Star fish usually is the best fish in Boston. At first when the new management took over portions were bigger fish was thicker. I went there today 12/17/25 and the fish was horrible!!! The fish was under cooked and had dark brown spots on the fish from I'm guessing old oil. And the portions were small and the fish was so thin and was really nothing but fish batter. If I didn't have to return to work I would've returned it all and got my money back. I wish I took pix before tossing it in the trash and thinking to write this review. I called to tell them how horrible the fish was and they told me they were going to have the owner call me so I can express my experience. Hopefully the owner actually calls me. Star fish is trash now I'll personally never go back!!! I wouldn't recommend it to nobody else ever again. read more

This place doesn't even deserve a star. I remember going to Star's fishmarket back in the day and you can get a good piece of fish and seafood. Today my mom wanted fish and chips so we decided to try Star's fishmarket and when I receive the haddock plates in the bag I thought it was a joke because the bag was so late I was wondering what was in it ....nothing. When I open the plates haddock was sliced in half or three times and it had the black stuff on the back of the haddock and fries was raw. Omg unbelievable and I'm never going back to STARS ghetto Seafood Market. They deserve a rating of NO STAR and Zero! Yuck!!! read more

Grabbed some large haddock sandwiches from here & im not impressed. Random broken pieces of fish on top of soggy bread. The sandwich doesn't even taste the same as it used to but it's double the price The clam strip box was really good but the tartar sauce was very watery. Probably will not return for some time read more

Let me first start off by saying this use to be a staple of the community . "Use to be" . Within the last year my last few visits came with red flags and have left me under the impression that this fish place has change hands in ownership without notifying the community and today I think I got my confirmation . Whether there are new owners or not I definitely will not be patronizing or referring anyone to this restaurant or should I say "take out" spot because they want you to place your order and step outside until the food is ready so it's definitely not welcoming . The problem is you can't serve a community for years with excellent, attentive service and then start serving trash and expecting people not to notice the difference. Especially when people are patronizing your business with their hard earned money in an overpriced ,struggling economy. You can't sit down and eat in this place anymore, the prices have gone up , the portions have gotten smaller and listening is not a skill that workers possess . The man that use to run this establishment use to be attentive when taking your order and the food was always fresh . This place use to be popular for its fish sandwiches and now they are just popular for pretending because ain't no way this is the same star fish that served the community for all these years . My order was clearly stated and they still served me whatever they wanted to serve me . I asked for a large haddock sandwich with "no cheese" and to my surprise when I got home I had a half haddock, half whiting and yes my sandwich did have cheese on it . Refer to the picture because Stevie wonder can tell that I was served two different kind of fish on my sandwich. Not to mention this sandwich use to be served with brown bread (if you know you know) I'm disgusted that people think they can serve you whatever they want because new owners or not my last few experiences have been unacceptable. I don't expect a restaurant that has gained the trust of the community to give this kind of poor service and today they definitely played in my face and if they changed owners they are playing in all of the communities faces . The very community that kept their doors open all these years . (Purchased 1/23/24) read more

CHEAP fish sandwich w/ cheese for about $3 bucks & change this HOLE IN THE WALL joint, has no airconditioning so BEWARE because it's HOT inside (but i'd still recommend eating there so that your fried seafood is eaten fresh out of the fryer!) order 1st & pay when your food is ready ---FISH SAMMIE W/ CHEESE: surprisingly served on wheat sandwich bread (don't let this deter you) & you slather it w/ tarter sauce at the counter! the batter on the fish is so light & crunchy, so it's perfect for fish n chips (WHICH THEY HAVE) it's not your ordinary filet o fish at mcdonald's since it's battered instead of flaky! there's a soda machine on the side & i believe they sell some drinks behind the counter as well read more

Star Fish Market - Fish sandwich w/ cheese ~$3! - Seafood Markets Near Me - Roxbury, Massachusetts

