I called Brent's Tree Service last week to have someone look at a tree. The person who answered the phone was adamant that someone be at the home when the person comes out to get a quote. So I set up a time for today, 5-26-26 at 1630hrs. I get off work at 1600hrs, so I would have time to get home and meet the person coming out. At 07:00 hours, yes, 7:00 in the morning, my phone rings, and it is Brent's Tree Service. I am not even out of bed yet to get ready for work. I had no idea this tree was so important that it required contacting me at 0700hrs. 0800hrs or maybe 0830hrs would seem more appropriate, and I am pretty sure the tree does not care when someone gets there, but 0700hrs is nowhere close to 1630hrs. I knew what the phone call would have sounded like if I answered it. Hey, this is so-and-so, and I happen to be in the area. Can I come by now instead of waiting until the time the scheduler set, since I don't feel like waiting until then? So on the way to work, I called Daryl back to find out what had happened, which constituted a 0700hrs phone call. Go figure, I got a recording from a woman advising me that Daryl was unavailable and to leave a message. I left a message, and Daryl called me back. Daryl asks if he can go by the house and look at the tree, and says he really likes the owner there, but he can make an exception this time. I tell him it is fine and that if my Beagle comes out, he is friendly. Scope of the job: Take out the big limbs of an oak tree that was over 100years old. No branches or little limbs. The smallest diameter limb is probably 6-8 inches. The tree trunk is on a fence line, but access to it is easy, even though one limb extends over the neighbor's backyard. Daryl calls me back a little while later and tells me all about his company, which he co-owns, and how they have been in business for 40 years and are a Harborist. Daryl tells me that this kind of job is normally $3,600.00, but he can do it for $ 3,200.00 + tax. He then tells me when he can get it done. Sounding kind of desperate. I ask Daryl for an invoice I can send to my landlord, who is a construction manager. Her husband is a part-owner in a commercial construction company. At this point, Daryl's demeanor changes. He becomes rude and arrogant, with a complete shift in his tone. He says he will not do the job because landlords never want to pay for this kind of service, and that he should not even be talking to me. Makes a comment that I should not be doing the landlord's legwork, implying that they are being lazy. They are wonderful, hard-working people who live in San Antonio, and I have just signed another lease with them for the 3rd year. He hangs up. Just send me a written quote, Daryl. It does not matter whether I own or rent the home. You would have to give me one as an owner. Which is not different from giving me one so I can give it to the owner. Send my landlord a message about what happened and the name of the company. She sends this back to me, "I actually have dealt with them in the past, and they overquoted me and started being a jerk because I wasn't a man until I told them I was the homeowner, and he tried to be nice again, and I was like NOPE." Hey Daryl, it's obvious you didn't take any communication classes in college, and your self-righteous attitude and the comments you make are costing your company a lot of money. Terrible. Every man they sent out could not speak one word of English. They kept trying to cut THE WRONG trees and my husband was out there trying everything to communicate with them to tell them they weren't the right trees. After they finally got it and the right trees, they did not even trim them down enough as requested as we were trying to keep the top of the trees away from the phone lines. The person that works in the office is really bad about listening. He took down the wrong email address and kept calling me about the invoice, (that I obviously never received because he kept sending it out to the incorrect address) I Talked to this person 3 different times and spelled out the correct email address Everytime and He Still couldn't get it right!!! read more

I did a bunch of work and got 5 freaking estimates for the work and this company was truly middle ground between all of them. I am so thankful for all the hard work and my god the difference is stunning! John MaCuk first came and gave an estimate in a timely manner and was respectful and quick going over everything. He also brought the companies insurance to the first meeting which was perfect because that was my main worry about the cheaper options. I would rather pay a smidge more for no worries at all then worry about if a company is up to date on their insurance or not! I highly recommend giving this company a chance when you need help! Daniel and his crew did a perfect job. Better than I had even asked for, anticipating issues I had not noticed. They removed three enormous "limbs" (more like 25-foot trees themselves) and did it in a tight space without damaging any of the plants, statuary, or my roof. Darryl's quote was reasonable and no-nonsense. The next day, the office called to let me know when the crew was arriving, and every one of the five men working on this job was kind, respectful, and skilled. They did a great job cleaning up. I called asking to schedule a quote to have work done on my property. The man answering the phone was quick to detour my business telling me that the work sounded like it would be under $300 and they do not do small jobs. I tried to explain to him that I dont know the size of what a "small job" is but that I see them servicing our entire neighborhood. I asked him to schedule a quote to find out if we were "qualified" for their services. He was extremely rude saying more or less that my money wasn't worth the work. We have a canopy of trees running along the side of our house and a pecan tree out front that we know needs trimming. We also have inquiries about other parts of our property. read more

