It used to be the Black Crow for the old-school Jamaica Plain residence that remember. It's an entirely different vibe with the same great Jamaica Plain neighborhood feel if you haven't tried their burger it's worth the trip from anywhere in the city. Stopped in here for a quick bite to eat after a doctor's appointment. The menu is small and a bit lit limited if you don't want Scottish food. We both got the burger and they were SO good. This is a casual place with good outdoor seating. My husband got the "brunch" burger and thought it was good but overcooked and the potato wedges were soggy. I got the bridies which is a really good vegetarian puff pastry filled with caramelized onion, cheddar, and mashed potato that comes with a little side of lettuces. I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place! I really thought that I did... Basically all you need to know is this: BRUNCH. GO. If you want the full version, read on... I've lost count of how many times I've been here for brunch with b. We went here for dinner once; while the ambiance at night is cool for drinks and hanging out, dinner was rather forgettable. We've only been back for brunch since then because the first brunch experience was one of the best we've had in Boston. While recent visits have been a little shaky (change in the kitchen?), we can usually depend on this place for something delicious to fill our tummies. They have a pretty small brunch menu but all you really need to get is this: 1. Share a Scotch Egg. Or not and just get your own. It's a hardboiled egg wrapped in crispy sausage! What more could you want? The mustard that it's served with is like strong-wasabi-up-your-nose-hot. I hate the feeling but I go back for more. (Is this what addiction is like?) 2. Smoked Fish Cakes. It's like an eggs benedict but with smoked haddock and potato cakes instead of English muffins. And it's served with a brightly colored cherry pepper hollandaise sauce, which is lighter than the usual hollandaise. 3. Toffee French Toast. A thick brioche bread with toffee sauce (YUM!), blueberries, and maple whipped cream. We swore that the size and thickness of the french toast was increasing every time we ordered it. It was getting monstrous! But when we got it this past Saturday, it had shrunk down to a more manageable (but still very filling) size. One of my favorite french toasts among the ones I have tried in brunches around Boston. Service is usually pretty prompt and friendly. There was one guy who served us a couple of times before (seemed to be a manager or some sort?), who was courteous but never smiled. The owner, however, is super friendly and wears a kilt! There's interesting décor to check out on the walls, the blue classroom chairs are odd, they serve complimentary homemade oatcakes with butter, and just make sure you get in for brunch before 2:30 PM on the weekends. Bellhaven was calling me after a long day. Smooth ale is my new flavor. The place was packed as it should be and I squeezed through to the bar to get my Bellhaven. Jason is always so cheerful and quick. We relaxed around the bar as we waited for our table. Tried to say hey to Ben but he was busy in the kitchen so I didn't disturb him. The Scottish eggs are a delight. With each bite the crust has an awesome crunch that shouts out at me...ooo la la. The mussels were full of flavor and also had a hidden crunch with every spoonful. And spoonful I mean I also enjoyed the rich broth they were served in. Ended with the fried Mars bar with whipped cream. I think I would have liked it more if they were bite sized but it was still yummy with the salt and sugar mix blended with the chocolatey goo. read more

The Haven was a great experience. The staff is warm and welcoming. The decor, though still evolving, is Scottish... rough wood, antlers and lots of Scottish kitsch. This is what we had... They start you off with oat cakes and butter which are a fun alternative to bread. Starters: Bridie - a dense pastry with savory filling. Haggis and neeps - The haggis is the best I've had. If you've never tried it, try it here and find out just how bad a rap haggis gets. The neeps or turnips were sautéed with a splash of vinegar which complimented the lamb in the haggis perfectly. Mains Stout battered fish supper, thick-cut chips, house made ketchup and minted mushy peas The fish was great. There amount of fries was just right. The house made ketchup was so good you can eat it with a spoon and not feel one bit guilty. The minted mushy peas were fantastic. It was almost like eating guacamole without, you know, eating avocados straight. Afters Raspberry tart - Buttery crust - tart, creamy filling, red raspberries and a dollop of stiff whipped cream. Why no Mr. Bond I expect you to......dine! Yep there's a photo of ol' Sean at the Haven as you might expect to find in Boston's only true Scottish restaurant, the place is decorated simply giving it a nice Scottish atmosphere and authentic charm, if you been to Scotland you will get the feeling that you are back in Caledonia for a brief visit, we certainly did. We both enjoyed the FULL Scottish breakfast - fried egg, black pudding, THICK cut bacon strips, sausage, home fries, fried tomato, oat cakes. Ok I stole her black pudding and oat cakes with my "Hey is that Billy Connolly?" routine. The lass falls for it every time. I can't believe it but it was the first time either of us have had oat cakes (both coming from Scots parents), something so basic can be so tasty, must be the fresh ingredients. After downing a pot of coffee or so we headed down Centre Street for a walk around Arnold Arboretum, then after working off breakfast there we returned for "a pint", we ended up killing the afternoon at the bar with a Belhaven or two, the lass enjoyed the Harpoon Cider, and I sampled a mixture of the Cider & their Belgium Ale - not bad on a hot & humid Sunday afternoon in Boston. Great banter with the barkeep and the growing number of regulars. Folks should know they now accept credit cards. I'm basing my five stars on sincerely feeling like we had returned to the B & B we stayed at in Fife a couple years back (though a lot cheaper). read more

