I've gone here twice and loved my meals and the service! They seem to have very creative foods and fresh ingredients. I got some type of spinach pesto with bright rainbow cherry tomatoes and it was delciious. Seemed like the pasta was house made and it was excellent. Pretty pricey so I havne't gone back many times but when I did go it was enjoyable! Only con about ambiance was that their outdoor seating on the sidewalk is at a slant and they don't have anything to even it out so it kinda feels like you're tilting over the whole time. read more

The Abbey is a fun neighborhood hang with a pretty extensive menu featuring interesting takes on your typical bar food. We sat at the tiny bar area facing the open kitchen and it was cool to see the food being prepared, though my clothes and hair reeked afterwards. It also got super loud - next time, once it's cooler outside, I'd opt for a sidewalk table instead. We ordered a bunch of things to try. My favorite was the mushroom and potato croquettes (unbelievable), then the chicken wings and the deviled eggs (the latter is a crowd favorite, I saw plate after plate of these carted out). We also went with the roasted cod as a main. The fish was cooked beautifully tender but missing flavor or salt, which, if you know me, takes a lot to say. The best part of the dish was the scallion pancake sitting under the cod as a rich, textured vehicle for soaking up all the sauce. The only thing I wouldn't order again was the beet carpaccio. Way too heavy on the balsamic vinegar, the salad was essentially inedible. Every single bite made my mouth pucker. I usually love any kind of veggie or salad dish and end up fishing them without any issues but couldn't muster asking for a to-go box for the beets. I'm always worried ordering at a new venue since medium to well is a bit of a risk. I ordered medium-well and it came out VERY well. Nice decor. Decent service. We went for lunch and had two paninis: the Italian muffalata and the roasted turkey with fresh mozzarella. Both were excellent. The former is a nice variation on the traditional New Orleans muffalata. It was loaded with meat: capicola, Genoa salami, pepperoni and mortadella, and topped with melted provolone, Giardiniera relish and creamy Dijon sauce. The second was layered with tender roast turkey and mozzarella that was indeed fresh, and melted the way cheese should be on a grilled sandwich. The panini bread itself was amazing. I think that comes down to several things: high quality, fresh Italian bread, great oil and butter and an excellent panini press. It was so crispy on the outside that you could hear it crunch as you bit into it, but wasn't hard or chewy once you got past the crust. Sandwich bread does not get any better than this. The hand-cut fries were a bit of a disappointment though. They were warm when the food arrived, but they were still pretty limp when they should have been crispy or at least been firmer. If the fries and the service were better, this would have merited 5 stars based on the paninis. As it is, I'd rate it a 4 to 4.5. read more

Located right on Beacon Street in Brookline makes it very easy to walk to, take the bus, train, or park at a street meter. The inside is small but cozy. Not too big, but not too small either. The space seems like it could be fun at night to grab a drink here with some friends. I definitely want to check it again out at dinner and also after dinnertime. I came for lunch and got the Thanksgiving Panini and there was definitely crunch in every bite, but it was a little messy to eat. It comes with thick slices of turkey, topped with cranberry, stuffing, melted cheese, and arugula. It felt more like turkey and stuffing with cheese. I wasn't getting the full Thanksgiving effect in every bite. The fries were good, but nothing special. If you're into thin stringy fries then this is your place. The menu itself is pretty adventurous so it's worth mentioning that the options lean more towards an acquired taste when you come here. read more

We were 4 people, for a birthday celebration. Meanwhile 2 sets of two people come in after us and both pairs are seated. Offered a tiny 3 person table with no possibility of a fourth fitting. We wait another 10 minutes, finish our drinks, pay. Still no movement to pay nor leave from the ladies at the table we were told we soon be our table. I've known about this place my whole life, but decided to give it a try for the first time last weekend. We walked inside, and I instantly was hit with a semi-odd smell. It wasn't bad per se, but prevalent. It smelled a bit smokey as in smoked meat/cheese. We were seated right away. The restaurant is quite small, with a few tables and bar, but plentiful in outdoor seating. We started with water, which tasted good. Then my mom ordered a salmon salad, which she said was very tasty and fresh. The fish was also not very fishy (haha) which was a good sign. