When Austin had it's Freezeopolis this spring, I was woken up to a very large thump. I just attributed it to ice falling from trees or something like that. Suzie jumped up out of bed and disappeared and then a muted OMG came from the front of the house. Irritated, I get up go into our guest bedroom and looked outside. Holy Moly, our legacy oaks were decimated. I was staring at a very large limb which was laying against our newly installed windows. How it didn't break through the window or screen was a wonder. As the morning progressed and the devastation all around our house and our neighbors, the gravity of what had transpired hit home. I do not have the resources or the physcial ability to move the branches to street etc. I got on the phone and called our long term tree company and not suprisingly got a message voice mail. I never did hear back from them. While hanging outside, thinking of what our next steps would be a young man pulled over in his car, came over and handed me a flyer. Yeah, here comes the... "Hey Brah, I got a chain saw and my boy's can fixt this for you for $$$ pitch." Nope, he just let me know his pa owned a tree company and I should give him a call. The business was "The Tree Man" and we had tried to hire these guys in the past. So, what the heck, I called and actually got a human or I think I may have left a message and got a call back right away. She was extremely helpful and let me know they were getting indudated with calls. However, since our driveway was blocked and we couldn't leave our home, she said she would try to get me in quickly. By the end of the day, I got a call back and was told a crew would be out the next day, probably around lunch time. The next afternoon, a sea of dudes with chainsaw's, saws, trucks and ropes descended on our property. The owner came over, shook my hand gave me a quote and off they went fixing everything. We had guys hanging from the trees, guys cutting everything up and cleaning up after themselves and then they were gone. I think they knocked the whole job out in 35-40mins. Efficient, quick and off they went to their next job. We needed several large trees on our property trimmed, as well as some overhanging branches from neighboring trees. I had 3 different tree companies come out for quotes, and Austin Tree Man was, by far, one of the most reasonable. Jason told me exactly what would be done to each tree and seemed very knowledgeable. My only reason for four and not five stars, is that there was quite a bit of confusion over scheduling. Originally set for a Tuesday, then I was called on Saturday to see if they could instead come on Monday. I gave my okay but when Monday morning went by and no one had shown up, I called and was told that there was some confusion in their schedule and we would be back on for Tuesday. I was told that we were their first job and they would be there between 7:30 and 8 a.m. We got up extra early to make sure our dog could potty in the backyard and that the gates were unlocked. At 9:30 they had not shown up or called me. So, once again, I contacted them. I was told it was the sudden onset of cold weather that hit that caused a delay. Icy cold weather is indeed a very good reason to be late! However, I would suggest to the owners that they implement a better communication system with their clients. Almost everyone texts these days, and a quick text giving an ETA or a reason for delay would be a great business courtesy to start putting into practice. The crew of guys that came were very polite, did exactly the job that was quoted to me, and cleaned up nicely afterwards. I would use Austin Tree Man again. read more

I had a very frustrating experience with this company. Despite my being friendly and understanding of their scheduling issues, they wasted 7 weeks of my time before ultimately ghosting me. They were friendly, but I had to follow up with them over 10 times just to get a timeline for an estimate, which they repeatedly failed to follow through on. They stopped answering and returning calls, and when I emailed them asking for a timeline or to at least let me know if I should move on, they never responded (over 2 weeks ago now). It seems that this company has issues separate from the ice storm, which has made them uniquely unable to operate as a professional company would. In the end, I had to give up on them and find another company with an arborist, who has been communicative, knowledgeable, on time, and great to work with. As a longtime customer, I regret not choosing a different company from the start, as this one has consistently been flaky, made mistakes in the past (cutting down the wrong tree), and has now endangered my oak with their delays (forcing its pruning into oak wilt season). I called five or six places, getting either voicemails or $150 consultation fee quotes for arborists who couldn't come for weeks. BUT -- miraculously! My two Live Oak trees in the front yard were touching over the roof and had lots of deadwood in the canopy. I needed some reliable help asap or else I'd have some damage to the roof (and easy route for rodents). I called four different companies to get estimates and The Treeman gave me the best quote. They were very easy to schedule, contacting me via text which I requested, and they followed up quickly, coming out for an estimate a few days later. They did great work, clearing all the deadwood from the underneath of my trees and clearing the branches touching the roof. They also trimmed back some minor small trees on the side of my house when I asked. I was very impressed by them and will definitely call them next time! I asked Jason to to do a light trim on three Arizona cypress trees in my backyard. These are Christmas tree shaped evergreen conifers that grow 30-40 feet tall. My trees had gone a bit bushy, so I thought I'd benefit from a light trim. Jason had an employee who had done the same last year, and did a wonderful job. While I'm sure I could have been more clear about what I was asking for, I did say specifically at different times that I had wanted my trees to be pruned lightly, and to help them look more more like Christmas trees (i.e., more triangular, less bushy). Jason didn't listen to the message. He proceeded to cut them back by a huge amount, trimming them in a roundish form, as if they were bushes. He even chose to cut off the tops of the main trunks!! I'm attaching a picture of the top trunk cut off of one of the trees as evidence. What's amazing is that he did this careless hack job, then asked me if it was what I wanted. A little suggestion: Ask that question before it's too late. As it is, my trees are severely deformed, and I can only hope they'll eventually grow back into shape. Bonus note -- Jason also trimmed a red oak in my front yard, but left with a branch still intertwined in the power line, even though removing that had been a specific ask. My follow-up email to Jason about both the Arizona Cypresses and Red Oak went unresponded. read more

I needed a couple of relatively small dead trees cut to the ground plus typical tree trimming -- dead limbs, low branches, cut back growth from house, etc. The owner (Jason) came by and bid the Job lower than the other company. Additionally, The Tree Man had great reviews from local neighborhood website. They (owner + 6 or so men) did the job quickly and efficiently. What has typically taken a 1/2 day or more, they accomplished in a couple of hours. Also, good advice from owner on a red bud tree -- the other tree trimming service said it was dead and needed to be removed, Jason said it was still alive and should not be cut down. Suddenly several of our front trees have grown big balls. You know, as in: Ball moss!! How did this happen? Jason, The Tree Man says it is "bird poop". Well, at least the birds like our trees. But it can happen even when they do a fly over. We got three quotes, some very good information from all of them, but his was a little less and he was willing to get more of the ball moss compared to the other quotes.
