A no-brainer if you find yourself in Jamaica Plain, and a great reason to get yourself to JP as soon as possible. Genuinely friendly service, above-average pub classics, a very nice beer selection, and enough Scottish touches (veggie bridies: just get them) to make you feel like you're on vacation without being kitschy. My friend got some lovely but innocuous salmon, while my flawless fish and chips could easily have fed a family of four. (The mushy peas were minty, and I don't know how I feel about that, but the ketchup is homemade and a source of staff pride.) We were obviously too full for dessert (or "Afters"), but there's a deep-fried Mars Bar why are you still reading this haven't I made myself clear, ya wee numpty? read more

I am telling yah, this is the real deal. Food was incredible and in my opinion it's the only genuine Scottish Restaurant in Boston. This is probably the most authentic Scottish Pub in Boston, and it doesn't disappoint! The fish supper in particular is perfection - crisp and not overly oily outside with super flakey fIsh inside. I thoroughly enjoyed my first meal at the Haven a few nights ago. The sweet potatoes were delightful as was the kale and sausage. The chowder I got wasn't bad either and it all went nicely with the Scottish ale I had. Prices were decent and the service was good, even though it was so full on a week day night.. The atmosphere was nice, intimate, and chill. Jason the owner is a great guy and enthusiastic patron. The caramel pudding cake for desert was a nice touch and they really do offer something very different there with the menu, which is small, but offers some selection (and veggie options too). All in all - a unique place in a good location, good food and drink, and a nice atmosphere. read more

I adore this bar. I may be moving in a week, but I will still make an effort to drink here -- parking be damned! It is just such a wonderful place. A real neighborhood pub. It's cozy, inviting. The cocktail list is longer than I would have expected (and impressively inventive). The beer and scotch offerings are plentiful, but well-curated. And on top of all that, you have delicious food. (Who hasn't found themselves craving a deep fried Mars bar after one too many?) A lot of bars can be all surface with no substance. Not the Haven. I had been wanting to try The Haven for the longest time because it's on Boston's Eater 38 list (currently #37 on the list) and I really wanted to try the Haggis. The atmosphere was hip and divey at the same time and I liked the way the restaurant was styled (it felt cozy, like home). We ordered a round of Scotches to try and I really enjoyed the Ardbeg I ordered because of its complex peaty flavor profile, yum! For food we ordered 3 starters and 3 entrees for 5 people to share, which was plenty. For appetizers we were sure to order the Haggis. For our entrees we ordered the White Pudding Sassitch and Mash, The Haven Burger, and the Shepard's Pie. In my opinion, the best overall dish in terms of flavor was the The Haven Burger. However, since a hamburger isn't Scottish (last time I checked) I would recommend the Shepherds Pie or the Sassitch to anyone dinning here. Several in our party preferred the Sassitch. Last, I would personally advise any friend to pass on the Haggis, it's a novelty that's best left as that, but if they REALLY wanted to try it I would suggest the appetizer sized portion (it kind of tastes like a creamy buttery pate, which may be an "acquired taste"). read more

This was my first time spending time in Jamaica Plain, and I loved both it and this restaurant. I knew I wanted to go here after finding out they sold haggis, and I had never eaten haggis before. I enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, the dark beer they had on tap... I *really* enjoyed the rutabaga mash that came with the haggis as well. My girlfriend enjoyed the vegetarian plate entree she had as well. Only complaint? Portions were a little skimpy, but at a place like this you're paying for the experience. read more

I stopped into this restaurant since I was in town for business and I'd never tried a scotch egg. The newly acquired liquor license and whiskey menu was an excellent bonus. I was greeted by Jason, who is a veritable font of knowledge on all things whiskey related. He selected a variety for me based on the flavor profiles I told him I enjoyed, and it was delicious; the Speyside Linkwood 15 year. It had a bright bloom, and a soft, lingering flavor. The Scottish salmon was my chosen entrée and had a delicious crisp top and bottom layer, was done perfectly, and nicely complemented by a side of sweet potatoes, peapods and barley risotto. The pickled appetizer nibbles were also a nice touch. The scotch egg came on a bed of arugula, and was so good I ordered two more to go as lunches for my business weekend. My boyfriend and I went here because I moved to the area & had been waiting to go there for months. We arrived and it was very busy so we expected a wait. We were told by a charismatic Scottish man it would be around 25 minutes but it could be sooner. This was fine for us and we went and each got a drink, stood and waited. After about 30 minutes of watching several other people being seated before us, I went over to ask the host and who I assume to also be the owner how much longer it would be. He told me "let me see where you are on the list" & proceeded to not say anything to me, so I patiently waited for about 10 more minutes, directly in front of him. When I asked him again if there was an update he told me, "what did I just tell you 5 minutes ago"...well sir, you didn't tell me anything, but thanks for being so incredibly rude. I'm sure it's easy to forget when you're chatting with your chums around you. I understand it was a busy night (I worked in serving for over 5 years) but that is a terrible way to treat two paying customers (spent 20 dollars on drinks) while they patiently waited. read more

