We hired Austin Tree Experts to trim the trees on our property to remove dead branches, cut trees back away from the house, and help prevent breakage in future ice storms. They did a good job with the tree trimming and I liked that Keith came out to discuss the work with and also meet about the planting of several crape myrtles we wanted planted. I was very pleased with the professionalism of Keith and Tara with the whole process, from scheduling, to payment, to discussing where the best spots would be for our new trees, to discussing the varieties we thought we wanted and what would be the best fit for our yard. Excellent service. The arborist who came was very knowledgeable and he saved us from removing one of our favorite trees, a shin oak.

Once again a wonderful job. We have used them for years. Every couple of years we have them come by for some light pruning and every 5 years for extensive work as we have a lot of Live Oak trees. This year was a big job and they had to work in the rain and cold. They came back at no charge and reinspected when it was dry and they could see better when things were dry. They did some more trimming and applying sealant at every point where there was something cut, and even reapplied it where they had originally cut in the rain to make sure it had a good coating. There was no extra charge. The quality of work is one thing, but showing up on time, every time, sending me a copy of their insurance renewal each year and the proper wearing of safety gear and life lines makes us happy campers. There have been some changes in the staff from earlier times but I am more than pleased with the different staff. They cost a bit more than the cheapest you can find, but I love the peace of mind of knowing they are watching out for their employees safety and ourselves with having insurance. Upon our initial consultation, I was under the impression that Austin Tree Experts were going to give my crepe myrtles the murder they truly needed, however, the whole process ended up being more like a hit and run. Scheduling was its own issue - they ended up showing up unannounced, without ever making their presence known to us. No knock on the door to see if we were satisfied or had any further questions. Had they inquired, I would have let them know that I wasn't satisfied at all. Our crepe myrtle still looks very sloppy. I emailed my concerns before sending off my payment and I was given a surprise call back a few days later. The call was so unprofessional and brash and will deter me from ever using their services again. The person I spoke with completely ignored my concerns and even told me that he was outside my house that very moment and wanted an impromptu face-to-face confrontation. It made me feel so creeped out and unsafe in my own home. Overall, I think this company wants to provide minimal effort for a quick buck. A piece of climbing equipment and a broken pruning pole were left in plain view for me to dispose of. Two heavy limestone blocks were moved 50 feet and not put back in place. I'll have to hire someone to do it. Insufficient pruning. Job specs called for removing deadwood 2" in diameter or greater. Visually prominent tree still has plenty of such deadwood. A drawback when I put the house on the market in a few months, unless I hire another tree service to do it right. No one checked in with me at the end of the job, or I would have complained then. We've used Austin Tree Experts for at least 10 years now. They've taken great care of several large, old oaks on our property. We have them do scheduled spring and fall tree treatments. When we have specific needs, like pruning low branches or broken limbs, they are very prompt with evaluation, quoting and service. They're also happy to provide guidance on ornamental trees, even though they are not caring for those trees. It's been so long since I've looked at other services that I can't say with certainty how they compare in price to other services. When we originally hired them, they were comparable to respected tree companies. I would never trust our trees to the tree services that put flyers on our door and have no qualified arborist on staff. We have a weeping willow that seemed to be very sick looking this season. After chatting with them they were willing to come by and help figure out what to do. After coming onsite the arborist said "Honestly it just looks like it needs more nutrients and water it doesn't need much more". Talk about integrity! Can't recommend enough! We recently bought a new house that had tons of trees along the foundation and overgrown bushes that were blocking so much sun that we couldn't grow our vegetable garden. Keith showed us which trees along the house were at high risk to damage the foundation, pointed out the hackberries that could go, and found three smaller oaks and a red bud that we didn't even know existed b/c they were so buried under some ligustrums. The bid was very reasonable. The team he sent showed up right on time, worked like crazy all day long, managed to avoid a ton of electrical/cable/internet wires, and left everything clean. We're thrilled with the end result. We also worked with him to help us negotiate an issue between the city and our heritage oaks. He personally knew all the city people involved and was able to help us find a solution that worked for both sides. Here's the deal. We have three pears trees that were extremely neglected by the property's previous owner. God knows when they were last pruned by someone who knew what s/he was doing. In fact, it looks like someone actually tried to kill them as some point. Basically, they needed to be pruned/restored to maximize their fruit-bearing potential. Initially thinking that I might tackle the job myself, I bought a book on pruning and restoring fruit trees, then realized how complicated it could be and decided to hire a professional. Based on the reviews my partner and I read here, and especially because they advertise the services of a certified arborist, we decided to give Austin Tree Experts a go. The arborist, Keith, came to the house and gave my partner an estimate for the job, and represented to her that he would be back to personally do (or at least oversee) the work. The crew that showed up, however, consisted of three young men, only one of whom appeared to speak English, and no arborist. The crew was efficient, courteous and cleaned up, so I have no particular complaint with them, but I feel like there was some misrepresentation. Where the heck was Keith, the arborist? It was his services and expertise we were paying for, after all. To give the benefit of the doubt, I am giving them three stars in case there was a miscommunication about the nature of the work we wanted done. But the experience left a bad taste in my mouth, and I think we'll look elsewhere next time we need similar services. read more