Words cannot accurately describe just how awful my experience with Brent's Tree Service has been. I have an oak that I absolutely loved in my front yard. I truly LOVED this tree, and it needed a simple trim. The crew showed up late on the day of service, after 4:00. The crew did not speak any English, so there was no way of communicating with them. My husband stepped inside to answer a call, and assumed they were taking care of the complete removal of another tree, however stepped outside to find that the main tree had been butchered. Ruben is the employee that initially called me to set up the appointment, and he is the one who called requesting payment. I should have known things were going to be difficult with him when he insinuated that I didn't know my own address because he couldn't find it on google maps. I assumed he was just having a bad morning and let it go. However, I did not when he told me I was required to pay in full even though I was terribly disappointed in the work that had been done. We got the opinion of an arborist who agreed that it was trimmed poorly and left it unbalanced. When sharing this conversation with Ruben, he claimed that I was lying. Each conversation with him has felt as if I'm talking with an immature teenager. I've asked to speak to someone else who could help me and he claimed that there is no one above him and I would only be talking with him. I've never received such terrible treatment from a company. These conversations now seem like harassment and when I requested he speak to my lawyer going forward, he said that he did not have to and would only talk to me. I should also add that I told him in the beginning that I would pay for everything except for the service that was done on this one tree. Working in sales with homeowners myself, I truly wanted to be fair. Ruben wouldn't have it. He eventually lowered my bill by $100. So $100 ruined my beautiful oak tree. I went from being so upset about the tree, to furious about how this man has handled the situation. After hanging up with him today, my 10 yo daughter said, "He sounds like he's just trying to make you mad." A 10 year old! Do not use this company! Their website specifies "satisfaction guaranteed" and that is absolutely not the case! The work of the tree trimming guys is amateur at best, and the customer service is the worst I've ever experienced. I should also add that the guy that did the stump work and the arborist were both great and I would love to hire them separately from Brent's in the future. I noticed that that in the company's description here on Yelp it shares Will Brent as being the owner. I asked to speak to him specifically and was told that he is retired and doesn't take phone calls. I also love that his faith is mentioned, as mine is also extremely important to me, but employees like Ruben really ruin the image of a company. read more

We used Brent's three times prior and unfortunately recommended them to others who have also used them. That last two times I requested service I never received a call back. They said "I was on the list" and never got a call back. They obviously don't value return customers or ones who recommend them to others. We recently worked with Brent's Tree Service to do a major trim of our 8-10 100+ year old oak trees. We went with them because my Father in law had used them in the past and was happy with the job they did. Darryl came out initially to walk the property and give us a quote. He was nice enough but spoke over my husband and was very brash in the initial conversations. However, he seemed thorough and we felt good about the work to be done. To note, Darryl himself mentioned limbs above public streets should be trimmed to at least 14ft high. A day or two later, the crew was coming out to start the job. Given the amount of work to be done, we assumed the crew would be out to our house in the morning time that first day to start. The afternoon came and went and no one had shown. My husband contacted Darryl who let him know the guys were called to a last minute job and would be at our house that evening. They showed up around 5:00p to start and worked until dark. We were very pleased with the crews (2 came) and their hard work. They did about half of the job that evening. My husband called Darryl the next day or so to check in and make sure they weren't done as well as address what we were still looking to have done. Darryl was VERY rude and unprofessional, kept cutting my husband off saying "WE AREN'T DONE!" "WE AREN'T DONE!" The crew showed up a couple of days after the initial start of the job to finish up.When they were done, it was clear the job was still not complete because limbs over the street were not