We had just come from the big-box garden center, so walking into a nursery with **SHADE**, beautiful healthy plants, reasonable prices, and people who actually care about what they're selling felt downright luxurious. The staff was attentive, kind, and genuinely knowledgeable--and, most importantly to us, they clearly give a darn about native plants and the ecosystem they're going into. They had **actual native milkweeds for our monarchs**, including Asclepias tuberosa, and I was thrilled to see that they **do not sell tropical milkweed**. That alone tells me this is a nursery paying attention rather than just stocking whatever will sell. And the whole place just feels *loved*. There are thoughtful little details everywhere to enhance the experience. At one point, classical music was playing (seriously) while we wandered around freely (and finally not sweating) on a summer Saturday, looking at gorgeously curated plants, and I thought, "Well, I guess this is where we buy things now?" Grateful to Green Planet for saving us the gas money we used to spend driving down to Natural Gardener. Compared to the big boxes: Cooler, cheaper, kinder, more chill, more knowledgeable, more beautiful--and you're supporting a local place that actually seems to care about what grows well here. The owner, a sweet curly-haired redhead, was all warmth and knowledge from the second we walked in. She's got it all here: propagated starter plants perfect for newbies, bigger statement pieces for indoor and outdoor gardening, succulents, pots, and even cute accessories that make you want to redecorate your patio. It's small, but it has heart. Pricing is a bit of a mystery. Very few plants are labeled, so you just have to trust her when she throws out a price. Everything seemed pretty reasonable and affordable, though. I grabbed plant food, a pot of Cuban oregano, and another medium-sized plant all for $35. I liked the price but I couldn't tell you exactly what each item cost. Personally, I didn't mind, but a little transparency would go a long way. Back to the husband: he's a bit dismissive and he scowls. He doesn't greet customers. But my two cents? Sir...If you don't want to deal with people, maybe hang out somewhere else during business hours. Customers come for the plants and the experience. Not to feel like they're crashing your day. But the nursery itself is adorable, the plants are healthy, the prices are reasonable, and the owner is a delight. For years, I've justified their outrageous prices because of the location and convenience, although between the consistently chaotic parking situation and the overall experience, I'm not even sure how convenient it really is. The customer service has always left a lot to be desired. The staff often come across as dismissive, pretentious, and generally inconvenienced by the presence of actual customers. I've overlooked that for years because I love plants and prefer supporting local nurseries over big-box stores. What I can no longer overlook is the declining quality of the plants and the increasingly disappointing selection. When you're charging premium prices, customers should be able to expect premium plants, knowledgeable and welcoming service, and a worthwhile shopping experience. Unfortunately, lately, I'm not seeing much of any of those things. It also feels like their pricing reflects the lack of nearby competition more than the actual value of what they're selling. When the closest alternative is Lowe's, I suppose they can get away with it. After nearly 15 years, I've finally reached the point where I'd rather drive farther for better quality, fairer prices, and employees who actually seem happy to have customers. We went with a couple of friends who are more experienced. The store manager, Nick, was very patient in helping us select every single component needed to start a hydroponics system. At no point during the process did we feel he was trying to up sell us anything. He informed us several options based our needs and mainly that is to grow herbs and leafy greens. To make the experience more pleasant was that Nick helped us drill the necessary holes in the buckets to install the hose and overflow valves. Nick also provided us with clear instructions about the planting process, ensuring right pH level in water and how to do that, and typically when we should be migrating the seedlings into the planting bucket. Quite honestly, I never knew that there were so many permutations of succulents. I actually believe I might be able to keep a succulent alive since they require little maintenance. I learned from the store manager that they host succulent parties. That would be a cool way to spend time with family and friends. In addition, while they have some beautiful plants, some can be a bit pricey. With that said, there is a section of the store that has some reasonably priced smaller plants.