Brunch, lunch or dinner! I've visited The Haven 3 times since coming for brunch in June and I've enjoyed every meal. It's a quaint Scottish pub with a warm welcome and friendly vibe. Definitely make reservations as they get booked up, but we have walked in on weekday lunches and it's fine. I've even brought a client here and he raved about the lunch and has brought people there too. I love the food! From the cheese boards, burgers, the amazing BLT...it's all good. Something for everyone...salads, quiche at brunch, then the Scottish fare - scotch eggs, shepherds pie, fish and chips...I'm not a haggis person but have been told it's good! And don't skip dessert! "This is British comfort food" as she pointed at the broiled cow testicles on her plate. At least that is how I describe what actually was the "Haggis and neeps" my Scottish friend ordered. She said Americans feel better when you simply tell them that Haggis isn't a far cry from sausage... but I tasted nothing sausagey about it. I think my palate detected liver..... but since she loved it, I'll have to take her word that it is the real McCoy. Authentic British food.... and a dish I'll never try again. But, I did enjoy the coronation chicken sandwich (curried chicken), which I haven't had in a quite a few years, and is something I do know a bit about. They could have put in a few more raisins into the mix, but it was still good. Loved the chips (British for 'fries') that came with it, and was a decent meal. What I really like about The Haven is that it has a really nice feel about it. An easy-going crowd, where everyone seemed to just fit. Everyone seemed to be respectful, and more importantly, comfortable. I fed right off this aura and very quickly assimilated into cruise control, enjoying my lime cordial. I was tempted to try the deep-fried Mars bar, but I'm in the middle of dropping pound #15 as part of my 30-day-drop-20-pound goal.... which means no sugar for anything after breakfast. Our Sunday brunch was a great and unique experience this morning -- a group of 7.5 seated late, at 1:30 with no fuss. Oatcakes and butter were waiting, and coctails arrived quickly. The food was notably well-crafted, exceeding several diner's expectations -- Hollandaise was exceptional according to several people who should know. The Scotch breakfast had a wee bit of everything -- tasty baked beans, blood sausage, home cured bacon, tatty scones, eggs, and sausage. The French toast was a towering but not too sweet plateful. Came to this hip gastropub in JP and I am pleasantly satisfied with my experience there. My friend and I walked in on a Monday evening and we were immediately seated. The ambiance feels very homey and makes you comfortable while you. Run down on the food: -Deviled eggs: never quite had eggs like it before, but it was the perfect balance of flavor and didn't taste too eggy. -Haven burger: perfectly cooked and it was so juicy it was running through my fingers. I would definitely recommend it even though burgers can be generic at pubs. -Lamb shank: little tougher and not as tender as I've had at other places so I would give it a 2.5-3 stars on its own Overall, great experience and I will definitely be back to try their brunch (which looks amazing by the way). read more