Lovely place for a cozy evening and a delicious fish & chip. The "steak cut" french fries are also the best in JP. Great selection of scotch and beer (they have scottish classics, try crabbies ginger beer), super friendly wait-staff, and the perfect atmosphere - somewhere between fancy resturant and cozy local pub. This quaint little place transcends you to Scotland and makes you forget you're in the midst of Jamaica Plain for awhile. The open mic on Wednesday is a great change of pace and I hear they have Jazz on Thursdays as well?! This gem is my new go to. read more

Enjoyed this place thoroughly. The ambience is cozy with many adorable decorations. The service is friendly and attentive. The food is perfectly balanced. I came with a party of two and split a poached pear. It was topped with lemon sorbet and jam. You would think it would be too sweet but it was perfect. Tart and delicious. Great place to enjoy a unique experience! I really enjoyed the corned beef sausage with mash and mustard gravy. Another at our table ordered a glass of warm, mulled spice wine which accommodated the snowy evening. Do you know the feeling of seeing a house built on beachfront that looks like it would be better suited nestled into rolling hills, or into the face of the mountains? Well, that's what The Haven is! Character, intentional thought, and pride are just a few things that separate The Haven from the neighboring alternatives offering a recluse for a foodie's soul and a savage's spirit. The menu is bold and direct, while doing a fabulous job encapsulating the essence of Scottish and western Euro old-world comfort food. The ciders are marvelous, and the gin is crafted inhouse. When my niece suggested a little tavern in her neighborhood with "great Scottish food" as a meeting spot for lunch, I said "isn't that, like, innerds?". She assured me that there were choices beyond haggis so off we went. And we indeed found many choices beyond haggis. A respectable collection of draft and bottled beers, and a well varied menu. I was warmly greeted by the bartender (who also turned out to be the hostess, and our server). I had walked 2+ miles to get there on a warm New England day and she immediately brought me a giant glass of ice water - without my asking and before I was even seated - nice! She invited me to choose my table and didn't seem phased at all when I asked her if I could move about 10 minutes later when I saw one I liked better. I had the BLT - with house smoked bacon, and locally sourced tomatoes and lettuce on batard bread. It was a) delicious and b) enormous. Niece and her boyfriend each had the fish sandwich with fresh, beer-battered haddock - and loved it. All sandwiches are served with hand cut chips or arugula salad. We all chose the latter and enjoyed the balance of the delicate dressing with the peppery arugula. We all left satiated and with half sandwiches wrapped up for later. PS though we did not try them, locals rave about the burgers here. The Haven embraces Scottish heritage with bridies, house made sausage (there's your haggis) and scotch eggs among other things. They have "kilt nights" a few times a month, with music provided by their own piper. I'd love to get back here for brunch one day - when they have fiddlers serenading everyone. The food brought back some memories of childhood and my grandfather's Sunday breakfasts. The service was wonderful. The waiter even anticipated my need for butter for my coffee. My son polished off the French toast in under five minutes. Admittedly, my sister and I sneaked a little bite of his. My sister had the Bubble and Squeak and I had the Full Scotch Breakfast. Haven felt comfortable and welcoming the moment I walked in. It's no wonder my friend Tom H. loves and recommended the place. I found the drink list to be especially welcoming with its wide variety of Scottish beers and cocktails, and its always a plus for a pub when it can coerce me to add new liquors to my boozy shopping list. The food is equally tempting and delicious. Their Scotch Deviled Egg is of most interest to me - this time I merely saw it on someone else's plate; next time one will be on my own plate. I have mixed feelings about this place. On one hand I enjoyed every single time I've been, on the other... It's just so over priced and limited options. The potatoes are amazing, and one of the few vegetarian options. The beers are good but there aren't that many and they're all expensive. They don't have a liquor license so all their cocktails are infused liquor - but they cost as much as a regular cocktail. The staff is very friendly and the decór is nice, too. If you have dinner plans for 7:30 and you don't end up leaving the restaurant until past midnight, chances are you had a good time -- I certainly did at the Haven. Will the Bartender totally confirmed my theory that sitting by the taps is the way to go. We got instant drink gratification, food suggestions and bar banter that we might have missed if we'd been seated at a table. Plus the chance to try some oatcakes (super hearty) and delightfully tart currant mead. The entrees were solid; I got a giant sausage plate (teehee) that was well-balanced and juicy. The chicken tikka masala looked like serious business. Then came the pièce de résistance: deep-fried mars bar! Just as eye-closingly good as I remembered from the Elite event, and I will never leave the Haven without ordering one. For antler chandeliers, a bathroom covered in clan tartans, beer that allegedly tastes like pine trees, cozy conversation by a roaring (fake) fireplace and the chance to attain mouth bliss, please proceed to your nearest Scottish bar/restaurant. Having (almost) breached a one-year window from hosting an Elite event at this place that I LOVE, and a series of subsequent meals/drinking sessions, it's officially time. Jason and Chef Wax have something real. A manly, primal, meat- and fry-laden something that will last as long as they'd like it to. If these guys don't offer a