Kouign amann pastry
Oshi J.

One of the most amazing pastry I have ever tasted a Kouign amann. It is best when warm, but just as delicious later. As we had to buy a box to go. It is like caramelized croissant but rolled like a cinnamon bun! You must try!

I've been meaning to go to French Guys Bakery and I'm glad I finally went: it honestly reminded me of the cafés in Paris. The prices are fair for the amazing quality, and everything is fresh and looks beautiful. I got the almond croissant, and it was super flaky with a generous amount of almonds while not being overly sweet. The inside is small but cozy (it's literally warm from the ovens), and the cottage-style exterior adds to the charm. The staff was friendly, and while seating is limited, it's a sweet little spot to sit and enjoy a pastry.

I got a raspberry croissant and it was delicious! It was filled with plenty of jam & the stripes of red are so pretty! Service is amazing, it was my first time here so I asked about when these were made and the staff were super attentive & patient.

Beautiful building. Beautiful interior. Creaky stairs for the upper level. Hot in the summer. Moderately priced pastries. No greetings when you enter but polite staff. Weird tea flavors. I wanted an earl grey tea but it only comes in an orange flavor.

Delicious pastries, unique loft style seating, and friendly staff. These are just some of the reasons why I love stopping by this bakery on my way to the office. They have both indoor and outdoor seating and is a wonderful vibe especially during spring and summer. This bakery is located on East Roy in the Capitol Hill area and opens at 7AM. They also have a 2nd location in University Village that recently open this past Spring. This bakery serves up delicious pastries, breads, sandwiches, and desserts. I've tried numerous pastries from their line up. My favorites are their framboise croissant, chocolate hazelnut croissant, pain au chocolate, french toast, madeleines, sablés, and canelés. I've also tried their warmed up caprese sandwich and it did not disappoint. They sometimes sell Paysan Breton French butter for $9. I took one home along with one of their fresh baguettes. Aside of pastries they also have a coffees and teas. The French Guys is worth the carb and sugar intake. Great service as well.

Delicious pastries in a cute, small shop! I got a Cannelé and a ham and bechamel croissant, which were both delicious! The croissant had creamy bechamel layered inside along with perfectly crispy cheese on top, and the pastry itself was perfectly flaky. The Cannelé was a perfect small sweet bite as well! The service was good, and the line was pretty quick on a Thursday morning. Would love to come back next time I am in the area!

I was shopping at the U District farmer's market, and I couldn't resist the beautiful display of carbs at The French Guys stall. Kouign Amann ($6) - Hmm, these looked a bit suspicious and after examining them more closely, I'd say these particular pastries are a cross between a cinnamon roll and a croissant, more akin to a morning bun than a typical kouign amann. The pastry has very loosely rolled croissant dough which is doused in a sticky, stretchy caramel syrup. When I say sticky, I mean exceptionally sticky, even sticking to and tearing the wax covered paper bag it was placed in. The exterior areas not covered by the caramel have a bit of a dry, hard crisp. I don't believe the dough is laminated with sugar at all. Is this pastry tasty? Certainly. But is it a kouign amann? Emphatically no. (3/5) Almost Croissant ($6) - Tons of smooth almond frangipane fill the inside of the croisannt, giving a fragrant almond flavor. The exterior has a good caramelized flavor but there is essentially no crust and the flakiness is lacking. I wonder how many hours ago this pastry was baked. It does not feel fresh and instead seems to have some moisture buildup. It's a very sweet treat. (3/5) Baguette ($4) - The crust of this baguette is a bit weaker and soft, while the inside has an okay chew. There are larger holes so it's relatively airy. Flavor is mostly of the flour - the ferment time seems to be a little less than required to give a really complex flavor. It's just not that developed and kind of wan. It's better than a typical grocery store baguette, but really pales in comparison to many of the artisan bakeries in Seattle. (3/5) To be fair, everything was purchased at the farmers market, so the bread/pastries could have been stored in plastic containers or something to be shipped out from the baking facility. That might explain the issues with all of the crusts. I'll have to visit one of their actual bakeries and try to get fresh pastries.