We visited The Haven with a large group for a birthday celebration with maybe low expectations. And, we were blown away by everything. All the apps, the mains, the salad, the dessert. And, of course, the cocktails, whiskey, and the expertise and friendliness of the servers. The pickiest foodies in our group loved it, too! It's hard to pick a standout, but Shepherd's Pie was highly elevated comfort food, Scotch egg is more than the sum of its parts, and the sticky toffee pudding is fantastic. I've eaten at the Haven 4-5 times over the last 3 years. Just had brunch and was really disappointed with their Loch Ness bagel because there was a minuscule amount of salmon given. We're talking 4 small bites of salmon for $13. Also, they could offer more than one type of bagel to choose from, but they don't. The black tea is just ok. Some more British tea options would do them good. I might be back for the French toast but won't waste my money on the other dishes. Hopefully they step up their game or update their menu soon. read more

I've been here for brunch and dinner on a few occasions. I'm always happy with the food and the atmosphere is great. There is an eclectic selection of beers. The food is really hearty and you will definitely find something unique on the menu. I especially love the Scotch Egg, Burger and the pickled vegetables and bread you get before your meal. So disappointed ! I was so eager to see what the hype was all about and came with a very open mind. Started with the scotch eggs - disappointment began there. One egg for $10 ? One could have argued that it's wrapped in sausage except ours seem to have been wrapped in what was left on someone's hands after working on sausage. The thinnest and crustiest sausage wrapping on the smallest egg in the basket. Then the main meal sealed the disappointment for us. The steak was pitiful. Don't be fooled by the size of the slices in the pictures. Our plate had slivers of meat not slices. The salmon - meh. For $30 it was insulting. The banh-mi is an excuse to serve the bread. Hints of meat to pass it off as a "special". $150 later we're still hungry and almost cried with disappointment. It's not the cost though. It just wasn't worth it. Yes the pandemic was tough but the quality/taste of the food also just didn't cut it. So sad but we're not coming back here again. read more

The new location is great but I think the food isn't as good as it used to be when it was at the old Perkins address. Service was slow although most people there were gathered around the bar...I had the burger, which is a bit soggy (fell apart pretty easily) and less flavorful than I remembered. I like the fries though! We also shared the crème brûlée, which has got to be the tiniest crème brûlée ever for the price. read more

What a hidden gem! Came here for a Sunday brunch and had a great experience. Right when entering the restaurant, we could immediately notice the Scottish ambience from pictures and posters hanging on the wall. The restaurant was pretty small with a mini bar tucked inside, which gave a homey atmosphere to it. For food, I'd definitely recommend getting the Scotch Egg. 1) it's the staple, and 2) crispy sausage wrapped on a boiled egg is a tasty idea. To satiate sweet tooth in your party, I'd recommend getting the Toffee French Toast. Note: a plate is shareable for 2-3 people. Finally, the Smoked Fish Cake was another great dish to try. It's like a twist of an egg Benedict (thanks to the hollandaise sauce) on a fish and potato pancake. Great service on top of it as well! I had just the best time here, from first greeting to our last steps out the door. EVERYONE was welcoming, knowledgable about the menu in detail, and enjoyable to engage with. That makes a huge difference when you are with a large group, which we were, for brunch! Diana was our server, and we also met Pete (bar) and Jason (owner). Wonderful hospitality is my jam. Food: we went for Sunday brunch and it was delicious, special, and beautifully put together. I got the Lox Ness Bagel plate and it rocked my socks off, right down to the orange zest on the plate, which was such a different and yummy addition. The team was attentive, we never went without proactive coffee or water refills, and we left happy after spending a relaxing time with friends. I highly recommend The Haven! Actually good food and nice folk. - haggis was nice and chicken dish was well cooked. My major and singular complaint was the side window bench tables were not deep cleaning. Only wiped. I suspect this has been the case for a long time. Now they need stripping and re-finishing. It was sticky via many many months / year? of "stuff". I guess floor was a little sticky too. Still feeling the sadness from the loss of Zon's in JP (and I know it's been awhile, but that lamb burger makes me wince with pleasure every time I think about it) I was ready to discount The Haven before it even moved in. But then I remembered one thing; Scottish Beer. So I went during their first week open and I have to say, it made the passing of Zon's almost bearable. But I still crave that damn lamb burger! Anyways, back to The Haven. The decor is great, as others have said, and I can imagine bellying up to the bar for many hours drinking scotch ale and talking about kilts. I thought the schoolroom chairs were only temporary and they were still waiting for some of their furnishings, but it seems as though those hard cold chairs are sticking around. Small price to pay for the rest of what is offered at The Haven. The staff is amazing. We were welcomed with open arms, and even though the place was in its first week, they made it seem as though they'd been open for years and that we were neighborhood regulars and they had been expecting us all along. When the bartender accidentally forgot about us and left us with empty pint glasses for a bit too long, the owner, Jason, noticed and immediately rectified the situation, apologizing for the delay and offering to buy us our next round. We were flattered. My friend and I ordered the BIG SASSITCH (which is now the other sassitch) and it was amazing. The sausage itself was delicious, perfect for two people and delicately coiled on top of the best mashed potatoes I've ever had, and I'm from Idaho, so I knows my potatoes, people. The plate also had some bbq spring onions which were almost better than the potatoes were. But probably the best part about the meal was the mustard gravy...and we ate every last bit of it. I haven't been back yet...but after reading the rest of the reviews, and listening to my other JP friends talk about their experiences, I can't wait to go back -- and am a little upset with myself for being so lazy about it. The Haven is definitely a huge benefit for JP -- and for Boston dining. Love The Haven. I don't know Scottish from the rest of the UK, but this is Good Stuff. The first time I went I had a Scotch Egg and then the Fish and Chips. So. Good. My friend had the deep fried Mars Bar which I didn't know was Scottish, but was amazing nonetheless. Thank heavens he ate the majority while his wife and I had 2 bites (or so) each. The food quantity is too much! I've gone since and thoroughly enjoyed the quackling salad and a burger, both meals in and of themselves. So much so I didn't finish as much as my taste buds wanted me to. the burger was a juicy delicious mess suitable for fork and knife, so be ready! Christmas Eve my family (some in from Colorado) enjoyed the prix fixe menu and the beef and ale pie was over the top. One cousin had the haggis (she claimed her Scotch heritage required her to order it, she's a cousin by marriage) and I dared a bite. I have to admit it was good! Shocking! Recently had a lovely visit with my wife to The Haven, and had the Fisherman's Pie. I found it amazing. I hadn't had it before. Flavorful, perfectly cooked, and satiating. Really, really good. During the meal, two of my favorite bands played. The Super Furry Animals, and Beta Band. I swear a couple of years ago i told Jason that i love SFA, and so one of 2 things happened 1.) he has an amazing memory and somehow threw some of those tracks on to delight a customer, and/or 2.) The place just plays great music anyway. But I can just choose to think Jason's that good - why not :) read more