We have lived in our location with 40-60 beautiful oaks, elms and bountiful trees since 1995. Several years ago in the midst of the drought we lost 7-8 live oaks, many over 100 years old. In desperation, after meeting with three arborist's including ATE we hired Austin Tree Experts to treat our remaining trees on a quarterly basis and received their commitment to steward our valuable trees. We since lost more. Imagine my surprise when a neighbor sent the neighborhood a 911 in June 2016 that we had *oak wilt **. Most stunning was that she had hired several arborist's (INCLUDING MINE OF THREE YEARS) who confirmed that there was indeed oak wilt and that my home was an example. Good Lord. Austin Tree Expert are not trained in oak wilt or larger issues?? We are beyond heartbroken that they have taken our $$ but could not have cared less about our dead trees nor the spread of disease. Their frontline, day to day staff are NOT trained to identify oak wilt. You can't make this incompetence up. Save your money. read more

I tried contacting this company today regarding a tree that fell on my roof overnight due to Tropical Storm Hermine. I was asked if I was an existing customer, after replying no I was told that they were booking appointments into October. This is an emergency situation and I didn't think that waiting until October was reasonable. Most companies will accommodate this type of situation. I was disappointed as I've been looking for someone to care for the trees on my very wooded property and this company had a lot of good reviews. Would never recommend this company. I was supposed to have a tree & stump removed, it was delayed over a month with little communication from the company. I'd wait around for them to show up, only to call them at the end of the day and them tell me it was rescheduled without notice for ~2 weeks from that day. Then they removed the tree and did not remove the stump (With no explanation on the day). The stump was removed a week or so later and they broke our storm door window with rocks/debris they were throwing at our house which was ~15 feet away. Clearly no concern for my personal property at all. They finally replaced the glass on my door three weeks later and I asked for a discount and they gave me the stump grinding free "as a courtesy". So they did me the courtesy of being late/not showing up to appointments, not doing the work they said they would, then breaking my window and taking 3 weeks to replace it, not to mention they asked me to clean up the broken glass, which took more than an hour to do. They also destroyed some of my other personal property (which I told them) which was not taken into account in the "courtesy" of not charging me for the stump grinding. Stay away! read more

We had 2 old overgrown and neglected oak trees in our front yard. One was scraping our cars and anyone who attempted to walk in front of our house on the sidewalk. We hired Austin Tree Experts to diagnose a sick tree. At first, the arborist (Bob) was very nice and professional. He collected a tree sample and sent it off and said we'd come up with a treatment plan once the results came in. Then I never heard from him again. The lab sent him the results only a couple weeks after they got them, but he never called me with the results. I had to call the lab and get the report myself. Not to mention he never called me back to come up with a treatment plan. So I've had to hire another company to treat the tree, yet I still got stuck paying $300+ for a service from Austin Tree Experts. I would not recommend this company. read more

Terrible service! We were on a program for them to come every quarter and fertilize our trees and check for any issues like fungus. They came once and sprayed our neighbors trees because they were at the wrong address. They finally did treat our trees that time. They say they were here this spring but their technician did not let us know he was here, if indeed he was. This fall, again we had contact them to get them to come out as we do have issues. They told us on three occasions that they would be here on a certain date but they never showed. Don't do business with these people. read more

