They did not seal cuts. Several cuts of branches removed were not very flush with main trunk. Trees look great & they did a nice cleanup job After my review on their survey, they called to say that they planned all along to do these things, but didn't because it was raining. An estimator (who arrived late and didn't call ahead as promised) took copious notes about pruning trees and clearing underbrush on my 1/2-acre lot. He estimated that it would take two days, which seemed right to me. I asked him about the length of a "day", and he told me 8 hours, and that his crews "really went at it". He also said that because of the complexity of the job he would show up to be sure that the crew understood what to do. He didn't show, and I had a hard time communicating with the crew chief, whose first language isn't English. The crew spent a total of 12.5 hours on-site during their two days on the job. (I didn't keep a close watch on them, so I don't know how much of the 12.5 hours involved actual work.) On the plus side, the crew met my expectations in their pruning of trees and shaping of the many yaupons (large and dwarf) on my lot. However, there was supposed to be more to it than that. When I walked the crew chief through what had to be done in addition to pruning trees and shaping yaupons, I told him about the underbrush, which included some bamboo encroaching from a neighbor's yard, ligustrums, hackberries, and other undesirable growth. He focused on the bamboo, and none of the other underbrush was touched. There would have been plenty of time to deal with it -- if the crew had given me two full days. UPDATE: I have discovered, belatedly, that SM Tree Service considers a "full day" to be about 6 hours on the job. So I got two "full days", as contracted. But the estimator led me to believe that all of the work we discussed would be accomplished in those two days. It wasn't, thus my disappointment. SM Tree Service needs to be upfront about the amount of time that a crew will actually be on-site, so that customers aren't disappointed and feel that they get their money's worth. As I say above, the crew did good work -- just not as much work as I was led to believe it would do. read more

We have been in our home for almost 4 years and knew it was time to do some serious maintenance on our trees. Terrible customer service, overpriced work, disabled our air conditioner and left shoddy mess. Last week we paid $1,400 for what they call "full-day tree service" to have them trim some trees. That night it was very hot in our house so the next day I called to schedule an air conditioner repairman to come check it out. Luckily my husband went out and took a look at the unit before the repair guy showed up because I'm sure they would have charged us to remove the branches that were sticking out of the unit that the tree cutters hadn't bothered to clean up. Then this weekend I noticed a giant tree limb hanging by a thread right over our deck, gazebo and backdoor. I texted their "emergency hotline" but got no response. When I reached out to them this morning, Tracy just wanted to argue with me about how it couldn't be their fault, even though I sent her photos showing that they had cut a giant dead limb that was directly above this one. I feel pretty sure that the one they cut hit the lower one and broke it on it's way down. I told her if she would send someone out to look at it, they would probably agree with me. We had just paid them $1,400 a week ago to trim the trees. She said if she sends someone out to look at it then they wouldn't be able to do it until a week from now, or we could pay $300 and they would cut it this Wednesday! We've been using their tree services since 2013 to the tune of thousands of dollars, but they don't care. All they care about is making as much money as possible. read more

