Amazing shipping service to North Carolina, package was very well packed and Lobster meat was still rock solid frozen! Originally from the Boston area and here in Charlotte lobster meat is unheard of. We will be making a Nova Scotia staple "Creamed Lobster" over bread/toast, with the accompanying sides. After passing by this little neighborhood seafood store several times over the past year, the special lady friend and I finally ventured in to look at the offerings. The space is small with a few rows of fish and shellfish, of which the number that are farm raised (as opposed to wild caught) can be counted with one hand. After having a recent bad experience with a piece of flounder at a supermarket which turned into a mashed potato consistency with a light pan-fry, I found out it had less to do with my cooking skills but more to do with the fact that it was improperly frozen thereby ruining the protein structure upon reapplying heat. Fortunately, the fish here is the antithesis to the former, since the selection is limited due to the fact that they only pick what is fresh and seasonal for their customers, and they are not afraid to offer a few fish that are not as commonplace such as monkfish and hake, which any epicurean knows to be quite tasty. As other reveiwers have noted, customer service is on point since they are like your old-fashioned fish monger prior to the days of the mega supermarkets where if you're short on cash, they let you know your word is good to make it up on the next visit (or supremely confident you will be satisfied with their product and return for more). Prices are not cheap but you definitely pay for what you get in terms of quality. As for the verdict on the piece of hake that I purchased, a little dusting of flour followed by a few minutes in olive oil and garlic accompanied by grilled asparagus, I felt like Eric Ripert preparing a dish at Le Bernadin upon seeing the reaction from my lady friend. Excellent fish. Can't go wrong here. The staff are knowledgable and communicate well. We got half a pound each of the wild Alaskan king salmon and north atlantic farmed salmon (a little fattier than the king salmon). We have gotten the king salmon before and thought it was spectacular. We plan on baking the salmon with a little salt, pepper, rosemary, lemon and some spring onion from our garden so as to season while best preserving the flavor of the salmon. I'll update the post after our meal. UPDATE: It was fabulous, as expected. My husband and I try to pick up fish there once a week as I walk home from work, and it ends up being every other week or so. It makes a great weekend treat. One last notes: Wulf's will be closing for a few weeks for renovations, but the dates aren't set. Maybe some time this fall? read more

I've bookmarked a series of ahi poke recipes for a while now, and finally got the chance to follow through. After doing lots of research on fish markets, I decided to visit Wulfs. So glad that I did! Extremely friendly and helpful service. The owner talked me through the origin of the tuna and gave me some useful preparation tips. He even sliced it into cubes for me! It was a little pricey, but when I tasted and ate the (raw) fish... WHOA, so worth it! Unlike subpar quality tuna, this did not taste "fishy" at all; so fatty and fresh. I recommend everyone to splurge a little and support Wulf's, so they can continue providing top quality seafood for the area. Also, plenty of street parking outside of the shop, in case you are driving! read more

Walking in here was an absolutely surreal experience. A huge bright space lined with ice tanks filled with various seafood offerings, a 1960s cash register (the kind that goes chik chik dzzzing!), and no customers. I felt a little like I was on the Brady bunch and a little like I was aboard the Solaris. Freshest fish and seafod you can find, pricey, but worth it. Well well worth it. Go, for pete's sake, be free of the shackles of the super market's pre-frozen reign. Docking a star because they close randomly at 5:30pm on weekdays. Precludes weekday fresh fish. But if I could add a half star because I got 2 free scallops for being a cute girl, I would. ;) me: aren't you gonna weigh those last two? fish guy: nah. only for a pretty girl like you. me: I gotta tell ya, it works for me. Ah, I've only been once but I plan on frequenting Wulf's now that I have been. If you love sushi stop paying so much for it out at restaurants and make yourself a fabulous sushi dinner with Wulf's fish and seafood!! My boyfriend and I got 1/2lb salmon, 1/3lb tuna and 1/3lb fluke (35$) along with a tray of uni (sea urchin - REALLY self indulgent at $25 a tray). So we paid 60$ for sushi dinner and sushi lunch the next day, for two of us. Totally worth every penny in my opinion. The fish was so incredible. The thing that really makes me love Wulf's is the smell when you walk in. A lot of seafood places smell fishy when you first walk in, but Wulf's smells like the ocean - like if you sniff out the window when you're driving to the beach. Because all the fish is so fresh it hasn't even had the chance to get stinky. When I got the fish home I put my nose right up to the cut of fish and smelled...nothing! These guys are cool. I went out of my way to try this place out, never even been to that area but I live close enough so I figured why not drive down there and try the fish! My decision to go there was based on yelp. I don't really carry cash, every place on earth takes credit/debit cards. So after I ordered everything and they had it all bagged up, cut up and everything, you can imagine I felt pretty embarrassed when I pulled my card out and they said they don't take cards. I ordered about $40 worth of fish and only had $11 on me. I told them, I'm sorry I didn't know you didn't take credit cards and they said there was an atm down the block but I couldn't find it and so I came back to apologize and they said "we're old fashioned, tell you what, you can take this fish home and pay us back next time you come" I was pretty shocked honestly, how could they trust me? That's crazy! So I took the fish and on my way back to the car, there is the ATM! I went back in and paid it, lol. Good fish too! it was definitely fresh! But it is pricey and the parking sucks, but they get 5 stars for trusting a complete stranger to repay them and not making me feel stupid for trying to pay with a credit card. read more