Star Fish Market is located at Egelston Square, right beside a public parking lot with a 2 hour limit on weekdays. Though limited in dining-in space with perhaps 5 seats along a counter facing the parking lot and another 5 or so chairs placed by the 3 tables located across from the counter, there is quite a bit of breathing room once you enter through their doors. And good thing too, since business was brisk at lunchtime on the Saturday of my visit. It was a little confusing at first, however, since there was but the one fellow at the counter bagging the orders, so I wasn't sure how to go about placing my order. Turns out he was also the one to talk to about that. Unfortunately, however, since he was busy multitasking, he ended up taking the orders of the fellows who entered the establishment behind me first. Money did not change hands till the food was ready for pick up, and there is a sign posted mentioning their $10 credit/debit card minimum. Their fish sandwich is offered in a few variations: Whiting - Small $2.75; Large $4.25 Haddock - $4.05 (+30 cents for cheese) Porgy (with Bone) - Variable Price Mine was the Large Whiting with Cheese for $4.55 which made for a light yet satisfying meal. The batter was crisp, though the fish was slim between the slices of soft wheat bread. Condiments were available at the counter for self-service. I appreciated that the tartar sauce was chilled, likely due to having been swapped out during my visit. I think I'd like to return to try it in haddock... yet I hesitate... To give you an idea of the neighborhood - When I walked down Columbus Ave toward the fish market, there was a cluster of boys aged perhaps 8-10 hanging out at the corner of a park. As I passed by, the one white boy among his black buddies decided to call out "Ching Chong." read more

Oh good god! This is the last time I will ever go to starfish! If I wanted a frozen kids fish meal, I can just go to Stop and Shop for that crap. The place is a wreck, the portions are something out of the Boston trash dump. This place should be renamed StarFish Pine Street INN. Back in the days, when you said Star Fish, you knew you were getting something good, something made to order well. Some type of fish that you just could not get from anywhere else. Finding whitings feels like hunting down a unicorn. After several phone calls to multiple markets I hit the jackpot with Star. The icing on the cake was not only do they sell fresh fish they also have a counter where you order it prepared (fried only). Ordered some fish to cook at home and also a sandwich. The prices were very reasonable and the fish was prepared perfectly. Crunchy, meaty, non greasy. Lip smacking good. The fish I brought home was also great and perfect for the family breakfast I prepared. I'll be back! read more

SKETCHY NEIGHBORHOOD, BOMB FISH SANDWICHES. Came after i got my drank on fo free at the sam adams brewery. Half the store is a fish market that sells a limited selection of fresh fish.. while the other half is a fried seafood snack bar. We got the fisherman's platter ($12.99) which came with fried fish, scallops, clams (choice of whole clams or strips), shrimp, and fries (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/9gThXXiFbAPNMGGFoX8RnQ?select=ifzAmKq_AxBHmy0YJMeZew). We split that among three people, so obviously we were still pretty hungry, especially since the sam adams gave us the munchies for some fried nomnommies. SO we each ordered a fish sandwich($2.60!), which was simply wheat sandwich bread, a slice of american cheese, and a few pieces of fried fish (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/9gThXXiFbAPNMGGFoX8RnQ?select=hw_CdRKWQzQND1MNtCn5lw). SO simple, yet SO tasty! HIGHLY recommend for the price IF youre around the sam adams brewery... don't waste your money at DOYLES. CREDIT CARDS accepted with $10 minimum purchase! read more

One of the worst fish meals my family has ever had! For $50 we got two fish dinners. The scallops were so overcooked they were hard and dry. The french fries were cold yet burned and dry. The shrimp tasted old and yet had no flavor but somehow they were rubbery. The owner refused to give a receipt despite several requests. The only remotely edible thing was the fish. So disappointed!! Would not recommend to anyone I know. Would not recommend to enemies! Would not recommend to frenemies. I don't know normally post reviews. But this stuff demanded one. read more

Best thing about Star is the prices, some of the best in Boston when it comes to seafood. The quantity is decent I like the trio and the fisherman's platter. You might be able to find fancier fish served to you on white linen, but you won't find better fried fish in Boston, full stop. It's fresh, it's tender, the batter is sublime, and they never commit the cardinal sin of overcooking their scallops. The sandwiches are literally unbelievably cheap, and the seafood platters are masterpieces of fried shellfishy goodness. Someday I'll remember to do my weekly fish shopping here, too, because they sell it by the pound and it looks way better than Stop & Shop's sad cloudy-eyed salmon. Also, pro tip to anyone contemplating a trip here from the Sam Adams brewery, but worried by the comments about the neighborhood: the people who are "sketched out" by Egleston are the same people who reflexively lock their car doors when they see a minority walk through their gated suburb. This is a city--a rich tapestry of humanity, unfolding before you and tempting you with the sweet smell of perfectly fried whitefish. You'll be fine. read more