I have wanted to remove two hackberry trees from my backyard for years but I was reluctant because I was uncertain about what was a fair cost and how reliable the company could be as far as property damage to my home or my neighbors home. I finally decided to do some research and I came upon Sid Mourning's Tree Service and watched a video of Sid being interviewed on our local PBS show. From the way he spoke, I felt a sense that this person knew what he was talking about and had been in the business for a long time and I chose Sid to come out and give me a quote. He was prompt for his appointment time and when I showed him what I wanted done he gave me a quote on the first tree. I then asked him to take a look at a second tree that I was considering having removed at some later date. As soon as he saw the second tree he showed me how it was growing into the roof of my house and told me that this was the serious concern and it had to be taken out. We agreed on a price for the two trees and set a date for their removal. I was informed ahead of time that they were insured and that I could expect the crew at 8:30 on Monday morning. Monday morning came and promptly the crew of four arrived and proceeded to take out the two trees. It was anticipated that it would take a day and a half to remove them but they worked so fast and so diligently that they accomplished the task in one day. To their credit the crew did an exemplary job. Not only did they remove the two trees without any damage to surrounding structures, but they also graciously took out a small tree that was pretty much a weed and also trimmed off some hedges and took a few branches off of another bush that was touching the house. After everything was done they took their leaf blower and rakes and made sure that everything was picked up and hauled away and I could not be happier. I know I will have future needs and I will not hesitate one second to call Sid and have his crew return for any future work I may need. I am thoroughly impressed. If anyone has any doubts I would be glad to offer my telephone number or email address as part of this testimonial. I permit Sid Mourning to give out that information to anyone who may have any concerns about having their trees removed. Okay, so this is an interesting one. Called the company after finding the reviews on YELP, and Sid showed up the same day. He stormed through the entire property in less than 10 minutes and said everything will be done. He quoted me $1350 to complete the job (and that the job would be done in one day). After some price matching policy, which they stated they had one, they agreed to $1000. Long story short, the crew and management have terrible communication. The crew actually does really good work, and very fast, but they do what they're told to do. Nothing more, and sometimes less. They showed up the first day and went right at it. But, they weren't told that they had to trim the trees in the backyard (really?)... So they had to come back the next day to do that. Sid then said he would take the stumps down to FLUSH with ground level, instead of the initially promised BELOW ground level, insisting that you can "throw a little bit of dirt on top, and grass will grow just fine, and you'll never notice a thing." Then they said they can't get the stumps to ground level, that a stump grinder would have to come back out to finish the job. They then asked me to pay $800 to the crew (which I foolishly did), and then pay the balance of $200 to the stump grinder. One week after the project started (not one day like I was told), the stump grinder (Ray) shows up... who is dressed and looks like he could be the uncle of Honey Boo Boo. He's an interesting character, but this isn't about him. He tells me I'll have to pay an additional $100 on top of the $200..., and that Good Morning won't pay more than $200. (So Good Morning's budget was eaten up by the fact they had to have the crew come back out the 2nd day because the crew leader wasn't aware they had to trim the trees in the back yard. So because of this error, they didn't have enough in their budget to pay for the tree grinding....) So, really, this is my advice to you all: If you're going to use this company, which I would advice against, make sure you get EVERY SINGLE DETAIL written down on the contract... they referenced what was "on the contract" many times when coming up with their excuses. Also, do NOT pay them until EVERYTHING is completed. PS - You should know that I did NOT ask them to do anything more than what was promised to me by Sid. In fact, his initial promise to grind the stumps below ground level was changed to flush, and even that wasn't done. ZERO stars for SID and the company. +1 Star because Tracy is very pleasant to work with, but alas she works for SID. read more

This was the second time I used Sid Mourning Tree Service. This time was a half day job to take out an old Red Oak that had died. Part of it hung over the pool and the other over the propane tank. The guys did great work keeping debris out of the pool and never an issue with the part over the propane tank. They were awesome and did an great job at cleaning up afterwards. read more

I found GM Tree Company the way I think a lot of people do - by their flyers that get put on doors. Previous tree guy retired, so we were looking for a new tree company. They were really prompt (came out and gave an estimate within 5-6 hours) on giving a quote on what I fully admit was a pretty small job (a couple of limbs out of reach and a bit too thick for me to handle). Said they'd come out the next day; they didn't, but that's not their fault - we had some big rains for about three days. When they did finally come out, the job they did was fine, but they were a bit messy (I left a check in an envelope taped to the back door. They took the check, but threw the envelope in the yard. They also left a lot of sawdust in the yard and on a bench.) I am not sure that the guy that quotes is the guy who is on site, because I thought I was pretty clear about which branch to take out. They did take out that branch, but also a couple of others. As it turns out, I'm okay with the extra branches that they took out, but if I were super picky, it would have bothered me. My recommendation is that if you are having a lot of work done, have them mark branches prior to cutting. On the plus side, they were quite efficient, and even noticed that we had a small fire pit in the backyard, leaving us some cut up pieces for the pit. The really nice thing about that is: A) they did not just leave the entire branch cut up that would take me years to burn, B) the size that they cut was the perfect size for the fire pit, and C) I didn't even ask them to do this. Just used these guys for the second time. I just trust them. They are on time, they do GREAT work. So rare for workers to show up on time and get things done quickly, but these guys do. Super cool. I even asked them to move some extra things around that was not bidded out, and the guys helped in a minute. I would not even get a second bid in the future, I would just use these guys. And that rarely if ever happens to me. Highly recommend. When I called a few stump removers and they heard these guys did the tree removal, they knew that they were dealing with stumps that were easy to remove. UPDATE: I went ahead and trimmed what I could that following weekend and then they emailed a week after they came out originally saying they would come back out to finish what they said on the estimate. I had already done some of it of course since they didn't mention they would come back out. They did cut 2 big limbs and finish cutting out some dead wood. So I'm pleased. I just wish they had told me they were going to come back out so I didn't need to do some of it myself. ORIGINAL: A young nice guy came out for a quote a it was higher than the quote I got from another copy, but he said they would match the price and I had heard really good things about Sid Mourning's work. He said it could get done in a half day (you pay for either half or full day) and I didn't know how big a crew would be working, so I took him at his word they could get it all done. They did a pretty good job on what they did do, but you can tell they ran out of time! The 5 small trees along the fence line weren't touched, the seedlings that he said they could get rid of are still in the ground, the growths at the ends of some old cut limbs are still growing, there is still some dead wood that could have been cleared out, several limbs he said they would remove are still there, the bushes they would trim are not trimmed. I emailed to let Sid Mourning know and they replied saying that ran out of time. I get that, but still a little annoyed that $600 later all these things I thought would be done when talked about in the quote were not done. The other company was going to do the same work for $600 no matter how long it takes. Had I known the quote would be off by so much I would have gone with the other company. read more