I've used Austin Tree Experts several times over the past 10 years for trimming, tree planting and treatment of sick trees. They know their stuff and each time they were able to diagnose, recommend and give an estimate on a timely basis. The bill has always matched the estimate given. What distinguishes their service from other similar services: 1. They are certified arborists and specifically they know what trees do well in Central Texas. They also know about specific problems that seem to plague trees in our area. Our trees have always benefited from their advice. 2. They cleanup afterward. I've seen a lot of services that left leaves and other debris on the yard. When the ATE crew was done with the job, the yard was actually cleaner than before they started- as they cleaned up limbs that had been knocked down by a storm in addition to what was removed by the trimming process.. I have worked with contracting and construction companies quite a bit over the years, so I have a pretty reasonable expectation about what to expect.. With any contractor you hire, unless you are the first appointment of the day, it is not unusual for the crew to run late. If you are the afternoon appointment, the crew will be coming from another job- so it's not unusual for them to be running 1-2 hours late. Because the guys doing the trimming often don't speak english, sometimes communication will be a challenge. While the arborists have always been on time and have communicated well, the crew has sometimes run late. However- I have to keep in mind that they are coming from another job and because they do cleanup after trimming, they do sometimes run late- it's better to have a crew who is late because they take the time to do things right and do a thorough cleanup on their jobs. They are a small company, so if you want to have services like tree planting that are seasonal, you should plan ahead and schedule ahead. If you have storm damage, you can expect that all of your neighbors have storm damage, too. Sometimes during the busy time of year, the lead time is 2-3 weeks for an arborist consult. That will be true of all tree services- so, where possible, plan and schedule services like tree planting well in advance. read more

Can't tell you how much I appreciate this company. I again used their services this year to trim my large pecan tree above my house. While they were trimming the tree I heard a loud crash, and saw a limb had fallen on my deck, breaking a light post and knocking down my string lights. I'm sure it was an accident, but was a little unhappy. Before I could even submit a complaint, I received a phone call from the main office apologizing for the damage and that they would have someone out to take care of the repairs. I was leaving for Europe the following day, and when I returned I found a brand new lamp post installed (they even stained it with matching stain) and they even replaced broken bulbs on my string lights. Accidents happen, and they went above and beyond to make things right, even before I launched a complaint. They will have my business for years to come and I highly recommend them! read more

We have two live oaks that need thinning and pruning every two years. And it is that time, sigh! I requested a bid for doing some work trimming some roots that are lifting up sidewalk paves. We did pass on it for the moment, but the estimate Tara provided was very reasonable and predictable. The cost of the pruning is in line with what we paid in the past. As for the quality of work, the folks who trimmed the trees did a great job of pruning and thinning the trees. They raised the canopy and cut the branches to not over hang too far away from the tree to avoid the house and streets. A lot more light makes it through the trees that the Bermuda desperately needs. It is one thing to prune a tree, it is another thing to do it with a aesthetic eye. The trees are really pretty to look at! Once they were done with their work, they cleaned up the mess. The best part, the area had a massive amount of leaves that fell AFTER I picked up a lot of them already. The cleaned the leaves that they could in a short amount of time. With those trees, they still cleaned up A LOT of leaves. This is the third time they have come out for pruning and did a great job. We will see them again in 2 years! read more

