Great pastrami sandwiches. There is so much meat, next time I may ask for a second bun so I can use the extra meat for another sandwich.

This location is definitely going downhill a bit. We ordered a bunch of food last night and one of the pastrami sandwiches was missing so I called in to let them know and they said that they don't have any proof that I am telling the truth. They instructed me to call the general manager in a couple of days and see if she (Jessie Ayala) is willing to refund me the pastrami sandwich, which is nearly $15 with tax. The sandwiches are getting smaller and the quality is definitely going down. I know that we are in the middle of a pandemic, but there are still plenty of places that will serve up delicious food and the quantity matches the prices. Pooor, 10 minute wait. I know its always busy. Got a chili cheese dog with fries and medium coke. My coke full of ice barely any coke, fries cold and hot dog which is the last item waiting to complete order walk to my car. The cheese does not even melt every was cold. I ordered the wet fries with gravy and pastrami burger. I liked both the fries and burger. Huge portions. Items are sold separately not as a combo. They made me wait a long time on the drive thru. I've been here before but this time everything was changed because it took 28 minutes to get my food. Apparently they had to go outside and pick the onions, wash them off, slice them, egg wash and batter them, and then quick freeze them before putting any into the deep fryer to make onion rings. The crew was very rude when I pulled up to the intercom, I had to repeat my order 4x and they still didn't get it right. I usually wouldn't make a big deal but this place is pricey so when I got home and my order was incorrect of course I called. On the back end of a road trip, I saw a billboard ad for The Hat. I've always wanted to try this reputable establishment, so I stopped in and ordered a World Famous Pastrami Dip. The sandwich was tasty and loaded with tender pastrami, pickles, mustard and some moist dip. I added a couple banana peppers into the fold. I was still in a slight food coma from Thanksgiving but who knows when I'll get a chance to eat here again. It was delicious. read more

The most RUDE restaurant owner I've come across in years! Furthermore, the worst food I've ever received from a Hat restaurant. I've been going to The Hat for 20 years. My family has be patronizing The Hat for 50 plus years, stating at the original in Alhambra Ca. However, this was the first time my family and I visited the Upland location. I ordered promptly but had a few requests. The old grey-haired grumpy man taking my order (I can't use gentleman for this worm) acted like I was invisible. So during my order I tried to make small talk with him to see if I could cheer him up. It was not busy at the time and we were the only customers in line. I asked him if the chain is still privately owned and if he is one of the owners? He didn't even look me in the eye before he rudely said, "There's more than one owner." This guy! He acted like he was too good to answer any questions. All I wanted to tell him was that my family has been enjoying their food for a very long time. You know ... a compliment. But really!? Why the attitude? You sell pastrami and fries sir. Sure you're wealthy now but humble yourself. That is what I really wanted to say to him. Be nice to the people who have made you successful despite your personality shortcomings. You should have seen the look on his face when I requested my fries be extra crispy. I thought he was going to whack me right then and there. As if the above is not bad enough, we received our food. Cold dry pastrami. There was literally a soggy, mushy paper thin half of a bun on the bottom of my pastrami burger. The roll used for my wife's COLD pastrami was so little and narrow that her hands looked more like the buns. What the...? "Is this all a bad dream?" I said to my wife. At other Hat locations I always feel like I've died and gone to pastrami chili cheese fries heaven. Regretfully, that day, I felt like I was in HAT HELL!!! All this for $36.00. Never again! The Hat organization is failing to recognize that they are no longer the only good pastrami / chili cheese fries joint in town. Holy moly. Don't even know how describe. Don't come here if you don't like big portions and want to watch your waistline. This place is incredible. We come here after kids' baseball games and get pastrami, chili cheese fries (it's literally enough for 4 people). It never disappoints and we've been coming for over 20 years. If you are a California resident and have not tasted the triumphant pleasure of a Hat pastrami dip with a side of pastrami chili fries, you are missing one of the finest edible California pleasures. Seriously my father has been bringing me here since before I can remember and I believe his father did the same for him. Definitely not the place to go if you are on a diet or counting calories, but easily a favorite on cheat day! The pastrami is freshly cooked in what has to be magic because no matter which location you go it is always amazing. I love coming for lunch, dinner or even a snack and never leave without a smile or hungry. The servers are always friendly and polite, even when it's crazy busy. Sometimes theres a wait since this place is a favorite, but totally worth it. What more do I really need to say except get in here and grab one for yourself! read more