As a real estate developer and builder I've used many tree companies then had Mourning do one job. I've never used anyone else since. The office manager Tracy communicates well and even emails liability insurance certificates specific to the job. The field crews show up on time and work non-stop until the job is finished. Gilbert and Sid are serious professionals. If these guys are available when you need them then you can stop looking. Their pricing is very reasonable. So, I was really nervous because of the extreme mixed reviews online, but we suddenly had a giant limb about to fall on the fence and had to get someone out fast. They came out the same day for an estimate and rearranged their schedule to put us first the next morning because of the falling limb, which we appreciated. I talked to 3 references on the phone and they said good things. Because it seemed cost effective and our other trees needed trimming anyway, we went ahead and hired them for a complete, full-day service. I'm no tree expert by any means, but they just finished up and the trees look really good, plus we have much more sunlight reaching our garden. The crew was very nice and they showed up on time (which earns big points in my book). They worked efficiently and diligently for about 5.5 hours and in that time they completely overhauled two enormous ash trees (on one they had to remove about half the tree that was falling over), trimmed a few large branches from two oaks and a crepe myrtle, and did a nice cleanup of six extremely tall elms (we're talking TALL). I was very specific that I didn't want them to do too much to the elms b/c we wanted some shade. They did exactly what I asked for and did a great job of cleaning up the site. My only complaint is that they were a little rough on the landscaping below. Some of the plants and shrubs got knocked and flattened with falling branches. Maybe this sort of thing is unavoidable, but I don't know. Also, when they handed me the bill the amount was more than the estimate, but they immediately acknowledged and fixed it. As far as the price for the work, it seems average/like the going rate (which was fine with us because last time we hired someone really inexpensive and it was a terrible experience). Very disappointed. When Robert, the arborist, arrived, he told me that their minimum charge was $375 and that I certainly didn't have anything near that amount of work to be done since I only had 2 small trees and didn't require an entire crew to come out. The office had not mentioned this charge to me on the phone, and had I known, I never would have made the appointment and so wasted an afternoon. Fortunately, there was no charge for his coming out for the consultation. He was a very nice fellow and did say that he would come back the next day to inject one tree that he diagnosed for a $10 charge, but I still needed another company to come out and do trimming and diagnose the other tree. He gave me the name of an arborist he recommends, but it turns out that arborist only consults and doesn't do any actual labor. I just checked the tree that he was supposed to have injected yesterday and saw that he hadn't done it. Called the office and was told Robert was swamped yesterday and couldn't squeeze it in. It would have been nice if I had been informed of that. read more