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich, it was so so. The chicken was flavorful and juicy, but it was an interesting combination with the smoked Gouda, not one I'd choose again. I feel like the Gouda overpowered the rest of the sandwich. It would have been tastier with a more neutral cheese like Swiss or Pepper Jack, as well as some avocado which I believe used to come on the sandwich but was a removed topping as of late. I also wasn't a huge fan of the sesame bun, and it was kind of burnt on my sandwich. I think this sandwich has a lot of potential, but it didn't really hit my fancy. The fries however, were absolutely delicious. Especially with the truffle & garlic mayo combo. Mmmm! Additionally, while the service was good, I had a bit of an upset stomach eating here. I think the smokiness of the sandwich, and the cheese, was a bit hard to digest. I read a previous review that said the same about this sandwich. I went here late night after Red Sox game, it was pretty full so seems like people go there a lot. This is a regular Tuesday night, there's outdoor seating inside seating. It was a beautiful night so I sat outside, but the inside is beautiful the Ambiance is so nice. It's a great place to just go have a late night drink or meet up with some friends. They got a good decent menu, I got muscles which they altered for me they put it in garlic sauce instead of the red curry sauce, I also got this Big Mac egg roll, it was okay it didn't have the flavors that I expected it to. Also there's a shredded brussels sprouts which is kind of weird, but I wanted to try it anyways that also didn't have the same flavors I was kind of expecting. It was a little bit Bland I thought it was going to be like when you eat roasted brussel sprouts and they're kind of like candied. All in all it was a good experience, I didn't get the service name which I regret but he was wonderful. read more

(However, a side note is that the vent hoods definitely need a good scrubbing.) The food is good and has interesting flavors and the beer selection is OK. It has been a while since I last visited. Today disappointed. First, in my opinion if you serve hamburgers, you should have the condiments that customers like to use. Some of us like Dijon style mustard-not yellow. They don't have Dijon so I ordered the fish and chips. Well that was a mistake. This is such a cute cozy spot! It's small but not crammed and the space has a lot of charm to it. It also smells delicious inside! The food was good, but didn't really live up to my expectations. I was excited to try the bison bolognese after reading the rave reviews, but the bison flavor wasn't very present and the sauce was more carroty than tomato-y red. The balsamic drizzle was an interesting (yet welcome) touch, but I wouldn't say the dish was worth $27. I so badly wanted the thanksgiving panini to be well rounded in flavor, but it really lacked. It could have used a LOT more cranberry and arugula, and the turkey was a bit bland. I will say the crunch factor was great and they were generous with the amount of meat, but again, there wasn't enough going on. The truffle fries were fine, a bit too thin for my liking. Honestly this place was great. Went for a late dinner with friends. Had to wait about 20mins before being sat but given how busy everything else was that is really good. We tried a plethora of options including the deviled eggs, fries, croquets, a couple burgers, and two salads. The menu changes somewhat regularly so check online for the most up to date options. Really good vibes in this Brookline Mainstay the dishes all popped with flavor and the Charring was sublime. The sauces and dips were expertly made and the food was cooked to perfection. I loved everything about this place the service was the best shout out to Julie (our server) she is the bomb. Steak frittes chared and juicy with a madeira sauce the wings were plump but cooked perfectly with an awesome sauce combination and the mussels were excellent tasted really clean not muddy with a a great garlic butter and wine sauce. This review is for the Brookline location of The Abbey. The Abbey doesn't do reservations or call ahead. We showed up around 6:00ish on a Saturday night and were told there was a 20 - 30 minute wait. We were welcome to sit at the bar, but there was no place for four people to sit together, so we lurked near the door and chatted, ducked customers walking in and out and staff taking orders, running food and clearing plates. It's a small space when all the tables are full and people are a few deep at the bar, but that just added to the ambiance. I was seated