welcome, whether with a warm plate or a warmer handshake, I'll eat my haggis. The bar seats seven, the dining room another 25 or so and the chandelier reach out with antler hands. Hantlers. cHantlerier. My head hurts. Belhaven on tap, or Kelpie in hand, the Scottish brews come out swinging. Keep your hands up, lest you leave with a cavity and/or a mighty fine buzz. Let me order for you: a Scotch egg (one of the area's first, and arguably the best!), a beef and ale pie and the fried Mars bar just to pop that gluttonous stomach of yours. The egg is remarkable, even more so if you're a salt-craving ungulate, while the savory beef and ale pie passes the lips like meaty ambrosia and sits like a fireplace - warm and tiring. I loved every bite. The Mars bar just because you have to; I mean, it's right there. This is mind, don't dare skip the pre-meal oatcake. It's the heartiest insulation you'll ever think you're eating. The crew has fun, the guests are never bitter and soccer is always running cross the wee TV. If The Haven were any more homey, it'd be a Wayans clown. With the prime spot on Perkins St being so central to Hyde Square Circle, I bet they could charge their regulars rent. And I know those folks would pay it. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet as I go pretty often. If I want to bring a date or grab a drink with a friend in JP - and want to take them somewhere unique, this is your place. It is different - a Scottish pub - that has so much charm and atmosphere. The bartender, who i suspect is also the owner, is a lovely Scottish guy who you'll find wearing a kilt. The crowd is usually enjoyable boisterous - sometimes breaking out into song or playing folk music on a guitar or bagpipes if they feel like it. Food: The menu is really small - there are only a few things you can get but I recommend the Burger - which is a big, hearty bacon cheese burger that I struggle to finish due to its size served with thick cut chips and homemade ketchup (they also put out salt and vinegar which is amazing on them too). There are usually a few tables free each night so you don't normally need a reservation but this place is normally near full. Drinks: they serve the Belhaven Ale which is one of the best beers I've tried - a smooth dark but not bitter or hoppy ale that everyone I have taken to this place has enjoyed. Finally, finally! I've been meaning to come here since the Yelp Elite event here, which I missed do to a cold. So glad I did. With four dining companions and a reservation at 8:30 we arrive to a full house. We're told that the dinner party at our table is finishing dessert, so it should be available soon. Unfortunately one of my friends could tell from the looks of one woman at the table with very animated hands, and even more animated mouth, they were definitely not leaving soon. As we wait by the bar, after 20 minutes, Jason, the owner, God bless him, goes over to the table and ask them kindly that another reservation was waiting for the table. Now that's attentive service. On such a cold evening my friends did partake of the mulled wine, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Another had a seaweed ale which he said was quite good. Even with a limited menu in terms of choices, what they had to offer was excellent. The mussels, which we thoroughly soaked every piece of bread we could muster in it's delicious juices. The beef and ale pie, with a flaky crust, containing piping hot stew of braised beef with leeks, potatoes, and carrots. A large portion of fish and chunks of chips. The sassitch and mash, a tasty homemade sausage with garlic and herbs. Finally for dessert truffles of various unique and interesting flavors, my favorite being the coconut and curry. Service was friendly and attentive, and Jason made it a point to have a nice talk with us and remembered my name as I left. Top notch fellow. Of course they offer the traditional haggis, and someday I'll try this. I get the feeling I will be a repeat customer. It was a sad day when Zon's closed. Hyde Square really needed a casual restaurant with hearty food to give the neighborhood some much-needed warmth. With a rent-sharking landlord owning that entire corner on the rotary, there was news of yet-another-Indian-restaurant moving into the space. Like JP really needs another freaking Indian restaurant. Sheesh. So it was happy news that The Haven was opening up, and keeping quality comfort food alive. We went there yesterday with tempered excitement, but after trying some of the dishes, it was apparent that this wasn't just another pub serving unexciting but filling food. The haggis and neeps were a great warm-up, savory and nuanced with spices, and plenty for an entree for one, really. The fish supper was probably the best fried fish I've had in Boston, with a rich, substantial batter, succulent firm fish, and great housemade spiced ketchup. The fries weren't particularly special, but a little crisper and they would be. The burger was cooked to a perfect medium as requested, with a sturdy bun to rein in the mayonnaise-y sauce and other moist things. I'd love to try it medium-rare or rare sometime to see how much better it could be. The top prize definitely went to my beef and ale pie, however, with big chunks of tender beef and well mingled ale-stewed onions under a flaky crust topped with my beloved caraway seeds. It didn't really look like anything special, but each bite was one of those eyes-closed, humming deals where you try to delay swallowing as long as possible. We skipped dessert this time (Surgeon General's warning), but the raspberry Drambuie tart sounded pretty freaking delicious. Dammit, now I want a rusty nail... The only weak spot in my book was the draft beer selection, which leaned heavily on Harpoon, the industrial-scale homebrew-tasting stepchild of the New England beer options. Switch the taps to Smuttynose or BBC, and do the food justice. The bottle options were superior, but this food screams out for a pint! read more

