Last night I went to the Freehouse with some friends for the Dancing With the Stars watch party! From the second we walked in until the moment we left was a 5 star experience. The vibe of the restaurant was modern yet rustic very clean, warm and relaxing. The service was amazing, everyone was so welcoming, and genuinely looked like they were having fun. I love LOVE this place. I love to come here for breakfast, happy hour, dinner, and even late night drink drinks with my friends. If I feel like takeout of a wholesome entrée or meal, I always order to go from here. This is my favorite place for breakfast. I love to get their farmers all American breakfast and I like to either get bacon or sausage with it. Their French toast is to die for. This was the first restaurant that I've ever had an espresso martini at, and they make really good espresso martinis. The service here is also always spectacular. The service is always always exceptional and super friendly. You almost feel like you're in a tourist state or something because this is not very usual for Minneapolis to have really good service like you're on vacation type of service... very very super sweet professionals that really really do enjoy working here and they appear to love their job. Whenever I order to go and I arrive a little early they always are attentive and they check up on you and your order like you never have to ask if it's ready or not like they just know and they're gonna always check on you so you don't really have to worry about waiting long. They do not have a parking lot. It is all street parking so it's best to either come really early for the happy hour and then stay for the dinner. Otherwise it's very hard to find parking in this area. I absolutely love love their carrot cake, and they serve it with ice cream. It is one of the best carrot cakes I've ever had and I have been getting their carrot cakes for over a decade now. I feel like this is the only place in the area that you can get hashbrowns at all hours of the day because I love getting hashbrowns if I see it on the menu, I will asked for hashbrowns instead of fries even when I get a burger. I think the only other place that does hashbrowns all day long is JD Hoyts but they're really only open for dinner or as the free house is open for breakfast lunch happy hour dinner and late night. I've been to Freehouse a few times for different occasions, mostly after work for a quick bite and a beer. I like their tap list, but I do wish they had Guinness or a few other classic beers on tap. Since they're in such a busy area, it seems like a place that often gets picked spontaneously by people who may not realize it's primarily a brewery. As for the food, I haven't been especially impressed based on the appetizers I've tried. Everything has felt a bit safe and under-seasoned, and I've struggled to find something that really stands out in terms of flavor. It's not bad by any means, just a little forgettable. The atmosphere and beer selection are the highlights for me, but I'd love to see a menu with a little more personality and bolder flavors. read more

I LOVE this North Loop restaurant. I am constantly dreaming of their Steak & Pierogi dish. It's a combo I am unfamiliar with but is the perfect serving size and SO flavorful. You MUST get the cheese curds here. I typically don't order cheese curds at restaurants but these you can not pass on. The apple and roasted red pepper sambal dipping sauces are amazing. If you are looking for a patio vibe, I love this one! It's fairly busy in the summer season but has nice seating, fires, and string lights! read more

Returned here one year after my last review. This time, I'm scoring it: Food: 4 stars, loved the French Toast and the Farmer's Breakfast, though both were not very hot but were a bit bland. Service: 2 stars, as we were forced to sit outside (chilly but near a nice fire). Our server just couldn't keep up, though they were responsive when asked. The main thing is our food wasn't terribly hot upon arrival, but maybe sitting in the cool afternoon didn't help. Ambience: 1 star, primarily due to the 1970s Soft Rock Tribute Band playing at a thunderous volume near the bar. The din forced us outdoors into the cold. Perhaps others just loved the music; it simply wasn't to our taste. Lots of Nixon-era Hall & Oates and that ilk. The Freehouse is typically better than this, so perhaps Mother's Day isn't them at their best. We'll try them again down the road. read more

Great food and drinks at The Freehouse! The truffle burger was delicious, I truly enjoyed every bite! The lemongrass Thai chicken was also very good, especially when adding the cauliflower rice. The Mac and cheese was downright tasty, extremely cheesy! And we definitely would get the calamari appetizer again, great dipping sauces with that dish! This was a great lunch spot for me! The space was nice and open with good seating, and my server was very helpful and kept my soda filled. I started with the deviled egg appetizer, and they were delicious. My main course was the angel hair pomodoro with shrimp, and it was delicious, with the exception of me having to add a little extra salt and pepper. My biggest complaint here was the abysmal parking, which I know was not the restaurants fault but I wanted to warn anyone for the future. On a Thursday at about 11:30, it took me at least 20 minutes of circling about 10 blocks trying to find any open parking until finally I found some about 4 blocks away. read more