I love trees, especially MY trees. I pride myself in taking excellent care of them and heap scorn upon those who allow their trees to begin looking like something out of the evil trees in the wizard of oz. So it was time again for my trees to get a haircut. It has been a while, 2002 was the last heavy duty one, with a few neck shavings in between. Treemasters did the last one and did a great job. I got an estimate from them as well but Austin Tree Experts was about $150 cheaper and also had good reviews, so I thought I'd give them a shot. Micah came out and wrote me an estimate after walking the yard and listening to what I wanted to have done. Within an hour I also had an emailed version to approve online if I wanted. I called to approve the work and they came last Friday at 8 am to start. Micah showed up with the 3 workers and explained the work. The super spoke good English so communication was easy. All 3 were polite and professional. Their cuts were great and watching them work, these weren't some yahoos who are digging ditches one day and trimming trees the next. These guys know their business. They trim what needs to be gone and leave what needs to stay for the health of the trees. They were done by 1pm and left my yard cleaner than it began. In 2015, I requested a bid from them to do a major tree removal as well as some general pruning and shaping, they scheduled and confirmed a consultation, and never showed up for the job. I called and sent a polite email to find out what was up, and received no response. Feb 8th of this year, I requested a bid for some pruning and stump removal. They came this time, gave a bid, we *accepted* the bid, they scheduled a date (Feb 16th)... and never showed up for the job. The online scheduling of a pruning and tree consultation through the webpage was a breeze. Daniel, the owner, called me from my front lawn and essentially gave me my consultation over the phone. I agreed to both projects: pruning of a large hackberry and some maintenance over a young Monterrey Oak. The pruning went smoothly and clean-up was included in the very fair price. The maintenance of the young Monterrey Oak was rather rocky, but Daniel took care of everything. This work included staking, spraying, and radial cutting of the root ball, the last task being rather labor intensive. During the first visit, the initial technician did all of the work except the radial root ball cutting. When he went to leave I pionted out that there were no cuts into the root ball, so he responded by using his shovel to go about 8" deep. I to pressed him further, expressing that the work was incomplete, before he agreed and told me he'd contact Daniel to schedule a follow-up appointment. A few days later my invoice was emailed to me but I didn't receive a call or email. Finally I emailed saying I would not pay until they finished the work. Daniel responded to me directly and told me they'd finish the work in a few days and I was scheduled immediately. Daniel ended up completing the work himself. When I continued to question the work (I'm not normally a skeptic of others' work, particularly when I'm not an expert, but my experience with the first technician left me unsatisfied with their forthrightness) he responded fairly and patiently. We used Austin Tree Experts for multiple services, so I have provided a brief review of each service: Initial Consultation I met with a total of three highly rated (on yelp & Angie's List) arborist/ tree service companies, and I decided to hire Austin Tree Experts to prune and care for all of our trees. Shortly after I hired Austin Tree Experts to care for my property, a tree on my grandfather's property line became an "issue". I had Austin Tree Experts diagnose my grandfather's tree (another great experience working with Austin Tree Experts) Pruning Staff arrived on time. They were friendly and professional. The crew did an amazing job. They managed to remove all the dead limbs and still keep the trees looking healthy and symmetrical. They meticulously cleaned all the dead limbs AND cleaned out the gutters. All for a very reasonable price. Tree Maintenance The price of this service is incredibly reasonable. The arborist assigned to our property, Daniel Priest, is professional, friendly and definitely knows his stuff. Diagnosing/ Treating Sick or Injured Trees My grandfather's neighbor wanted to remove a huge, beautiful pecan tree that grows between the two properties. The neighbors had two legitimate concerns (1) a hole in the tree (2) a large limb that hangs over their driveway and part of their three-story house. The neighbor had a tree company (not monitored by an arborist) look at the tree. The neighbor's "tree company" recommended completely removing the tree. The company the neighbor hired not only misdiagnosed the tree, but also did not know Austin's' laws and regulations regarding Heritage trees. The tree in question was large enough to fall under the Heritage Tree regulations - which would have caused problems/fees if removed without approval. Daniel Preist evaluated the tree and confirmed that the tree could be saved and nursed back to health. He also provided several solutions that would maintain the health of the tree and also address the neighbor's concerns. I was very impressed with how he was able to address both parties concerns without getting invovled in the "issue." Daniel is great! I was referred to Austin Tree Experts by a plumber for some air spade digging around an oak tree root system to reach some collapsed pipe for replacement. They bid on the job, and said they could complete the work in 4 hours. Understandably due to the icy weather last week, my appointment to have this done kept getting pushed back. 2 days of cold and icy weather turned into a 5 day delay for them to complete the work. The only reason it even happened on that fifth day was because I demanded it. On that fifth day, they came out and worked for an hour, then quit citing there being sewage and "that the original job had changed" The original job did not change, they knew they were digging around collapsed drainage pipe from my house. Casey (who is actually very nice and helpful) told me I would have to talk to Micah so he could explain what "the job had changed meant". I called and left voice mails for Micah for 2 days. I even called Casey and asked her to have Micah call me. No one ever did. We cannot use the bathroom in our home currently. We have not been able to use it for an entire month now. Austin Tree Experts is the reason for at LEAST a week of this time. So if you want to get left high and dry, by all means, give them a call. If you want someone to do the job professionally, call someone else. read more

