Sakanaya is one of the best "hidden gems" that I've been to. The food is mouthwatering delicious and the seafood is fresh. If you order a chirashi bowl or a roll, it is made ready to order. There are only two small outdoor tables (each with two seats), but there is a nearby park from which you can eat. Even though Sakanaya is not really in Boston, it's absolutely worth checking out and enjoying. The prices alone are so much better than what you would get in Chinatown or Back Bay. Note: you must pay for small packets of pickled ginger, soy sauce, and wasabi.

Chirashi bowls and having them for lunch at the park behind the store.

Definitely my favorite go to spot for no frills chirashi bowl or sashimi. It's a family owned business with husband and wife working together. Select your fish in the cases and let them know how if you want rice ($1 extra) with it and if you're splitting the fish with someone let them know that too and they will basically make a chirashi bowl for you. It's much cheaper than going to a restaurant. There is no seating but can go to the park a short walk behind the store with picnic tables in a nice day. There is also a small Japanese bakery next door to pick up something sweet and a matcha for after the meal. I always pick up some frozen marinated fish while waiting that I can broil and have with my rice and veggies and/or pickles that I can make at home so easily. They're only $8/pack. So glad to have something like this in my neighborhood.

Cute lil family owned business, being a good local spot to get sushi-grade fish and comforting cold sashimi don (or rice bowl). The staff were very friendly and the selection of fish you can choose from is usually much more plentiful if you aside earlier in the day. Parking also is plentiful, despite how it's on the street. Anyway, the fish was fresh and sweet (especially the scallop) when I tried this spot for the first time. The sushi rice was pretty refreshing as well, as it definitely stimulated the appetite with each bite. For a friendly spot with good portions for the price in today's economy, I'd totally recommend this spot and I'm planning on going back for more!

What...? How have I not visited this small but mightily-awesome establishment a lot sooner? This tiny Japanese fish market is just a couple minutes away and I've somehow failed to visit them until very recently. I guess it has a lot to do with not craving fish for the last year BUT when the first hint of desire for seafood returned, their name immediately popped up in my mind. I've been back several times since the initial visit. Their variety of sashimi grade fish as well as specials in their frozen section (fish trimmings and fish heads) definitely suit my personal culinary preferences. On top of that, they actually provide a chirashi service (for a dollar) where they slice the fish you purchased and lay it atop sushi rice for you. This allows you to fully customize your chirashi bowls according to what you crave in the very moment. Friendly people, fresh ingredients, decently priced. Definitely recommend and can't wait to be back again soon!

So delish! Had the option of directly buying the fish and asking them to make it into a bowl with $1 extra for rice

I heard about Sakanaya very recently and was excited to load up on some fresh sashimi. We tried a variety of items and here's what we thought. Delicious, would definitely get again - Argentinian red shrimp are really nice and succulent. - Tako wasa tastes like restaurant quality and is only $3 -- definitely a good deal! - Salmon scraps are good, great for poke bowls. Maybe would get again - Whole salmon was pretty good, not much fishiness. Wouldn't get again - Sweet shrimp were not super sweet/fresh-tasting. Argentinian red shrimp was much better. - Bluefin tuna toro was a miss. It had a lot of chewy pieces of fat. Maybe I picked the wrong piece. I would get the Argentinian red shrimp, tako wasa, and salmon scraps again!

I love this little Japanese owned sushi grade fish market. It is tiny, but they have fish imported from Japan. Prices are fair. I like to choose the fish and they will slice it to make chirashi bowls for you. Or you can select from their menu sushi/chirashi bowls for very reasonable prices. I wouldn't say it's super high quality but it's good for what you're paying.

We ordered for pick up. Sushi was delicious. We selected one of the platters. They basically charge for everything like wasabi packets, soy sauce and utensils. Overall, it's already

Sakanaya is wonderful. We have been consistently getting our sushi fish from Sakanaya over the past 5 years, and they've never disappointed us. We recently got a party platter that was amazing, and the owner gifted us a lot of extra leftover pieces from the store without extra charge. It was delicious! My favorites are toro and salmon.

Very fresh fish, love it. The service is always friendly. I don't know what ambiance means, for a fish market. It's not a lounge.

Made my own yellowtail and tuna bowl, the yellowtail was bad and smelled like ammonia. Not sure why this place has so many good reviews.

My real disappointment wax the 25 bucks for scallops that were soggy, not a good batter, Terrible Cole slaw, basic tarter from Ken's steakhouse pre packaged. My mistake risking 25 bucks on scallops at a place hadn't eaten before... I don't see returning. Appears a locals place to grab fresh fish to cook at home. Did have fresh lobster tanks for fresh lobsters . 25-27 bucks was fair for this lobster roll compared to my lobster roll last week at Belle Island.

I went for the soft shell crab sandwich $24 off the Daily Features menu. It was good, but perhaps a little over fried. They let me swap out my french fries and cole slaw for the brussels sprouts with bacon and the roasted butternut squash, to make for a healthier meal.

I went to the bar for the $2 bowl of clam chowder on Chowder day at around 3:30 pm and was given a…read morepaper cup of chowder that was room temperature and congealed. I informed the server that it wasn't hot and asked for it to be heated up and served in a bowl. He said that the cup is the same size as the bowl and took off with the cup of chowder. I wanted to tell him that the quantity wasn't an issue, but I wanted the chowder served in a real bowl and point out that many other diners had their chowder served in bowls, but he left before I could. When he came back, he handed me another paper cup of lukewarm chowder. At this point, I realized he had no intention of serving me a nice, hot bowl of chowder, but that he would likely bring me a 3rd paper cup of congealed chowder if I remained. I noticed that there was a free table on the floor, so I decided to leave the bar and sit at a table hoping to get better service. I did get better service with a very nice waiter who was patient, pleasant, and respectful, and he brought me a hot bowl of chowder that was very good. I also ordered the $1 Happy Hour oysters which were also very good and a nice Sonoma Chardonnay. However, I was disappointed with the crab cake sliders which had hardly any crab meat and were mostly gooey filler. Legal Sea Foods used to have really good crab cakes, loaded with crab meat, but these sliders were not up to their former standards. I walked past the bar on my way out and could see that there was a cauldron of chowder on the bar surrounded by stacks of paper cups. Clearly, the cauldron didn't keep the chowder as hot as it would be if ladled out from a pot on the stove in the kitchen. My advice to diners is not to order chowder at the bar if you see the cauldron set out with paper cups. I had a bowl of chowder at the bar at the Legal Sea Foods near the New England Aquarium on New Years Eve, and it was served in a china bowl and was hot. No problems. I think Chestnut Hill management would be wise to have a runner take the chowder order from the bartender and bring out the chowder, hot, from the kitchen in a bowl. Paper cups ruin the chowder experience: the taste of paper and the low temperature diminishes the flavor and consistency of perfectly good chowder, which defeats the purpose of chowder day, a celebration of their signature chowder. If a diner asks for the chowder to be served hot in a bowl, giving a diner one paper cup after another of tepid chowder shows a lack of regard. It's better to explain that the only place at the Chestnut Hill location where a diner can have hot chowder in a crockery bowl is at a table, not the bar. I think that a quality restaurant should never serve diners take out paper cups of chowder in the first place.

We also ordered garlic noodles, mac and cheese, and fried pickles. The garlic noodles are fine but not great. It tastes like cheap takeout noodles and I wouldn't get it again. Similarly, the mac and cheese is also just fine. I actually liked the fried pickles though because batter was seasoned well but just a little salty. If you come here, get ready to eat messy! Thankfully they give you bibs and gloves so you can eat comfortably. Next time I want to try the Tom Yum sauce.
