Large variety of plants! This nursery is beautiful and very cool. Purchased my first bonsai today and the staff were super helpful. Great pot selection as well!

Great plant variety! I have always been able to find what I'm needing and look at all the fun plants they have. Great location for central Austin folks as well. I went on a holiday and they had free lemonade as well!

    How nice!

Beautiful nursery, decent selection as well. The greenhouse area was delightful. So many options, I didn't interact with the staff so no comment on service. And didn't purchase, just browsed around.

I visited The Great Outdoors to spruce up my backyard. This nursery did not disappoint. They offer an overwhelming amount of plants, both outdoor and indoor, soils and mulch, and beautiful pottery. They also offer some rare variety plants but understandably, at a premium price. Service is very friendly. They even offer free drainage hole drilling if the pots you're buying do not have drainage holes. I left The Great Outdoors with a few star jasmine to climb up the side of my house and I'm so excited for the fragrant flowers they produce! I also purchased a baby staghorm fern, baby umbrella tree and beautiful marbled terracotta pots for them to live in. So check this place out to elevate your space!

Weird creepy alter at a plant shop

Service-Service is there if you need it all you have to do is ask. But the employees don't really talk to you otherwise so they're not very warm and welcoming. Maybe they're pretty busy I understand. Selection - selection is really good although pretty overpriced especially with the plant market bottoming out in 2025. Plants are no longer valuable and should not be expensive. But their prices are still price very expensive like it was back in the 2019 through 2021 plant craze. So they definitely never did adjust their price according to the current market value. The main thing I'm writing this is because I was kind of weirded out by the Idol worship in the greenhouse. I'm not sure why this company chose to bring religion into a public non-religious facility. There is a time and place for religion, but a plant nursery is not yet. Play should stick with retail and capitalism on nature. Yes, I will continue to come here as I do on a regular basis. Sometimes I buy sometimes I just look around. Thank you for your time to read this.

My friend and I popped in here today and we had a lovely time perusing the grounds. It's like a free visit to a botanical garden. Everything is so well cared for and abundant. We finally left with a Pride of Barbados. He needed something for this front yard that is full sun. You can't go wrong with a POB. They are stunning!! Everyone that worked there was helpful and kind. They had a dog water bowl and some water for humans. It was quite toasty this afternoon. There is plenty of parking too.

Love love love this spot for all things yard! They help me with specific needs (like a spray to repel caterpillars from my dill) & help de iding on plants for certain light/ shade conditions in my yard. I've gotten herbs & indoor/ outdoor plants from here for years now, and this is a fantastic spot to just park & walk around, too! It's definitely a "happy place" for me! Been coming here since before my kiddo was born, and he's grown up visiting! Keep up the great work, yall!

Lovely nursery with everything you need for your next indoor or outdoor plant. Staff was nice. A great selection

Ask the Community - The Great Outdoors

    Do they take apple pay?

    Yes

Do you sell Meyer Lemon Trees that are producing fruit? Last one I purchased took 4 years and it was full and beautiful but did not survive the recent freeze and would love one that is mature and producing fruit this summer. Victoria

Hello Victoria! We do have Meyer Lemon in stock in several sizes, but unfortunately, none of them are in flower just yet, but they usually start making fruit at 3-5 years so it shouldn't be long! Thanks for writing. Tom

Do they sell pond plants and/or pond fish?

If I remember correctly I did see a koi pond. Don't know if equipment for filtration or extent of pond equipment is available for sale.

    Are dogs allowed?

Hi Emily, YES!! We love dogs. You and your 4 legged friends are always welcome. Thanks for asking.

This fancy-pants "nursery" in North Austin offers financing for your project (or partners with…read moresomeone who does). That should tell you: it's looking for customers with fat wallets. I asked if they were a native plant nursery on the phone and the salesman responded "we guarantee all our plants, so we wouldn't be doing that for plants that won't grow well here." NOTE: That is not an affirmative answer--it's an evasion. Selection is limited to medium to large containers, and well-established trees in MASSIVE containers (those certainly require delivery, I'm thinking). No seedlings or small containers, that I could see. This was a huge disappointment, since I was led to believe I was going to a native plant nursery, and that I would be offered assistance and advice. Neither turned out to be true. This nursery really wants you to buy into letting THEM do the work for your "project," from design to installation to maintenance. If you've got unlimited cash to burn and you want to pay them to maintain their work, go for it! This doesn't feel like a place where you can come as a gardening novice and get advice and ideas--what you're going to get (assuming that someone decides to speak to you while you're there--someone did speak to me in fact, to tell me nicely to move out of the way) is an upsell--or a brush-off, if you're deemed too small-fry to waste their time with you. Of course this impression is formed by a few minutes on the phone where the SALESMAN (not gardener, not plant expert) encouraged me to bring in photos of my yard so they could help with the design, followed by an excited trip to the nursery, and discovering that what's here is mostly large containers, lots of very large trees (get three large trees for only $10,000!), and lots of (I think) non-natives. Don't come here if you want to learn how to do things yourself. If you want full sized trees to plop into the ground and someone to do the work of maintaining them, or you really like the idea of financing an instantly landscaped yard without having to do anything but open your wallet or going into substantial debt--then Moon Valley may be just the place for you.

Most likely you'll first park your vehicle, then walk in the main entrance with its grand rustic signage. Perhaps you might miss the rope swing to your left, and instead you might be drawn to the rows of plants on your right. You might snake in further to under the tarp covered area. Or perhaps you'll venture inside the building at the front. You might check out their aviary, try to find their two tortoises, turtles, or admire their pottery selection. If you go in far enough, lights string themselves between trees towering above you. If you go all the way back, you'll find a sheltered greenhouse area with some neat displays. In the fountain area, water will be aerated, and alligator heads will float around. You might go around reading signage describing various plants, how they can be used, conditions in which they thrive, or how they drip irrigate their nursery plants. Some signs suggest they can source plants for you if needed. You might encounter the friendly people running the place who'll explain to you how everything works. But other, it's a nice e area to walk around. Across the other side of the parking lot, they have a museum set up inside a large garage. Entry to this nursery is free, but if you're looking to buy a plant, you can grab a cart, find your selection, and then bring it over to one of the checkout stations that they have setup. Otherwise, there is plenty of space to walk around and explore.