Austin Tree Experts lost a customer today. We've used them once before, and were happy with the results, but today they not only no-showed an appointment, but then continued to show a complete disrespect for my time. When I originally made the appointment, I expressed that I needed Micah to be to the house at 3:00 p.m. sharp because I was meeting him between work appointments. I'm a contractor, so when I take an hour off work, I don't get paid. I was first told that he would show up between 3:00 and 4:00, which did not work for me with my job conflicts. When I tried to reschedule for a time that would be more convenient, I was assured that he would, in fact, be there right at 3:00, so I wouldn't have to worry about missing my 4:00 appointment. Such was not the case. After waiting 20 minutes on the day of the appointment, I called and was told that Micah would be arriving between 3:00 and 4:00 again! I let the scheduler know that I was assured when I made the appointment that he would be on time. Eventually Micah called me and told me that he had been on time to the appointment, but left at 3:05. Really?!? You have a 3:00 appointment and you leave at 3:05 without calling anyone? I doubt this was true, anyway, because when I drove up to the house, my clock said 3:03, and he was no where in site. I was told that the reason he left without calling is because he had my husband's number on file. That's great, but 1) I made sure they had my number when I made the appointment, and 2) they still never called my husband, even though they did have his number. My husband was available and would have made sure to get in touch with me. After getting excuses from Micah, the "Tree Expert," I called the main line to let them know their expert had left without calling anyone, and was met with "Well, what do you want us to do about it?" They asked if I wanted to reschedule, and when I said I would not because they clearly did not respect my time, all they said in reply was "ok." NOT a great way to retain a customer. Keith, the owner, came by to provide an estimate to trim several large oaks. They would not be available to provide services for 3 weeks, but we made an appointment with them anyway. We decided all of our other landscaping plans could wait on this service. The day of the appointment, no one showed up. No one called. I left messages at 1:00pm and again at 2:30. My phone calls were not returned until 5:30pm. Apparently, they weren't going to be able to make it out. The landscaping work scheduled to begin 2 days later would either have to be postponed or the tree work could be rescheduled for 2 weeks later. We were very disappointed with the lack of communication and neglect. They wasted a significant amount of our time. read more

However, after waiting for over 2 weeks for a quote, this is not the level of customer service I would expect from any service company. They came out to my home to provide the initial consultation and provided a quote within a few days. However, when I asked to modify the quote, I got no response for a week (after a phone call and emails) and then an email stating that the quote was attached when it was not. When I emailed back within minutes, letting them know that they forgot the attachment, I did not hear back. A week has gone by and I still have not received a response. I've been in my house about 8 mos, and I discovered I desperately need gutters. Before getting an estimate, I wanted to get the trees pruned the proper distance from the roof. I chose Austin Tree Experts because of their level of expertise. I live in a neighborhood full of oak trees, and up and down my street people have signs that say "Don't prune February thru June." Daniel with Austin Tree Experts assured me that pruning would be safe if done by professionals. Daniel was punctual for the initial consultation/estimate, and the crew was on time and professional on the day they were scheduled to work. While the crew was working, one of my neighbors was concerned about pruning during February. She called the phone number of the side of the truck, and Keith, the owner of the company, actually came out and talked to her in person. Keith explained to me in an email that he has the highest level of arborist certification, and he has sat on numerous boards or panels that make recommendations regarding oak wilt. He explained that if tree limbs are rubbing against the roof, they're already at risk of infection. The crew got the work done and cleaned up after themselves (my yard looked cleaner after they were done than before they started). The next day someone came out to inspect the work and make sure I was satisfied. This is my first house, and it's the only tree service I've ever used. I don't know how their price compares to other companies. But their service and knowledge seems hard to beat. read more