The Haven is a unique spot offering Scottish eats in a cozy, charming spot in JP. I've had the luck of being located just down the road, so I've been able to sample their food numerous times. - Scotch egg -- a hardboiled egg appetizer coated with sausage, with a nice mustard sauce on the side. Simple, yet delicious. - The burger -- EXCELLENT. Always a safe choice, extra juicy and flavorful. You'll end up making a mess with this. The one unfortunate aspect is the fries, which are not greatly seasoned and a bit too thick cut without extra crispiness or flavor to balance out with the bland insides. - The REAL Scottish foods -- haggis, blood sausage. Unfortunately, my palate was not able to tolerate these. The texture and taste are just not appealing to me... But it's interesting that they offer these. - Decent beer selection, craft Scottish selections apparently. Definitely a cool spot to check out, especially if you have an adventurous appetite. read more

I hosted my private dinner here this past Saturday night for 65 people. Now I'll admit right now that I adore the owner--but I swear I didn't know him before our group started frequenting The Haven. We wanted to be accommodating to his regulars, so we held our event early--starting with a cocktail hour at 4PM and then with dinner from 5-7PM. I organized and ticketed the event for my group and did up some lovely decorations (if I do say so myself) and he brought in the house bagpiper, Elias Alexander, to play for us as well, which is always a treat. We had the run of the house and it was a very cozy, intimate get together where we all got to mix and mingle while enjoying drinks... meandering about and visiting with one another before dinner. We were a large group for The Haven and were at maximum capacity. I will also add that when I ticketed the event, we sold out in under an hour and had a wait-list a mile long of people who wanted to come. We pre-selected a choice of mains--Jason, the ownder, provided a great range of selection including Haggis with Tattie and Neeps, Vegetarian Shepherds Pie, Sassitch & Mash, Fish & Chips, and one I'd not tried previously, Chicken Rhumbledethumps which turned out to be a succulently juicy half chicken over a dressing of mashed potatoes with bits of cabbage and onion and I think some cheese... it also seemed to have some kind of crumb crust coating on it as well--it was DELICIOUS and I'd order it again without reservation. There was also a light salad with watercress and a lovely light dressing--just enough to keep the dish from being too heavy. For dessert we had choices of either Sticky Toffee Pudding (which I've greatly enjoyed on previous visits) or Cranachan, which was something I was curious to try. It is an intensely sweet treat made with a thick whipped cream mixed with honey, fresh tart raspberries and oats soaked in a bit of whisky. It was delicious! The starters were Scotch eggs (always delicious at The Haven), and some other things I didn't get to try as I was busy mingling with guests. It was great for the group to be able to sample a little bit of different Scottish cuisine that they'd been curious about for years. The staff did a great job keeping up with a big group that all came in at once. The meals were served fresh from the kitchen and the pace was fine for our group who was happy to socialize while we waited for our dishes to arrive. Jason and his staff were attentive and accommodating to special requests and dietary substitutions needed. I feel very comfortable at The Haven. Many people mentioned feeling like they were enjoying a meal as a guest in someone's home. It has a welcoming atmosphere--which is what I wanted my guests to experience. It was also nice to know my group was in good hands and I could step back and be more of a guest than I'd been at the rest of my weekends' many events. I finally got to talk with people and relax and enjoy myself, too! I would highly recommend this place for an intimate private event. It would be great for a rehearsal dinner--or post wedding brunch (their brunch food is amazing). The owner came out and had drinks with all of our group back at our hotel afterward, along with the piper. He is friendly and sincere and a joy to know. read more