Came back twice b/c my friends keep raving about their brunch (and its winter, so no concerns about the A/C) and its burger. While I was not surprised that lunch was pretty sparsely populated, I was shocked that on a Sat at 11, it was almost empty, I figured it was either b/c 1) the food sucks or 2) nobody knows that they serve brunch, and the answer is #2. Their breakfast sandwich was HUGE on a nice brioche, thick sausage on a potato thing of some sort with cheese, really well balanced. Heavy, but not greasy. The accompanying beans were delicious. I split a scotch egg, which was decent, nothing that rocked my world, but crisp and nicely balanced by a well seasoned bed of arugula. Their burger is pretty good, quite juicy, great onions and sauce on a nice brioche, definitely one of the better ones in Boston. For $15/person after tax/tip? WOW. I'm kinda glad that lunch and brunch are not yet so popular b/c I love having no wait, no competition for our server's attention, and getting our food quickly. Is this place under new management? I have fond memories of The Haven, having lived in JP circa 2012-2016. It was literally impossible to find a bad dish on the menu- every thing was stellar. I was so happy to find myself in JP with the opportunity to return. I'm disappointed to say, that this place is not what it once was and I'm not sure what happened. The oat cakes are no longer complimentary, for one, and are not as fresh and tender as they once were. The scotch eggs were good, and were more or less what I remembered, but very overpriced at $10. The White Pudding I ordered, as well as the Shepherd's Pie my boyfriend ordered were obviously prepped in advance and warmed up. The Sausage in the White Pudding was cold, while the mashed potatoes were dry and boiling hot. The Shepherd's pie was warm throughout but very under seasoned. Our meal with drinks came to over $80 which was incredibly over priced, all considered. It gives me no pleasure to say this- I have really enjoyed coming to this place in the past! They had, absolutely, the best burger in town and it was always a great atmosphere. I don't see the same people around- which makes me think new owners have taken over and are trying to cut corners.