I didn't think this place was as bad as everyone made it out to be. I really enjoy the vibes, decor, and quiet upstairs dining. If you're looking for a new place to work in U Village, this is the best. But the coffee is a bit pricey, and I've had it served lukewarm a few times. The pastries look delicious but every one I tried was just ok and tasted maybe a couple days old. Also, all of the workers act like they're tired of dealing with customers. Now I understand why many don't think it's that great. It's not as prestigious as it tries to be, but it's still a decent spot for a snack or morning breakfast.

Stopped at The French Guys when leaving Seattle to have some great pastries for our road trip home - and this was definitely one of the main highlights of our Seattle trip. The pastries were all incredible and I recommend all of them. I'll be thinking of these pastries for a very long time.

Pros: this is a really cute place! Staff and other customers are both so nice. The pastry is pretty nice. Spinach crescent is really tasty. Kouign-Amann is recommended to me highly by other customers. However, it basically tastes like how it looks. To each their own. Cons: parking around here can be somewhat challenging due to the location (well, it's Capital Hill after all)

Great cafe for pastries! I ordered their chocolate croissant which was warm and tasty. The chocolate was rich and sweet and the croissant was on the crispier side. The cafe itself looks great and feels very warming which is a great place to work in or study at.

I grew up in a small town with a baker from Alsace. Do you make any regional breads? Thanks.

There was a complimentary amuse bouche, small root vegetable soup with a crunchy sunchoke chip- flavorful and nice start to the meal. From there we ordered: - hamachi crudo - light, fresh, flavorful - gambas - butterfly grilled and served on a yummy sauce that was a little salty in its own but good to dip bread in - salad - shareable portion and liked the fresh herbs - steak frites - came with a good portion of skirt steak and fries, but was surprised by the cook on the steak- it was well done. The meat was chewy although not tough so did still make a dent in the entree, and was pretty heavily doused in sauce. Fries were fine. Would likely try something else next time - creme brulee - solid execution, would order again - chocolate mousse- ok, was on the sweeter side Overall would return for drinks and apps if in the neighborhood.

I got the St. Germaine spritz and we shared the lemongrass steak nachos, frites, and kimchi arancini! St Germaine spritz: I love a cocktail/alcoholic beverage that is on the sweeter side. I don't really love when can I taste the alcohol in a mixed drink so this drink was definitely up my alley. It was super refreshing and had a nice bubblyness to it. Lemongrass steak nachos: the lemongrass was definitely a standout taste in these nachos which I loved! I loved the combo of the fresh ingredients like the cilantro, lemongrass, and cabbage with the steak and queso, it helped to balance all the flavors and didn't feel heavy Frites: pretty standard tasting fries, not too skinny and not too thick which I liked! The chili mayo had a nice smoky sweet flavor and it was a great dipping sauce! Kimchi Arancini: these were crispy and had a nice gooey cheese in the middle which definitely had a cheese pull. The kimchi taste I felt was relatively mild which is great for people that don't want such a strong sour kimchi flavor, I love kimchi so I could've definitely had it stronger. They do give you a side of kimchi to go with it, but I didn't love the kimchi it came with. I'm used to getting kimchi from Hmart or other Asian grocery stores but this was pretty mid to me. We were seated with a view of the ferris wheel and the the Puget Sound, within walking distance from our conference venue. The service was friendly and attentive. Our server made sure that our water glasses were never empty and he cracked jokes throughout the night! The only feedback I would give is I wish the server would not upsell the wine so much - he brought it up multiple times throughout the night even though my group was very clearly not the drinking type. It was Seattle Restaurant Week when we visited but we were enticed to try their main dishes: the seared scallops, the duck leg confit, and rack of lamb. For dessert, we collectively got to try the creme brulee, the chocolate cheesecake, and the ice cream. I had the Coquilles St. Jacques, the seared scallops, as my entree. The scallops were just the right amount of seared and while there were only four scallops, there were plenty of green beans and mushrooms to fill me up. The puree was flavorful and I couldn't get enough of it! For desert, I ordered the Gateau Basque au Fromage, the chocolate cheesecake. The portions were generous and the cheesecake was decadent without being overly sweet. The restaurant itself may be hard to find since it's tucked away in the coner but if you follow the red neon sign, you will find it if you just follow the narrow long hallway! It's a little more on the expensive side, but worth it for the thoughtfully created dishes. This is a great spot to impress someone who is visiting the area (like me)!