When it's nice out, we adventure!! Came here after a Yelp event and was very happy with our choice. They have a wonderfully smooth brown ale on tap and it hits big time!! Food: we decided on the Brussels sprouts and they did not disappoint... cooked perfectly and the goat cheese and honey complimented everything perfectly. Freehouse has been a popular spot for many years. I had always heard mixed reviews but finally decided to give it a go. Made a reservation since I know they get busy. It took a while for someone to greet us, but we were finally seated. They had happy hour going on still so we ordered the chicken wings and a loaded mashed potatoes. This is where it went downhill.... The mashed potatoes tasted..... extra salty and sour? They had a cranberry sauce on them, which was odd. The chicken was covered in feathers and the piece that wasn't, when we bit into it, it was COMPLETELY frozen in the center. We returned the wings and did not order a new batch. For the entree we ordered the pesto chicken pasta and the chicken noodle soup. Those were essentially okay, but sooooooo salty. I don't quite understand the hype and will not go back. read more

Breakfast Review: We only tried a couple of items, but overall came away impressed.My cheesy hash-brown loving wife ordered the American breakfast, which delivered exactly what she was hoping for. In fact, the scrambled eggs were practically hidden beneath a glorious dome of crispy hash browns.I went with the Eggs Benedict, and it was very tasty. Presentation-wise, it looked surprisingly light and summery, garnished with what I think was kale and a sprig of dill perched on top. Don't be fooled by appearances though. This was a rich, hearty dish. I'm a big guy and I couldn't finish it.Flavor-wise, the salmon, generous helping of capers, and dill made for a bold combination. While I enjoyed it, I found those flavors a bit overpowering for an Eggs Benedict. For me, this is already a naturally rich dish, and I look for a little lemony brightness in the hollandaise to balance everything out. Instead, this version leaned fully into the rich and savory side of the spectrum.A small note: if they aren't doing it already, rinsing the capers can help tame some of their intensity and keep them from dominating the dish.Even with that critique, the meal was satisfying, filling, and clearly made with care. Visited 12/27/25. After visiting, my sister and I agreed that we love Freehouse most for drinks, apps (like a happy hour kind of vibe), and brunch. On this occasion, we lucked out with street parking, but there's also ramp parking nearby. Our waitress was super accommodating to our group of 6 and consistently checked in throughout. Freehouse has such a fun vibe and I love the sheer amount of drink options they have. There's truly something for everyone. I got a cider while others in my group got beers and one person got a wine. I like that they include a combination of Freehouse beers + other rotating taps. For dinner, I got the rotisserie chicken sandwich, my sister got the cauliflower za'tar, and others in our party got the chimichurri short rib, the prime rib, and the steak and pierogies. We all ate our full plates and I'll give the best shout out to the house made chips. These were delicious and I would order them by themselves! With the sandwich for some reason the balance felt a little off and this happens with rotisserie chicken, but I got a few pieces of bone or something sharper while I was chewing which can be off-putting. Loved the jus that accompanied, but for some reason the sandwich wasn't as creamy or as flavorful as I thought it would be. The baguette is the best part. Would benefit from something a little sharper like a horseradish or mustard or something pickled to liven it up a bit. My sister felt similarly about her cauliflower dish. Overall, the Freehouse is still such a fun spot in a fun location. The apps themselves are wonderful and I regret not getting these. They consistently put out some quality beer that doesn't just stick to standard styles, have some decent happy hour specials and the food is generally good comfort food. Anything fried will hit the spot, there's a reason the turkey burger is on the menu at all BP spots and there's not many other places nearby that'll offer brinner on the evening menu. The North Loop isn't hurting for options, but the Freehouse is a good one if you need a menu with broad appeal or if you're in the mood for a casual happy hour. read more

