We came here for my birthday. As a bday gift, they offer you and your guest a small glass of bubbly. Very nice. We had a reservation but showed up an hour early as we finished our prev appt early and we were immediately seated. It was 5:30 on a Monday so not super busy. Service was excellent. Our server helped us through the French menu. He recommended the aligot which was delicious. So glad we tried it. For my entree, I chose the fish of the day which was Halibut. It was served on tomatoes and au gratin potatoes and it was excellent. Husband had the short ribs which was also delicious. There was plenty of food so glad we didn't get a side. For dessert we had crème brûlée. It was brought to the table with a big branding iron to create the crisp crust at your table. Unique feature. Loved the decor. The three of us were so looking forward to this classic French restaurant in downtown Minneapolis. Unfortunately, our experience was not the best to say the least. We arrived on time for our reservation Saturday night. We were seated in an area behind the bar with our table right next to the kitchen door, so not the best table. There really wasn't much of any French atmosphere to it. That was a bit surprising. We sat for sometime before our waitress came over with water to introduce herself. We ordered some drinks and then didn't see her again for at least 10-15 minutes. She came by and noticed that we didn't have our drinks and apologized and said she would take care of it. We didn't complain, but it was nice of her to get them immediately and then she did not charge us for the two drinks. That was much appreciated, but we also assumed because of the early hiccup that our service would be great from that point forward. Not the case. We began with the Wagyu tartare and the cauliflower, Gruyère and Chèvre soufflé. Both were excellent and we highly recommend them. Table sourdough bread was also provided, which was very good and needed because there were not many pieces of toast for the Wagyu tartare. They also mistimed our entrées as my daughter and I were served first and my wife had to wait several minutes before her entrée came. My wife had the halibut. The fish was exceptional and she really enjoyed it. However, the potatoes it sat on were cold. We asked a passing waitress if that was correct because we had not seen our waitress in sometime. She said that's the way they are supposed to be as they also have cucumber. When our waitress finally came back, she said the exact opposite, and that it should not have been cold potatoes with cucumber. She offered to do something but at that point it was too late and no one wanted to wait any longer for the kitchen. My daughter had the Coq Au Vin which she really enjoyed. I had the duck confit with bone marrow and sourdough toast with a light jam covering. The duck was heavily sauced. I was not a big fan of this heavy sauce. The bone marrow was a huge portion and tasted quite amazing when combined with the toast. We watched the table next to us, be seated 20 minutes after us, order, receive their dinner courses, and receive their check while we sat waiting for ours. Once we received our check, the other table had managed to provide their card pay and leave. When the waitress finally came back and took my credit card, she took it to process and laid it on the table; immediately leaving. We had to yell her down because she had forgotten to give us our card back. She had apparently left it in the kitchen on the machine. No apologies provided just a laugh about it being on the machine. I think she knew at this point without us having said anything negative throughout the evening that it was not going to be a great tip night for her. And then to top off the night valet parking for the restaurant is $17 plus optional tip. How ridiculous. I guess since there's not much street parking, they figure they can gouge you with the valet. If they're going to demand this kind of money, it would be nice if the valet would open the doors for the ladies instead of just the driver. read more

Maison Margaux treated us so well on our first wedding anniversary! We made brunch reservations and surprisingly, we were the only people in the restaurant for the whole morning! Everything was so lovely; the french art deco vibes were so fun and being able to see the inner workings of the kitchen from our table was so cool. The staff were extremely generous and treated us to some complimentary oysters and champagne to celebrate our anniversary. The oysters were so decadent and carefully crafted! We ordered some pastries to go along with our lattes and they were absolutely to die for. The pistachio chocolate croissant was our favorite of the bunch. We also ordered the omelette au fromage and the merguez omelette. The eggs were cooked lightly and to perfection and the fillings of both were rich and perfectly balanced. Another perk was the bread service; this was some of the best sourdough bread we've ever had and it was served with whipped butter and raspberry jam. I came here for a work event and we ate on the first floor. We did the bread service which I highly recommend because it's unlimited bread and butter as they said the starter is 130 years old. It is probably the best bread I've had in my life. The BROCCOLINI, BUTTER, WHITE WINE, GRUYERE was sooooo good! I could eat bowls of that. Beautiful interior and atmosphere. Service was quick and seamless. The server was knowledgeable on the menu and provided excellent recommendations for our dinner and desserts. Our server Luke recommended the Moules Bourguignon as a good option to share with the table. For dessert, we learned that the Chocolate Soufflé and the Crème Brûlée were some of the more popular desserts. Sure enough, those dishes ended up being our group's favorites of the night. Wish the Lobster Pie was more flavorful and had more lobster inside but we enjoyed the flakiness of the crust and it had a bit of a spice kick to it, just the right amount. read more

