I can't recommend these guys enough! With the Austin housing being what it is, finding someone that does quality work for a fair price is a near impossibility - but Sid Mourning Tree Service is a notable exception. We had them trim our Live Oaks several years ago and just had them come back for another trimming as well as a tree removal this past January. I got other quotes as well, which they beat by 30-35% Both the arborist who came out for the initial quote and the crew that did the trimming were friendly, prompt and helpful. The trees look great after the trimming and I was very impressed with how skillfully and carefully they removed the tree. Rather than the crew arrive with a large truck and towable wood chipper like other tree service companies I've seen in our area, they have someone drop off a trailer for brush in the morning and the 4 man crew comes in a regular pickup. At the end of the day, someone comes by to haul away the trailer with all of the trimmings. This way they don't have a $100k+ truck and chipper tied up on every job, which I imagine plays a big part in their prices being so competitive. After several different bids from other companies we were relieved to meet Orion and get a MUCH better deal than the others. They were very responsive, came out on time and did everything g they were supposed to do. Orion suggested a native tree to replace my sad, sick one and I'm taking his advice. We had used Sid Mourning Tree Service (and the earlier version, Good Morning Tree Service) 2 or 3 times in the past with good results. So, a few weeks ago, when we needed a 40-year old Arizona Ash with a rotten interior cut down, we called them. Sid himself came out to give me an estimate. And that's where everything got kind of strange. I showed Sid the tree. He said he could not give an estimate because the cost would depend on how long it took to remove the tree. So, how long? I asked. Sid said he could not tell me for sure -- maybe three days. And they would charge something like $1300 a day. I was flabbergasted. Three days to cut down a tree? I told Sid I seriously doubted it would take that long since we had had trees cut down and hauled off in a few hours previously. And I wanted a more solid estimate of the cost. He said he could not do that. I asked Sid about getting a city permit to remove the tree, since it was large enough to require one. Sid told me that, yes, I would have to get a permit and it would cost us $150. And I would have to get it or the city could fine us $20,000. He said that was something we would need to do on our own before they could remove the tree. I asked him about having someone remove the stump as well. Sid said there was only one person in the whole city of Austin who could do that correctly -- without saying who that was. Otherwise, he said, attempting to remove the stump could ruin plumbing and electrical connections nearby, even "destroy our house". By this time, I was wondering what the heck was going on and I was ready to end the interview. So, I told Sid thanks for coming but I could not go further with just an open-ended estimate. At that point, he relented and said, OK, he would give me a more solid figure. He wrote $1950 on the back of a business card and gave it to me. I told him I would have to get another estimate. Sid disparaged other tree services in comparison to his company and backed this by saying he had "60,000 customers". (Do the math on that!) We ended up having the tree removed by Happy Tree Service of Austin. Evan from Happy Tree came out and estimated (and later charged) $1350 + tax. He informed me that the city did not charge for residential permits, that it should be no problem and that they would take care of it for us. I did not end up having the stump removed but did ask him about it. He did not see how it could affect electrical or plumbing and we shared a laugh over stump removal destroying the house. It took them about a week for them to get the permit and then after another week or so, they came out and removed the tree. It took 3 hours. Bottom line, I do not know what went on that day with Sid and his estimate. That whole episode just seems really bizarre. And it does not jibe at all with my previous experiences with the company, which had been good. But when Sid, as he was leaving, told me that he had "60,000 customers", I wish I had thought to reply that now he just had 59,999. read more

They provided excellent service a few years ago on extensive trimming of trees on my property. However, after the ice storm, they haven't had anyone returning calls. We used Sid 2 times. Once for general clean up and trimming of trees that had gone uncared for, and again to take down a tallow the died after the frost. The arborist that came out both times was helpful, in no rush, and answered all of my questions. The crews were lovely and left our yard spotless! I would give zero stars if that was an option. Here's a quick rundown of how O'brian and Tracy at Sid's screwed us. O'brian (the terrible 'salesman' (who needs a salesman for tree trimming anyway) Doubt he has GED from High School)) comes to my house to give me a bid on trimming all the palms (11) and pecan trees (3). He shows up 1.5 hours late and I specifically told Tracy (overpaid secretary) that I would be unable to walk the property with O'brian if he was late. I tell him I'm on a conf call and cant walk the property. I tell him all the palms and pecans need to be cleaned up. He says he's got it and not to worry. I call him later that day to confirm he understood what needed to be done. He confirmed he got it all and gave me a price of $1350 plus tax which was $50 less than the next lowest bid. I told him I had already hired someone to come out that coming weekend but I would use him instead. Tracy calls me to schedule the appointment. All good. Then I get an email (see attachment below) from Tracy with the bid that she typed up as an 'estimate' which I replied to stating this was agreed to being a hard bid and she said yes it is but they put 'estimate' in case there are 'snakes, neighbors' which makes no sense at all and looking back on it I should have known she was lying. Fast forward to the day of service (today) and Obrian and his crew show up and said this was a 2 day job and the bid would be $2700 to do the work now. Obrian somehow thought only 2 of the 11 palms needed to be cleaned up when they are all in exactly the same condition. Classic bait and switch subcontractor nonsense. The only snakes one needs to be aware of is the snake oil these scammers are trying to sell. Please see email string attachment between Tracy and I when I was concerned about the 'estimate' vs hard bid. I hope an untrimmed tree falls on their truck. I used Sid Mourning Tree Service twice when my wife and I purchased our home. I was really impressed with the overall service. The office staff was accommodating in our request for their insurance to write out a policy specifically to our home. We had them file a permit with the city and subsequently remove a tree. The crew that came out the first time didn't leave hardly any brush