FIRST THINGS FIRST: NO ONE IS INTERESTED IN "STABBING" YOU ON THE WAY TO THE FISH MARKET!! JERKS! NOT FUNNY! The fish is absolutely delicious here. Quite fresh and not greasy. (I am sure they are also using a quality oil.) I love the fact that they don't use white bread for the fish sandwhiches but wheat. Makes the sandwiches taste even better. I also buy the raw fish and fry My own sandwhiches. The owner is very very nice and treats everyone with respect. A man who understands that in order to have a successful business you have to treat your customers with respect and provide them with a quality product. Star Fish Market has mastered this. read more

OK !! ENOUGH ALREADY ABOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD YOU PUNK ASSES !!!! That being said, This place has great seafood, the best fish sandwich you will ever have, the best clams outside the Cape. The food is never greasy, always fresh tasting and wonderful. I have been going there for years and Mr. Kim has always been the most gracious host. Great prices for both the prepared meals and the fresh fish. Sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone to find that hidden gem, just hold your head up ! read more

Star fish is the best of the best. I wake up on Saturday saying "I want a trio platter", and I get it'! Fish is light and flakey, clams aren't rubbery, shrimp are a decent size. The owner runs the register and is very polite and sometimes flirty. ( I don't blame him, being a beautiful African American woman myself) I see nothing wrong with the neighborhood. I feel safe everywhere I go. Wether it's south-boston, Charlestown or worcester. Remember, fear comes from within. read more

This place is the definition of a hidden gem. I think it is the best fried seafood in Boston. Hands down. Avoid on Friday afternoon though. It is organized chaos at this time. They only do take out. I ABSOLUTELY love Star Fish! I have been eating their delicious fish sandwiches since I was a child! EVERYTHING is good there. I usually get a large fish sandwich with cheese and add tartar sauce and ketchup onto it. I recommend that you try the clam strip dinner, fisherman platter and of course the fish sandwiches. It can get busy around lunch time so I recommend that you call ahead. Sometimes they do not answer the phone when they get really busy so I advise that you give yourself enough time to wait for your order. Great service, great food and very affordable, if you are in the area definitely give it a try! read more

So my friend & I were STARVING and too early for the Sam Adams Brewery tour. We wandered into the rather frightening neighborhood surrounding the brewery but stumbled upon this market. I'm not 100% sure this is the name of the actual place we went but am 95% sure and would love if someone could confirm this.... On one side, an African-American man was running a fish market where you could by fresh fish. On the other side of the counter was a place to order fried fish, fried shrimp, fries, etc. and was run by a Korean family. EVERYBODY was ordering mainly only one thing: the fish sandwich. I have thought about that sandwich every now & again when I think back on that trip to Boston. Drool.... And each sandwich was only like $2.50!!!! As my friend and I practically ran through the scary neighborhood back to the brewery, we sorely regretted only getting 1 sandwich each...it was...the perfect fish sandwich. We consumed them while they were still steaming and finished halfway back to Sam Adams while passing many liquor stores and check cashing places.... The breading of the fillet was flavorful and perfect....the meat was moist and juicy and sweet and delicious! They serve the breaded fish between regular bread you'd buy at the supermarket (square cut pieces of regular commercial store-bought bread) and wrap it up in white paper. But it was simple, tasty, and perfect! We followed suit with the locals and sprinkled ketchup and hot sauce on it. If I ever return to Boston, I'd definitely like to return here! read more

Surprisingly awesome fried fish joint in the middle of Egleston Square. Five years ago you probably would have gotten stabbed trying to get to the place, but even Egleston is getting up with the gentrifyin'. It's got a ways to go, but now that the Stag is closed for business there isn't anyplace that pats you down before you enter. Back to Star FIsh: The fried scallops are freakin' amazing. Little balls of tasty mollusk. And, for being a deep fried and battered food item, it's oddly light and not greasy. I didn't get the usual I-wish-I-hadn't-eaten-all-that-fried-food stomach queasiness that usually hits me after a meal like this. The service can be a bit slow, but they have like, one dude back there doing all the frying, and there is always a line of folks waiting for their fish sandwiches. Last time I was there the place was packed with about 20+ people. They also sell whole fish and fillets. I haven't ventured down that road, but was happy to discover this fact since it is impossible to purchase seafood or fish in JP. That shit at Harvest does not count. read more