Bunch of good guys working there. They are open 5AM and are very serious about their fish. Ask them any questions you have, as they are very knowledgeable. Their fish usually looks exceptionally fresh. The workers have good albeit strange sense of humor. I like to support small businesses like Wulf's. It's a small shop selling good fish at fair prices. Wulf's is definitely one of my favorite fish markets. The staff is very helpful, offering ways to prepare the fish and even pointing out what the freshest fish they have that day. Everything is prepared early in the morning, I happened to stop by at 6am one day (Waaaaay early for me!) and Alan was reading a newspaper while all of the fish was already prepared and laid on ice! The fish is definitely on the expensive side, but the freshness can't be compared and the quality is worth it! The selection does vary since they do select only what they think looks good though they will always stock the more popular fish such as tuna and salmon. read more

Simply put, Wulf's sells the freshest, best fish in Boston. The store is absolutely spotless and the staff are warm, genial and extremely helpful whenever I've had any questions. For a while I tried buying fish at Whole Foods because, frankly, it's easier if I'm already there buying other groceries, but there is no comparison between the superlative quality offered at Wulf's and the overpriced mediocrity at Whole Foods. Today I was a few dollars short for my purchase and the man who helped me didn't bat an eye; instead he said, "just bring it in next time." I most certainly will! FYI they're cash only. read more

One of my favorite fish markets to go to. You can get incredibly fresh seafood at a reasonable price. The staff is knowledgable and super friendly. They will let you taste anything and everything...raw. There was one time where I was skeptical about trying this shrimp raw so the guy peels it and pops it in his mouth to prove that it's safe to eat raw and that they carry the only freshest seafood possible. After making my fish purchase, the guy throws in 5 or 6 of the shrimp I wouldn't try raw in a baggy for me to try cooked at home for free....what a sweetheart! I love buying their tuna whether I'm cooking it as a steak (rare, of course) or sushi style. My only gripe is that sometimes they close very randomly. read more

So I can't say that Wulf's is my favorite fish market ... but Wulf's is my only fish market, because I've never been to another and I now believe I need only one. I finally went over the weekend wiv my brother and the gentleman (well, hell, they're both gentlemen, if they don't mind my dragging them all over Brookline for dinner things.) It was worth it. The place sure isn't pretty inside but what they lack in decor, they make up for in fish. If only it were the same with prospective mates ... Wulf's is tiny inside and their selection is, well, select. But as for the things with scales ... the fish is really fresh and therefore, rather expensive. Considering the Stop 'n Shop outpost down the street stocks only the frozen and shrink-wrapped varieties, I'm already willing to shell out for shellfish (ahhh, Dar, go away!) and 'asides, the wares here look and taste so much better. Also, you can shoot the shit with the fish guy, who tells dirty jokes while he fillets your purchase. That's fun. Especially with two dudes in tow. In short, though they don't have the widest variety, I'd much rather pay a small local biz a little more money for better product than give Stop 'n Shop almost as much for frozen, limp, depressed-looking something-or-other from the Chuck. read more

Sushi quality fish! I stopped in at a road runner pace, needing fish for a first time ceviche dish. I was disappointed that they didn't carry Tilapia as I anticipated this would be the fish I'd use. However, they explained that often the fish comes in frozen and therefore, not "fresh" so they didn't tend to stock it. They did offer me an alternative suggestions (red striped bass) which is also a traditional fish used for ceviche and explained the taste and texture was actually a bit more delicate than tilapia and may even suit my dish better. I went with their expertise and the fish was amazing. Though I "cooked" it in the lemon/lime marinade, I have a few raw bites out of curiosity and it was amazing. Next time I venture into making sushi, I'm relying on Wulf's to supply me with my most important ingredients! read more

I've always wanted to come here and now that I pass it every day on my way to and from work, I wll make it a regular habit! I went somewhat later in the day (mid afternoon) and it looked like they had sold out of some things, but they still had a decent selection left. They cut the fish right in front of you, (seriously, step back or you risk getting a stray scale on your face!), and were very nice even though I was annoying and said "can I have about this much" holding my fingers apart to demonstrate. I am thrilled to discover they open at 5 and will now stop in on my way to work at 6 to get better selection (in my sleepy early morning haze I'd never noticed before!). For fresh, great quality fish I find the prices reasonable. It's little stores like this that make this neighborhood lovely! read more