Best chili cheese fries! I always order my chili cheese fries with pastrami, pickles, and tomatoes. YUM! With all the toppings it comes close to $10 but it's totally worth it! The portion size is ridiculous and can easily stuff 2-3 people. It's HUGE! Not too crazy about their sandwiches though. They're just okay in my opinion. I love The Hat but this had to be my worst food portion experience ever! I will guess you get different serving size in the drive-thru than inside. I ordered the Chili Cheese Fries with Pastrami and a Pastrami. Usually the order of fries is so huge 2-3 people definitely can be full. When I say it was enough for one person with barely enough chili or Pastrami and a bunch of dry fries. I ordered the Pastrami dry no dip and my bread was soggy. So, disappointing when you have your tastebuds already for what you know to be excellent service with excellent food. $24 wasted... This is the best place for pastrami and chili cheese fries. Definitely a must when in the Upland area. Just make sure to bring back-up as the chili cheese fries with pastrami on top can feed three persons....overall it is VERY GOOD. COME HUNGRY!!! read more

Simply not as good as it once was. Recently, the customer service has taken a turn for the worse. Ordering has become a hassle because of a language barrier, very hard to understand the drive thru employees. I tried to order the pastrami fries without chili and they looked at me like I was from another planet. I just wanted fries, with pastrami toppings. When I got my order, they said they couldn't put the pickles and mustard on it. I'm curious how they are able to put it on a sandwich but not fries? The last time I went there I got food poisoning. The food is OK but service sucks. I specifically asked for no cheese on the pastrami burger. Said it twice. The cashier who barely spoke English with 3 teeth messes that up. When we go up to have it corrected it took a long time in order for them to get it right. Then we ask for a very small container of barbecue sauce and they try and charge me. I say that should be free of charge considering they messed up our order in the first place. He still wanted to charge me for a very tiny container of barbecue sauce. read more

Stopped in yesterday for lunch since we were in the hood and, needless to say, I had great expectations since they have the "World's best pastrami or World's #1 pastrami" or something like that. How do I know that? It was on the sign!!! The setting reminds me of something straight out of the 70s. Dark panel walls with matching booths. I don't mind that as long as the food is good. Being from the midwest it's kinda welcoming. With all the panelling, there's still a lot of natural light so it's not cave-ish or anything. The line to order's almost out the door and it moved pretty quick. The menu's on the backwall above the register and I notice that the sandwiches were pretty pricey ($7.79 each). So my husband got the pastrami and I got the roast beef au jus. With that we got a small fries and a small soft drink and a cup for water and our bill was almost $22. Got our food pretty quick and the fries, even though, they were a size small came in a brown paper bag and was almost half full. There were plenty of fries and they were actually pretty good, but needless to say, both of us couldn't eat it all. Apparently, you can top your fries with their gravy or chili but being first timers here, we just wanted the basics. The sandwiches had the soft bread with the meat in it (his pastrami and mine roast beef) and that's it. I got the au jus with my roast beef and that came in a covered cup. The roast beef was soft and good, but the au jus tasted like watery soy sauce. It was a tad salty and made the sandwich wet. If that's all you want for your jus, it did the job. I kept thinking something was missing. I guess I shouldn't compare it to the same sandwiches in Chicago where there were cheese and peppers in there but I wanted to try it in its intended form but had to get extra peppers from the counter but, alas, no cheese in sight. The pastrami was alright too. Nothing extra-ordinary and my husband actually liked my roast beef more than his pastrami. I miss food like this when we travelled through Chicago and New York. Full of flavors and came with everything on it. There was hot dog on the menu too. I was wondering what they put on the hot dogs here when you order one since all the condoments were in tiny packets on the front counter and not like those Chicago style hot dogs that once you ordered a dog, you would also get the pickles, relish, mustard, onions, tomatoes, ketchup handed to you and, of course, extra cheese to go with your fries as well. First place I stopped at when I visited from Hawaii, and it's the exact same as I remember it growing up. Outstanding pastrami, and the chili cheese fries are amazing if you add pastrami on them! Same crew from when I was 15 is working there and they know us on first name basis so it feels like home! A little pricey but it's quality cuts of pork and great food so it's not a problem. Anywhere between 35-50 bucks for a family of four and perfect for a casual date! Great restaurant that live up to its name! read more