This hole in the wall spot in Egleston Square serves some solid fried seafood. Very good for the prices! The fish sandwiches are served on wheat sandwich bread, which caught me a bit off guard, but was delicious. Definitely make sure to top it with some of their homemade tartar sauce. The fried shrimp are large in comparison to other places. These are extremely good, and fairly priced as well! They didn't have whole clams when I came, so I opted for the fried scallops instead... Not sure that I would get those again. They were tasty, but the batter didn't stick very well to the scallop. I'll definitely be back! 4 stars instead of 5 because they haven't had the whole clams either time I've visited. Also, beware the immediate area right out front is a little sketchy (think someone got stabbed across the street very recently) read more

An intense craving for sea creatures that are breaded, fried and crispy VS a large shrimp seafood box and a fish sandwich Who wins? the crustaceans Shrimp seafood box = sturdy paper bag filled with freshly fried giant shrimp, douse them with hot sauce, just try to stop popping them into your mouth, you will not win! Fish sandwich = expected more based upon the previous reviews, sure, it is only two-fitty, but even though the crispy batter was yummy, I would have liked a little more actual fish and the limp sandwich bread was pretty disappointing Korean guy who ran the place was nice and I'll definitely be back to get an entire fish at the accompanying fish market (where you order the fish based upon preparation ie 1) beheaded, 2) sliced 3) filleted, etc... read more

I have been going to this market since I was a young girl. The way cook their fish is good. However the quality of fish was usually hit or miss. Usually on every haddock dinner there are always a few pieces of questionable fish. I mean super thin fish that doesn't resemble haddock. I have never had haddock this super thin anywhere. The questionable fried pieces of haddock are about one quarter of a inch thick. The raw haddock is not like this, only the haddock you buy that's fried. There was always however, at least two pieces that were unquestionably haddock. The last two times I went the haddock plate had all extremely thin pieces. As I say it's like eating fried haddock cut like some thin sushi. As they cool on the plate they become extremely hard and unpleasant to eat. I have been going there for years and when I went in to bring it to the owners attention here's what happened. I called to let him know I was unhappy with the quality of the fish itself. Something was different. He told me if I didn't like it go somewhere else. Mind you I go there often one or two times a week. He always calls me by my name and is happy to have my business. When I get there I went to the raw fish section and got two pieces of haddock and asked him to cook them. He said NO. He then went on to tell me it would cost me thirty dollars extra to cook it. This man has been in our community for two decades. Now he doesn't even care to serve us decent fish. The haddock plate cost enough at least he could give us decent pieces of fish. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The owner treat his long standing customers like crap. And they serve sub standard fish on haddock plates. If I wanted fried haddock cut like thin sushi, I'd order it. He is ripping off the community. He does not care about good customer service or the people in the community. At this point all he cares about is the almighty dollar and serving substandard fish cuts to get it. He doesn't care anymore and he has lost a good customer because of it! I just want others in the community to see he will take short cuts to appease his pocket and rob us of a good quality product. read more

I LOVE this place. I've been coming here for years. The fish sandwich is my favorite and the seafood is great.

Back in the late 90's, my uncles and I ordered food from here the day after my grandmother's funeral. The fried clams with bellies were juicy and sweet. While in Boston due to another death in the family, I thought we'd visit Star Fish again for that same experience. NOT! My stepmom and I just knew we were gonna have some steaming hot, crispy clams. My dad and I walked in and when it was our turn in line, I told the owner that I wanted a clams with bellies dinner. His response was, "Let me check." He came back to the counter and said I was good. Then, my dad wanted to order the same for my stepmom. He was told that I got the last order. So, he ended up getting fish sandwiches instead. After we got in the car, I cracked open my box expecting hot fries, crispy clams, and some cole slaw and tartar sauce. What I got was a total of 6 freaking clams, way too many fries, no bread, coleslaw or tartar sauce. 6 clams?!? Really? Never again. When I told family members what happened and where, they said the quality has dropped for years, and I would have been better off going to Simco's. Sigh. read more

I've always enjoyed the fish here, but the customer service is another thing.