facing the wall so I didn't see quite how busy it got, but the noise was at "lively" level. We could still have a conversation but needed to speak up to be heard across the table. We were able to snag a table after about 30 minutes. The basics first: The drinks, food and service were fantastic! This is our second time here, the first being ages ago when they had the covered tables outside early in the pandemic. I've been wanting to come back forever, but don't usually get to this part of Brookline. I need to change that or head to Cambridge too! I started with a winter sangria (red wine, brandy, spiced rum, apricot and allspice) that was delicious. They have a pretty extensive gluten free menu, which is nice. My friend wanted the GF pasta Bolognese, but she is dairy free to so that was not an option. We ordered two of the slow-braised short rib "French dip" egg rolls with gruyere, horseradish aioli, and red wine demi for the table. Loved this! I never finish apps and I inhaled this. I was fine with that, I could just put my main in a take home container. We also got the black kale & Brussels sprouts salad, avocado, pepitas, Crispy bacon, and a fried duck egg. Even if you think you don't like kale and or Brussels sprouts, get this dish! I got the "Thanksgiving" panini (house roasted turkey, cornbread stuffing, cheddar, arugula, cranberry aioli, hand-cut fries). It was delicious and can't wait for the leftovers. The hanger steak frites came topped with watercress and a madeira sauce. It was the most tender steak that I've ever had. For sides my friends also ordered shredded Brussels sprouts and pan roasted cauliflower with capers and pecorino as sides. Not to be missed are the hand cut fries that are the embodiment of French fries perfection. They are a must order, either plain or with truffles and cheese. Fried potato nirvana! As I said, the place was packed, but service was attentive and Ty (sp?), our server made sure allergy info was provided to the kitchen. He made great suggestions for items to try. The Brookline location does not serve dessert (sad panda) but the Cambridge location does. Good to note for next time! Did I mention that the kitchen is open until 1:30 AM every night? My husband and I order from here often and when we do, we either both get the grilled chicken sandwich, which is delicious (I love the toasted brioche and the bacon). Or he gets the pressed Italian (his favorite) and I get the tomato soup. Sometimes with grilled cheese. Sometimes just grilled bread. I don't have a stomach (not an expression. It's cancer's fault) so the grilled cheese is delicious but a bit much. The soup though is delicious. Has a great kick to it. It survives my walk home. Went here with a few coworkers after working at the hospital this past Sunday night. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much. I had had a pretty shitty day at work, so my my expectations were very low. However, I had such a fantastic experience here. Not only was the food ACTUALLY really yummy, the service was impeccable!!! We sat at the bar, so I'm not sure if that made a difference ... but it was great. The staff was friendly and attentive. No cup left empty ... unless by choice. My friends and I came on Friday night at about 6pm and were able to get seated outdoors immediately. We ordered the shishito peppers, chicken wings with ranch, steamed mussels, truffle fries, rangoons, and gnocchi. The mussels were overcooked as they shrunk in size and tasted tougher than they should. It was honestly lacking flavor too. I did enjoy the bread that came with it though, but I am just biased to bread. The chicken wings were alright; they were relatively juicy, but overwhelming with sauce draped all over it. The rangoons were yummy, but the portions are way too small for what you are paying for. The truffle fries were too thin for my liking and overly fried. They were so hard that when you stab them with a fork, the inside is completely hollow and dry. The truffle taste being prominent was probably the only redeeming factor. The gnocchi were the best thing we ordered from here. I would've gobbled up this entire dish on my own if we were not doing family style. It had the perfect amount of flavor and texture, and I enjoyed every part of it including the cherry tomatoes, peas, etc. I also enjoyed their drinks. Unfortunately, they were out of the drink of the day, so I ordered something else off their cocktail menu. Overall, the portions are way too small at this restaurant for me to end up leaving full, but I would recommend coming here for small bites and the drinks. The cocktails made up for the night as I did greatly enjoy both the taste and appearance. It is nice that they rotate their menu every now and then to keep things fresh. read more
