I needed a few things done: cut down a huge, sprawling dead tree and aesthetic pruning of 4 smaller trees. Mark's team brought the dead tree down safely and efficiently. Two smaller trees were pruned well. But one pair of trees, while ugly to start with, looked worse after pruning. This was very disappointing as I don't think Mark's pruner took much time to think about how to make them look good. I would be cautious if you need aesthetic pruning, but I would hire Mark again for large tree work. You can repurpose your wood chips for mulching without extra cost. He was friendly, efficient, accommodating and had the fairest bid for the work. read more

After getting bids from five different companies we hired Forestree to trim 5 trees and take out two. Mark and his crew were fantastic. First, his bid was the best. Probably more importantly he actually knows trees and did not try and convince us to do all kinds of things we did not need to do. Another guy tried to convince me on the spot to use chemical spray to address what he said was as pest problem. I asked Mark and he told me that it was not, in fact, a pest problem and there was a non toxic way to address the issue if we wanted to. He and his crew were fantastic. I called for an estimate and Mark came out and spent about 10 minutes with my tree and assured me that the oak was going to be fine and addressed the current drought situation and the importance of mulching. Mark and his team removed a dying old laurel tree and pruned several other trees on our property. When he first came out to assess the situation, he answered all our questions thoroughly and gave us very definitive advice that revealed his breadth of experience and knowledge as an arborist. His price quote came quickly and was reasonable. He and his team arrived right on time to do the work. They did an amazing job at pruning our trees, including transforming the city-owned tree at the sidewalk in front of our building. Forestree did a beautiful job of trimming our trees. We had a city tree that was in bad need of pruning in the front. They did a great job. Shaping it and doing it in a very thoughtful way. This was proved out by the fact that although they significantly trimmed the tree, people didn't even notice that it had been pruned! But compliments especially for the job they did on our willow tree. It is an old large tree in our back yard that we love. They did a fantastic job. Tree looks beautiful. Over the years we have had various tree trimmers and arborists work on our trees, but when my partner saw what they had done with the willow tree said: I think this is the best job yet! Mark was great to work with. Scheduling was a little delayed because of COVID 19 and things slowly reopening. But Mark was very responsive in his communications with me, and even called the day before to remind me that they would be starting in the morning. It is the first time I have used Forestree but the overall experience was excellent. When Mark came to give me a bid, I wanted to make sure that an arborist would be there on site when the work was being done. He confirmed absolutely, that he would be there for the job. Mark Dils gave me an estimate in the spring for pruning a redwood tree and 4 pistache trees. He and his crew did an acceptable job on the redwood but when i called him back to do the pistache trees, I had a hard time reaching him. He finally called and made an appointment for October 23. That morning he called to say the job was too small and not worth the time of his crew but that he would be willing to come out himself on a Saturday. I agreed and the appt was reset for Sat Nov 4. Today he called to once again cancel and suggest that I hire someone else. He may have been good in the past, but he has a real attitude problem. I would never recommend him. read more

We are dismayed by the unprofessionalism displayed by this arborist. Having been customers of the Forestree Company for 6 years, we asked them to help us survey and provide an estimate for a redwood tree topping project that we are undergoing with one of our downhill neighbors in the Oakland Hills. The neighbors/tree owners have agreed to getting their 4 trees topped at our expense. The trees were planted after the fire and are beginning to encroach on our view of the bay. However, the tree owners have asked that we provide them with addresses of other tree topping projects that the Forestree Company has conducted in the area so that they can see what the "final product" after the topping will look like - a reasonable request. When Mark Dills first surveyed our project, he told us that it would not be a problem, that his company has done redwood tree toppings many times before and that he would get back to us with some addresses. Two weeks passed - no word from Mark. We called him about it again. He returned our voicemail a week later stating that he would have to talk to Marshall Lyons about getting us addresses. Now it sounded like a stall tactic and Mark sounded hesitant about taking on the project - a 360 degree turn. Mark promised my husband on the phone that he would get back to us "tomorrow" after talking to Marshall. That was 3 weeks ago! We left another voicemail. No response. It is utterly embarrassing to have to tell our neighbors, the tree owners, that our arborist will not return our phone calls about the addresses that they have asked for. Apparently, the Forestree Company has no interest in keeping its long-term customers. We will never use them again and question their professionalism. read more

Marshall Lyons, arborist of the Forestree Company, and his excellent and highly skilled crew, have done extensive trimming of several large trees in our garden. Marshall listens carefully and thoroughly reviews the project before starting, gives great suggestions, and remains on-site with the crew for the entire process. I can't say enough about how courteous and skilled the crew is - watching them at work is simply amazing, especially on our huge fir tree that needed extensive trimming next to our house. The men at the top of the tree lower the heavy cut branches so gracefully on ropes that nothing gets crushed below the tree, Marshall and the crew step back and examine the tree as every branch is cut to see what needs to be worked on next, and make sure that the tree itself stays well-shaped and natural-looking. They also clean up all of the leaves, branches and twigs meticulously when they're done, and they even swept my paths. Their prices are very reasonable, their customer service is excellent, they work quickly and efficiently, and they will even leave you a wonderful pile of mulch from their chipper, after trimming the tree, if asked. One of the worst companies I have worked with in the Bay Area for the past 10 years we have lived here. We hired them to trim some trees in the backyard. They did a poor job: shaved off the top, did not round out the trees, and did not thin out the foliage (despite our agreement). When I called to register my concern with the job, in the midst of the call while I was talking VERY politely, Mark, the main guy at the company, screamed at me, told me he never wanted to work for me, and hung up!! I called him back and told him this was no way to behave and retain clients. He made no attempt to hear me out or my concerns and did not apologize. My husband and I have worked with multiple contractors in the Bay Area and home professionals, and have NEVER been treated this way. They did a poor job, and were unconcerned about the quality of work, and incredibly rude to boot. Do not get mistreated by this bunch! I am going back to Brende and Lamb given how professional they are, true arborists who care for their work, rather than Forestree Company interested in making a fast buck with no concern for clients or their reputation. read more

We are thrilled! We live in Piedmont and have a live oak tree that is between our house and our neighbor's house. It is too tight of a space for this very big tree, but I'm sure that the tree was here before the houses and it is a beautiful tree, so we work around it. The problem is that over the last seven years, we have tried several different well-respected tree companies to maintain the tree. The first one charged a LOT of money and then gave it a very severe and unprofessional haircut instead of shaping and pruning. It was good for keeping the size under control but terrible for the aesthetics. So the next several years we used a company that did lovely pruning but absolutely did not hear me when I repeatedly said that I needed the tree to be trimmed back so that it didn't get any bigger. After my third and last time of using that company and being dissatisfied with the fact that they didn't do anything to control the ever-increasing size of this tree (which at that point was well above our roof line and touching both houses), I called Forestree. I explained to Mark that I do not want to top the tree, I do not want to cut it too severly, but it needs to be smaller or we will end up having to take it out. I asked him to trim it down and in as far as he could without harming the tree, with the idea that we will keep at this each year to bring the size down slowly. I was very pleased with how it came out. He charged a fair price (quite a bit less than the first company that used the chain saw for the severe cut back, and only slightly more than the company that had done the nice pruning but no trimming). He came on the day that he said he would, cleaned up the yard very nicely when he was done, and did EXACTLY as I had requested. The tree looks beautiful, healthy, and nicely shaped and pruned. We are very happy customers and will definitely be using Forestree from now on! read more