We had an absolutely fabulous meal at Maison the other night. Thank goodness I'm not lactose intolerant because we had two cheesy appetizers that were to die for! We started with some delicious fries, a cheese soufflé and this fancy sounding cheese fondue type pot where it created this long string to be added to yummy toasts or the French fries. Next we had the short rib and steak frites entrees. The short rib fell apart with just a fork and was complimented with the smoothest potato puree I've ever had. My husband and I had an incredible experience celebrating our anniversary here, from the moment we walked in to the moment we left. As soon as we entered, we were greeted with friendly, warm smiles by the hostesses at the host stand. They were professionally dressed, welcoming, and seated us right away. When they asked what brought us in and we mentioned our anniversary, they immediately made us feel special. Shortly after being seated, we were surprised with a signed anniversary card from the staff, such a thoughtful and personal touch that truly set the tone for the evening. The ambiance of this restaurant is so nice! We had made reservations for downstairs, which was moody, romantic and the perfect atmosphere to have a date night/anniversary dinner! Our waitress, Katie, was absolutely wonderful, kind, attentive, and very knowledgeable. I'm currently pregnant and unable to have alcohol, so I really appreciated that there were several mocktail options available. Katie recommended the Fizzy & Lifting mocktail. While I enjoyed it, it was very tart and lime forward. When I mentioned it was a bit too sour for my taste, Katie graciously brought me a Sprite to mix in, which I truly appreciated. Her service was attentive and genuinely caring. For appetizers, we ordered the scallops and the aligot. Both were outstanding! The scallops arrived with a beautiful presentation under a large shell and were perfectly seasoned, glazed with butter and lime. Honestly, they were the best scallops I've ever had. The aligot was served by Tyson, who brought great energy and friendliness to the table. He explained how to enjoy it spread over the baguette, and it was absolutely delicious, comforting, rich, and memorable. For our main courses, my husband ordered the Poulet Pommes Frites à la Moutarde. The chicken was cooked perfectly, and the mustard sauce was incredibly flavorful. I ordered the steak frites, which were also excellent and nicely seasoned steak, crispy fries, and a sauce that was full of depth and flavor. For dessert, we shared the banana caramel profiteroles, which we loved. The pastry puffs filled with frozen banana ice cream and drizzled with caramel glaze were the perfect ending to the meal. To top off an already phenomenal experience, my husband ordered a cappuccino to go. Katie wasn't initially sure if to-go cups were available, but instead of saying no, she went above and beyond to find one for us. That level of effort and care truly stood out. The only small disappointment was not receiving a small anniversary dessert or plate with "Happy Anniversary," as some restaurants do. However, this did not take away from the exceptional service and overall experience. We will absolutely be returning and recommending this restaurant to friends and family. We were celebrating my daughter's 18th bday this past Sunday and wanted to take her somewhere special. She loves French food. The bad: they were out of half of their appetizers and half of their entrees. They said they had a large party the day before. If I would have known this I would have gone somewhere else. Their menu is very limited so being out of that many items doesn't leave a ton of options. Since the items we wanted were those they were out of (most popular) it was very disappointing. My husband also ordered a beer and they were out of it. My daughter ordered a mocktail also out of it. I order the short rib and my one carrot (literally one carrot, see pic) was raw I told my waiter. The good- bouillabaisse was amazing, duck confit was cooked perfectly, tartare was good, their ice cream is outstanding. The server really tried to make up for all the food issues. Came here on Saturday around 430pm or so for some drinks to start the evening downtown! Perfect starting location. Such a nicely situated bar, well staffed with everything you could possibly imagine. I felt like I was in Paris sitting in this bar. A nice dining space too with lil bistro seating throughout. Our bartender was helpful and quick with our drinks, zero issues. He was warm, knowledgeable and saw himself as a professional, helping people have a wonderful experience at Maison Margaux. The problem with Maison Margaux is that the menu can disappoint. My vichyssoise was more of a potato purée accompanied by a pile of croutons, with none of the taste or consistency of a classic vichyssoise. However, my steak au poivre was delicious, the frites done perfectly. The Bouillabaisse was also very tasty, its rich broth complimenting the seafood. Maison Margaux lacks consistency, and that's why I can only award four stars. However, I will return, because I enjoy a modicum of sophistication in a world that shoves casual down my throat. read more

The vegetables needed much more salt, especially because they are big pieces with little surface area. The burger was delicious, but the fries weren't crispy shortly after being served. The salad felt bare; there wasn't nearly enough dressing. Maybe 20% of the greens/vegetables had dressing. Overall, I wasn't that impressed. The vibe is modern and trendy... but it was also weird... when you come out of the bathroom there's a picture of a naked women's butt. It's a massive picture. We ordered the Short Ribs and the Steak Au Poivre. The Short Ribs lacked flavor. The root vegetables were prepared al dente, which our server did describe it as such. I thought that I would try it but undercooked root vegetables are not enjoyable. The steak was prepared perfectly on a beautiful helping of pomes frites. The fries were the most flavorful item on the table. Honestly, everything needed more seasoning. I could tell that the table behind us felt the same because they asked for a salt shaker. Wish I would have asked as well. The food wasn't bad by any means. Beautifully plated and looked delicious. Unfortunately, it didn't taste as good as it looked. Would not recommend! Service: We were seated and waited five minutes before anyone came to our table to introduce themselves or offer water and menus. The server was just nice enough, but not overly friendly or helpful. Food: The French onion soup was all onions and with very little broth and was overly sweet, as if the chef had added sugar to it. This was the consensus of everyone at the table, not just one person's opinion. The cheese and crouton on top were its only redeeming qualities. The chicken with mustard was nothing special and was overly salted. The waygu steak was tough and had an odd seasoning added and was unaccompanied by any steak knives until we could flag down our server to ask. The pommes frites were long and limp, not crispy as they are supposed to be. The server also failed to bring small forks or other tools to pull the escargots from their shells and did not return to ask if we needed anything so we used our butter knives to pull them out. Drinks: The bar was also OFF! One person at our table ordered Jameson Irish whiskey and they were out, so they brought Old Granddad, which is not a proper substitute. I ordered an Empress gin martini and it was clear, rather than the purple hue it would have had if they had used the gin that was ordered. VERY DISAPPOINTING experience. read more