or twigs behind. They sweep, blow, and cleanup pretty much everything making you wondering whether any work was actually done. On the second visit, we had a tree removed that took four guys the majority of two days to remove. I happened to log into our security cam the moment they let a 10' trunk fall to the side. In the process it knocked apart some minor stone work around the back side of our patio. I didn't have to say a word: the team got some mortar, sand, and put it all back together seamlessly. Requested a quote for some trimming in backyard and removal of a part of a dead tree in the front. Guy came by at some point that week and agreed part of tree needed to be removed and quoted me for half a day. The day they are suppose to start comes around and crew shows up. Crew leader recognizes within minutes that the entire tree needs to go and says it will take a full day. I have to call the office and the receptionist tries to convince me to move forward with the full day (at $1300) even after I mentioned the need for a permit to remove a tree. Only then does she ask how large the tree is and agrees that a permit is needed. They agree to take care of permit and to contact us back once the receive it back from the city so we can schedule a new date. It's has now been more than two months and I haven't heard from them since lol... Also worth mentioning. Do you appreciate live oak trees more when unsightly ball moss has been removed? Other companies have done a poor job of trying to extract clusters of ball moss from our three giant live oak trees. Those firms even tried spraying the ball moss each February to try to dry the ball moss so it would supposedly fall to the ground. That hasn't worked so well. I want to let you know if you are serious about getting rid of most all of the ball moss, the Sid Mourning Tree Service is the right company for you. Their tree trimmers work hard to reach the upper and outer extremities of giant live oaks, and they vigorously remove almost all ball moss. I've used this tree service company for 15 years. When the owner arrived and bid the job, it sounded surprisingly high , but times change. I had to leave town. The secretary phoned, said it was a completed job and asked to be paid. I was a bit uneasy because I was in New Mexico, but I have a long history with them. I've read harsh reviews in the past, but I had never had problems personally. So, I paid the $2200.00 sight unseen. I arrived home to discover only 40% of the job was done! Another person came out from the company and agreed with me it wasn't done and explained the owners work order was essentially blank, and the crew had almost nothing to go on, other than his vague memory of what I wanted. Later, the same secretary called and demanded $800 more to finish the job in my small back yard! Wow.......guess I deserved this total rip off. Why?? Well, A. For being out of town and trusting them B. For ignoring many super bad devastating reviews throughout the years that prompted them to change their name. I'm done now. I can probably say that the price was fair for a 40-year-old ash tree with a split in it. They came out the next day after they quoted me and took it down. I thought they were amazing and for the price and peace of mind it was well worth it. I see some one and two stars here but that's probably not the norm for them. This was an emergency takedown and no permit was needed as it was critical to remove it. They did a awesome job! The owner himself came out when we had a tree we feared was dying. He assured us that it was not and recommended an intense feeding. We agreed on a price and waited for the service. After he came back to review the work done, he left me feeling like a jerk that I would even question anything his crew did. We hired this firm to inspect our trees for possible oak wilt (which is a fatal disease for trees). The firm was friendly, but I'm very disappointed in the quality of the inspection. The arborist didn't provide any solid ideas on what could be wrong with our trees, and he offered no solutions for how to solve certain problems. When I made the appt, the receptionist told me their firm could collect samples for lab testing, but when the arborist came to our appt, he said the firm doesn't do that. We had them come out and trim our oak trees. At first I was worried because I was trying to watch three guys work on three different trees at the same time. I wanted to make sure we were on the same page as to what needed to be cut. After 10 minutes into the trimming, I realized I didn't need to worry. Their expertise on which limbs to trim/cut were spot on. To our relief, they were using safety equipment while in the trees and on the roof, especially since it was wet and slippery. To say that our trees are important to us is an extreme understatement. We just moved into a house from the 1970s and it has two gorgeous Southern live oaks that appear to be about 150-250 years old. Very little work was needed on the older one, but the younger one had been neglected for years and had several dead limbs invested with moss balls. During the evaluation, I received a lot of great advice from Orion about small things to do that will help all the trees on our property. When the crew actually showed up, they got to work immediately and completely transformed the younger oak within 4 hours. Not only is it even more beautiful now, I have no doubt the tree is happier and healthier to concentrate on new growth this coming spring. I have two large live oaks that required pruning and one of the branches was actually touching the roof, so it had to be done right. I received bids from three different companies, and Sid's bid was by far the most competitive. I requested an estimate late Tuesday night, they called me Wednesday to confirm a time that worked for us the next day on Thursday, and Sid showed up 5 minutes before our appointment and politely waited in the car while I wrapped up with another bidder. Sid came out and walked around the property for 10 minutes pointing out what needed to be done and emphasizing that it would get done right. Sid is a certified arborist and identified other trees on my property, which helped me later to make decisions about what do with those. Bottom line: Sid doesn't waste time. He knows what needs to be done and answered whatever questions I had, but for the most part he's done this long enough to know what needs to be done and the price to make it happen. I spent that Thursday afternoon comparing the three bids, called Sid to confirm, and they were out the following morning and took care of it in the time that they said that they would. There did seem to be a little miscommunication as I had asked Sid to also take down a Hackberry that was growing in my neighbors yard that was growing over (I confirmed with my neighbor of course that it was okay to take it down), but I had to tell the workers to take it down as they didn't seem to be aware of it. Nevertheless, Sid Mourning Tree Service is a well run company that is competitively priced and worked hard for my business. What more could you ask for?