The Haven is a unique neighborhood restaurant where certain things on the menu sound like Dr. Suess words ("neeps & tatties") and everything tastes pretty good. The atmosphere is rustic and home-y, the service is cheerful and friendly. I went there for brunch and had the full Scottish breakfast, which was exactly what you think it is: beans, sausage, blood sausage, bacon, eggs, potato scones. It was a great tasting mountain of blue-collar food to plow through. I also had a scotch egg, which I felt was a must. The best thing on our table, however, was the toffee french toast with blueberries and maple whipped cream. It tastes as good as it sounds and you get a lot of it. All in all, The Haven is a good place. Some people I've talked to have hyped it up for more than it is, which doesn't detract from the reality of what it is, but make sure you manage your expectations or else you may be let down. You're going out for Scottish food; if your standards are where they should be, you'll be happy. If you're expecting to have some sort of food epiphany at this bastion of across-the-pond cuisine, I think you'll find yourself crestfallen. Last night my friend and I trekked out to JP for the Sam Adams Summer Open House... only to realize that I idiotically got the dates wrong and it had happened the night before. To salvage our trip we decided we would make the most of our time in the Stony Brook neighborhood and proceeded to walk over to The Haven. We walked in to a dark yet decidedly friendly feeling space. The antler lighting is incredible, and theres definitely a cool vibe. We snagged the last 2 seats at the bar and said hello to our friendly barkeep. The selection of beers is wonderful. I consider myself to be an amateur afficionado and I was confronted with many bottles I'd never heard of. I chose an insanely delicious and crisp Grozet gooseberry wheat and my girl got the Skull Splitter based on name alone. It was very fruity, yet heavy, an odd brew. We were impressed with our selections and the reasonable pricing. They don't have a full liquor license although I was pleased to see many bottles of Fernet in the back of the bar. We had both kind of already eaten, but can't turn up a chance to try some new things so we ordered the goat cheese and potato dumplings to share. These fluffly bites are what I dream gnocchi will taste of without the inevitable disappointment of a heavy rich gnocchi. They were light and flavorful and the accompanying pesto was incredible. I should mention here that we were presented with two full size portions as a "Welcome to The Haven". Incredible service and perks from an already friendly and welcoming staff. I was completely won over by this place, and even though its a ways out for me by MBTA, I plan on returning. read more

I like trying new things and I'm aware part of that is the risk of disappointment. My problem is, everything at The Haven was incredibly disappointing. From the food and drink selections to the overall service and decor, I was so incredibly let down by this place. Especially after seeing such good things about it on Yelp and being a big fan of Scottish food myself, there was so much lacking here that I literally was sad when I left. I visited recently with a larger group and decided to go for the chef's tasting menu. What better way to get an idea of what the kitchen can do and what's best in the house, right? We even asked for suggested pairings in terms of house and specialty beers and had drinks brought out to us with each new set of plates. That's the thing with the service - stuff was brought out to us, but nobody asked how we were doing. Personally, I found all the food to be really greasy, under seasoned and strictly unpalatable. The drinks we were poured helped a little, but that might be because we cleared a few bottles by midway through the Taste of Scotland, so it wound up being more the Taste of the Bar than anything else. What's worse, we weren't told how much the beers cost that we were drinking, so at the end of the night when the tab was split, me paying the portion JUST for me and my partner came to $115. TOTALLY ridiculous. The layout of this place can be described as dark, uneven, disorganized and cramped. I mention this now because these conditions made it impossible to navigate the sea of crowded tables to try and find a member of staff, and because of the lighting, I couldn't tell which of the waiters was actually mine. The guy who wound up helping me said we had already eaten so we had to pay up, despite the fact that most of the plates went back untouched. I feel really scammed and disappointed with this place.
