborist's cell phone number. Not an answer, not a voice mail. Tried emailing and it bounced. TERRIBLE! The HOW Foundation removed a lot of brush for us in 2012 and again today. Both times they did a great job. I needed some brush cleared on the slope below our house to create a firebreak. It was a complicated location with difficult access. The HOW folks cut and cleaned up a ton of brush and small trees and hauled it up the slope, then stacked it on their trailer and hauled it away. They also trimmed an oak tree that had grown up and blocked our view. I was here during the work and was able to point out specific things I wanted cleared. The 1st time we used them the guy was great trimming the tree worked hard. The guys picking up the branches were so-so. Only problem we had was getting them to come back and pick up all the brush they told use several times there were on their way but never showed. we had to hire the city to come get it. The 2nd time we used them not nearly as good, we didn't notice until after the left that a branch must have hit the house as it put a gouge on the outside wall. read more

Thieves!!!!!!!!!!! We have our own Hvac Company and have been sending them buisness for over 8 years now and it will stop now over $50 dollars. We payed a depo for bush trimming and called back within 15 minutes to cancel that day and have not got our refund back yet and that was 4/30/14 all they do is tell us a lie one after another day after day on the phone. I called to have have an estimate on some tree trimming and 2 very pleasant and polite guys cam out later the same day. I explained that I wanted some broken and dead branches trimmed from one tree, the roof cleared and a low hanging branch trimmed from another tree. They gave me a bid lower than any other I had received and considering that 1/2 is tax deductible, I made an appointment with them to come out 5 days later.They said it would not be necessary for me to be present when they came. HOW called me a day early to see if it was OK to come that day. It was and I happened to be home when they came. Three guys rang my door and asked me if they could see the contract so that they would know what had to be done. I was surprised that they did not already know and wondered what they would have done if I had been at work.I showed them the contract and showed them the trees, etc. They told me they would need to collect the balance due before they left. Also news to me. They finished quickly and I went out to look at the work. There were some dead branches left hanging and some stuff that needed to be cut away from the roof. They did it but I was not thrilled with the work, It did not appear that these are workers who care a lot about what they do. They did the letter of the contract, I suppose, but nothing beyond. There are still dead parts branch tips, etc. I had to call them to come back to get a chainsaw they left in the yard. If you use them, make sure that everything is spelled out in the contract and be sure you are there to inspect the work before they leave. read more

I never received a response when I called to ask them to come back and finish the job I had already paid for. Complained to the BBB and they didn't get a response from them either. It think it's the luck of the draw if you get good service from the guys on the job. But the ones who are running the business are not good business people. read more

I had several quotes to remove 5 trees from my property, and no came close to the price that HOW quoted. I had several people quote me $1,000 plus for the job, which I thought was way too high. HOW came in and quoted me $450. No brainer. They showed up on time, and took care of business. Very professional, and I could not have been more pleased with their work. We used the HOW Foundation to tree a live oak about 3-4 years ago. They did a good job & cleaned up after themselves, the tree looked great & was free of ball moss for a time. They also did some work on our neighbors' live oaks (which is how we called them), which looked really fantastic. Yes, 1/2 the price is tax deductible, and the foundation does really good work, helping recovering addicts get back on their feet & learn a marketable skill. I feel it is super important to support that. The one thing I did not like, which kept me from giving them 5 stars, is that in coming out to give a quote, you were agreeing to hire them. They would not, at the time (& this may be different now) come give a quote w/o it being a commitment to hire them. I didn't like this, especially as I thought the price was a touch high. 2/12/2014 Tree removal & stump grinding. Scheduled for early afternoon. I needed a tree removed from my back yard. The foundation had left a flyer on my front door a few days earlier. I contacted them, set an appointment for following week. They called ahead, the workers showed up on time and started in right away. Chuck, climbed up into the tree, strapped himself in and worked as deftly as a circus acrobat. It was an amazing sight to watch. The workers removed all branches, logs and residue and hauled it away the same day. A second crew was to stop by in a few days to take care of the stump. Exactly one week later after several days of freezing, inclement weather i received a call about 8:45am saying they would be here within the hour. They arrived on time and rolled in the grinding machine, took care of the stump. Pros: The price was great, the workers were friendly, efficient and cleaned up after their work. In addition, the main office stayed in constant contact as needed. They were very customer friendly. Cons: None. Great job!!