It was perf toy crispy with a fantastic homemade dressing that was packing flavor. I had a few options for the server but told them to surprise me. My dish come out and it was the thai pork dish. I've been here a few times but had been a while. My date wanted to be on a patio and so I chose Freehouse. It was kind of busy but we walked in and got seated quickly. From there on out, nothing else went very well. Ordered some dry rub wings, oysters, buffalo cauliflower and a couple drinks. Both took a while to come out and the drinks didn't actually come out till after the food came out which is definitely a pet peeve of mine. The dry rub wings were grilled and I had no clue, so thats partly my fault, but I feel like grilled is usually listed on the menu. Oysters were fine but my date usually has them with Tabasco and they had none which was kind of odd. And then they forgot all about the cauliflower, we waited til he checked in on us to ask about it but by that time we were done with our food and didnt even want it anymore. Drinks were fine. Went here with a group of friends. We went on a Monday evening and had reservations. We were able to pick inside or patio upon arriving. We ended up picking the patio because it was nice out but towards the end of us dining it started to rain, gotta love Mn weather. We started with drinks and a few apps. I got the slushy - which was a blue raspberry one - not sure what liquor it had in it but it was really good. For apps we got the buffalo cauliflower and cheesecurds. Both apps were really good so I was hopeful for the entrees. I got "the Rachel" turkey sandwich with fries. It was good but I probably wouldn't order it again the bottom of the bread got really mushy won't the pickles and other toppings making it a bit messy to eat. Someone else ordered a blt and asked for the bacon to be cooked crispy, basically burnt and when it came out some of the pieces looked like they were barely cooked. I've been here a time before and kind of recall liking some of the things we tried. I would definitely come back again to try other items and the drinks were good. It's a cute restaurant. Cute atmosphere, the music is good and.l not too loud. I also really liked the menu; there were many options and most sounded yummy! I ordered the seafood rigatoni diablo, which was just ok. The seafood was good, and it had some heat, but I was expecting it to be creamier.. it was basically just crushed tomatoes, pasta and seafood. The drinks were good; I got one and asked to remove the bitters and they were happy to do so. One thing I want to highlight is they have you pay on a card machine without showing you the bill. My buddy and I were in Minneapolis to see Frank Caliendo at ACME and it is only about a five minute walk to Freehouse. I sat and the atmosphere is upscale casual and I ordered an Imperial IPA. This is a pretty solid north loop spot that is a great weekend stop if you don't have reservations. many North Loop restaurants will need some kind of reservation on weekends because they get so busy, but we were able to get in Saturday night at 7:30 with no wait at all. Their menu is quite extensive and they have things ranging from burgers to salads to pasta dishes. Drink menu is original and has some fun cocktails. The wings with the Asian buffalo sauce are my absolute favorite. The flavor is always so tasty and the wings are a good size. We also tried the burger, which was supposed to have some red in the middle and instead was thoroughly cooked. Service was friendly. It is more of an upscale, casual vibe, although you could definitely go quite casual as well. read more

I always love going to the Freehouse. I will say it's annoying how they have gotten rid of their parking lot over the years, so we have to tack on $10 to park now as we drive in from the burbs. The restaurant is cozy and fun. We had a reservation this time and were seated pretty quickly. There was a lot of staff, but our service was a bit discombobulated. Our waitress took our orders and then my boyfriend's drink was dropped off and mine was forgotten. About 5min later a food runner dropped off our appetizer, but quickly ran away and we had no silverware or plates and I was still missing my drink. When our waitress finally came around and we got our silverware and plates, our app was cold. Our dinners were good, but my boyfriend was disappointed at how small his portion was. He got the breakfast bowl and was still hungry. I enjoyed the fish fry, but wish there would have been more vegetables included to offset the grease. I literally got one bite of coleslaw, the smallest portion I've ever seen. I've definitely had better times at Freehouse. Not sure I'll be excited to go back anytime soon. read more

The Freehouse is a pretty solid stop in North Loop. The atmosphere is cool and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They have plenty of drink options all for prices you'd expect in the area. Recently I tried the Prom Night in Asgard cocktail and ilwnjoyed that. It was kind of like a fruity slightly creamy punch with a Norse twist. Service can be a bit slow, we wanted to get an appetizer with our drinks but the bartender never came back to ask. Once he did stop by again we were ready to head on out so that was a bummer. read more

For breakfast, my go-to is the George Washington (highly recommend), and for lunch or dinner, I love the Rachel Sandwich -- both are solid choices. On this specific visit, we stopped in just for dessert and drinks -- and wow, what a great decision! We ordered the Carrot Cake (based on a strong recommendation) and a Espresso Martini. BOTH were absolutely delicious! The carrot cake might just be one of my favorite carrot cakes ever -- super flavorful, moist, and rich. The cream cheese frosting was a little heavy for my personal taste, but the overall flavor was so good that it easily made up for it. My taste buds were seriously happy! The Espresso Martini was just as tasty -- a perfect pairing with the dessert if you're looking for a little pick-me-up with your sweet treat. I've been to The Freehouse a few times and have always had a good experience. On my latest trip the service was a little slow (took 15 minutes for the waitress to first visit our table). The food was very good. My issue is this: the ceiling is filthy. Covered in dust. With the light just right, you can see the dust falling from the ceiling onto tables. You can see it piled on unused tables. Not even sure how it's passed inspection. Gross. read more