Staff are very friendly and helpful. I don't feel like I am being rushed or am annoying them by asking questions. Price might be slightly higher, but I don't mind paying little extra for high quality seafood. I feel good about spending money here to support small stores like this. read more

Wulf's is a great local fish market in Brookline I stumbled upon while having lunch. So good in fact that I now travel from Revere to go there. The set up is simple, a large variety of fresh local and exotic seafood neatly displayed in the shop window, The owner greeted us as soon as we walked in and gave a small crowd of people a quick history of the business. I'm no expert but this was some of the freshest looking fish I have seen outside of Whole Foods. The prices are reasonable but seafood can get expensive. The last time I went he had a special on salmon, he had a variety of smaller pieces that were only $5 a pound, tasted the same as the bigger cuts at only a 1/3 of the price. Wulf's also had some of the biggest jumbo shrimp I have seen for sale outside of a restaurant. read more

**FYI they DO take credit cards. ** I went in near closing time tasked to buy fish for a sushi party but with zero idea of what to buy. The two employees working were quick to help me out and asked all the right questions. I left with beautifully cut tuna, salmon, and stripped bass that they took out of the back just for me because they thought it would be great for the sushi. With warm smiles, the two employees thanked me for coming in to the "best seafood market in the country" and I have to say that the pleasure is all mine! As for the fish itself: melt in your mouth goodness. Most of it turned into straight sashimi. My guests were thrilled. I love Wulf's and buy an embarrassing amount of salmon there. Their fish is always super fresh, they have a great selection, and they know their stuff. It's always the same three or four dudes in there, and they're as nice as can be. It's like an old-school shopping experience, where people actually have a conversation rather than just transact. They'll also special order fish for you. Yes, it's pricey, but seafood isn't really where I want to do my bargain-shopping anyway. You get what you pay for here, in a good way. read more

The fish appeared pretty fresh, with the exception of the softshell crabs (it was early season though). The staff was very nice and fairly knowledgeable about the fish. Very accomodating and the young man that assisted me with the order was courteous to a tee. Had they used plastic gloves or tongs - anything but their BARE HANDS - to handle my raw seafood I wouldn't have been repulsed. But they didn't and I was. Fish and scallops were fresh and tasty. read more

I came across this place by accident while I was walking through the neighborhood on a photography assignment. I asked if I could take a few photos, and they were nice enough to let me. I've bought fish for sushi here a few times and it's been the freshest, best tasting fish I've ever gotten! They're also incredibly helpful, attentive, and friendly there, and they'll do what it takes to make sure you get the best cut of fish for you even if it means they have to cut up what would have been a gorgeous tuna steak! read more

This place is an absolute gem! I'm a relatively new customer and this is it. My goto defacto fish shack. I first was recommended this store by word of mouth, co-workers and such. Then I checked it out on here of course, then went to see for myself. I was making Frutti de Mare and I don't play when it comes to seafood. These guys took a small crazy order from me on the phone to hold (i wasn't going to get there until damn near closing) and they kept me perfect quality everything. I needed a handful of mussels (only cooking for 2 ppl) and they only had these giant mesh bags full so he cut me a super deal on that. Friendly staff, super knowledgable, fun to do chat with and everything I saw there was amazing. The scallops? Oh. My. God. The were $30 a lb and worth every penny. I've ate at hundreds of upscale seafood joints on all coasts and never tasted scallops this good and this was from my own kitchen! I overdid the crushed red pepper in the sauce (sautéed in olive oil w/ garlic) and while I enjoy a hard kick it was a little overpowering, but listen - these friggin' scallops were so sweet and succulent that *they* overpowered the spice! It was like a sweet and spice competition there! Juicy! Oh man, I am totally going back tomorrow to fill a similar order to impress a friend on not only my culinary skills but the quality of this little fish market. If this tells you anything, I work in Newton and live in Stoughton. It's a 25 min drive down i95 to get home. But when I want to cook a serious seafood dish I'll brave the insane rush hour traffic to go from Newton to Brookline (right????), pick up the fish, and take almost an hour getting home just after leaving the market because nothing else will do anymore. Grr, now I'm hungry and want my Frutti de Mare NOW!!! EDIT: They only take cash so make sure to hit the ATM before you get there. We used to shop at Wulf's fish market on Harvard St in Brookline. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Seafood is always fresh and in good quality. I really really miss them in that location, but now we have to make-do, with only occasional visits further out in Boston. read more

I can't understand why people think this place doesn't have a good selection. Fish is and should be seasonal. In the spring through the fall the selection is awesome. In the winter the selection is not as wide because it is not in season. These guys go down to the fish pier every day and have years of experience picking the best fish. Wholefoods get deliverys twice a week. Comparing the two stores is insane. Wulfs is a throw back to what life used to be like before we moved away from small business. I refuse to buy fish from any place other then wulfs. One thing to mention is they only take cash so hit the ATM. read more
