I like Hillside! They're local, they have an interesting variety, and they're straight up with you. "No, that won't work in the shade." I appreciate that! Not the most customer service-oriented place, it's true, but if you go in and say you need to ask some questions of somebody knowledgeable, they dang well send you out somebody knowledgeable! Their nursery is beautiful BUT customer service is poor. I've been there twice. The first time no one acknowledged us as we looked around and the check out person was indifferent. I thought it was probably a bad day. I went back last weekend and walked around outside for at least 45 minutes. I was the only one on the site; no one came over and asked if they could help. However, there was a sign that said, "you're on camera!". When I went in to ask a question the clerk explained 2 kinds of Agave that I was interested in so I went outside to look. Came back in and asked if she could show me one of them because I couldn't find it. She said, oh, we don't carry that one. I then called them the next day to ask a question and left a message asking if they could call me. 3 days later - no call. Customer service means more to me than the plants. Nice Nursery with a good selection. I recently bought a couple thousand dollars worth of plants and trees. One of the trees didn't make it. I bought a fig with several other fruit trees in March and none of them had leaves . I planted all of them except for the fig. It never came out of dormancy. I returned to Hillside to exchange the dead tree. The manager said it was still alive and they do not allow for returns. She also said she would give me a 20% discount on the fig, full of leaves and healthy. Same grower and same size. I was also buying a citrus tree. I was a loyal customer that spent thousands of dollars there. What a shame that she treats customers with such indifference. I have a large property with an orchard and vegetable garden and lawn. I would have spent thousands more there over time. I would like to support this local business but will not as they showed me the value they placed on my patronage. I will go to the big box stores, where at least I can expect bad service at lower prices. read more

I just love this family-owned Georgetown business. A nice selection of perennials with some annuals as well. Appears they are careful about supplying only what's right for the season and will work with you to find plants suitable for your level of shade and soil. I've shopped here regularly for the past 2 years. Yes, they are pricey, but they have a great selection of plants, and employees were helpful. This spring I wanted to hire them to redo my courtyard flowerbeds. I expected to spend several thousand dollars but I believed it would be worth it. I made an appointment for a consultation and was a bit disappointed that I had to wait 6 weeks for it. Well, the day of my appointment came and went....yep, they were a no show, not even a phone call. I didn't call them because I didn't want to hear any lame excuses. When i called to check on order everyone at hillside took up for him and he was no where to be found. Instead of manager apologizing she took up for him also. BUYER BEWARE!!! Sadly, Hillside Nursery has an "all sales are final" policy that also applies to defective products. I spent over $100 (with tax) for a beautiful planter pot. Within 3 months, the external coating started to peel. I contacted the nursery manager and was refused a replacement or refund; the most she would offer me was a 20% discount on a replacement. This is very disappointing, as I had hoped to buy other pots because of their wide selection (despite the fact they are rather over-priced). My wife and I went to Hillside Nursery to buy a tree. As we drove up I noticed they had chopped limestone and I needed a few pieces to finish a project, I got 1100 lbs of the stone. My wife was inside and paid for the tree and the stone. I did not ask the price of the stone. I found out after we got home, my wife said she paid $.25 per pound. That price is three times higher there than the normal $.08 per pound at other stone places in Georgetown. I called three times to see if I could return about 8 pieces that I did not use. I was told I would receive a call back each time. I have heard nothing from Hillside. They seem to only want you to buy there once, because they are not responsive when there might be a problem . I went there today for the first time. It's a pretty large nursery and I liked the set up but I was in shock over the prices. They are very expensive. I am sure their plants are nice but many are from the same wholesale nursery as what you get at Home Depot. I won't go there for plants again. Nice layout, clean, and orderly. I have been about five times as of this writing. I enjoy going to this garden center. It may not be the least expensive, but I usually find what I need. The staff has always been friendly and helpful to me. If I need them to show me something and I cannot find it, I ask someone to show me and they always have. I usually go for salad greens like kale, chard, spinach, beets, herbs, lettuce's, strawberries, soil, and more. read more