We celebrated our anniversary here and to say it was an amazing experience would be an understatement. This place absolutely delivers on every level. First off, the interior is STUNNING--elegant, cozy, and chic. It's also in a prime location, with plenty of bars and dessert spots nearby to continue your evening. From the moment we walked in, the hostesses were so friendly and welcoming, immediately setting the tone for an amazing experience. Because it was our anniversary, they treated us to complimentary champagne, a thoughtful touch that started our meal on a high note. The bread service was incredible--warm, plentiful, and quickly replenished. They don't hold back on the bread, and we loved every bite. For appetizers, the frog legs were outstanding--crispy and perfectly cooked, but the real standout for us was the tomato and onion pipérade. It was incredibly warm and flavorful. As for mains, the short ribs were solid: tender and fall-apart good, though I wished for just a bit more flavor and more vegetables to balance the dish. I'd suggest exploring other menu options when you visit, especially because everything sounded incredible. To complement our amazing food, we also had wonderful drinks. My old fashioned was perfectly crafted, and we were treated to samples of Natterjack whiskey since they were getting diners' feedback on if they should bring it in-house, which they absolutely should! Went for brunch with some girl friends, and sadly was really disappointed. I wanted to like it so much because it's a super cute and trendy restaurant and great location in the North Loop - but it just seemed to miss the mark on all other aspects. We were the first group there, and they sat the second set of patrons RIGHT next to us when it wasn't until probably 30-45 minutes later another group even came in. Pretty sure it wouldn't have been a problem if they had put one table space between us... Service was not great, although our server was very friendly. He was training in and seemed new to serving in general - what seemed odd was the person training him in never appeared so I'm not sure wha training was happening. Food was mediocre at best - maybe my expectations were just too high but I had heard such great things about this place. I'm going to chalk it up to brunch still being new and would still give this place a try for dinner! read more

Ordered an old fashioned to start (my go to) and then proceeded to have wine with dinner. At the end of our meal, we received complimentary whiskey tastings as a gift for our anniversary-- which was super nice of the staff. For dinner we got a few apps to split: tomato and onion piperade on sourdough, chicken, and pommes aligot. All of it was delicious. They put is in a small booth, which seemed fine until we realized with ordering drinks and appetizers, the table was entirely too small. We moved ourselves after inquiring with our server who was a good sport. Food was mediocre, and the portions are quite small. We didn't get direction on ordering and wish we had been offered additional options for three, as it was clear we were all eating. Beef tartare came with only two crostini's and it lacked seasoning. French fries with the bernaise and remoulade was large and delicious. Broccolini with butter, white wine and Gruyère was stellar. The cauliflower Gruyère and chèvre soufflé was ok, again lacked seasoning. The aligot was cheesy and very good; bread basket was one of the best parts to eat with the aligot because you only get two piece of charred bread with it. I visited twice, first for a 12 people birthday dinner and a 3 person happy hour. Both times, everything was impeccable except the experience with the general manager that left a sour taste in my group's mouth. I felt very uncomfortable and disrespected as a customer. During my first experience, one of my party's food did not arrive. We noticed the table behind us (who arrived after us) received her same dish. Instead of an apology, the GM made our friend look like it was her mistake, and our friend was left to wait another 10 mins for her main dish to be made. It was a birthday gathering, so we did not make a scene. Second time I was at the happy hour, the same GM slammed the check down and we felt chastised and dismissed to leave. I felt so disrespected, and so disconnected with the experience. It was genuinely beautiful place and a lovely ambiance. Overall, the Maison Margaux staff was attentive but the general manager's treatment of customers needs a close looking at. It is a shame that 2 strikes happened because of the same GM. We had dinner reservations here the night before our big meeting to get us ready for the big day. We all partook in some cocktails because restaurants like this one ha the best cocktail menu. I ordered a gin based cocktail that sounded delicious and it was just that, delicious. We ordered the mussels and the cheese flan as our appetizers and were eager to get our main dishes. The table ordered steak, seafood stew, the pork and the fish for dinner. My seafood stew was absolutely amazing. The flavor was perfect and the cook was stunning.