trimmed to 14ft and we had limbs growing over to our neighbor's house as well as some other general clean up. However, the following day, we received a call from Brent's office asking for payment. Their website makes it clear that payment is not required until you are 100% satisfied with the work done. My husband let them know about the rest that needed done and we were told we would receive a call the next day to discuss what was left. No one called. My husband had to call again the following day and wait for a call back. We finally did hear back and a crew came out later that day to finish everything. When my husband called to provide payment, he received the run around from Darryl regarding a 15% coupon we had received in the mail. Darryl again was incredibly rude saying he couldn't honor it because he was already giving us a discount (which had not been mentioned previously). After some discussion, he finally agreed to give us the remaining discount. All of this to say, the crews that came out and actually did the work did a wonderful job. We are very happy with how our trees look! Our main complaint is the lack of professionalism exhibited by Darryl. He does not seem to be the right fit for the position he holds in the company and dealing with him is typically not pleasant. I see other reviews echoing this same sentiment and it would be hard to give a company that is run this way our business again. We have been using Brent's Tree Service for over a decade. We have 4 huge oak trees on our lot and they always look great after the crew has gone. Sometimes we do walk around with them and request a little touch up here and there - not because they don't do a good job but just for things we are a little more picky about. And they quickly respond to our requests. Plus the clean up job is phenomenal. Prices have gone up in the last couple of years but they have to with the price of gas. They bring their own chipper and do it right on site (we love that part especially) and both the truck and the chipper run on diesel so - with gas prices today - what else can you expect? We've only asked one other company to give us an estimate and it was more than twice what Brent's charged us. They were here this morning and the trees look fabulous! Let's be clear - I love my trees. Really. So, when I needed some tree work and I called several places for estimates. Brent's Tree Service was very professional from the get - go. The estimator (John) was quick, prepared, and pleasant. He arrived in a marked vehicle and in uniform. He had the courtesy to call me when en-rout as well. He gave me my related options. He did not engage in any pressure sales tactics. When I chose Brent's Tree to do the job I contacted John, who was very prompt with communication. He was also spot - on with how much time the project would take to complete - far less time, in fact, then other companies projected. The project cost was below others as well. When the crew arrived they were uniformed and in marked vehicles. They were pleasant too. They completely cleaned up after themselves, They removed all reasonable traces of their work. The job was complete in two hours, within two days of scheduling. Good stuff. To top off this very positive transaction, Jerry the owner called me himself the very next day to check on the finished job, and thank me for my business! I am so impressed. I was traumatized as a child by the many weekends my parents made me mow, weed, pick up rocks, etc. so in general as an adult I tend to avoid working around the house when possible. Last year, I noticed that during storms tree branches were hitting the house. (Well, I'd probably noticed that for a year or two, but it was getting really bad). I do have one of those saws on a stick for when I'm feeling studly and want to prune a tree, but looking around the house it looked like there were a zillion branches that had grown near the house. They did a good job of trimming all around the house, not pruning the big branch I told them not to prune, and none of the trees died. I was referred to Darryl at Brents Tree Service by my neighbor. He didn't answer the first time, so I tried again, missed him, but then he called right back. I asked him for an estimate to finish cutting down a partly broken tree limb at my house. He said he could tell me how much it would cost just based on texting him a few photos; so I took some photos and sent them over, and sure enough he called right back with an estimate. So far, so good. He quoted me a price that was higher than another estimate that I had received, but I still thanked him, said I was getting a few more estimates, and would be in touch as needed. At that point, his tone changed completely. "You're getting estimates for THAT?!" he scoffed. He told me the that tree branch was sure to fall down any minute and that I was silly to be calling around for estimates. He acted like I had begged him to fit me into his schedule and even got defensive, as if I was turning down a favor. When I made it clear that I was still intending to get estimates, he said, "I'm out. I don't need that!" and hung up. In our brief interactions, Darryl managed to be rude, belittling, and manipulative. I can't speak to his work--he may be a great tree trimmer--but I would never recommend someone who treats potential customers like that. read more