We purchased 3 large agave plants and also paid to have them delivered and installed. Our drip irrigation was above ground and visible. I even made a point to tell the to be careful and not cut the hoses. So much for that after they left we realized they did cut one of the lines. Set up an appointment for the husband to come out to give an estimate to landscape the circle in our drive, he never showed up or called to say he wasn't coming. I purchased a landscaping plant on Saturday afternoon, The clerk informed me that only exchanges or store credit would be allowed if returned. I took it home and decided it was not going to work. I tried to take it back a few hours later but they decided to close early, I checked their website and it stated they were closed on Sunday. Placed the plant in the garage. Early Monday morning I tried to exchange the plant but was asked if I knew how to read "All Sales Final". I asked for an exchange or store credit but the older woman said I had not taken care of the plant properly in the 36 hours I had it and told me she would offer me no exchange or store credit. This was a $30.00 plant (over priced) and was taken back to the nursery in the same exact condition it was purchased. Hillside Nursery did a poor job of installing sod at my house. They are very hard to communicate with since they don't return calls. I was left with a lot of work to salvage the lawn. I had to use six bags of top soil to fill in all the gaps between pieces of sod. I pulled a lot of weeds that came with the sod. And I still need to level the lawn so I can mow it without jamming the mower every time a wheel sinks into one of the low spots they left by not adding extra soil under the skinny pieces of sod. read more

We had a patio and grass installed and a 2 year lawn maintenance setup. The work was actually started before the stated date, which was great! The grass is doing terrific and looks very good. The patio is nice but I thought the pavestone was to be sealed with paver leveling sand like PermaSand. Now, the patio has "caved in" in some areas after rain. We have not received any response to our email. We asked about lawnmowing services and have not received any follow-up to this either. I believe they are so busy they may accidentally overlook our requests. They actually did not send an invoice until close to three weeks after the work was completed. I feel their work is very good. It is just discouraging to consistently not get a return email or call to our messages. Otherwise, it would be a five star rating. read more

I needed St. Augustine sod for some patchwork on my yard. I called yesterday to confirm they had it, and I was told they did and it was quite reasonably priced per square. This morning I get up at 7am and drive out to pick up the sod. I arrived 10 minutes early and noticed while walking around, looking and waiting for them to open, that some of the plants looked a little stressed. I also noticed pallets of old, dry sod, left to die but thought the good stuff must be out of sight. As soon as the doors were unlocked I go in and ask to purchase the sod I called about yesterday. I was told they only have the old, dry, pretty much straw sod out on the pallets that I already saw. WHAT!?! Who tells their customers they have sod when in fact they only have practically dead and dry sod? I just drove 25 miles each way (frustrating Austin Metro miles, not regular miles... you KNOW what I mean.) to pick up what I assumed was healthy sod. I mean, why not be honest and tell anyone up front that it's 1inch from dead and practically straw. A complete waste of time, miles, and fuel. I've just gotten home and posted this immediately to help others stay away from this nonsense. I only post real and balanced reviews when needed, and not for stats or titles. I paid $50 for an estimate to replace some plants and update the front yard. They were supposed to show up on May 25th to start the work. Waited all day and no one showed. I went to their business the following week and met with them in person and was given an assurance a crew would be there the next day. No one showed up again. I've shopped at Hillside a few times. The last time was the last time! I purchased a couple of "staked Yews". When I got them home I found that the branches were damaged due to the staking method. They don't guarantee their plants. "All Sales are Final". Their prices are comparatively high side and the plants, in general, are average in appearance. So check your plants very carefully before purchasing because, once you pay they are yours. read more

I called Monday the 8th, AM, hoping to get trees in the ground Friday the 12th, but willing to accept Monday the 15th...as a Mother's Day gift. The person asked me to plz txt them my information, and they would send a quote. I did not receive a quote until Wednesday, the 10th. I asked if Friday was still possible, and asked them to adjust the quote, as they added more trees than I asked for. They said no...Friday is not possible. Prior to receiving an adjusted quote, they informed me, on Wednesday the 10th, that the trees I wished to purchase were not available...out of stock. It took from Monday when I first asked, till late Wednesday to let me know the trees I wished for were unavailable.