I haven't worked with other arborists, but Sid and his team definitely had their service organized and professional. I first had an estimate with Mr. Mourning himself--which was free--it was a good price compared to another estimate I had received. I also was able to use a Yelp coupon at the time and they were good about price matching other tree services. They definitely want your business and are friendly, and I like the fact that they are so trusted and are recognized by the city as a top performing company. The crew showed up when I had scheduled and they were very fast at getting the job done: much like a team of ninjas. I would ask them to do things and next thing you knew they were done. A very pleasant experience and something that only a team of six or more could do for the type of job that I had (a huge pecan tree needed to be pruned. Sid told me some good advice: tree pruning companies don't have much businesses at the end of the year, so the price is half that of say, January: when their phone lines are constantly busy. I definitely got a better deal because I was looking where other people weren't and there was not much competition to be had. I would recommend getting your trees pruned at this time of year if you can, because it is the same job and it is easier to get on the schedule and less costly. First of all, Tracy is fantastic! She was very pleasant and helpful when I first called to schedule our free estimate. She was very knowledgeable and was patient with all my questions. When Sid came for the estimate, he told us it would take his crews a whole day to complete the work we were requesting (removal of a significant amount of brush, a large cedar tree, and trimming of all 10 trees). The quote he gave us was almost half of the other companies we contacted. We were hesitant at first, but figured they would at least get the cedar removed and trees trimmed, so we scheduled the crew. We were pleasantly surprised to see the crew of 4 men about 20 minutes earlier than scheduled. Let me tell you, these guys know what they are doing! When they were removing the huge cedar, I thought without a doubt tree limbs were going to crash down on our fence or neighbors home, but not even close! It started pouring down rain and these guys just kept on working. They were soaked and still scaling a tree with ease. I was amazed! Our yard looks so much cleaner and larger now. Huge tree fell on my driveway; couldn't back my Jeep out of the garage. Saw all the five star reviews; gave them a call. Sid said he would be by at 11AM that morning. 11AM sharp, he pulls up. Says he can have a crew out here at 9:30 the next morning. 9:30 the next morning, crew shows up. They took care of the tree, and a bunch of other trimming that was needed on my property. Another company had already come out and given a quote that far exceeded Sid's price for taking down one diseased sycamore. While he was out, he quoted me an additional $25 to trim up other trees and prune my bushes. His crew came out the next morning and got to work on the trees. I would give 10 stars if I could. I have many trees on my lot so I've used a lot of tree services over the years. This was such a great experience. To begin with the gentleman who came out to give the estimate was so pleasant and polite. He was truly trying to be helpful instead of just sell a service. I really appreciated him. Secondly, the crew was outstanding! Everyone seemed happy (except the man who stepped in my dog's leavings and even he was pleasant about it). They all worked together and there didn't seem to be any of the I'm the boss, I won't work attitude that I have seen with other crews. I was not only appreciative that they did exactly what I asked them to do in the way I asked them to do it, but they were scrupulous about cleaning up afterwards. The trailer was there for perhaps 30 minutes after the crew left. It was a great experience. I'm definitely going to call when it's time to trim my giant fig trees and when the last standing hackberry has to go. I should also mention that I had storm damage and the tree fell in my neighbor's yard so I was very anxious to get it cleaned up. Sid himself came out to bid a Chinaberry tree removal and pruning our hackberry out of the street. He gave an expedient and fair quote, and we felt way more comfortable dealing with GMTC than random dude in a truck with a chainsaw, seeing his professionalism and knowing his crew was insured. We immediately scheduled a crew visit. The crew moved faster than Sid, no small task. We barely had time for mid afternoon coffee before the pruning was done, and our Chinaberry was cut to the ground and loaded on their truck. They were extremely efficient with the chainsaw, making a few cuts to create logs I couldn't believe they could move. Despite having just planted some flowers and shrubs in the area of the Chinaberry--we couldn't have put them more in the way if we'd tried, not one was injured. When they left, it was as if neither the crew nor the Chinaberry had ever been there. read more

Tracy came out on a Friday afternoon, gave me a consult and estimate. I was put on the books for Tuesday. The crew showed up exactly when they were supposed to, which seems to be rare in my experiences with home services. They did an awesome job clearing out our trees and trimming branches that were over our pergola. We have 10 trees in our backyard and they did it at a very reasonable price. The crew cleaned up nicely and were in and out in about an hour. Robert came out the next day and treated some trees for Cottonwood Borers. I was invoiced exactly what I was quoted with the tree trimming and even came out a little under what I was quoted for the injections.
